“This is a very difficult situation for us,” said Ms. Dubbelink, who speaks on behalf of Ms. Nijmeijer’s family. “We don’t know if she is alive or not. That is the big question.”
In January, Colombian military officials told Ms. Nijmeijer’s family that the FARC had mentioned in their radio communications a woman called Holanda. That was proof, they said, that Ms. Nijmeijer might still be alive. But the Defense Ministry, questioned here on her status this week, declined to comment.

Yesterday President Obama said that his daughter Malia had asked him, “Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?” So today, Beck dropped his rule of leaving the families alone and took a shot at 11 year-old Malia. Mockingly replaying the conversation between the President and his daughter, Beck attacked Malia’s intelligence:
BECK: This is such a ridiculous — this is such a ridiculous thing that his daughter– (imitating Malia) Daddy?
GRAY: It’s so stupid.
BECK: How old is his daughter? Like, thirteen?
GRAY: Well, one of thems, I think, thirteen, one’s eleven, or something.

George W. Bush: “The Marshall Plan is a crazy idea of the Democrats. All of the economic growth of the United States has been encouraged by wars.”
Oliver Stone’s new documentary South of the Border, which interviews several left-wing leaders of Latin American countries, has unearthed a startling new allegation from Argentina’s former president Néstor Kirchner. During his interview with Stone, Kirchner said he once discussed global economic problems with former President George W. Bush. The former Argentine president says that when he suggested a new Marshall Plan, referring to the WW II-era European reconstruction plan, Bush “got angry” and suggested that “the Marshall Plan is a crazy idea of the Democrats.” Instead, Kirchner says, Bush suggested that “the best way to revitalize the economy is war”:
KIRCHNER: I said that a solution for the problems right now, I told Bush, is a Marshall Plan. And he got angry. He said the Marshall Plan is a crazy idea of the Democrats. He said the best way to revitalize the economy is war. And that the United States has grown stronger with war.
STONE: War, he said that?
KIRCHNER: He said that. Those were his exact words.
STONE: Is he suggesting that South America go to war?
KIRCHNER: Well, he was talking about the United States: ‘The Democrats had been wrong. All of the economic growth of the United States has been encouraged by wars.’ He said it very clearly.
It is worth noting that despite the prosecution of two major wars, there was very minimal net job growth during Bush’s tenure as president. And of course, he bequeathed an economy that suffered massive job losses in his wake.

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has apologised for an allegedly sexist remark he made to a female interviewer during a televised public debate in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
The remark had been criticised by the editor of Dutch feminist magazine Opzij, who said she demanded an apology. The criticism of the remark is shared by Labour MP Mariëtte Hamer and Green Left leader Femke Halsema. Volgens de eerste berichten is het gat op 1.700 meter diepte in de Golf van Mexico gedicht. Volgens Thad Allen van de Coast Guard stroomt er geen olie en gas meer uit de leiding naar de oppervlakte. Het gat is gedicht met behulp van de ‘Top Kill’-methode. Daarbij wordt er onder hoge druk zware modder in het gat gepompt waarna het met beton wordt afgesloten.
UPDATE, mei 27th, 2010 at 5:06 pm: (Reuters) - BP (BP.L) is continuing with its “top kill” operation to try to plug its leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well but has no immediate update to give on whether it has succeeded, a BP spokesman said on Thursday.
Spokesman David Nicholas was responding to a Los Angeles Times report that had quoted a U.S. Coast Guard admiral leading the oil spill response as saying the top kill procedure had succeeded in blocking the leak.
“The top kill operation continues, there are no operational updates,” Nicholas told Reuters
