Mede dankzij de tomeloze inzet van Charlton Heston. Als JdeW een film ziet waarin deze filmheld speelt schakelt hij subiet over naar een ander kanaal.
In Indianapolis heeft een jongetje van vier een kogel door het hoofd van zijn driejarige speelkameraadje geschoten. De dader pakte een geladen pistool van de keukentafel en schoot het meisje neer. Ze overleed in het ziekenhuis. Het ongeluk vond plaats in het huis van het meisje. De moeder stond te douchen tijdens het incident waarvan haar twee andere kinderen getuige waren. Ze is aangehouden voor verwaarlozing van haar kinderen. De dader en zijn vader meldden zich nog wel in het ziekenhuis, maar namen de benen voordat de politie hen kon inrekenen.

Until a few days ago, I was writer-in-residence in Amsterdam for the Dutch Foundation of Literature and gorging on the incredible feast of Dutch non-fiction about the contemporary world. And yes, I mean world: There is something about the way the Dutch approach current politics that is daring, thoughtful, open-minded and critical, yet completely non-judgmental.
Maybe another way of putting that is that Dutch non-fiction writers are tough-minded but not cynical, and their work has been knocking my socks off. You feel they are opening the world to you as it is, not as you want it to be, and their insights are both shocking and life-giving. Even rust voor Geert Wilders? Er is een nieuw doelwit voor radicale moslims. Te weten de Dove World Church. Deze Amerikaanse kerk roept de wereld op om op 11 september van dit jaar de koran te verbranden. De ideeen van deze radicale christenen werden overigens via CNN verspreid.

On September 11, 2010, the extremist evangelical Dove World Church — whose pastor, Terry Jones, has written a book called “Islam Is Of The Devil” — plans to host “International Burn A Quran Day,” when it will burn Muslims’ sacred text and encourage others across the world to do so as well. Churchmember Wayne Sapp has even posted an instructional video that explains how and why to burn the Islamic text.
CNN host Rick Sanchez invited Jones on his show yesterday to ask him about the inflammatory action. When Sanchez pressed Jones about why he would try to anger the world’s Muslims by burning their sacred text, the evangelical pastor replied, “Well, for one thing, to us, the book is not sacred,” provoking laughter from the CNN host. The Republican Party is more divided on national security than it has been in decades. One side advocates a more pragmatic approach to U.S. foreign policy and the other engages in, as Brian Katulis notes in Politico: “blustery, pugnacious nationalism that either clobbers other countries in efforts to remake them or walls them off from America.”
Yesterday at AEI, the blustery and pugnacious nationalistic side was on full display. President Obama is in Motor City today to focus attention on what he feels is an untold success story: the improving fortunes of American automakers thanks to the administration’s decision to use TARP funds to bailout General Motors and Chrysler. Since the administration took action, the auto industry has added 55,000 jobs — the best growth since 1999 — and the administration says 1.1 million jobs have been saved in the economy at large. Ramirezi: Zoon Tom en ik komen aan bij de sloot rondom het kerkhof. We gaan zitten bij een andere liefhebber en zijn twee dochters. Tom kijkt even slinks naar het fototoestel van de man en constateert tevreden dat zijn eigen toestel een net iets grotere lens heeft. Die van mij telt sowieso niet mee. Maar lang kan hij er niet van genieten, want daar komt een man aan met een nog grotere toeter op zijn toestel. Gevolgd door iemand die voor zijn telelens bijna een kruiwagen nodig heeft.
Even later stopt er een auto achter ons. Luidkeels wil de bestuurder weten waar “al die freaks naar zitten te turen”. (more…)

Ik ben al een tiental jaren rechter en stel na het voorlezen van de aanklacht altijd de volgende belangrijke vraag aan de verdachte. ‘Hoe pleit u: schuldig of onschuldig?’

At its state convention in Des Moines last month, the Iowa GOP adopted a new party platform that includes the repeal of mandatory minimum wage laws, the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education, and even clarification on the definition of manure.
