Woedende kappers gaan vandaag in België de straat op om te demonstreren tegen de oproep van Benoit Poelvoorde aan de Belgen om zich niet meer te scheren en te knippen tot er een nieuwe regering is.
“Geen regering is tot daar aan toe maar die Waalse flutacteur komt aan onze centen”, aldus een woordvoerder van de BBB - Belgische Bond van Barbiers. “Dat pikken we niet.”
De kappers zullen zich verzamelen op de Grote Markt in Brussel. Volgens uitgelekte plannen is het de bedoeling de belangrijkste trekpleister van Brussel te bedelven onder scheercremes, haarlotions en aftershaves. De politie heeft aangekondigd groot materiaal in te zetten, dat voor alle zekerheid geheel zal worden bemand door compleet kale politieagenten.

Maarten Engwirda (D66) is een dapper man. Vijftien jaar was hij lid van de Europese Rekenkamer (27 leden) en nu hij een weekje weg is, heeft hij alle zaken eens op een rijtje gezet en komt hij met dit.

“Belangenbehartiging voor het eigen land door verschillende leden van de Rekenkamer. Hun redenering was: stel je voor dat de fout bestede bedragen bekend worden. Straks moet mijn land het nog terugbetalen ook.”

Dit gaat om miljoenen onterecht uitgekeerde subsidies op het gebied van zuivel en olijfolie aan landen als Frankrijk en Italië. En dit:

“Mijn toenmalige Italiaanse collega wilde de Rekenkamer het recht ontzeggen kritiek te uiten op het Italiaanse rechtssysteem dat de misstanden had moeten voorkomen. Terwijl dat systeem aan alle kanten faalde.”

Een onthutste minister Kees de Jager van Financien reageerde vandaag dat de situatie sindsdien wel sterk is verbeterd. Dat is knap aangezien Engwirda nog geen twee weken weg is bij de Rekenkamer.

EU financial watchdog ’systemically sabotaged fraud investigations’

The EU’s financial watchdog has systemically “sabotaged” investigations and caved into intimidation from countries including France and Italy to cover up fraud, according to a senior official.
Maarten Engwirda, a former Dutch member of European Court of Auditors for 15 years, who retired 10 days ago, has alleged that abuse of EU funds was swept under the carpet by an auditing body that was supposed to expose wrongdoing.

Bij toeval zag ik dat er bij mijn bank een, ooit in 1985, afgesloten lijfrenteverzekering afloopt. Op 13 december 2010.
Bij toeval. Een mooi woord.
Behalve als het om geld incasseren gaat.
Dus loop ik mijn bank binnen en wijs een dame in een gestroomlijnd bankpak op deze feestelijke gebeurtenis.

Dame weet van niets. Uiteraard niet. Banken weten nooit van iets. Daar staan ze om bekend. Behalve als het om grove initimiderende brieven schrijven gaat, naar klanten die een beetje rood staan. Dat kunnen ze dan weer wel heel goed.
Ze doet iets met een computer en haalt mijn gegevens op: “O, ja, u heeft gelijk. Heeft u daar geen bericht van gehad?”

“Nee, ik krijg alleen berichten als ik rood sta.”
“Hmm, heeft u de polis bij u?”
“Nee. Nou ja, het zit zo. Normaal gesproken loop ik al sinds 1985 met die polis in mijn binnenzak maar vorige week was ik met mijn tandarts op de schietbaan. Dat doen wij elke maand. Lekker op de schietbaan staan en luisteren naar inslaande projectielen. Heerlijk hoe je daar van opknapt. Hoe dan ook, mijn polis is daar toen bij ingeschoten.”

Nederlanders staan wereldwijd bekend om twee zaken: water en geld. Voor JdeW klopt dat ook, met slechts een kleine variatie: geld als water.
Van water hebben Nederlanders inderdaad veel verstand. Waar ook ter wereld een probleem is met water, zie je een Nederlandse bedrijf dat het moet oplossen. Het tweede - verstand van geld - blijkt echter gebaseerd op een misverstand, aldus een onderzoek van de ING-bank. Daar hebben Nederlanders weinig kaas van gegeten.
Er zit wat in. Vooral als we vaststellen wie dit onderzoek heeft gedaan.

Following the tragic shooting of several people, including Democratic Representative Giffords many Americans ask how someone who displayed so many obvious characteristics of mental instability was able to buy so easily a semi-automatic firearm. It is illegal to sell firearms to the mentally ill. Even in Arizona. But conservatives like David Frum dismiss renewed calls for gun control.
Frum writes that the incident should “remind us why we regulate marijuana.”
Assasin Loughner (22) is suspected of being a marijuana user. Frum writes that there may be “renewed pressure to control the weapons that committed the crime,” but instead chooses to place blame on the “trend these days toward a more casual attitude and easier access to…drugs”: [read on] (more…)

The U.S. Labor Department released its employment data for December, showing that the economy ended the year by adding 113,000 private sector jobs. The unemployment rate went down sharply from 9.8 percent to 9.4 percent. The lowest rate since in 1,5 years. The drop was far better than the modest step-down economists had forecast. Still, 14.5 million Americans remain unemployed, and much more jobs have to be created for the country to pull itself out of the economic doldrums.

These are tough times for state governments. Huge deficits loom almost everywhere, from California to New York, from New Jersey to Texas.
Wait — Texas? Wasn’t Texas supposed to be thriving even as the rest of America suffered? Didn’t its governor declare, during his re-election campaign, that “we have billions in surplus”? Yes, it was, and yes, he did. But reality has now intruded, in the form of a deficit expected to run as high as $25 billion over the next two years.
And that reality has implications for the nation as a whole. For Texas is where the modern conservative theory of budgeting — the belief that you should never raise taxes under any circumstances, that you can always balance the budget by cutting wasteful spending — has been implemented most completely. Last month a little-known Chinese company came out of the woodwork to make Dutch cable making company Draka an offer that Draka could scarcely believe. Xinmao, a Tianjin-based investment company with a market value of €400 mln, was offering an all-cash takeover offer of €1 bn, outbidding Prysmian, an Italian cable company who had nearly sealed a deal for €833 mln in cash and shares.

While Republican representative John Boehner was sworn in as the Speaker of the House for Congress yesterday, newly elected Tea Party Republicans were joined by Koch Industries lobbyists like Tim Phillips, a former business partner to Jack Abramoff (imprisoned for corruption), and Nancy Pfotenhauer, a former corporate lobbyist for Koch Industries. David Koch, the rightwing billionaire who funded groups organizing the Tea Parties, was also in attendance the event. In fact after the ceremony Koch held a party for the rightwing teabaggers he bankrolled to get them into public office.

Fox Business was overjoyed yesterday by the news that Wall Street had done so well in 2010 and kept going on 2011′s first day of trading. Host Neil Cavuto explains why things are so good in the stockmarket. “As we start off a new year, it’s time to recognize a familiar historic fact,” Cavuto boasted with glee. “When you cut taxes, good things happen.”
So let’s look at the picture that was shown in the background on Fox Business.
The U.S. has the highest corporate tax rate among any of the four countries listed (even though the effective tax rate is much lower), yet the U.S. stock performance increased 11 percent in 2010. In fact the two countries with the lowest corporate tax rate did worse than the two countries with the highest rate.

In a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll conducted Nov. 29-Dec. 2 released on Monday sixty-one percent of Americans said that increasing taxes to the wealthy should be the first step toward balancing the budget.
Raising taxes on the rich beats out cuts to defense spending, Medicare and Social Security as U.S. adults’ top preference on how to close the deficit.
By contrast, 20 percent of respondents preferred cuts to defense spending as the first option, while 4 percent said that cutting Medicare would be the best way to start cutting the deficit. Three percent said they preferred cutting Social Security.

Quite a few Americans, though not enough, are aware of the fact that the majority of the media in the United States are spreading a lot of biased information and some clearcut lies. Take for example William Greider, national affairs correspondent for The Nation.

GREIDER: Reporters and editors are disturbed to learn that growing sectors of the public do not trust their reporting. But this is the natural result of one-sided reporting. It reflects the unconscious class bias of the media—looking up to selected expertise that’s in power and looking down on the everyday citizens…lots of citizens are finding their own ways to inform themselves, putting their faith in the bloggers or other renegade sources. Who can blame them?
