Gisteren werd de Democratische vertegenwoordiger van het Amerikaanse Congress, Gabrielle Giffords, neergeschoten door een 22-jarige man die ook op twintig andere mensen schoot waarbij hij zes doodde. De verdachte is Jared Lee Loughner - in de VS lezen ze wel de rechten voor maar gebruiken ze geen initialen. Op het internet hield hij scheldpartijen tegen de Amerikaanse overheid.
De Politieke Actie Commissie (PAC) van Sarah Palin had tot gisteren een kaart op haar website staan waarin het vizier van een geweer stond gericht op het district van de Congresswoman. Dat omdat ze voor betaalbare gezondheidszorg heeft gestemd voor iedereen. Palin noemde dat een stem voor ‘deathpanels’. Eerder werd het hoofdkwartier van Giffords gevandaliseerd en stafleden van haar aangevallen. Giffords zelf waarschuwde vorig jaar dat het richten van een vizier conseqeunties zou kunnen hebben.
Nu vecht ze voor haar leven na een schot door het hoofd.
Hoe reageert de Republikein Lamar Alexander op een vraag van CNN-reporter Candy Crowley over Palin’s afbeelding op haar website?

Ook drasties feliciteert bij dezen de heer Volkert Engelsman die niet alleen terecht maar zeker ook verdiend de onderscheiding heeft gekregen voor zijn tomeloze promotie van AGF wereldwijd.

The most famous long distance skating race in the world is the Eleven Cities Race in Friesland, the Netherlands. De Elfstedentocht! It is a dangerous adventure and people are advised not to try and take part in this event over two hundred kilometers in the northern, still partly unexplored, part of the Netherlands.
Many people have lost their lives trying to finish that race.
Some died of exhaustion, some drowned when they didnt see a wak, some lost their way in the barren lands and where never seen again, some just lost the will to live after realising they were not gonna be there in time to get their Elfstedenkruisje.
This year the chance that it will be held looks pretty good. It’s freezing out there. Having skated just 80 kilometers long distance myself once, JdeW once more urges everyone to stay away as far as possible from Friesland and the Elfstedentocht.

How difficult is it?
That depends a lot on the weather conditions. In 1909, the winner Minne Hoekstra took almost 14 hours to cover the distance, in 1997 Henk Angenent just took seven hours. Experts say 1963 was the most difficult race. It was minus 18 degrees Celsius. Only 69 skaters out of 10,000 made it to the finish: the worst ever result in the history of the race. The title of a recent film on the Tour that year says it all, it is called ‘The hell of `63’

En weer wordt een talentvolle jeugdvoetballer uit Nederland weggelokt door het grote geld. De vijftienjarige Nathan Ake gaat van de jeugdopleiding van Feyenoord naar Chelsea. Het is zowiezo al moeilijk om een beetje goed voetbal in Nederland te houden maar zo wordt het natuurlijk volstrekt onmogelijk. Gelukkig is Leo Beenhakker directeur van Feyenoord. Laat het maar aan Leo over om dit schandaal onder de aandacht te brengen van de wereld.
Engelse clubs zijn de Grote Witte Haaien van het voetbal.

PREDATORS!: CHELSEA SLAMMED FOR SWOOP TO LURE FEYENOORD TEENAGER

Chelsea are at the centre of another international transfer storm after luring promising teenager Nathan Ake away from Feyenoord, leaving the furious Dutch club calling them “the great white sharks of football”.
Premier League champions Chelsea have agreed to sign the highly rated Ake, who will be 16 in February, before Feyenoord had a chance to offer him a professional contract.

This week the Washington Post - once a very good newspaper - announced a new blog written by conservative religious activist Jordan Sekulow.
Sekulow is a man who claims that the United States is not only a Christian nation but that “America has a special relationship with God.” Sekulow is a fierce proponent of the Oklahoma’s ban on sharia law. “The threat of Sharia law is real and the people of Oklahoma are ahead of the curve.”
But what some progressive Americans are most worried about is that he pals around with the likes of Dutchman Geert Wilders.

On September 11, 2010, Sekulow spoke at a Manhattan rally protesting the Park 51 Islamic Cultural Center (which, like event organizer Pamela Geller, he refers to as a “shrine to terror“) alongside far-right Dutch anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders.
In an article on conservatives’ embrace of Islamophobia, journalist Michelle Goldberg wrote, “A new type of religious bigotry has entered American politics, one more blatant than anything we’ve seen since the Twin Towers fell.” By giving Sekulow a platform, the Washington Post is legitimizing that bigotry.

Julian Assange, WikiLeaks-founder, is released on bail in London Thursday evening. He was held in Wandsworth prison since Dec. 7 when he was detained on sex assault charges at the requeset of Sweden.
Assange - It’s great to smell the fresh air of London again - thanked the British justice system. “During my time in solitary confinement in the bottom of Victorian prison, I had time to reflect on the conditions of those people around the world who also are also in solitary confinement, also on remand in conditions more difficult that those faced by me,” he told his supporters and members of the press.
“Those people also need your attention and support.”
“And with that, I hope to continue my work and continue to protest my innocence in this matter and to reveal, as we get it, which we have not yet, the evidence from these allegations. Thank you,” Assange concluded without taking any questions.

UPDATE, december 16th, 2010 at 4:54 pm, JdeW - Today this blog drasties couldn’t be seen for an hour. Most likely because I published earlier today a ’secret diplomatic cable’ which came from the site of the British newspaper The Guardian. In this diplomatic cable departing U.S ambassador Clifford Sobel offered his very positive thoughts on the Netherlands.
I’m pretty sure that action was taken against drasties because of the publication of this cable.
Who it was and where it came from? I have no idea.
In the end I’m a little bit proud and a little bit concerned.
Proud because I got a visit from a lot of great American patriots.
Concerned because I would like to keep drasties up and running.

Earlier, JdeW - The Guardian published a secret US embassy cable about the Netherlands. In this cable departing US ambassador Clifford Sobel offers his thoughts on how the US could develop even stronger relations with the Dutch. He describes the Netherlands as a “vital transatlantic anchor.” ’They are our best partner in developing pilot projects in the counterterrorism area, and are world leaders in development, free trade, international law and human rights.’
Sobel also suggests that the U.S. and others push the Dutch into taking a leading role in balancing the traditional Spanish dominance on Latin American, to counter Venezuelan “meddling” in the Caribbean.

Glenn Greenwald is consumed by the widespread lie in the American media that WikiLeaks ‘indiscriminate’ dumped secret cables of the American government on the internet. This lie proves powerfully how mindlessly subservient the American establishment media has become. They are willing to repeat completely false claims as long as it pleases the right people — the same people to whom they claim they are ‘adversarial watchdogs’.
How reporting on WikiLeaks can and should be done shows this editorial from The Guardian yesterday, in which the British newspaper not only defends WikiLeaks, but also justifies the ‘denial of service’ attacks from anonymous individuals. One of them is the yesterday arrested sixteen year old boy boy from the Netherlands who hacked various companies (MasterCard, Amazon, Paypal, etc.) who are serving in the Government’s war on WikiLeaks.

The Guardian - These companies all considered that their association with WikiLeaks damaged their brand image, a reflection prompted in some cases by a helpful call from the US state department. In essence they are trying to have it both ways: pretending in their marketing that they are free spirits and enablers of the cyber world, but only living up to that image as long as they don’t upset anyone really important…
The hacktivists of Anonymous may be accused of many things – such as immaturity or being run by a herd instinct. But theirs is the cyber equivalent of non-violent action or civil disobedience. It disrupts rather than damages.

European officials have often pointed out that English spelling is unnecessarily difficult. For example: cough, plough, rough, through and thorough. What is clearly needed is a phased programme of changes to iron out these anomalies. The programme would, of course, be administered by a committee staffed at top level by all participating nations.

Did you see the saucy poster campaign at Westfield Shopping Centre? A Dutch woman touches herself up a bit to advertise, er, Dutch suits? Repeat… Dutch suits.
It’s the latest advertising campaign from a menswear store called Suit Supply. It shows a series of ‘shocking’ - to the Brits - images including a woman touching her naked breast next to a man (in a suit) and one of the same woman in a fur coat and pearls and not much else being kissed by a man (in a suit).
Hurry, you have to be fast to see them because today the shopping centre told Suit Supply to remove the eight-foot-high lit-up images. You know: British and nakedness and all of that.
The shopping centre is apologising for any offence caused.

The British Office of National Statistics released data on the most popular baby names in 2009. The statistics reveal that different variations of the name Oliver were the most popular name for English babies during that year, and also that if different spellings are not counted together, that Mohammed was the name most often used by parents to name their children.
On Friday’s Real Time With American comedian Bill Maher referenced the data and asked, “Am I a racist to feel that I’m alarmed by that?”
He continued, “I don’t have to apologize, do I, for not wanting the Western world to be taken over by Islam in 300 years?” Conservative guest Margaret Hoover replied, “If you were NPR, you’d be fired.” After Maher admitted that his comments were “similar” to Williams’s, guest Lawrence O’Donnell claimed that Maher’s statement is actually “way worse than what Juan Williams said”:

Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg yesterday called for an inquiry into the trove of leaked U.S. military files from the Iraq war that document prisoner abuses by Iraqi forces, insurgent and sectarian violence and civilians shot at checkpoints by U.S. troops. Clegg said that allegations of British misconduct “are extremely serious and need to be looked at.”

Er bestaan ook neoconervatieven buiten Amerika maar veel zijn het er gelukkig niet. Dat komt omdat er in Europa lang niet zoveel domme mensen te vinden zijn als in de VS die in hun lulkoek trappen. Maar ze ziin er, bijvoorbeeld in Engeland David Pryce-Jones. Hij heeft een boek geschreven over de Arabsche cultuur (let wel: van voor de Islam) dus hij snapt Geert Wilders.
Volgens hem wilde Nederland Wilders opsluiten in de gevangenis: einde vrijheid van meningsuiting wat betreft moslims.
Volgens mij was het proces er vooral omdat een aantal moslims een aanklacht had ingediend tegen Wilders. Nog altijd een grondrecht in Nederland. Vervolgens kwam het tot een proces omdat een aantal rechters het een goed idee vond om de partijen eens te laten formuleren wat volgens hen wel en niet kan wat betreft meningsuiting in Nederland. Duidelijkheid verschaffen dus.
Het is verder maar een heel kort stukje hoor van David Pryce-Jones.

Deze twitter verstuurde Geert Wilders gisteren over het etentje van arabist Hans Jansen met Tom Schalken, lid van het Amsterdamse Gerechtshof. Inderdaad, het gerechtshof dat Geert Wilders voor de rechter heeft gesleept vanwege haatzaaien, discriminatie en groepsbelediging. En hetzelfde proces waar deskundige Jansen later zou gaan getuigen.
De twitter is overigens niet meer te vinden maar wel vastgelegd.

Drasties doet veel aan hoe landen omgaan met minderheden. De wijze waarop een staat omgaat met minderheden en zwakkeren (vrouwen, kinderen, dieren) vinden wij de belangrijkste maat voor de beschaving van een samenleving.
In Oeganda verscheen onlangs een krant met foto’s van de honderd belangrijkste homo’s van het land en de oproep om ze op te hangen. Eerder probeerden de leiders in dat Afrikaanse semi-dictatuurtje een wet in te voeren die homosexueel gedrag strafbaar zou maken, en wel met de dood.
Opvallend is dat de gewaardeerde Amerikaanse priester Rick Warren, die de inzegening van het presidentschap van Barack Obama deed, heel goede banden heeft met de religieuze leiders in Oeganda. Sterker nog, de voorgestelde wetgeving in Oeganda was geinspireerd door drie Amerikaanse evangelisten die in 2009 in Oeganda de blijde boodschap van Jezus Christus kwamen brengen: dood aan de homo’s. Niet lang na hun bezoek kwam de Oegandese minister van Justitie met het wetsvoorstel dat die boodschap van God moest legaliseren, de Anti-Homosexualiteit Wet. De wet heeft het vanwege internationale druk niet gehaald.
Maar als de haat eenmaal is aangewakkerd, is die moeilijk te stoppen, zie maar.
