Nederlanders staan wereldwijd bekend om twee zaken: water en geld. Voor JdeW klopt dat ook, met slechts een kleine variatie: geld als water.
Van water hebben Nederlanders inderdaad veel verstand. Waar ook ter wereld een probleem is met water, zie je een Nederlandse bedrijf dat het moet oplossen. Het tweede - verstand van geld - blijkt echter gebaseerd op een misverstand, aldus een onderzoek van de ING-bank. Daar hebben Nederlanders weinig kaas van gegeten.
Er zit wat in. Vooral als we vaststellen wie dit onderzoek heeft gedaan.

Big Think - The foremost quality that makes wood wood, both as a material and as a metaphor, is its inflexible rigidity. Dutch designer Carolien Laro, however, has challenged this age-old conception with Spring Wood – a series of furniture made of solid wood yet with flexible seating surfaces.
The flexibility is achieved by cutting meticulously engineered mesh-like slits into the solid wood tops. Each pliable wooden seat requires requires 480 CNC-milled cuts, manufactured by Dutch woodworking studio Ritmeester, and the original concept cost Laro 600 hours of prototyping. whole story

Last month a little-known Chinese company came out of the woodwork to make Dutch cable making company Draka an offer that Draka could scarcely believe. Xinmao, a Tianjin-based investment company with a market value of €400 mln, was offering an all-cash takeover offer of €1 bn, outbidding Prysmian, an Italian cable company who had nearly sealed a deal for €833 mln in cash and shares.

Dutch Fund helps injured kittens

Geneseo, Illinois - Four kittens are on the mend thanks to medical care provided by the Dutch Memorial Fund.
Funds were used by the Henry County Humane Society’s Geneseo Chapter to pay for amputations for two cats and eye removals for two others. “The Dutch Fund made all the difference in the world for these kittens,” said humane society volunteer Cindy Avey.
A Dutch Memorial Fund was established in April after a cat, dubbed “Dutch,” was found tortured and nailed to a utility pole in rural Geneseo.

The most famous long distance skating race in the world is the Eleven Cities Race in Friesland, the Netherlands. De Elfstedentocht! It is a dangerous adventure and people are advised not to try and take part in this event over two hundred kilometers in the northern, still partly unexplored, part of the Netherlands.
Many people have lost their lives trying to finish that race.
Some died of exhaustion, some drowned when they didnt see a wak, some lost their way in the barren lands and where never seen again, some just lost the will to live after realising they were not gonna be there in time to get their Elfstedenkruisje.
This year the chance that it will be held looks pretty good. It’s freezing out there. Having skated just 80 kilometers long distance myself once, JdeW once more urges everyone to stay away as far as possible from Friesland and the Elfstedentocht.

How difficult is it?
That depends a lot on the weather conditions. In 1909, the winner Minne Hoekstra took almost 14 hours to cover the distance, in 1997 Henk Angenent just took seven hours. Experts say 1963 was the most difficult race. It was minus 18 degrees Celsius. Only 69 skaters out of 10,000 made it to the finish: the worst ever result in the history of the race. The title of a recent film on the Tour that year says it all, it is called ‘The hell of `63’

Wat is hier gebeurd? Een raar verhaal. Volgens het IPPMedia in Tanzania is het Nederlandse bedrijf Bioshape Tanzania, dat biodiesel zou gaan produceren van jatropha in Tanzania, er mee opgehouden. Zonder duidelijke opgave van reden. Het personeel zou al een jaar lang niet zijn uitbetaald en heeft daarom de tractoren in beslag genomen.
Was het de droogte?
Het bedrijf zou van Cor Vaes en Wil Hermans zijn. Hoewel het Nederlandse moederbedrijf in surseance van betaling is, zegt Vaes in een ander artikel dat het bedrijf in Tanzania op het punt staat verder te gaan.
Opvallend is dat ook vakgroep Energy Science van de Universiteit Utrecht er bij betrokken is. Twee studenten doen onderzoek naar het succes van de teelt van jatropha voor biodiesel in Tanzania - ’Socio economic impacts of Jatropha production in Tanzania’.

Master Thesis - Scenario analysis will be carried out in which the future impacts will be evaluated. Land ownership and land use is particularly relevant for the socio-economic performance of Jatropha production in the Tanzanian context, but also for the environmental performance (GHG balance and biodiversity impacts). Also the use of water, if applicable, should be investigated, as this is often a crucial limiting factor in Tanzania.

Hundred jobless as Dutch firm suspends jatropha production

IPPMedia - A Dutch company, Bioshape Tanzania, which cultivates jatropha for biofuel here, has suspended production, rendering more than 100 people jobless.

Dutch environmentally friendly ferry design

Motorship - Damen Shipyards has announced that it has been tasked with developing a new environmentally friendly ferry design for the Dutch shipping company Rederij Doeksen, which operates passenger and car ferries between Harlingen and the Dutch Wadden islands.
Damen says that this will be the first time it has specifically designed a ferry aiming at a sustainable solution, and this is the first ferry of this type for Doeksen. The vessel will be powered by LNG, a hybrid system using wind/solar energy and other alternative solutions, although the use of an environmentally-friendly diesel system is not being ruled out if this looks a better option. Schrijver Arnon Grunberg was op bezoek bij de Nederlandse militairen in Afghanistan. Hij mocht zelfs meerijden op de Patria, een pantservoertuig met kanon en al.
Zonder duidelijke aanleiding lostte dat kanon plots een schot.
Grunberg dook weg, maar de majoor stelde hem gerust dat het slechts om een waarschuwingsschot ging. Afgevuurd omdat iemand wat te dichtbij kwam. De majoor vertelde dat in Afghanistan niemand zich drukmaakt om zo iets.
“Hier is een kanonsschot wat bij ons thuis claxonneren is.”

This week the Washington Post - once a very good newspaper - announced a new blog written by conservative religious activist Jordan Sekulow.
Sekulow is a man who claims that the United States is not only a Christian nation but that “America has a special relationship with God.” Sekulow is a fierce proponent of the Oklahoma’s ban on sharia law. “The threat of Sharia law is real and the people of Oklahoma are ahead of the curve.”
But what some progressive Americans are most worried about is that he pals around with the likes of Dutchman Geert Wilders.

New Washington Post blogger shared stage with Dutch far-right Anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders

On September 11, 2010, Sekulow spoke at a Manhattan rally protesting the Park 51 Islamic Cultural Center (which, like event organizer Pamela Geller, he refers to as a “shrine to terror“) alongside far-right Dutch anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders.
In an article on conservatives’ embrace of Islamophobia, journalist Michelle Goldberg wrote, “A new type of religious bigotry has entered American politics, one more blatant than anything we’ve seen since the Twin Towers fell.” By giving Sekulow a platform, the Washington Post is legitimizing that bigotry.

Wij zijn deze week in Singapore op bezoek.
We verwachtten niet dat er hier aan Sinterklaas gedaan zou worden, en waren dus blij verrast ‘s ochtends iets in onze schoenen aan te treffen. Weliswaar geen chocoladeletter, maar een leuk pakje thee.
Jammer genoeg was het niet te zuipen.

Benjamin Moser, 34, is an American writer and biographer who lives in the Dutch city of Utrecht with his partner Arthur Japin, a Dutch novelist, and publisher Lex Jansen. They live in a narrow, five-storey townhouse which has a 19th-century facade but inside hides a structure that dates back to the beginning of the 17th century.

Utrecht has a population of 300,000 and is the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands. But, although it has grown considerably since the second world war, the medieval structure of the city centre, with its canals and graceful townhouses, has been largely preserved. It’s a nice balance between old and new: two minutes walk from Utrecht’s town hall and gothic St Martin’s Cathedral, Moser, Japin and Jansen also have a wealth of specialised food and one-off designer stores and bookshops on their doorstep.

Een vriend van JdeW was geoloog aan de Universiteit Groningen, een veilige baan. Een stuk veiliger dan de baan die hij daarvoor had. Daarin moest hij voor een groot bedrijf beslissen waar wel of niet naar olie geboord kon worden.
Nadat het een keer fout ging, kreeg hij de standaard waarschuwing: ‘Bij de volgende droge put vlieg je er uit’. Vanaf dat moment was zijn standaard antwoord als, na uitvoerig geologisch onderzoek, de knoop moest worden doorgehakt:
“Boren?”
“Niet boren!”
Hij heeft het nog twee jaar volgehouden.

Royal Dutch Shell: the well is dry, no further comments

Bloomberg - Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe’s biggest oil company, drilled a dry well at the Dalsnuten prospect in the Norwegian Sea, delivering a further blow to its Gro discovery. Shell drilled a wildcat well at Dalsnuten, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the Gro gas discovery, with the objective of finding gas in the Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said in an e-mailed statement today. The agency reported in August that an appraisal well drilled at Gro indicated the find could be at the lower end of the 10 billion to 100 billion cubic meters of gas estimates.
Shell spokesman David Williams confirmed that the well was dry and declined to comment further.

Prins Bernhard was betrokken bij wapenhandel in Indonesië, aldus historicus Gerard Aalders van het Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie in zijn boek Bernhard Zakenprins.
Aalders zegt uit indirecte bewijzen (’voor 98 procent rond’) te kunnen afleiden dat de prins zich met de wapenhandel bemoeide. ”De beruchte Afghaanse handelaar Ali Shah is bij de prins op Soestdijk geweest om te praten over zaken.” Bernhard zou ook betrokken zijn geweest bij leveranties van machinepistolen aan Evita Peron.
Bernhard had volgens Aalders veel foute vrienden en deed alles voor geld. “Als Bernhard een brug moest openen, vroeg hij daar 100.000 gulden voor. Terwijl lintjes doorknippen eigenlijk de core business is van de koninklijke familie.”
Bernhard werd vanwege zijn rare capriolen in de gaten gehouden door buitenlandse inlichtingendiensten. Voor MI5 deed James Bond-auteur Ian Fleming het.
Vanwege zijn seksuele escapades, onechte kinderen en louche zakelijke contacten was de prins, en de Koninklijke familie (Quote 500 nr. 25 - €900 miljoen) en de Nederlandse regering chantabel. Dat Bernhard zoveel geld nodig had dat hij zich zelfs voor lintjes doorknippen vorstelijk liet belonen, is wellicht ook omdat hij werd afgeperst, schrijft Aalders.

De wereld raakt maar niet uitgeschreven over de plannen van Nederland om de verkoop van hasj, cannabis, marihuana, pot en wiet aan buitenlanders te verbieden.

It’s the latest advertising campaign from a menswear store called Suit Supply. It shows a series of ‘shocking’ - to the Brits - images including a woman touching her naked breast next to a man (in a suit) and one of the same woman in a fur coat and pearls and not much else being kissed by a man (in a suit).
Hurry, you have to be fast to see them because today the shopping centre told Suit Supply to remove the eight-foot-high lit-up images. You know: British and nakedness and all of that.
The shopping centre is apologising for any offence caused.

In dit prima verhaal in Slate beschrijft Jessica Olien hoe het is om als ambitieuze Amerikaanse vrouw terecht te komen in Nederland. ‘Nederlandse vrouwen zijn niet als mij’. Jessica is nu drie maanden in Nederland en gezegd moet worden, ze voelt de constante druk om te presteren verminderen. Ze begint te wennen aan het idee dat iedereen beter af zou zijn als ze zouden ‘relax and go Dutch’.
Wist u dat er een heel VN-onderzoek is gewijd aan waarom zo weinig Nederlandse vrouwen fulltime werken. Onderzocht werd of Nederland wel voldeed aan het VN-Verdrag betreffende Vrouwenrechten? Na uitvoerig onderzoek bleek dat Nederlandse vrouwen niet langer willen werken dan ze nu doen. Korter was wel okee.

Nederlanders staan per werkdag gemiddeld veertien minuten in de file, dus zeven minuten heen en zeven minuten terug. En daar is niets aan te doen. De enige structurele oplossing van het fileprobleem is dat Nederlanders gewoon stoppen met werken.
De Nederlandse Randstad, Utrecht en Arnhem horen tot de meest verstopte gebieden van Europa. Alleen met Brussel is het nog erger gesteld.
Automobilisten staan in Nederland per jaar 65 uur in de file. Het slechtste tijdstip om de snelweg op te gaan is donderdagochtend tussen 8 en 9 uur. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Inrix, een bedrijf dat systemen voor verkeersinformatie levert.

Dutch city Utrecht wastes most time in traffic

Euronews - US traffic company INRIX found that in Europe Monday rush hour in Brussels is the worst place to be. But it said the Dutch city of Utrecht clocks in at 75 wasted traffic hours per year, followed closely by Manchester, then Paris and Dutch bottleneck Arnhem. Europe’s ‘capital’, Brussels, adds 65 hours’ per year of crawling time to the daily commute, versus London’s 54 or Berlin’s 35.

Dit weekeinde werd Ut Groen Geile Broekie gelanceerd. Voor niet-Hagenezen: een spin-off van de Haagse spellingsgids Ut Groen-Geile Boekie.
Het eerste exemplaar werd op een rondvaart door de Haagse grachten uitgereikt door Marnix Rueb (tekenaar van Haagse Harry), aangetrokken door Jack (Mondriaan College) en doorgeknipt door de Haagse nachtburgemeester René Bom.
