Die kältesten Neujahrspartys der Welt ist in den Niederlanden

Es gibt Menschen, die starten das neue Jahr am liebsten mit dem Sprung ins kalte Wasser. Ob in der Nordsee, im Tiber in Rom oder einem Eisloch am Berliner See. Zigtausende begrüßten mit einem eiskalten Bad das junge Jahr 2011.
In den Niederlanden ist das Neujahrsbaden offensichtlich schon fast ein Volkssport. Mindestens 30.000 Niederländer hatten sich allein offiziell in knapp 80 Ortenzum Eisbaden angemeldet, teilten die Organisatoren des jährlichen Events mit. Allein am Strand von Scheveningen in Den Haag wollen sich etwa 10.000 Menschen in die Nordsee stürzen.

As greenhouse continues to build in the atmosphere, 2010 is entering the history books as the hottest year on record. And a year of unprecedented extreme weather which killed tens of thousands of people and affected millions. The year is ending with yet more climate disasters, from winter tornadoes across America to floods in Australia.
Australia is being ravaged by unprecedented flooding, following tremendous rainfall for months. Floods now cover an area “the size of France and Germany combined.” Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced millions of dollars of relief funding as she described the record-breaking floods:

All the snow falling down in North America and the Northern part of Europe is really consistent with global warming. Judah Cohen explains how more heat can result in more snow:

As global temperatures have warmed and as Arctic sea ice has melted over the past two and a half decades, more moisture has become available to fall as snow over the continents. … the Eastern United States, Northern Europe and East Asia have experienced extraordinarily snowy and cold winters since the turn of this century. Most forecasts have failed to predict these colder winters, however, because the primary drivers in their models are the oceans, which have been warming even as winters have grown chillier.

Wat is hier gebeurd? Een raar verhaal. Volgens het IPPMedia in Tanzania is het Nederlandse bedrijf Bioshape Tanzania, dat biodiesel zou gaan produceren van jatropha in Tanzania, er mee opgehouden. Zonder duidelijke opgave van reden. Het personeel zou al een jaar lang niet zijn uitbetaald en heeft daarom de tractoren in beslag genomen.
Was het de droogte?
Het bedrijf zou van Cor Vaes en Wil Hermans zijn. Hoewel het Nederlandse moederbedrijf in surseance van betaling is, zegt Vaes in een ander artikel dat het bedrijf in Tanzania op het punt staat verder te gaan.
Opvallend is dat ook vakgroep Energy Science van de Universiteit Utrecht er bij betrokken is. Twee studenten doen onderzoek naar het succes van de teelt van jatropha voor biodiesel in Tanzania - ’Socio economic impacts of Jatropha production in Tanzania’.

Master Thesis - Scenario analysis will be carried out in which the future impacts will be evaluated. Land ownership and land use is particularly relevant for the socio-economic performance of Jatropha production in the Tanzanian context, but also for the environmental performance (GHG balance and biodiversity impacts). Also the use of water, if applicable, should be investigated, as this is often a crucial limiting factor in Tanzania.

Hundred jobless as Dutch firm suspends jatropha production

IPPMedia - A Dutch company, Bioshape Tanzania, which cultivates jatropha for biofuel here, has suspended production, rendering more than 100 people jobless.
