De verkopen van Saab auto’s blijven stijgen. In het laatste kwartaal werd een derde (11.448 auto’s) verkocht van alle auto’s die Saab in het afgelopen jaar verkocht.

Saab is continuing its efforts to boost sales The number of Saab cars sold in the last three months of 2010 was more than double a year earlier, the carmaker’s Dutch owner Spyker has said.
A total of 11,448 Saab cars were sold worldwide between October and December, up 129% from the same period in 2009, and 31% higher than July-September.
For 2010 as a whole, 31,696 Saab cars were sold globally.

Om de kracht van dit principe te illustreren, ontwikkelde onderzoeker Miguel Bruns Alonso op de TU Delft een pen die stress bij de gebruiker meet en attent maakt op teveel stress. De gebruiker mag dan die dag het werk voor gezien houden.

The MedGuru - Miguel Bruns Alonso, an Industrial Design PhD student from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has created an innovative handheld device which he claims is a discreet and effective solution for preventing stress, anywhere, anytime.
Bruns has conceived a pen that can not only spot short-term stress in the person using it, but also has the potential to lower some of the anxieties he is feeling.

Last month a little-known Chinese company came out of the woodwork to make Dutch cable making company Draka an offer that Draka could scarcely believe. Xinmao, a Tianjin-based investment company with a market value of €400 mln, was offering an all-cash takeover offer of €1 bn, outbidding Prysmian, an Italian cable company who had nearly sealed a deal for €833 mln in cash and shares.

Het is een auto die de eerste 80 km geheel op electricteit kan rijden, waarvan een deel vanwege het zonnepaneel in het dak helemaal gratis.
Hoeveel meter zou dat zijn?
Voor de rest van het 480 km bereik wordt benzine omgezet in electricteit.

Door de plaatsing van de sleutel tussen de voorstoelen - wat Saab al meer dan 52 jaar doet - is het mogelijk te veel druk op de sleutel te zetten, waardoor verbuiging kan optreden.
Op zich niet zo’n ramp. Maar als het gaat vriezen en de berijder vergeet het deurslot in te spuiten met de-icer bestaat de kans, bij lompe aanpak, dat de sleutel afbreekt. In elke Saab zit onder de kofferruimte rechtsachter een klein vakje met cijfercode waar zich een ontgrendelmechanisme bevindt wat alle sloten vrijmaakt.
Verder gaan de electrische sloten, bij de latere modellen v.a. 1977, vanzelf open bij een accident.
Doordat Saab gemiddeld meer dan 28 jaar meegaat is een derde of vierde, mischien wel achtste eigenaar heel gewoon, en die weten dat niet meer…
Damen Scheepswerf gaat een groene veerboot ontwerpen die wind- en zonne-energie, maar mogelijk ook een dieselmotor (milieuvriendelijk dat wel), gaat gebruiken om mensen te vervoeren van Harlingen naar de Waddeneilanden.

Motorship - Damen Shipyards has announced that it has been tasked with developing a new environmentally friendly ferry design for the Dutch shipping company Rederij Doeksen, which operates passenger and car ferries between Harlingen and the Dutch Wadden islands.
Damen says that this will be the first time it has specifically designed a ferry aiming at a sustainable solution, and this is the first ferry of this type for Doeksen. The vessel will be powered by LNG, a hybrid system using wind/solar energy and other alternative solutions, although the use of an environmentally-friendly diesel system is not being ruled out if this looks a better option. Nu de grote autofabrikanten zich echt met de productie van een electrische auto gaan bemoeien, gaat het vast snel. Deze nieuwe geheel electrische Nissan Leaf kost in Amerika door subsidie van de Obama-regering maar 20.000 dollar (15.000 euro). JdeW gaat hem proberen.
The fully electric, low priced Nissan Leaf went on sale yesterday. Olivier Chalouhi of Redwood City in Silicon Valley was the first buyer. The vehicle was priced at $33,500, but dropped to $20,000 after federal and state rebates. The Leaves, if you will, currently on sale now are made in Nissan’s factory in Oppama, Japan. Thanks to the Obama Administration and a $1.4 billion Energy Department loan, in 2012 the Leaf will be made at Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. 1300 jobs are expected.
U weet het misschien nog. Er stond al twee keer eerder iets over op drasties. Bladeren drogen uit en sterven af als ze maanden in de buurt van wifi-routers staan die signalen voor draadloos internet uitzenden. Nu besteedt in de Wall Street Journal er weer aandacht aan. Wetenschappers van Wageningen Universiteit plaatsten essen in een ruimte met zes draadloze routers. Ze deden het al snel een stuk minder goed dan bomen in een ruimte zonder draadloos internet. Maar meer onderzoek is nodig, aldus wetenschapper Dr. Andre van Lammeren.In dit stuk komt ook Niek van ‘t Wout (verantwoordelijk voor de openbare ruimte in Alphen aan den Rijn) aan het woord die als eerste zieke bomen in Alphen aan den Rijn onderzocht en het onderzoek van de Universiteit Wageningen initieerde.
Voorlopige conclusie: er kunnen geen conclusies worden getrokken. Behalve wellicht dat er door de essen in de ruimte met wifi een stuk meer wordt gelachen!
Dutch reports on Wi-Fi and sick trees off the mark
Wall Street Journal - There were really two separate reports. One was conducted by the Dutch municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, of some troubling abnormalities in the city’s trees. The other, funded by the town, was a laboratory experiment pitting some trees exposed to Wi-Fi signals to others that weren’t. This study found some damage to the Wi-Fi-exposed trees, though the nature of that damage was different than the damage seen in the city’s trees.
Niek van ‘t Wout, who heads Alphen aan den Rijn’s green space, is the driving force behind these studies. His town examined 600 trees and found 70% had abnormalities — which led to articles world-wide claiming that 70% of urban trees are sick. Commercial enterprise Space Exploration Technologies has flawlessly put a rocket into orbit around the Earth with a full sized capsule capable of carrying six astronauts.
So SpaceX now has an operational system capable of putting payload like satellites and eventually people (in maybe two years) into space that costs much less than the shuttle or the big Russian boosters.
What kind of savings does that mean?
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk: “A seat on the Dragon Spacecraft launched by the Falcon 9 rocket would cost less than $20 million, and it is 100% manufactured and launched in the United States. This means over a 1000 new high quality jobs while saving taxpayers $2 billion a year.” Asked about more ambitious journeys, Musk added, “After we master delivering payload and passengers to the ISS, we certainly have other destinations in mind …”
Many in the American establishment really don’t understand the internet that well. In fact many American lawmakers hardly use it. The American government, together with China and the Middle East, is trying to suppress WikiLeaks in a useless whack-a-mole effort to keep control over information on the internet. A warning is in place.
Because the internet goes two ways.
Indeed, people using the internet to spread information should be careful. The govenment is on to you. On the other hand, the government should be very careful too. Because you really don’t want to get those hackers mad. They’re able to take down the entiregovernment.
Arresting or killing Assange could spawn the rise of a vast, permanent network of radicalized hackers systematically challenging those in power.
Crooks and Liars - This WikiLeaks whack-a-mole is a reminder of DJ Alan Freed yelling, “You can stop me, but you’re never gonna stop rock and roll!”
The grownups then didn’t understand the power of rock, and the political Beltway class does not understand the power of the internets now.

Deze stroomkast in de Martenstraat in Groningen is opgeleukt met: een paard en veulen met rode tranen, een rode poes met een groene traan, gestencilde tulpen, een stoffer zonder blik, een fietspomp, twee oranje blikjes ter ere van Alex & Maxima en een lila gitaartje.
Volgens Harry Perton moet dit ensemble het werk zijn van tienermeisjes.

Een vriend van JdeW was geoloog aan de Universiteit Groningen, een veilige baan. Een stuk veiliger dan de baan die hij daarvoor had. Daarin moest hij voor een groot bedrijf beslissen waar wel of niet naar olie geboord kon worden.
Nadat het een keer fout ging, kreeg hij de standaard waarschuwing: ‘Bij de volgende droge put vlieg je er uit’. Vanaf dat moment was zijn standaard antwoord als, na uitvoerig geologisch onderzoek, de knoop moest worden doorgehakt:
“Boren?”
“Niet boren!”
Hij heeft het nog twee jaar volgehouden.
Royal Dutch Shell: the well is dry, no further comments
Bloomberg - Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe’s biggest oil company, drilled a dry well at the Dalsnuten prospect in the Norwegian Sea, delivering a further blow to its Gro discovery. Shell drilled a wildcat well at Dalsnuten, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the Gro gas discovery, with the objective of finding gas in the Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said in an e-mailed statement today. The agency reported in August that an appraisal well drilled at Gro indicated the find could be at the lower end of the 10 billion to 100 billion cubic meters of gas estimates.
Shell spokesman David Williams confirmed that the well was dry and declined to comment further.

China is the surprise worldleader in clean energy efforts. China is already the world’s largest manufacturer of wind turbines and solar panels. And right now China is preparing to roll out electric cars, lithium ion batteries and cellulosic ethanol. This is where the future of energy is. The world has a finite resource in oil, just like we had a finite resource in whale oil. In the past we have made the transition. China understands that and China’s investment in clean energy is about double that of the United States.
“The Chinese leadership have made a strategic decision that they missed out on the last two industrial revolutions and they don’t want to miss out on the third one,” said Erwin Jackson, director of the Climate Institute, of China’s “surprising” dominance.
“They are now commanding the largest market share of clean energy investment at a global level as a result,” Jackson told AFP.
China’s investment in clean energy topped 35 billion US dollars in 2009 compared with 11 billion in Britain and 18 billion in the United States, and Jackson said it was set to increase tenfold over the next decade.
“The race toward a clean-energy future is underway, and those nations that lead will reap enormous economic benefits,” CAP’s Kate Gordon noted in a report on clean energy this year, adding that “[b]y 2020, clean energy will be one of the world’s biggest industries, totaling as much as $2.3 trillion” and that China “has made a serious commitment to building that revolution with low-carbon, low-waste technologies and infrastructure.”

Rightwinger Rush Limbaugh is leading the charge against the breakthrough electrical car Chevy Volt. Newly elected Republican governors are killing high-speed rail. Glenn Beck is cooking up conspiracy theories on Fox News about smart grid technology. Republican senator Alexander is trying to kill the wind industry. Shortly: the entire right-wing movement is trying to convince Americans green jobs are going to destroy the U.S. economy.
All this effort by conservative patriots is of course heavily financed by Big Oil and Big Coal.
Now the rightwing of the Republican Party is in a fight over the chairmanship of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Do they want the moderate Fred Upton who believes it’s good to reduce carbon emissions and to be more independent of oil or do they want Joe Barton who apologised to BP for the harsh treatment (pay for polluting the Gulf of Mexico) by the U.S. government. Ik weet niet wat er bogus is aan het artikel op drasties gisteren (Wat als draadloos internet slecht is voor bomen en planten?) dat planten niet goed groeien in de buurt van wifi-routers die signalen voor draadloos internet uitzenden.
Wat wel bogus is, is de volgende verwijzing in onderstaand artikel op het blog Tech Talk.
Die link verwijst namelijk nergens naar. Anywhay.
In onderstaand artikel wordt geclaimd dat er een gerucht wordt verspreid op het internet dat planten niet goed worden van draadloos internet. Ik zou foto’s van een onderzoek van de Universiteit Wageningen geen gerucht willen noemen.
Het wordt een outlandish (= vreemde, eigenaardige) claim genoemd.
Aangezien in onderstaand artikel zelf wordt vermeld dat er zestig onderzoeken zijn gedaan naar mogelijke effecten van straling op planten waarvan sommige effecten waarnemen, begrijpt JdeW niet wat vreemd aan de claim is. Juist of niet juist maar vreemd… nee.
Een ding is zeker. Het Antenne Bureau van de Nederlandse overheid heeft de claims niet als bogus (= vals) afgedaan zoals in onderstaand artikel wordt geclaimd.
Dit zegt het Antennebureau erover:
De onderzoeker van de Universiteit Wageningen geeft aan dat het gaat om eerste resultaten en dat die nog niet bevestigd zijn in een herhalingsonderzoek. Hij waarschuwt nadrukkelijk dat er nu nog geen vergaande conclusies te trekken zijn uit zijn resultaten. Op basis van de nu beschikbare informatie kan niet geconcludeerd worden dat de WIFI zendsignalen tot schade leidt bij bomen of andere planten. Daarbij is rekening gehouden met eerder gepubliceerd onderzoeken die geen effect laten zien. Het Kennisplatform wacht met belangstelling de publicatie van het onderzoek af.
Tech Talk - It’s an Internet rumor that is spreading, appropriately enough, like wildfire: Wi-Fi signals can make trees and other plants sick, causing cracks in their bark and killing off portions of their leaves.
The outlandish claim, supposedly based on a Dutch study, cropped up late last week and has since been repeated in countless blog posts. In response, the Dutch government’s Antenna Agency, which provides information on the health effects of electromagnetic fields, has issued a statement urging caution on the unpublished, unverified and otherwise very preliminary findings. There’s a rumor going round that Fox News boss Rupert Murdoch and Apple boss Steve Jobs are planning to create a digial newspaper called ‘The Daily’ with 24/7 content.
So Jobs is willing to make a deal with Murdoch? The man who fucked up news reporting and destroyed honest journalism. Please tell us it’s not so, otherwise I will have to go out and buy me some Android devices.
Rumors are circling that News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch is teaming up with Apple CEO Steve Jobs to launch a new digital-only newspaper. Dubbed, “The Daily,” the iPad project will allegedly stream right a user’s device seven days a week for the fairly low price of $0.99 per week, or roughly $4.25 monthly.
“Several sources said Apple chief Steve Jobs and Murdoch have been in conversations about the project for a while,” writes Women’s Wear Daily’s John Koblin. “When the project is announced, don’t be surprised if you see Steve Jobs onstage with Rupert Murdoch, welcoming The Daily to the app world.” [read on] (more…)

Wetenschappers van Wageningen Universiteit plaatsten essen in een ruimte met zes draadloze routers. Ze deden het al snel een stuk minder goed dan bomen in een ruimte zonder draadloos internet. Wel moet gezegd worden dat er door de essen in de ruimte met wifi een stuk meer werd gelachen!
Aanleiding voor het onderzoek was een ontdekking van ambtenaren van de gemeente Alphen aan den Rijn dat bomen in hun gemeente onverklaarbare gezwellen hadden. Dit onderzoek bewijst niet definitief dat de straling de oorzaak is voor de gezwellen, maar het toont wel aan dat die mogelijkheid bestaat. Meer onderzoek is nodig.
