Het wordt er allemaal niet beter op voor Tanja Nijmeijer. Met zeventien andere strijders van de Colombiaanse rebellenbeweging FARC is ze in de VS aangeklaagd op verdenking van de gijzeling van drie Amerikanen in Colombia. De maximale straf is zestig jaar.
De Amerikanen Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell en Thomas Howes werden in 2003 gevangengenomen door de FARC, nadat hun vliegtuig een noodlanding moest maken. De mannen maakten een patrouillevlucht in de strijd tegen drugsteelt. Twee collega’s werden direct geëxecuteerd. De drie gevangenen werden in 2008 door het Colombiaanse leger bevrijd.

Tanja Nijmeijer joined the left-wing guerrilla group shortly after her arrival in Colombia, and is believed to be still at large. The court accuses her of hostage-taking and “conspiracy to provide support to terrorists”. The federal grand jury says she was part of a group of Farc rebels who kidnapped three American contractors.

Voor de beste carchases moet je naar Amerika, dat weet iedereen. Een geweldige achtervolging vindt tegenwoordig plaats in Fort Worth. Daar worden stadsbussen dagelijks achtervolgd door een truck.
De bussen zijn atheistisch, het truckje is van God.
Op de bussen staat: ‘Millions of people are - Good without God’.
Op het truckje: ‘I still love you - God’.
Het is de climax in de keiharde ‘War on Christmas’ die in Amerika wordt uitgevochten. De oorlog die er feitelijk omgaat of ‘Gelukkig Kerstfeest’ zal worden vervangen door ‘Prettige Feestdagen’.
Eerlijk gezegd valt me de reactie van de gelovigen wat tegen. Wil je de atheisten echt een klap toebrengen dan moet je ze harder aanpakken.
Je huurt een bus, je zegent de bus, je zet er een groot verlicht kruis op, liefst met Jezus er nog aan. En met deze bus volg je de stadsbus en je biedt aan iedere busreiziger in Fort Worth gratis en voor niks te vervoeren. Moet je zien hoeveel mensen er dan in God geloven.

NYTimes - A public bus rolls by with an atheist message on its side: “Millions of people are good without God.” Seconds later, a van follows bearing a riposte: “I still love you. — God,” with another line that says, “2.1 billion Christians are good with God.”
A clash of beliefs has rattled this city ever since atheists bought ad space on four city buses to reach out to nonbelievers who might feel isolated during the Christmas season … Some ministers organized a boycott of the buses, with limited success. Other clergy members are pressing the Fort Worth Transportation Authority to ban all religious advertising on public buses. And a group of local businessmen paid for the van with the Christian message to follow the atheist-messaged buses around town.

Until Fort Worth, the biggest Christmas conflict was in the New York area, where a billboard war erupted after American Atheists paid more than $20,000 for a sign that showed a picture of a Nativity scene and the message: “You know it’s a myth. This Season, Celebrate Reason!” The Catholic League then erected one on the other side of the Lincoln Tunnel that retorts: “You Know It’s Real. This Season, Celebrate Jesus.”

In this battle for the hearts and minds of commuters, the atheists seem to have been overly belligerent, although it is understandable that they get a little testy this time of year. [read on] (more…)

Why I’m Posting Bail Money for Julian Assange

Yesterday, in the Westminster Magistrates Court in London, the lawyers for WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange presented to the judge a document from me stating that I have put up $20,000 of my own money to help bail Mr. Assange out of jail.
Furthermore, I am publicly offering the assistance of my website, my servers, my domain names and anything else I can do to keep WikiLeaks alive and thriving as it continues its work to expose the crimes that were concocted in secret and carried out in our name and with our tax dollars.

The Guardian has details today over the solitary confinement in which Julian Assange has been held. The conditions were quite repressive but still a lot better than the conditions under which Bradley Manning (who downloaded the diplomatic cables and gave them to WikiLeaks) is being held. Both have not been convicted of any crime.
A British court approved Assange’s bail on certain conditions, including his wearing an electronic tag and observing a curfew.
Sweden appealled the granting of bail, so an appellate court will review Assange’s bail application within 48 hours, during which time he will continue to be imprisoned. Sweden certainly is going all out to ensure Assange remains behind bars.

The average mall Santa sees more than 10,000 kids each season, working long hours with few breaks. While some trained, long-time Santas make $5,000 up to $20,000 for a six-week stint, the majority make around minimum wage, according to “Confessions of a Mall Santa.” …
Santa impersonators are among the thousands of workers hired for temporary positions during the holiday season. Though the season is supposed to be about generosity and cheer, workers rights groups warn that it is a high-risk time for wage theft, which is especially prevalent among temporary jobs of the type that proliferate during the holidays. Iemand uit het verre Nederland, geen moslim, geen Ramadan gewend, help ik bij zijn inburgering in Quatar.
Na de ‘les’ vraag ik „Weet je wat Ramadan is?” Hij heeft wel enig idee. „Waarom doen wij dit? “Wat eten we dan?”. Zijn blauwe ogen kijken me hoopvol aan. Hij denkt.

Ik zie een lachje tussen weten en twijfel in.
Dan zegt hij: „babi pangang.”
Ik heb hem meteen 20 stokgeslagen gegeven.

Tijdens een van mijn fietstochten door Thailand werd de 60e verjaardag van de troonsbestijging van koning Bhumi Bol gevierd. Overal waren er een soort altaren opgericht met levensgrote afbeeldingen van de koning en zijn gemaal in ceremoniële dracht. Vaak zag ik ook een foto met het ernstige gezicht van de koning die langs zijn neus naar beneden kijkt en zijn wijsvinger opsteekt in de richting van zijn neuspunt. Aan die neuspunt hing, geloof het of niet, een klein zweetdruppeltje. Wellicht hebben de koning en zijn hoffotograaf aan de bevolking duidelijk willen maken, dat de koning behalve een serieus en ietwat belerend vorst ook maar een mens is, die het soms warm heeft en zweet net als zijn onderdanen.
Primus inter pares dus.
Ik denk dat de koning zijn immense populariteit niet weinig aan deze foto te danken heeft. Je kunt je koningsgezindheid in Thailand publiekelijk tonen door het dragen van een hardgeel poloshirt met het koninklijk embleem op de borst gestikt.Overal zag je dit shirt en ik heb zelfs een toerist met zo’n shirt zien lopen, de slijmbal.

Ik fietste van Phangnga naar Krabi en ontwaarde overal politieagenten langs de weg met een tussenafstand van ca 300 meter. Mij werd verteld dat er straks iemand van de koninklijke familie zou passeren en daarvoor had men de nodige blikken agenten opengetrokken. Overal zenuwachtig geblaas op fluitjes en portofoonverkeer.

They rebuked the $1.2 billion in funding for high-speed rail projects, which Obama tried “to force down the throats of the taxpayers.” And to the delight of the voters, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood pulled that funding from Ohio and Wisconsin, offering it instead to states who are planning for the future. The Republican who is gonna take over as chairman of the Financial Committee of the House says is how it is. Spencer Bachus (R-Al) is refreshingly honest. Great. Let is be known:

Bachus, in an interview Wednesday night, said he brings a “main street” perspective to the committee, as opposed to Wall Street.
“In Washington, the view is that the banks are to be regulated, and my view is that Washington and the regulators are there to serve the banks,” he said.

This is the wrong time to raise taxes, say the politicians. The economy is fragile, say the economists. The recovery is halting, say the pundits. In a few years, they all affirm, we will need to get our fiscal house in order. Of course, just a few years ago, the economy was doing fine, and Washington decided it wasn’t the moment to worry about the deficit. Instead, over the past decade, we cut taxes, added a massive entitlement program (prescription drugs for the elderly) and spent trillions on two wars. Somehow, no matter what the economic clock says, it’s never time in Washington to cut spending or raise taxes. Call it manana economics. (Fareed Zakaria, Washington Post)
