De uitslag van de komende verkiezingen voor het Europees Parlement zal niet lijken op de jongste peiling voor de Tweede Kamer, aldus Maurice De Hond. Dat komt vooral door de verwachte lage opkomst en de onzekerheid rond de PVV. Mensen die PVV stemmen, zijn volgens De Hond niet echt geïnteresseerd in het Europees Parlement. Ze stemmen om een signaal te geven naar de Nederlandse politiek. “Of dat voldoende zal zijn om de PVV als grootste partij te laten eindigen, acht ik mogelijk maar niet waarschijnlijk.”

A Nashville hotel is citing safety concerns for turning away a conference booked for this weekend that featured controversial Dutch politician and filmmaker Geert Wilders who has criticized Islam in Europe. A group called New English Review signed a contract in January to use the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel for a two-day conference called “Understanding the Jihad in Israel, Europe and America.”
The Dutch politician Geert Wilders, whose 15-minute film, “Fitna,” has been called insulting to Muslims, was to be the keynote speaker. The film challenges radical Islam and got Wilders banned from entering Britain. The hotel’s managing director, Tom Negri, told The Tennessean newspaper that it canceled the event for the safety and health of guests and employees, but he would not provide details about those concerns.

Tensions between Washington and Jerusalem are growing after the U.S. administration’s demand that Israel completely freeze construction in all West Bank settlements. Israeli political officials expressed disappointment after Tuesday’s round of meetings in London with George Mitchell, U.S. President Barack Obama’s envoy to the Middle East.
“We’re disappointed,” said one senior official. “All of the understandings reached during the [George W.] Bush administration are worth nothing.”

Horton confirms unreleased torture photos show rape and sexual assault.
This week, the Daily Telegraph reported that the torture photos President Obama recently decided to withhold from the public depict “rape and sexual abuse.” The Pentagon denied the report, saying, “None of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article.” But yesterday, Scott Horton - a New York attorney known for his work in human rights law and the law of armed conflict - reported that he has confirmed that the photos do, in fact, “depict sexually explicit acts,” including “a government contractor engaged in an act of sodomy with a male prisoner and scenes of forced masturbation,” as well as “penetration involving phosphorous sticks and brooms.” Horton writes further:

A senior military officer familiar with the photos told me that they would likely provoke a storm of outrage if released. … Some show U.S. personnel engaged in sexual acts with prisoners and each other. In one, a female prisoner appears to have been forced to expose her breasts to be photographed. In another, a prisoner is suspended naked upside down from the top bunk of a bed in a stress position. […]
Still other withheld photographs have been circulating among U.S. soldiers who served in Iraq. One soldier showed them to me, including a photograph in which a male in a U.S. military uniform receives oral sex from a female prisoner.

Niederländische Ärzte haben für 2008 ihre Mitwirkung an 2.331 Fällen von Tötung auf Verlangen und Hilfe zur Selbsttötung gemeldet. Das seien exakt zehn Prozent mehr als im Jahr zuvor. In zehn Fällen stellte die Kommission fest, dass Ärzte gegen die vom Gesetz vorgeschriebene Sorgfalt verstossen hätten. Diese Fälle seien der Staatsanwaltschaft und der Inspektion für die Gesundheitsfürsorge gemeldet worden.
Die meisten Menschen, die freiwillig aus dem Leben scheiden wollten, waren laut dem Bericht krebskrank. Der überwiegende Teil erhielt zu Hause Sterbehilfe, nur 145 starben im Krankenhaus und 198 in Pflegeheimen.
In den Niederlanden ist aktive Sterbehilfe erlaubt, allerdings gelten dafür strikte Kriterien: Sterbehilfe darf nur geleistet werden, wenn der Patient sie selbst bei klarem Verstand verfügt hat, dieser unheilbar krank ist und nachweislich unter unerträglichen Schmerzen leidet.

Die katholischen Pfarreien in den Niederlanden müssen sich offenbar auf drastisch sinkende Zahlen beim Kirchenbesuch einstellen. Forscher erwarten in den kommenden zehn Jahren einen Rückgang von 30 bis 35 Prozent. Nach Medienangaben schätzt das katholische Forschungsinstitut Kaski in Nimwegen, dass im Jahr 2020 landesweit nur noch 200.000 Menschen zur Sonntagsmesse zu erwarten seien.
