Een stukje uit de Volkskrant van Thomas van der Dunk:
Zelden werd zo mooi duidelijk wat het kernprobleem is met orthodoxe moslims, als in de discussie van imam Fawaz Jneid met stadsdeelvoorzitter Ahmed Marcouch.
Op geen enkel moment blijkt de imam bereid zelfstandig na te denken: zijn betoog is niet gebaseerd op rationaliteit, maar op autoriteit. Het staat in de koran, en dat volstaat.
Deze houding maakt niet alleen een gedachtenwisseling met orthodoxe moslims, maar ook met andere orthodoxe gelovigen in laatste instantie zinloos. ‘Dat mag niet van mijn geloof’ heet het dan - alsof mensen niet van De Natuur/Allah/JHWH/De Heere hersens hebben meegekregen om zelf te kiezen, in plaats van slaafs eigendom van ‘hun geloof’ te zijn.
Daarmee is elke religieuze orthodoxie ten diepste in strijd met democratie,
omdat zij de maatschapppelijke consequenties van geloofswaarheden op irrationele gronden voor onbespreekbaar verklaart.
Zie Israel waar orthodoxe joden het ook hun seculiere landgenoten onmogelijk willen maken met Pesach normaal brood te eten. In beginsel een futiliteit, maar hebben zij een argument? Nee, alleen het Oude Testament.
Ook bij de SGP loopt elk gesprek over de politieke gelijkwaardigheid van vrouwen stuk op de vermeende eeuwige geldigheid van bijbelpassages. Zoals een SGP-jongere het jaren terug eens argeloos verwoordde: het fijne van ons geloof is dat je dan zelf niet meer steeds hoeft na te denken. Inderdaad.
Had de Amerikaanse pers zich maar eerder zo opgesteld. Bijvoorbeeld tijdens de campagne van leugens (atoombom, massavernietigingswapens, Al Qaeda) die de aanval op Irak moest voorbereiden. Deze journaliste laat zich niet afwimpelen en krijgt uiteindelijk haar zin. President Bush beantwoort haar vraag. Een flutantwoord uiteraard, maar een antwoord desalniettemin.
Ter herinnering. De Taliban heeft onlangs het Afghaanse parlement aangevallen waarbij doden zijn gevallen.

A visually agitated Bush went into an impassioned diatribe of how important it is to stick to our guns in Afghanistan. I have to say that I agree fully with the President on this one. It’s just too bad he’s virtually forgotten about the effort there, diverting vital resources to Iraq instead.
WhiteHouse.gov: I’m pleased with the Afghan army.. I wish we had completely eliminated the radicals who kill innocent people to achieve objectives, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Uit proeven met muizen in Australie blijkt dat de cellen na verwijdering van een bepaald enzym zo veranderen dat ze de verbranding opvoeren. De muis bij wie het ACE-enzym was verwijderd, woog 20% minder dan zijn ‘collega’ die evenveel at. Het dier had ook nog eens 60% minder lichaamsvet.
De grote vraag is nu of de pillen behalve voor muizen ook voor mensen werken.
Volgens deskundigen wordt het ACE-enzym al gebruikt in pillen tegen hoge bloeddruk, maar is daar nooit als bijwerking uitgekomen dat mensen afvallen. Ook zijn de bijverschijnselen nog onduidelijk, zo meldt de BBC.

It sounds like the perfect remedy for modern life: a pill that simultaneously reduces both belly fat and blood pressure. And it may already exist.
High blood pressure is often treated with drugs called ACE inhibitors, which block angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). ACE usually constricts blood vessels and so raises blood pressure. It is also expressed in fat cells, and previous studies had suggested that it might trigger fat accumulation.
To investigate exactly what ACE does, Michael Mathai of the Howard Florey Institute in Melbourne, Australia, and colleagues engineered mice to lack the ACE gene. These mice turned out to weigh 20% less than normal mice and had 50 to 60% less body fat, especially in the abdomen. The mice also cleared excess sugar from the blood faster, making them less prone to diabetes.
This suggests that mice lacking ACE can burn off excess energy without skimping on food or being more physically active. ACE “seems to increase fat storage and the creation of new fat cells”, says Mathai, adding that ACE inhibitors might therefore help people lose weight.

Bush hits all-time low on handling of the economy.
In a NBC/WSJ poll to be released tomorrow, “only 21% approve of President Bush’s job in handling the economy - his lowest number ever as president on that question.” Additionally, the poll found that 81% of Americans “believe the US is currently in a recession.”

Is the most powerful man in Iraq an Iranian?
McClatchy reports that one of “the most powerful men in Iraq isn’t an Iraqi government official, a militia leader, a senior cleric or a top U.S. military commander or diplomat.” “Tehran’s point man in Iraq” is Brig. Gen. Qassem Suleimani, who commands the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Suleimani has “ensured the elections of pro-Iranian politicians, met frequently with senior Iraqi leaders and backed Shiite elements in the Iraqi security forces that are accused of torturing and killing minority Sunni Muslims.” He has also:
Slipped into Baghdad’s Green Zone, the heavily fortified seat of the U.S. occupation and the Iraqi government, in April 2006 to try to orchestrate the selection of a new Iraqi prime minister. Iraqi officials said that audacious visit was Suleimani’s only foray into the Green Zone; American officials said he may have been there more than once. Built powerful networks that gather intelligence on American and Iraqi military operations. Suleimani’s network includes every senior staffer in Iran’s embassy in Baghdad, beginning with the ambassador, according to Iraqi and U.S. officials. Trained and directed Shiite Muslim militias and given them cash and arms, including mortars and rockets fired at the U.S. Embassy and explosively formed penetrators, or EFP’s, the sophisticated roadside bombs that have caused hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi casualties.

She cooperates with the university of Maastricht. “It is too early to show results”, says professor Geraedts, “but I dare no longer say that there is no link.”

Als een dierentuin waar mensen tentoongesteld worden, dat zijn de dorpen in noordwest Thailand waar Kayan-vrouwen bekeken kunnen worden. Vanaf jongsafaan dragen deze vrouwen en meisjes banden om hun nek waardoor deze enorm wordt opgerekt. De dorpen, in de buurt van Mae Hong Son, zijn bevolkt met vluchtelingen uit Myanmar en zijn ingericht door Thaise toeroperators met steun van de autoriteiten. Er is een aantal van de bewoners asiel aangeboden in andere landen maar Thailand liet ze niet gaan. Ze zijn te lucratief. Vandaar dat de VN-vluchtelingenorganisatie UNHCR heeft voorgesteld om de Kayan dorpen te boycotten. Tot nu toe is daar weinig van terecht gekomen.

This girl lives in one of three villages that have been specially created by tour operators here in northwestern Thailand to house about 100 of the so-called giraffe women of Burma along with their families. Almost all the women - even the small girls, even the volleyball players - wear long, glittering coils of brass around their necks.
The women have worn their coils for generations as a mark of beauty and tribal identity. But even for them - and their husbands and brothers - life here is anything but normal. They are members of the Kayan tribe of the ethnic Karenni minority in Burma, and they are refugees from the long-running ethnic insurgencies and government repression of their homeland.

The featured guest of this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner was late-night talk-show host Craig Ferguson, and although his act was less searing than Colbert’s legendary roasting, he did manage to get some good shots in.
Seattle Times: The Scottish-born Ferguson, who became a U.S. citizen in February, asked Bush what he was going to do after leaving office, then suggested, “You could look for a job with more vacation time.” The president has drawn criticism for the amount of time he has spent away from the White House during his presidency.
Vice President Dick Cheney, Ferguson said, “is already moving out of his residence. It takes longer than you think to pack up an entire dungeon.”

Some very strange conservative activists, apparently with far too much time on their hands, launched an initiative last November to limit U.S. troops’ access to adult materials. It never occurred to me that policy makers would take this seriously, but apparently, they are.
To quickly recap for those just joining us, Congress banned sales of sexually explicit materials on military bases 11 years ago, but the Pentagon continues to allow base stores to sell magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse, which officials don’t consider explicit enough to prohibit.
The American Family Association and the Alliance Defense Fund, two religious right groups, demanded the Congress and Defense Secretary Robert Gates takes steps to scrutinize materials, including magazines and films, sold to the troops and their families.
I never thought this would go anywhere, but it looks like some Republicans, even in Congress, are actually starting to take this issue seriously.

Conservatives Increasingly Tuned Out Everything Except Fox News Between 1998-2006
A new analysis by University of Georgia associate professor Barry Hollander finds that between 1998 and 2006, Americans became increasingly polarized in their news-gathering habits. After examining five national Pew Center for the People and the Press during that time period, Hollander concluded that the public now lives in “a huge echo chamber of attitudes and ideas.”
The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Political Insider reports:
In 1998, 27 percent of Republicans and 25 percent of Democrats tuned in regularly to Atlanta-based CNN. Eight years later, the number of Democrats had risen to 29 percent.
But the number of Republicans who tuned in to CNN had shrunk to 19 percent. Gosh, where do you think they went?
Over the same period, Fox News’ share of Republican viewers jumped from 14 to 36 percent.
Hollander also notes that conservatives “dramatically dropped news sources that they perceive as being biased against their position.” Evidently, this included C-SPAN, which also saw a dramatic drop in conservative viewers.
These findings are similar to a Norman Lear Center/Zogby International poll from November 2007, which found that 22 percent of conservatives say they “never” enjoy entertainment that reflects values other than their own, as opposed to just 7 percent of liberals. Fox News was also the “most politically divisive TV channel,” with 70 percent of conservatives and just 3 percent of liberals watching it daily.
But too much Fox News may be bad news for conservatives. An April 2007 Pew Research Study survey found that viewers of the conservative Fox News channel had the lowest knowledge of national and international affairs.

It’ll all be perfectly safe - sure, maybe a bit of radiation, possibly some fallout, but heck, it won’t be as risky to your health as being a little overweight!
If that offer sounds crazy now, it sounded even crazier in 1958 when physicist Edward Teller, who had practically trademarked “Father of the H-Bomb” for his own use, went to Alaska to promote “Project Chariot,” a plan that would have used Teller’s explosive children to create a deep-water harbor on the coast of northwestern Alaska. The locals didn’t want it, and despite government pressure, a well-orchestrated media blitz that had the Alaskan newspapers in Teller’s pocket, they developed into an organized group that managed to halt the project, though not before biologist Les Viereck lost his university position because he provided data supporting the opposition.

But how much are we investing in this, Bill? We’re investing basically an hour or two of what we spend on the Pentagon for the whole year of our federal research budget right now. The total research budget of the Bush administration on sustainable energy resources has been between 2 and 3 billion dollars, which is about one day of what we spend on the Pentagon. So it’s been all war, no sustainability.And look where we are right now, right back into a corner and that’s the problem.

Hij is geboren in 1953 in Groningen en emigreerde op driejarige leeftijd naar de VS waar hij onder de schuilnaam Pete opgroeide in het plaatsje, hoe kan het ook anders, Holland. In 1992 volgde hij Guy van der Jagt op als congreslid van het 2de district van Michigan. Hij deed daarbij zijn verkiezingstoer op de fiets. Dat sloeg aan want zijn district bevat het hoogste aantal Nederlandse Amerikanen in de VS. Maar zelfs de oerconservatieve Peter Hoekstra kan president Bush niet meer volgen. Hij wil namelijk diplomatie met Iran.

Hoekstra: ‘Iran Is Not Iraq’ And Military Action Would Be A ‘Huge Mistake‘
Today on CNN’s Late Edition, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) sounded a note of caution on belligerant action toward Iran. Both said that Iran is trying to extend its influence in Iraq, warned against military action, and advocated diplomatic engagement. Hoekstra said:
I believe that reaching out and engaging with Iran, but doing so with Russia, doing so with our European allies, recognizing that they do have contacts into Iran, and engaging in a full-court diplomatic press with Iran is a good thing to begin the process of doing that.
You know, we’re not going to go into Iran militarily. The senator is absolutely right. Iran is not Iraq. And going in there militarily would be, from my perspective, a huge mistake.
A “stark new assessment” by Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen reports that “the government of Iran continues to supply weapons and other support to extremists in Iraq, despite repeated promises to the contrary, and is increasingly complicit in the death of American soldiers.” Yet Mullen too responded last week by stating, “I have no expectations that we are going to get into a conflict with Iran in the immediate future.”
In recent days, Hoekstra has sharply criticized the Bush administration’s handling of foreign policy. Commenting on the recent news that North Korea had helped Syria build a nuclear reactor - which was destroyed by Israel - Hoekstra blasted the White House for keeping the information from Congress for almost a year.

Reuters reports that militants “bombarded Baghdad’s Green Zone with rockets on Sunday, taking advantage of the cover of a blinding dust storm to launch one of the heaviest strikes in weeks on the fortified compound”:
The strikes appeared to defy a renewed call for a ceasefire by Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, which has seen many of his masked gunmen leave the streets of the Sadr City slum where they hold sway in eastern Baghdad. [..]
Iraqi police said eight missiles or mortars had hit the Green Zone and another 14 fell in other parts of the Iraqi capital before nightfall in several quick bursts, killing two people and wounding 20.
“Militiamen have fired 700 missiles and mortars over the past month in Baghdad,” Reuters adds.

Het voelde dat het welkom was en is dicht bij ons gekropen.

De naam? Wel, Inti leek ons wel mooi. Inti is Aymara (en ook Quechua) voor Zon en is voor zowel en meisje als een jongen geschikt.
Zo kort bij de hemel kon het eigenlijk geen andere naam krijgen.
Inderdaad, deze gringo wordt papa.
Is de president van de Verenigde Staten tegelijk ook de president van Israel? Republikeins presidentskandidaat John McCain blufte gisteren dat hij, als hij president van Amerika mocht worden, de grootste nachtmerrie voor Hamas zal zijn. De vraag dringt zich op of Hamas ooit de VS heeft aangevallen, ooit heeft gedreigd met een aanval of uberhaupt in staat is om de VS aan te vallen? Nee, nooit, niet. Hamas is een ‘one issue’ partij die in een territoriaal conflict is gewikkeld met Israel. Is Hamas daarom volgens McCain ook in een territoriaal conflict met de VS?
En wat betekent nachtmerrie McCain voor het democratisch gekozen Hamas? Gaat hij, in navolging van Bush met Irak, Gaza bezetten? Gaat hij ze bombarderen tot ze democratisch The American Way zijn?

I think that people should understand that I will be Hamas’s worst nightmare.
What possible reason would a U.S. President have for turning himself and our country into a “nightmare” for Hamas, let alone its “worst nightmare”? Hamas is a single-issue Palestinian group, focused exclusively on its “territorial dispute” with Israel (and, in light of its victory in the U.S.-demanded election, is also now preoccupied with governing the Palestinian Authority). Is there anyone who thinks that Hamas has tried to, will try to, or ever could attack the U.S.? Hamas is an enemy of Israel, not the U.S. Is that a distinction we even recognize any more?
What exactly is the point of feeding Israel billions of dollars every year in military aid if we’re going to deem every one of its fights to be our fight, and every one of its enemies to be our Enemy? De ultieme arrogantie van de huidige Amerikaanse regering blijkt wel uit dit verhaal. Niet alleen ontbond bestuurder Paul Bremer - een van de grootste idioten uit de Amerikaanse geschiedenis - direct na de bezetting het voltallige Iraakse leger, hij ontsloeg ook alle Baath-leden uit de ambtenarij waardoor er geen deskundigen meer waren, hij verzelfstandigde staatsbedrijven die allemaal failliet gingen en hij liet een nieuwe Iraakse vlag ontwerpen. Uiteraard was het de man ontgaan dat de kleuren van de eerste vlag gelijk waren aan die van de Israelische vlag. Het is de kortst gebruikte vlag ooit geworden.

I hope you’re ready. April 26, 2008, is the fourth anniversary of one of the great accomplishments of our “liberation” of Iraq: the unveiling of a new Iraqi national flag. At that point in time the occupation of Iraq was moving into its second year and the Iraqi Governing Council had few accomplishments to its credit. Paul Bremer, administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority, had been responsible for all the significant milestones of the first year. These included disbanding the Iraqi army, thus making those trained soldiers available for service in insurgent groups, and the ouster of Baath Party members from civil service positions, thus reducing to resentful penury all the people capable of maintaining government operations. These were key steps in reducing Iraq to ungovernable chaos and Bremer gets the lion’s share of credit.
No wonder the Iraqi Governing Council was jealous and eager to show that it could make significant contributions of its own. The IGC accordingly sponsored a design competition for a new Iraqi flag and unveiled the winning design in April 2004. Eschewing the traditionally Arabian color combination of red, black, and green (derived from the original flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916), the IGC’s proposed new flag featured a soothing combination of blue and white (and a subdued yellow accent that was supposed to represent the Kurdish minority). It was quickly criticized for using the same color scheme as the Israeli flag. This was not likely to increase the new flag’s acceptability to Iraqi citizens.
The IGC quickly offered a new image of the proposed flag; the blue regions were darker in the new image and IGC explained that the new image provided “a rectification of printing errors” in the original image. Whether this was true or merely an excuse, the shift from baby blue to dark blue did not assuage the concerns of the Iraqi populace. The bonnie blue flag slowly faded away without further comment. It vanished down the memory hole and has not been seen since.

HOW TO SPOT A PERSIAN PROSTITUTE?
Tehran’s former police chief Reza Zarei attempted suicide in prison yesterday, a month after being arrested for consorting with six naked women in a brothel. In the aftermath of the scandal, the Times, the Associated Press, and the BBC all reported that prostitutes are becoming more visible on Iranian streets. Given the Islamic dress code, how do Persian prostitutes signal their trade?
Location, location, location. In the 1970s, Bostonians looking for a proverbial good time went to the “Combat Zone” and New Yorkers flocked to 42nd Street; in contemporary Iran, the holy city of Qom is known as a place of “both pilgrimage and pleasure.” There, prostitutes wearing veils and even chadors mill about temples or sit together in public courtyards where men can inspect them. Sometimes a male go-between offers “introductions,” at which point the prostitutes pull aside their headgear so the potential client can get a glimpse, but the whole process is fairly subtle. For an outsider, it’s difficult to pick a street girl out of a crowd.

Iranian elections make Ahmadinejad ‘increasingly vulnerable’
The AP reports that according to final results today, conservatives “consolidated control of Iran’s legislature in run-off elections,” but at the same time, opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also gained strength in the Parliament. Reformists in Iran “favor greater democracy, closer ties with the West, and reducing clerical powers in Iran” and made a “respectable showing even after most of their candidates were barred from running.” The results suggest the “hard-line” Ahmadinejad “is growing increasingly vulnerable ahead of a bid for re-election next year.”
GEWOON WAT OBSERVATIES VAN ONZE MAN IN TEHERAN. -Er zijn steeds meer boot ‘incidenten’ in de Perzische Golf. Waarom?
-Op de weg tussen Isfahan en Teheran kwam ik minstens 15 verschillende agenten met laserguns tegen die iedereen snelheidsboetes gaven.
-Het was niet druk bij de tweede ronde voor de parlementsverkiezingen, die vrijdag werden gehouden.
-In Nezamabad, een volkswijk, zag ik een man met een poedel lopen.
-Het klagen over de gestegen prijzen (niet te verwarren met de wereldvoedselcrisis, maar vanwege inflatie hier) gaat onverminderd voort.
- Er gebeuren ook leuke dingen in de Perzische Golf.
-Ahmadinejad geeft iedereen de schuld van de economische crisis in het land en ontslaat zelfs zijn eigen ministers. Die vervolgens kritiek hebben.
-De rente voor spaarrekeningen is weer gestegen van 16 procent naar 24. Eerder was deze verlaagd door Ahmadinejad’s regering en lager dan de inflatie.
-In Isfahan zijn meer toeristen dan ooit. Hele schoolklassen gingen met me op de foto.
-Op fototentoonstellingen in Teheran wordt nooit een goede selectie gemaakt om geen enkele fotograaf voor het hoofd te stoten.
-De bus van Isfahan naar Teheran kost maar 3, 50 euro met koek en thee inbegrepen.
-Eskandar (onze kat) wandelt iedere dag een huis in van een oud vrouwtje die doodsbang is voor katten.
- Het is veel te warm voor de tijd van het jaar, eergisteren net buiten Teheran 42 graden.
- Toen ik naar de kapper ging was deze zijn normale schaar kwijt, waardoor hij een andere gebruikte en ik nu een soort ragebol op mijn hoofd heb.
-Ik hoor niemand meer over een boycot van Nederlandse producten.
-Het appartement van mijn schoonouders werd buiten geverfd, maar de schilders zijn er tussentijds mee opgehouden.
Het handigst is op het venster te klikken en dan iets anders te gaan doen tot de video een keer helemaal is afgespeeld. Daarna kun je de video in een keer bekijken.

Aantal; het waren er vier, de eerste twee staan niet op de video. Tijd; ongeveer kwart over tien ’s avonds. Datum; 20 april 2008 Analyse:
Eerst dacht ik dat het een soort van lichtpijlen waren, met zo’n parachute waardoor ze lang blijven zweven. Maar daarvoor gingen ze te snel. Misschien een ultralight, omdat er geen geluid was. Alleen wie gaat daar nu ’s nachts mee boven Rotterdam vliegen ? Het geluid dat je hoort komt van de weg. Die afwezigheid van geluid maakt vliegtuigen onwaarschijnlijk. Die vliegen meestal ook niet met zijn vieren, of het zouden vier straaljagers op grote afstand moeten zijn.
Het leek of er een soort van vuurtje brandde aan de achterkant van de UFO’s. Straalmotoren misschien. Voor mij was het toch iets van menselijke oorsprong.
Maar wat het nu precies waren?
