Is uw ikje niet geplaatst door het NRC Handelsblad, een maand nadat u hem hebt ingestuurd, maar bent u er toch trots op, dan kunt u het aan de vergetelheid ontrukken door het te publiceren op drasties in de categorie Trots Op Ikje. Rienk H. Kamer zat maandenlang in een gevangenis in Los Angeles op verdenking van fraude met zijn American Land Program. Hij werd uiteindelijk niet veroordeeld en reisde op kosten van de Amerikaanse rechtbank eerste klas terug naar Nederland. Op Schiphol vroeg ik hem of hij nog wat geld over had. “Nee”, antwoordde Kamer, “ik ben straatarm op een miljoen na.”
Vervolgens reden we met vrienden van hem in een grote wagen naar zijn appartement in Scheveningen. In de badplaats aangekomen wees Rienk naar buiten.
“Zie je wel hoe blij de mensen zijn dat ik vrij ben.” Ik keek uit het raam naar de huizen die voorbijgleden maar zag niemand. “Hoezo dat”, vroeg ik.
“Kijk dan, overal die bordjes. ‘Zimmer frei’!”
Er zou iets missen in de Nederlandse media. Kort samengevat: Ene Rutger Castricum die op puberale wijze andere mensen lastig valt. Vandaar Powned. GeenStijl heeft de 50.000 leden, dus ze kunnen de tv op. Maar wat blijkt. GeenStijl gaat gewoon buitenlandse series kopen om die twee uur per week te vullen. Vooral van Amerikanen. En oude series knallen ze gewoon online. Stoer hè? Knallen!

Wat we in Cannes doen? Formatjes kopen, net als iedereen. Want dat is makkelijker dan zelf wat bedenken. Hebben wij ook niet ergens een vergeten genocide liggen? Ik bedoel, zijn wij als Nederlanders nooit uitgeroeid? Want tegenwoordig tel je als volk echt niet mee als je niet een beetje genocide hebt ondergaan. Mogen wij de Afrikaners, door de Britten opgesloten in concentratiekampen, meetellen? Of misschien de genocide in Dokkum (754, Bonifacius door Friezen), Den Haag (1672, Johan en Jan de Wit door Hagenezen) of De Gooische Moordenaar (1881, Den Haag-Scheveningen, stoomtram: 29 doden).

A protest has been held in the Netherlands against the genocide Armenians committed in Baku on March 31, 1918. “The protest action was held in Rotterdam upon the initiative of the Congress of Azerbaijanis in Benelux and Azerbaijan-Netherlands Solidarity Society,” State Diaspora Committee told Trend News.

The Netherlands could very well be the first team to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. They only need to beat Macedonia and hope that Scotland and Iceland share the spoils in Wednesday’s other match in group 9. They will have to do it without Robin van Persie who has left the Netherlands training camp with a groin injury ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match against Macedonia.

Today, the New York Times has a front-page article on the success of Glenn Beck’s Fox News show. According to the Times, Beck has become “one of the most powerful media voices for the nation’s conservative populist anger.” Although he says he believes every word he says, he doesn’t think smart people should actually listen to him:
Mr. Beck says he believes every word he says on his TV show, and the radio show that he still hosts from 9 a.m. to noon each weekday. […]
At the same time, though, he says he is an entertainer. “I’m a rodeo clown,” he said in an interview, adding with a coy smile, “It takes great skill.” […]
He added later: “I say on the air all time, ‘if you take what I say as gospel, you’re an idiot’.”

Last month, The New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh revealed in Minnesota that former vice president Cheney presided over an “executive assassination ring.” “Under President Bush’s authority, they’ve been going into countries, not talking to the ambassador or the CIA station chief, and finding people on a list and executing them and leaving,” Hersh explained. Today, CNN interviewed Hersh and former Cheney aide John Hannah.
HERSH: I know for sure…the idea that we have a unit that goes around, without reporting to Congress… and has authority from the President to go into the country without telling the CIA station chief or the ambassador and whack somebody. … You’ve delegated authority to troops in the field to hit people on the basis of whatever intelligence they think is good.
Hannah replied that Hersh’s account of the assassination scheme “is not true.” Yet in the same breath, when asked about a “list” of assassination targets, Hannah echoed Hersh’s statements. Hannah said that “troops in the field” are given “authority” to “capture or kill certain individuals” who are perceived as a threat. “That’s certainly true,” he said:
Q: Is there a list of suspected terrorists out there who can be assassinated?
HANNAH: There’s clearly a group of people that go through a very extremely well-vetted process, interagency process…that have committed acts of war against the United States, who are at war with the United States or are suspected of planning operations of war against the United States, who authority is given to our troops in the field in certain war theaters to capture or kill those individuals. That is certainly true.

Naast mij in het ziekenhuis ligt een vrouw wier sterilisatie ongedaan gemaakt zal worden. Na haar echtscheiding is ze verliefd geworden op een man die wel een kinderwens heeft. Tegenover ons ligt een bejaarde dame onophoudelijk te snurken. Soms wordt ze wakker gemaakt om iets te eten. Dan mompelt ze wat over die rot pap en snurkt weer verder.
Twee dagen na de operatiedag komt de specialist zijn rondje doen. Mijn naaste buurvrouw vraagt hem of ze weer snel naar huis kan. Als hij weg is, schrikt ze op. Ze vergat te vragen wanneer ze weer mag ’seksen’. De lieve verpleegster holt wel even achter hem aan. “Nou”, komt ze hijgend terug, “de dokter zegt dat u het over twee weken voorzichtig mag proberen, maar…” Plotseling komt onze overbuurvrouw, langzaam, half overeind! Streng kijkt ze naar mijn buurvrouw, en zegt: “Ja! En dan niet erop en eraf en dan nog eens een keer erop en eraf!”

“Het is wetenschappelijk bewezen dat beursgoeroes die voortdurend de komst van een depressie voorspellen een moeilijke jeugd hebben gehad, dat schreef een journalist deze week”, met die woorden begon Rienk H. Kamer zijn beleggingssymposium ergens in de jaren negentig. Ik kan me dat nog goed herinneren want ik zat in de zaal en had die woorden twee dagen eerder opgeschreven in een column.
Bij deze wil ik hem overigens van harte feliciteren. Kamer had gelijk. De depressie, waar zijn beleggingsvisie sinds een jaar of twintig op is gebaseerd, is er gekomen. En laat ik gelijk Kondratiev, economische golfbeweging, ook geluk wensen. Goed gezien mannen!
Helaas heeft het de beleggers die altijd in Rienk Kamer zijn blijven geloven, wel veel geld gekost. Want ze hebben zo’n twintig jaar op die depressie moeten wachten. Maar ach, een kniesoor die daar op let. Gelijk is gelijk.
Wist u overigens dat een goede beleggingsadviseur altijd tegelijk twee bedrijfjes heeft die vanaf hetzelfde adres worden gerund? Daar voorspelt de expert onder verschillende namen op basis van dezelfde gegevens bij het ene bedrijfje hosanna en bij het andere rampspoed. Zo zit hij altijd goed.
Gezegd moet worden, dat deed Rienk Kamer niet. Die heeft altijd vastgehouden aan zijn ‘Financiële strategie’: “we gaan met z’n allen naar de kloten.” En even eerlijk over Rienk. Een grappige, erudiete en intelligente man wiens korte termijn adviezen over beleggingen vaak heel goed en lucratief zijn. ’En een oplichter’, zegt u. Ik denk het niet, maar wie ben ik.
Zelf ben ik twee weken geleden voor het eerst in bijna twee jaar weer in aandelen gegaan. In Azië. En vorige week donderdag en vrijdag er gelijk met winst weer uit. Waarom? Tja, daar vraagt u me wat.
Zoiets. Het is nu wel bekend hoe slecht het allemaal gaat. Dat lijkt voorlopig wel verwerkt in de koersen. Beleggers hebben hun verlies genomen. Toen een paar weken geleden de eerste hausse sinds een jaar begon, werd de beurs voor het eerst in lange tijd bepaald door de angst om de boot omhoog te missen. Even maar, zo blijkt nu. Want de meeste beleggers hebben, net als ik, geen flauw idee of de bodem al is bereikt.

In het Museum of the City of New York wordt het vertrek van het VOC-schip de Halve Maan herdacht dat met schipper Henry Hudson op 4 april 1609 de Amsterdamse haven verliet voor de West. De tentoonstelling bevat 275 artefacten uit die periode waaronder de romp van het schip de Halve Maan.

Deze man was acht jaar de leider van de Republikeinen. Dick Armey zei dat hij voor het eerst doodsbenauwd is voor een Amerikaanse president, want Obama begrijpt de wereld niet. Wat is de aanleiding voor zijn angst: president Obama wil gezondheidszorg voor iedereen.
Eerder toonde hij zich al erg bang voor Hillary Clinton: “Ze klinkt als Karl Marx, al haar vrienden zijn marxisten.”

And after eight years of one of the most intellectually incurious Presidents in the history of the United States you’ve got the nerve to say that President Obama doesn’t understand the world he lives in? Now you’re scared of the President? Spare me your feigned indignation.
So what has Dick Armey so terrified of President Obama now? Even the possibility of expanding Medicare. Heaven forbid we allow something to cut into the profits of those insurance companies who are lining the pockets of the politicians in Washington DC.
Petraeus: ’I don’t agree with Cheney that Obama made the country more unsafe’
Earlier this month, former vice president Cheney told CNN that president Obama is “making some choices that… raise the risk to the American people of another attack,” referring to Obama’s decisions to close Guantanamo and end torture. Today on CNN’s State of the Union, Centcom Commander Gen. David Petraeus, whom Cheney has previously called “extraordinarily capable”, said:
PETRAEUS: Well, I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. I think in fact that there is a good debate going on about the importance of values in all that we do. I think that if one violates the values that we hold so dear, that we jeopardize. … We think for the military, in particular that camp, that’s a line [torture] that can’t be crossed… It is hugely significant to us to live the values that we hold so dear and that we have fought so hard to protect over the years.”
