The AP notes that only once since taking office on Jan. 20 has President Obama used the phrase “war on terror,” which was always on the lips of President Bush. Obama has instead more broadly referenced the “enduring struggle against terrorism and extremism.” CSIS national security analyst Anthony Cordesman notes that Bush’s phrase “became associated in the minds of many people outside the Unites States and particularly in places where the countries are largely Islamic and Arab, as being anti-Islam and anti-Arab.” Indeed, a Pentagon-funded study last year recommended that the U.S. do away with the terminology as the strategy behind it was “not successful in undermining al Qai’da’s capabilities.”
Bloomberg reports that, according to recently released IRS data, “the average tax rate paid by the richest 400 Americans fell by a third to 17.2 percent through the first six years of the Bush administration and their average income doubled to $263.3 million.” Much of their income came from capital gains resulting from the Bush tax cuts:
The drop from 2001’s tax rate of 22.9 percent was due largely to ex-President George W. Bush’s push to cut tax rates on most capital gains to 15 percent in 2003.
Capital gains made up 63 percent of the richest 400 Americans’ adjusted gross income in 2006, or a combined $66.1 billion, according to the data. In all, the 400 wealthiest Americans reported a combined $105.3 billion of adjusted gross income in 2006, the most recent year for which the IRS has data.
The Wonk Room has noted how “the conservative approach of putting big corporations and the very wealthy ahead of the middle class has failed to create prosperity that can be shared by all Americans.”

Na het daverende succes van de inzamelingsactie van oude schoenen voor schoenengooier Muntadar al-Zaidi, zodat deze Iraakse journalist zijn werk naar behoren kon blijven doen, start drasties nu met de actie ‘Spaar het Schoenmonument’. Ondanks massale steun van het Iraakse volk en het weldenkende deel van de wereld heeft de Iraakse regering het door weeskindjes opgebouwde Schoenmonument in Tikrit weer afgebroken. Het gedenkteken werd opgericht ter ere van Al-Zaidi die de grote dankbaarheid van de Irakezen voor de verwoesting van hun land tot uitdrukking bracht door gratis en voor niks zijn schoenen aan de Amerikaanse president te doen toekomen.
Op het monument stond het devies van Muntadar al-Zaidi: ‘Just keep throwing shoes until they leave us alone’. Shoe sculpture to honor Bush shoe-throwing incident taken down
A large sculpture of one of the shoes thrown at President Bush last December by an Iraqi journalist was unveiled this week just outside an orphanage in Tikrit, Iraq — Saddam Hussein’s hometown. The orphans at the complex helped sculptor Laith al-Amiri build the shoe monument. “Those orphans who helped the sculptor in building this monument were the victims of Bush’s war,” said Faten Abdulqader al-Naseri, the orphanage director, adding that it “is a gift to the next generation to remember the heroic action by the journalist.”
CNN reports that local authorities took down the monument “at the request of the central government” “We will not allow anyone to use the government facilities and buildings for political motives,” said Abdullah Jabara, Salaheddin province’s deputy governor.
De Republikeinen proberen het pakket maatregelen van de Obama-regering om de Amerikaanse economie te stimuleren tegen te houden door het in de Senaat te filibusteren. Filibusteren houdt in dat een meerderheid van 60 van de 100 senators nodig is om iets aan te nemen in de Senaat. De Democraten hebben 59 senators. Sommige Republikeinen stemmen tegen omdat ze tegen het pakket zijn, anderen simpelweg om de regering van Obama een hak te zetten. Echte patriotten, die Republikeinen.
Het woord ‘filibuster’ is overigens afkomstig uit het Nederlands. Het is afgeleid van vrijbuiter, dat in dit verband wordt gebruikt als het kidnappen van het parlementaire debat.
So what, zegt u? Is dat mijn pakkie an? Ja, dat is uw pakkie an. En dat zal duidelijk te zien zijn aan de aandelenmarkt in het land waar u woont als de Republikeinen in deze pure obstructie slagen. Hoe langer het duurt voordat de Amerikaanse economie wordt opgepept, hoe langer het herstel van de economie in het land waar u woont, gaat duren.

Senate Republicans Gearing Up To Filibuster Recovery Package Despite Promises To The Contrary
Last night on NPR’s All Things Considered, host Robert Siegel asked Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) about the prospects of a Republican filibuster of the Senate’s version of the economic recovery package. Grassley responded that Republicans would indeed filibuster the package, requiring the bill to garner a 60-vote majority for passage:
SIEGEL: By the way, Senator, we always just assume that anything in the Senate requires 60 votes because there will be a filibuster threat. Is that right? Does this bill need 60 votes to pass?
GRASSLEY: Yes.
SIEGAL: It does?
GRASSLEY: Yes.
Grassley’s promise of a filibuster is surprising given the fact that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) reportedly said that Republicans “would not filibuster against the stimulus package.” He remarked earlier this month, “I don’t think this measure’s going to have any problem getting over 60 votes.”

Increasing even-handedness in the Middle East
It’s now rather clear that the debate in the U.S. over Israel and the Middle East is becoming increasingly more balanced and open, and there are even some very preliminary though encouraging signs that the Obama administration will take a more even-handed approach. As I wrote about the other day, the truly excellent report by 60 Minutes‘ Bob Simon, focusing on the destructive impact of expanding West Bank settlements, was a startling departure from the rules governing what normally would be aired in such venues with regard to Israel. As one would expect, there were angry reactions and recriminations
aimed at Simon and 60 Minutes from the same groups that, for years, have been stigmatizing even-handed discussions of Israel as illegitimate, or worse. But now, there is an important counter-weight to those efforts: J Street, which is well on its way to ending the monopoly that right-wing groups have long wielded in the U.S. when it comes to purporting to speak for Americans Jews and defining the allegedly “pro-Israel” position. J Street has launched a project praising the Simon/60 Minutes report, and has organized a letter-writing campaign to CBS in support of that segment, to balance the campaigns of criticisms from the right-wing “pro-Israel” groups. Dit vond plaats op 15 januari in het treinstation van Liverpool Street, misschien wel het mooiste station van Londen. Er waren 400 professionele dansers aanwezig, maar ook de verraste treinreizigers deden al snel mee. Niemand, behalve de dansers en het stationspersoneel wist wat er precies aan de hand was.
In het postkantoor staat een oudere man voor mij in de rij die 400 euro van zijn rekening haalt. “Ik vertrouw die pinapparaten voor geen cent”, hoor ik hem zeggen tegen het meisje achter het loket. “Ach, zo gaat het ook hoor”, antwoordt ze.
Ze geeft hem het geld en hij telt het na. “Vijftig, honderd, honderdvijftig, tweehonderd…”, dan steekt hij de rest in zijn portemonnee.
“Waarom telt u niet verder”, vraagt het meisje.
“Ach, als het zo ver klopt, “verklaart hij, “zal de rest ook wel in orde zijn.”
Het zijn kille tijden. Waar vind je nog warmte? Waar zijn je mede-mensen als je ze nodig hebt? De griep heerst in Europa en vooral alleenstaanden worden getroffen. Die omhelzen midden in de nacht hun toiletpot. Die staan midden in de nacht met hun blote voeten op het koude zeil aspirientjes te zoeken. En niemand die even een koppie thee zet, een warme kruik komt brengen. Je staat er kortom alleen voor. Maar niet als je op drasties chat. Spreeuwen hebben het dak van de gereformeerde boer Ooijen in Giessenburg ondergescheten. En het moeten wel gereformeerde spreeuwen zijn, want zie wat er staat: ‘JEZUS REDT’. Het gemeentebestuur van het Giessenburg vindt het geen gezicht en eist dat boer Ooijen de boodschap verwijdert. Voldoen hij hier niet aan dan wacht hem een dwangsom van 500 euro per week. Van Ooijen peinst er niet over de tekst te verwijderen. Volgens hem moet het de Hand van God (vzmh) zijn geweest die de vogels met hun blijde boodschap naar zijn dak heeft gestuurd.

Republicans outnumber Democratic lawmakers 2 to 1 in stimulus debate on news
During the Bush administration, the media consistently allowed conservatives to dominate their shows, booking them as guests far more often than progressives. The rationale was that Republicans were “in power.”
On Sunday, conservatives began an all-out assault on President Obama’s economic recovery plan, with House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) both announcing that they would vote against the plan as it stood. Despite Obama’s efforts at good faith outreach, congressional conservatives have continued to attack the stimulus plan with a series of false and disingenuous arguments.
The media have been aiding their efforts. In a new analysis, ThinkProgress has found that the five cable news networks — CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Fox Business and CNBC — have hosted more Republican lawmakers to discuss the plan than Democrats by a 2 to 1 ratio this week:

Dick Armey vindt dat sex tussen homosexuelen als een misdaad moet worden beschouwd. Hij zette in het partijprogramma, let op wat er op één hoop wordt gegooid: “Wij geloven dat geen homosexueel of iemand die veroordeeld is voor kindermishandeling of -misbruik een kind mag adopteren en dat bezoekrecht van minderjarigen voor die persoon moet worden verboden…”
De Dick Armey’s hebben het in Amerika gedurende het grootste deel van de laatste 20 jaar voor het zeggen gehad. Armey wil bijvoorbeeld dat de Palestijnen Gaza en de Westover verlaten en dat die gebieden aan Israel worden gegeven. Hij wil dat creationisme op school wordt onderwezen, hij wil Guantanomo openhouden waar dan ook flink gemarteld moet worden en hij wil in Irak blijven. Dick Armey and post-partisan harmony
Numerous people have commented on the deeply repellent behavior from former GOP House Majority Leader Dick Armey on Hardball yesterday, when he appeared with Salon’s Joan Walsh. You can watch the video here. After dismissively cackling every time Walsh spoke, Armey finally spat at her: ”I am so damn glad that you could never be my wife, ’cause I surely wouldn’t have to listen to that prattle from you every day.” I want to focus on two points highlighted by this episode: First, Dick Armey isn’t some obscure, aberrational Republican. He was one of the key leaders of the so-called “Gingrich Revolution” of the 1990s, when the modern incarnation of the Republican Party fully degenerated into the crazed, primitive, regional mess that it is today. He wasn’t a back-bencher. He was the Republicans’ House Majority Leader for eight years — from 1995 to 2003 (when he left Congress, failed to have his son elected to his seat, and was replaced as the GOP’s House Majority Leader by Tom DeLay).

MOSCOW/Varsseveld, January 29 (RIA Novosti) - Municipal authorities in the hometown of Guus Hiddink, the Dutch trainer of the Russian national soccer side, have decided to demolish a museum devoted to the 62-year-old, Sport Express said. The museum was opened in the Dutch town of Varsseveld in 2002 by a South Korean company after Hiddink took the Koreans to the semifinals of that year’s World Cup. The museum was visited by a large number of guests in its first two years of existence, but attendance fell off dramatically in 2005, and it was closed down. A residential building is to be built in its place.
The mayor of Amsterdam, Marius Job Cohen, and the mayor of New York, Michael R. Bloomberg, joined forces on Wednesday to announce NYC 400, a yearlong celebration of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York Harbor in 1609 aboard the Half Moon.
The fact that Hudson was English — like the people who eventually conquered the Dutch colony in New Amsterdam, in 1664, and renamed it for the Duke of York — and that New Amsterdam wasn’t officially founded until 1625 — making New York more like 384 years old than 400 — did not seem to matter much to either mayor. read on here>> (more…)
Een Nijmeegs filiaal van Albert Heijn heeft dranghekken bij de ingang geplaatst om kinderen die voetbalplaatjes sparen in het gareel te houden. Er zijn momenten dat er 50 kinderen voor de deur van de supermarkt staan die om voetbalplaatjes te vragen, aldus de bedrijfsleiding. Klanten die de winkel aan de Daalseweg in of uit gaan, moeten zich een weg banen door voetbalplaatjessparende kinderen. Die vragen mensen om de plaatjes, om daarmee hun verzameling compleet te maken. Om de supermarkt toegankelijk te houden, liet de bedrijfsleiding dranghekken plaatsen. Albert Heijn liet 100 miljoen zakjes met vijf plaatjes van bekende voetballers maken.

The CIA’s station chief at its sensitive post in Algeria is under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for allegedly raping at least two Muslim women who claim he laced their drinks with a knock-out drug, U.S. law enforcement sources tell ABC News.
Officials say the 41-year old CIA officer, a convert to Islam, was ordered home by the U.S. Ambassador, David Pearce, in October after the women came forward with their rape allegations in September.
The discovery of more than a dozen videotapes showing the CIA officer engaged in sex acts with other women has led the Justice Department to broaden its investigation to include at least one other Arab country, Egypt, where the CIA officer had been posted earlier in his career, according to law enforcement officials.
