Jan-Peter Balkenende vertrok volgens sommigen tot opluchting van de tweede kamer naar Brussel. Door zijn nederige afkomst en beperkte intellectuele vermogens was hij een vreemde eend in de bijt. In Brussel werd hij een van de weinigen die bereid was om echte beslissingen te nemen.
Op de Dam in Amsterdam vraagt een blonde jongeman met stekelhaar om geld voor eten. Als ik hem wat euro’s geef, kijkt hij me aan en zegt: „Waarom heeft de PVV geen leden meer?”
Nog voor zijn woorden goed tot me doordringen, mompelt hij: „Omdat ze niks meer hebben om over te kankeren.”
Trouwe drasties bezoekers hebben elkaar gisteren voor het eerst in levende lijve gezien in Utrecht. Nadat eerder De Schrijvende Rechter en Warhoofd elkaar de hand reikten in de Mort Subite in Brussel waren het nu Weeromstuit en Mopperkont en diverse anonieme reageerders die elkaar ontmoetten in café Springhaver in Utrecht.

Nederland heeft bijna drie caravans per honderd inwoners. In de hele wereld heeft alleen Zweden er iets meer - 294 op 285 per 10.000 inwoners. Nederland stond altijd eerste maar nu niet meer dus. Allochtonen zeker weer. Denemarken is derde. Kortom, landen met Viking bloed hebben caravans.
Wohnwagendichte in Schweden höher als in Holland
Die Niederlande sind nicht mehr Europas Wohnwagen-Nation Nummer eins! In Schweden gibt es auf 10 000 Einwohner 294 Caravans, in den Niederlanden kommen nur 285 Anhängern auf 10 000 Einwohner.
Immerhin belegen die Niederländer damit noch Rang zwei. Den dritten Platz nimmt Dänemark mit 263 Caravans je 10 000 Einwohner ein. Deutschland erreicht laut Caravaning Industrie Verband (CIVD) mit 116 Caravans/10 000 Einwohner Platz sieben, liegt aber noch deutlich über dem Europa-Schnitt (104 Caravans pro 10 000 Einwohner).

Tony Blair is too big for Europe’s Lilliputs Wall Street Journal - The Lisbon Treaty appears to be on the cusp of final ratification, and with it Brussels will gain something it has long sought - a President of the European Union. That in turn may finally answer Henry Kissinger’s famous question about what number to call to reach “Europe.”
But this only raises a second question: When that president calls other world leaders, will they pick up the phone? Probably not, if Europe’s most ardent federalists get their way. Een oude man kwam bij ons in het ziekenhuis. Voor het eerst, vermeldde hij niet zonder trots. Op dokters orders gaf ik hem een fles voor zijn urine voor het onderzoek.
“Doe het hier maar in”, zei ik en wees hem het toilet.
Hij kwam terug en gaf me een lege fles: ”Ik was het toch niet nodig. Er is daar een toilet.”
Gaat Heineken aandelen uitgeven om de aankoop van Mexico’s grootste bierbrouwerij Femsa te financieren? Heineken werkt al samen met deze brouwer. Probleem is dat het aandeel van de familie Heineken -geleidt door Charlene de Carvalho -in Heineken dan onder de vijftig procent zal zakken, volgens dit verhaal in de New York Times. Maar als ze het niet doen, valt hun partner mogelijk in handen van hun aartsvijand, de grote Amerikaanse concurrent SABMiller. Moeilijke keuze. Misschien voorlopig maar even geen aandelen Heineken kopen?
Heineken is in a standoff with itself in Mexico, Breakingviews.com says. The Dutch beer giant reportedly covets the south-of-the-border brewer Femsa, which is on the block. But Heineken would struggle to finance much more than half of Femsa’s nearly $7.5 billion price tag with debt. A bashful traveller was reunited with a mystery Dutch girl he fell for on the bus. Smitten Gareth Mailer, 23, was too shy to ask her number - but he knew her name, Michelle, and the Dundee street where she was staying with her sister. With just days to go before she was due to return to Amsterdam, he covered nearby roads with flyers begging her to get in touch. After spotting Gareth’s plea, Michelle emailed him - and the couple have now been on their first date. Last night Gareth, of Montrose, said: “I didn’t know what else to do. I was worried people would think I’d gone a little crazy, but I just wanted the chance to see her again. I was delighted because she wrote a long email in response. I think she thought it was a very romantic gesture.”
Gareth fell for Michelle as he travelled back to Scotland from a job interview in Manchester last Wednesday. His poster plea said: “I know this is a bit crazy but I really liked speaking to you and this is the only way I can think to get in touch with you.”
Now he’s already planning to visit her in the Netherlands.
Gareth - who was flooded with good luck emails from people who saw his signs - added: “We got on really well, it was just the same as it had been on the bus. I think I’ll be going out to visit for a weekend soon.”

Jammer dat deze talentvolle man, Tony Blair, alle geloofwaardigheid heeft verloren door zich samen met president George Bush voor het karretje van de Amerikaanse neoconservatieven te laten spannen. Heel mooi om te horen dat het economisch gezien goed gaat in de Westbank. Economische vooruitgang is essentieel. Als mensen iets te verliezen hebben, zijn ze veel eerder bereid om met de tegenpartij te onderhandelen en compromissen te sluiten.
