Politico reporter Mike Allen, formerly of The Washington Post and Time, appeared yesterday on the show of right-wing radio host Mike Gallagher. The two of them guffawed together about Scott McCellan’s claims that the media was “deferential” to the Bush administration and then Allen said this:
ALLEN: And indeed, Scott does adopt the vocabulary, rhetoric of the left-wing haters. Can you believe it in here he says the White House press corps was too deferential to the administration?
Think Progress has the audio, which makes even clearer how eager Mike Allen was “to adopt the vocabulary, rhetoric” of the right-wing operatives which Politico exists to serve. Actually, not even Karl Rove goes so far as to refer to those critical of the media’s war coverage as “left wing haters.” But Politico “reporter” Mike Allen does.

Yesterday, CNN’s Michael Ware dismissed Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) recent assertion that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) travel to Iraq in order to get a better sense of the war. Ware said that U.S. officials’ trips to Iraq are usually “divorced from reality” adding that its “impossible” to “get much of a real picture.” Ware then noted that McCain’s own trips to Iraq have not helped him get a sense of the realities in Iraq:
WARE: I’ll issue a word of caution, too. I mean Senator McCain has been here, what, more than half a dozen times. And we’ve seen him get assessments of Iraq terribly wrong. So I wouldn’t be hanging my hat on the fact that your opponent has only been here once.
While McCain said that he’d “be glad to go” with Obama to Iraq, a Washington Post reporter noted yesterday that there is “no way” the Secret Service would agree to McCain’s plan.

Conservatives Try To Quash Interest In McClellan Book: ‘I’m Bored’, ‘More Concerned About American Idol’
The right wing is trotting out a variety of counter-attacks to deal with the explosive allegations found in former White House press secretary Scott McClellan’s new book. Yesterday, defenders repeated they were “puzzled” by the book, “as if,” the New York Times noted, “Mr. McClellan had undergone some kind of emotional breakdown.” By afternoon, attacks were more charged, with White House officials calling McClellan a “traitor” and “Benedict.” By last night and into this morning, Fox News pundits were insisting the book is the work of a nefarious, left-wing publisher.
Now several prominent conservatives are dismissing the book by insisting that no one outside of “people who follow Washington issues” really even cares about McClellan’s allegations:
Ari Fleischer: This is a very Washington and people who follow Washington issue, and people tend to read these types of books. What is interesting, Bill, is TV shows, for example, millions watch the news at night, a great selling book only sells about 100,000, so it’s kinda gonna be a self-contained story. Bill O’Reilly: McClellan says Mr. Bush did not handle Katrina very well. Gee, I’m stunned. He says the president used propaganda to justify Iraq. Again, is that a bulletin?… McClellan also believes that Karl Rove and Scooter Libby conspired in the Valerie Plame case. Forgive me if I’m bored. Newt Gingrich: No. I don’t want to shock you, Alan, but I actually don’t care… I mean my lack of interest in Scott McClellan’s personal odyssey of self-discovery is a negative. I’m more concerned about American Idol than I am about Scott McClellan. Mary Matalin: I don’t care, like Newt, I don’t really care to analyze this kind of betrayal.

Voor een simpele bureaulamp ging ik, uit gewoonte, naar ‘Het Wonder van Zutphen’ in de Beukerstraat. Maar het pand stond leeg, winkel opgeheven en het regende.
Ik dacht aan het meisje achter de toonbank, zo’n dertig jaar geleden, toen ik hier voor het eerst een gloeilamp kocht. Onschuld omstraalde haar gestalte terwijl ze zwijgend de lamp inpakte, haar wangen fris als morgendauw. En ik, nog jong, die niet kon nalaten haar te vragen:

In gedachten naar de Hema lopend zag ik weer hoe zij onhandig frunnikte met het papier. Tot ze blozend opkeek en zei:
“Nee meneer. Ik kom uit Voorst.”
De voormalige woordvoerder van het Witte Huis verwijt de ‘zogenaamd liberale’ media in de VS dat ze ten tijde van de belangrijkste politieke beslissing van de laatste acht jaar - het besluit Irak aan te vallen en te bezetten - als makke schapen de door de Bush-regering geproduceerde propaganda slikten. Inderdaad blaatte vrijwel iedereen mee met de neoconservatieve oorlogshitsers, dat het noodzakelijk was om ‘aan te vallen voordat we zelf aangevallen zullen worden’. Ook al vormde Irak, het toen meest Westers georienteerde en minst Islamitische land in het Midden Oosten, geen enkele bedreiging voor Amerika.

In a minimally rational world, this extraordinary passage, from the new book by Scott McClellan, would forever slay the single most ludicrous myth in our political culture: The “Liberal Media”:
If anything, the national press corps was probably too deferential to the White House and to the administration in regard to the most important decision facing the nation during my years in Washington, the choice over whether to go to war in Iraq.
The collapse of the administration’s rationales for war, which became apparent months after our invasion, should never have come as such a surprise. . . . In this case, the “liberal media” didn’t live up to its reputation. If it had, the country would have been better served.
Just consider how remarkable that is. George Bush’s own Press Secretary criticizes the American media for being “too deferential” to the Government. Vichai Chokevivat strongly supported Thailand’s violation of drug companies’ patents over the past two years. Mr. Vichai argued that Bangkok was acting according to domestic and international law when it allowed the government to manufacture HIV/AIDS and cancer drugs using formulas patented by Sanofi-Aventis, Abbott Laboratories and other companies.

De Nederlandse politie blijkt dagelijks bijna 1700 telefoons af te tappen. In totaal werden vorig jaar 12.491 mobiele en vaste telefoons afgeluisterd. Eerder weigerde justitie om gegevens over het tapgedrag openbaar te maken. Minister van Justitie Hirsch Ballin wil niet zeggen wat de taps hebben opgeleverd aan arrestaties en veroordelingen.

Earlier this week it was decided by the Vital Fulham staff that, to alleviate boredom and a lack of domestic football this summer, we’d focus on the forthcoming European Championships.
In a highly dubious decision, it was agreed that we will support Holland this summer. As an introduction, we thought we’d simply look at the group Holland find themselves in this summer. Unfortunately, Holland, guided by Marco Van Basten, find themselves competing in Group C, a group that has been labelled as The Group of Death!
It contains three other countries, two of which contested the last World Cup Final, in France and Italy as well as a very competitive Romania. Upon hearing the draw Marco Van Basten simply remarked: “It will be fun.”

But the wonderment was short-lived as soon the news caught the curiosity of Patna-based teenager, Nawal Kishore Kumar. Surfing the Dutch government’s website, he found to his utter shock that no such stamp had been issued to “honour” Tiwari.
Kumar then wrote an email to the Netherlands government’s public information officer, H ter Laak, to lift the cloud of controversy. Laak replied to Kumar in which he writes, “Thank you for the email. No postage stamp on the actor has been issued.”
