Soms lijkt het alsof de media in de V.S. worden gedomineerd door zieke figuren als Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly en Sean Hannity. Op de Nederlandse tv kom je dat soort types niet tegen. En iemand als Glenn Beck al helemaal niet.
Hij is enorm populair in Amerika. Waarom? Omdat het een halve gare is, een dwaas waar heel wat steekjes aan loszitten, maar ook omdat hij iets heeft. Hij is op zijn manier spannend. Hij raaskalt, hij schreeuwt, hij preekt, hij huichelt, hij huilt als een kind… Het is een tikkende tijdbom.
Zijn show op Fox News is allereerst populair bij extreem rechtse mislukkelingen die hem serieus nemen. Maar ook verstandige mensen die wel eens willen lachen of griezelen, kijken er graag naar. Want je staat er versteld van wat hij allemaal durft te zeggen om het schorriemorrie in de VS op te hitsen tegen de democratisch verkozen regering.
Bekendst is zijn uitspraak: ‘Obama has a deep seated hatred for white people’.
Nu de Democratische volksvertegenwoordiger Gabrielle Giffords is neergeschoten door een anti-regerings dwaas roept Glenn Beck op tegen geweld. Dat hoort zo.

Nothing says “stop the violence” better than pretending to be a bad-ass motherfucker with a gun.
Gisteren werd de Democratische vertegenwoordiger van het Amerikaanse Congress, Gabrielle Giffords, neergeschoten door een 22-jarige man die ook op twintig andere mensen schoot waarbij hij zes doodde. De verdachte is Jared Lee Loughner - in de VS lezen ze wel de rechten voor maar gebruiken ze geen initialen. Op het internet hield hij scheldpartijen tegen de Amerikaanse overheid.
De Politieke Actie Commissie (PAC) van Sarah Palin had tot gisteren een kaart op haar website staan waarin het vizier van een geweer stond gericht op het district van de Congresswoman. Dat omdat ze voor betaalbare gezondheidszorg heeft gestemd voor iedereen. Palin noemde dat een stem voor ‘deathpanels’. Eerder werd het hoofdkwartier van Giffords gevandaliseerd en stafleden van haar aangevallen. Giffords zelf waarschuwde vorig jaar dat het richten van een vizier conseqeunties zou kunnen hebben.
Nu vecht ze voor haar leven na een schot door het hoofd.
Hoe reageert de Republikein Lamar Alexander op een vraag van CNN-reporter Candy Crowley over Palin’s afbeelding op haar website?
CROWLEY: Was it over the line, sort of specifically, since it’s now being talked about everywhere, with Sarah Palin’s web ads about people that she would like to see targeted for political defeat. ALEXANDER: Well, Candy, I think you’re responsible, by bringing this up, of doing the very thing you’re trying to condemn. You’re making and implying a direct connection between Sarah Palin and what happened. You’re picking out a particular incident. Drasties is van plan een aantal VK-bloggers uit te nodigen om hier verder te bloggen. Uiteraard zal een deel van de VK-bloggers voor zichzelf beginnen maar er zijn er vast die daar de tijd en de zin niet voor hebben en het kost ook geld natuurlijk.
Op drasties krijgen de bloggers dan hun eigen logo en hun eigen categorie. Drasties gaat bovendien op korte termijn qua uiterlijk vernieuwen en dat zou mooi gecombineerd kunnen worden met hun komst.
Er zijn twee mogelijkheden op drasties.
1. Hier kopij inleveren die door drasties wordt verwerkt.
2. Zelf direct toegang krijgen tot je eigen rubriek op drasties.
Iedereen krijgt zijn eigen logo boven ieder stuk dat hij/zij plaatst.
Ieder eigen blog wordt vermeld op de voorpagina van drasties, los van de categorien.
Geen enkele bezoeker hoeft dus nog te zoeken naar hun favoriete blog.
Er is geen censuur of directe controle, er moet slechts aan minimale algemene regels worden voldaan qua presentatie.
Er zijn op drasties al enkele VK-bloggers actief. Apiedapie, Ilona, Vogelman en Ramirezi veelvuldig. Anderen als onder meer Kuifje Simon, rudolfhendriques1 enz. sporadisch. Een voordeel van bloggen hier is dat Drasties zorgt voor moderatie van ongepaste reacties. Drasties heeft een groeiend aantal bezoekers van nu tot zo’n 3.000 per dag.
Graag zou ik een aantal mensen verwelkomen die goed over wetenschap schrijven.
En over religie. Er zitten ook geweldige dichters op het VK-blog. Fotografen zoals Ramirezi die hier al zijn eigen categorie heeft. Apiedapie en Ilona zijn hier begonnen.
Verder denk ik ook aan de VK-cartonisten. En expats, kunstenaars…

Weet u het nog? De carchase in Fort Worth waar heidense stadsbussen dagelijks op de hielen worden gezeten door een goddelijk truckje.
Op de bussen staat: ‘Millions of Americans are - Good without God’.
Op het truckje: ‘I still love you - God’.
Het is het front in de, door Fox News bedachte, ‘War on Christmas’. De oorlog die er omgaat of in de VS ‘Gelukkig Kerstfeest’ mag worden vervangen door ‘Prettige Feestdagen’ of niet.
Deze week vond er een discussie plaats tusen Bill O’Reilly en de Amerikaanse atheist David Silverman op Fox News waarin O’Reilly uitlegt hoe hij zo zeker weet dat God bestaat.
This week Bill O’Reilly explained on his Fox News show how he knows there is a God.
He was discussing religion with David Silverman of American Atheists who, according to O’Reilly, are running ’insulting’ ads calling religion a ’scam’.
Like: ‘Millions of Americans are Good without God’.
O’REILLY: I’ll tell you why [religion’s] not a scam, in my opinion: tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that.SILVERMAN: Tide goes in, tide goes out?
O’REILLY: See, the water, the tide comes in and it goes out, Mr. Silverman. It always comes in, and always goes out. You can’t explain that.
Well Billo, we’ve known about this ‘water comes in and water goes out’ for some time now. In fact since Isaac Newton first accurately described and predicted tides by lunar cycles in his Principia, published in 1687.
Het VK-blog stopt er mee en dat vind ik - JdeW - jammer. Ik keek er graag rond en vroeg zo af en toe of ik iets op dit blog mocht herposten. Bijna altijd mocht dat.
Het enige betreurenswaardige aan het blog was dat steeds meer mensen en meningen werden geweerd. Of omdat ze anders dachten of omdat ze scherper waren dan gebruikelijk. Uiteindelijk ging het VK-blog steeds meer op een besloten club lijken waar voor eigen parochie werd gepreekt.
Zo was er een VK-blogger van wie ik, met zijn toestemming, een stuk op drasties herpostte. Daarop kwam veel kritiek van bezoekers van drasties. Na flink wat geharrewar bleek die kritiek geheel juist. De blogger had dus wat geleerd.
Positief zou je zeggen.
Echter toen toen ik hem maanden later vroeg of hij de daaropvolgende discussie onder zijn stuk nog had gevolgd, verzuchtte hij:
“Nee, waar is het allemaal goed voor.” !?!?
Een aantal van de bloggers gaat vast een eigen blog oprichten maar als er bloggers zijn die daar geen zin in (of tijd voor) hebben dan kunnen ze wellicht verder bloggen op drasties.
Een aantal schrijvers is van harte welkom.
Ze moeten wel tegen een stootje kunnen.

If the Dutch government carries out its intention of closing down all coffee shops located within 350 meters of a school, six out of ten of these cannabis selling establishments will have to go. That according to a survey by newspaper NRC Handelsblad, a newspaper well known in the Netherlands for it’s relentless investigative journalism.
The newspaper used a walking distance of 350 metres as the basis for its calculations. However, if the cabinet were to use a straight line as the basis for its calculations, the number of coffee shops facing closure would even be higher. In Amsterdam alone 187 of the current 223 coffee shops would have to close.

Een artikel van Glenn Greenwald over de zogenaamd objectieve Amerikaanse pers. Bijna alles betreffende Irak was een hoax, behalve de dood van honderdduizenden Irakezen natuurlijk. Dit gaat over het door het Amerikaanse leger geensceneerde neerhalen van het beeld van Saddam Hoessein op Firdos Square in Bagdad. Dat zogenaamd door de Irakezen met groot gejuich werd ontvangen. “Men and women wept, and reached out to shake the hands of the marines, or simply touch their uniforms. “Thank you, mister!”", schreef een Amerikaanse journalist.
Een grote hoax.
Ook gaat het over de grote bewondering die er bestaat voor het Amerikaanse leger, in Amerika dan voornamelijk. Iedere dag eren de Amerikanen hun soldaten overal in de VS. Daar doet echt iedereen aan mee, ook de liberale media. Ja, zelfs op mijn favoriete progressieve blogs gebeurt dat. Pure blindheid. Hoe kan een normaal mens het leger nu iets vinden om te eren en te loven? Wat valt er te bewonderen aan mensen die jaren van hun leven geven om getraind te worden in het doodmaken van andere mensen? Daarvoor heb je een leger, om zoveel mogelijk mensen dood te maken. Mij lijkt het iets om je voor te schamen.
En puur militair heeft Amerika, voorzover ik het kan zien, ondanks dat ze de grootste bommen en granaten van de wereld hebben, de laatste decennia maar weinig oorlogen gewonnen. Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, allemaal mislukkingen. En om Irak een succes te noemen?

It really doesn’t matter what you feed the Fox public, Americans just keep on watching that propaganda network.
Fox Business was overjoyed yesterday by the news that Wall Street had done so well in 2010 and kept going on 2011′s first day of trading. Host Neil Cavuto explains why things are so good in the stockmarket. “As we start off a new year, it’s time to recognize a familiar historic fact,” Cavuto boasted with glee. “When you cut taxes, good things happen.”
So let’s look at the picture that was shown in the background on Fox Business.
The U.S. has the highest corporate tax rate among any of the four countries listed (even though the effective tax rate is much lower), yet the U.S. stock performance increased 11 percent in 2010. In fact the two countries with the lowest corporate tax rate did worse than the two countries with the highest rate.
Quite a few Americans, though not enough, are aware of the fact that the majority ofthe media in the United States are spreading a lot of biased information and some clearcut lies. Take for example William Greider, national affairs correspondent for The Nation.
GREIDER: Reporters and editors are disturbed to learn that growing sectors of the public do not trust their reporting. But this is the natural result of one-sided reporting. It reflects the unconscious class bias of the media—looking up to selected expertise that’s in power and looking down on the everyday citizens…lots of citizens are finding their own ways to inform themselves, putting their faith in the bloggers or other renegade sources. Who can blame them?

What being a Christian in the United States of America means, on Fox News, was made perfectly clear by Tucker Carlson, who was filling in for Sean Hannity. He said that NFL quarterback Michael Vick - [a black quarterback (JdeW)] - should have been executed for killing dogs in dog fights. He reacted to praise by President Obama for the American Footballteam Philidelphia Eagles for giving Vick, who served time in prison, a second change.
Of course no one should be surprised by Carlson remarks, since earlier he asked for the summary execution of Sarah Palin for killing defenseless caribous on her TLC reality show, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. Apparently MSNBC host Cenk Uygur missed that last remark.
Crooks and Liars - “Now, I’m a Christian,” Carlson announced, while filling in for Fox News’ Republican commentator Sean Hannity. “I’ve made mistakes myself. I believe fervently in second chances but Michael Vick killed dogs and he did it in a heartless and cruel way and I think, personally, he should have been executed for that.”

Al vele jaren woon ik in het buitenland. En al die jaren krijg ik een Nederlandse krant thuis bezorgd. Heerlijk. Iedere dag ben ik bezig op het internet, iedere dag uren achter de computer maar ook ga ik mijn hele leven al iedere dag buitenshuis lunchen en dan wil ik een Nederlandse krant in de handen houden. Een krant die je overal kunt lezen. In de auto in de file, tijdens het eten, tijdens het werk, als je zit te wachten. Heerlijk. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat het er ooit uitgaat.

Dit gaat gierend uit de hand lopen!
Moderatie van o.a. Telegraaf vindt plaats door een particulier bedrijf dat bij welke twijfel dan ook de zweep hanteert. Schijnt gangbaar te zijn in uitgeversland. Mischien doet NRC dat ook wel, dat er een WAO-er met MAVO en ‘belangstelling voor computers’ die lekker thuis zit te deleten. Of iemand in Bangalore die in aldaar vloeiend Nederlands heeft geleerd, maar het cultureel nauwelijks kan plaatsen. Komt ook steeds meer voor.
NRC snapt weinig meer van papieren kranten en al helemaal niks van digitale publishing.
Op DailyKos wordt het laatste stuk van Glenn Greenwald aangeprezen. Een must read, aldus oprichter Kos van DailyKos. Het valt Greenwald op dat er nauwelijks onderscheid is te maken in Amerika tussen journalisten en politici. Ze praten hetzelfde en ze denken hetzelfde.
Het doet Greenwald denken aan de absurde discussie over de massavernietigingswapens van Saddam Hoessein.
In 2003 zouden die volop in Irak aanwezig zijn geweest, zo kletste in de VS iedereen iedereen na, terwijl Irak vele jaren onderste boven was gehaald door VN-wapenexperts op zoek naar die wapens en het luchtruim al vele jaren volledig werd gecontroleerd door Amerikaanse vliegtuigen.
Ook nu identificeren de establishment journalisten zich in hun afkeer van Julian Assange en WikiLeaks weer volledig met de politici en fungeren ze feitelijk als woordvoerder voor de politieke klasse. In de meeste Westerse landen worden journalisten die het geheime doen en laten van hun regering aan de kaak stellen, geprezen, in de VS gehoond.

Over the last month, I’ve done many television and radio segments about WikiLeaks and what always strikes me is how indistinguishable — identical — are the political figures and the journalists. There’s just no difference in how they think, what their values and priorities are, how completely they’ve ingested and how eagerly they recite the same anti-WikiLeaks, “Assange = Saddam” script. So absolute is the WikiLeaks-is-Evil bipartisan orthodoxy among the Beltway political and media class (forever cemented by the joint Biden/McConnell decree that Assange is a “high-tech Terrorist,”) that you’re viewed as being from another planet if you don’t spout it. It’s the equivalent of questioning Saddam’s WMD stockpile in early 2003.

In the United States spending on online advertising ($25.8 billion) on the internet will exceed for the first time ever newspaper advertising ($22.8 billion), according to the Wall Street Journal. A development that has been building for several years:
It isn’t just that newspapers are facing fiercer competition from the Web. Recently released findings by Forrester Research show that U.S. consumers, on average, now spend as much time online as they do watching television. But they aren’t spending less time in front of their TVs. What they are doing less of is listening to the radio and reading newspapers and magazines offline, Forrester says.
Penelope Cruz, the actress famous for her sensuous roles and intriguing relationships with Hollywood co-stars, is pregnant. Nothing wrong with that. What is wrong, according to rightwing Americans and Fox News, is that she decided to give birth in the United States.
That prompted Fox News Latino (in a story removed from the site later) to claim that she was “having an anchor baby.” Turns out that Fox News even writes its Latino site from the perspective of a white Tea Party activist. But it’s not just that the term is offensive. In Penelope’s case, it’s absolutely wrong.
True she’s a little like brownish… but she’s not Latino, she’s Spanish.
What is an ‘anchor baby’?
The term originates in the notion that undocumented immigrants seek specifically to have children born in the United States. The logic goes that those children will automatically be citizens because of the birthright citizenship clause in the 14th amendment. [read on] (more…)
This week the Washington Post - once a very good newspaper - announced a new blog written by conservative religious activist Jordan Sekulow.
Sekulow is a man who claims that the United States is not only a Christian nation but that “America has a special relationship with God.” Sekulow is a fierce proponent of the Oklahoma’s ban on sharia law. “The threat of Sharia law is real and the people of Oklahoma are ahead of the curve.”
But what some progressive Americans are most worried about is that he pals around with the likes of Dutchman Geert Wilders.

On September 11, 2010, Sekulow spoke at a Manhattan rally protesting the Park 51 Islamic Cultural Center (which, like event organizer Pamela Geller, he refers to as a “shrine to terror“) alongside far-right Dutch anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders.
In an article on conservatives’ embrace of Islamophobia, journalist Michelle Goldberg wrote, “A new type of religious bigotry has entered American politics, one more blatant than anything we’ve seen since the Twin Towers fell.” By giving Sekulow a platform, the Washington Post is legitimizing that bigotry.
Americans who watch Fox News almost daily are significantly more misinformed on many issues, according to this poll by World Public Opinion (WPO). And Fox News? Fox News does what is does best, distort the facts.
