Nu de grote autofabrikanten zich echt met de productie van een electrische auto gaan bemoeien, gaat het vast snel. Deze nieuwe geheel electrische Nissan Leaf kost in Amerika door subsidie van de Obama-regering maar 20.000 dollar (15.000 euro). JdeW gaat hem proberen.

The fully electric, low priced Nissan Leaf went on sale yesterday. Olivier Chalouhi of Redwood City in Silicon Valley was the first buyer. The vehicle was priced at $33,500, but dropped to $20,000 after federal and state rebates. The Leaves, if you will, currently on sale now are made in Nissan’s factory in Oppama, Japan. Thanks to the Obama Administration and a $1.4 billion Energy Department loan, in 2012 the Leaf will be made at Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. 1300 jobs are expected.

Phil Donahue is een zeer gerenommeerde Amerikaanse journalist die werkte voor het tv-netwerk MSNBC. Hij werd in 2002 volstrekt onverwacht ontslagen.
Waarom?
Hij sprak zich uit tijdens de opmaak van de Irak-oorlog - u weet het nog wel: de leugens, de verdraaiingen - tegen een invasie van Irak. Een van de weinige topjournalisten in de Verenigde Staten die de lef had er tegen te zijn en het ook nog in het openbaar te zeggen.
Hij heeft het over de media in Amerika, waar vrijwel ieder nieuwsorgaan nu onderdeel is van een multinationale onderneming die in de eerste plaats geld wil verdienen.

You generally don’t find too many conversations like this one on cable news since I’m sure their bosses wouldn’t want to shine a light too brightly on the need to bust these companies up. Every once in a while one slips through like this one though.

PARKER: If you think Oprah has the longest running syndicated talk show in history, think again. That particular honor belongs to our next guest.
SPITZER: Phil Donahue invented the daytime confessional format, aiming both high brow and low in his 29-year long career. We spoke to him earlier.

Glenn Greenwald - CNN [this weekend] spewed pure, absurd fear-mongering against WikiLeaks; Assange really is their new Saddam Hussein and WikiLeaks their new WMD. And just to underscore the contrast between how media outlets around the world behave, the French newspaper Liberation — a mainstream center-left publication — announced today that it was creating a “mirror-WikiLeaks” site and hosting it on their paper’s website (its mirror site is here). It is even possible to conceive of a mainstream American newspaper doing that?

Het heeft gevroren, de watergangen liggen dicht maar het ijs is nog zeker niet sterk genoeg. In alle vroegte jog ik langs het kanaal. Blaffend komt er een hond op me af.
“Hij doet niks hoor” zei de bazin. Dan glijdt ze uit, door het ijs het water in. “Ik doe ook niks hoor” antwoord ik haar.
Ze vond het niet prettig.

Zo liep ik eens langs de Seine te joggen. Een hond sprong blaffend tegen me op en zette zijn smerige poten op mijn licht grijze PUMA trainingsbroek. Zijn eigenaar zag het aan en riep het beest niet eens terug.
Toen ik hem passeerde wees ik op mijn besmeurde broek en kon het niet laten hartelijk “merci!” te zeggen. De man ontstak in woede en wilde me demonstratief een bankbiljet voor de stomerij overhandigen.
Dat dat voor mij niet hoefde, maar dat ik alleen hoopte dat hij zijn hondje in het vervolg aan de lijn zou houden als er een jogger aan kwam, en dat hij toch op zijn minst ’sorry’ had kunnen zeggen …. daar snapte hij niets van. Hij was witheet. Echt gebeurd. Hij Fransman. Ik Nederlander. Tja.

U weet het misschien nog. Er stond al twee keer eerder iets over op drasties. Bladeren drogen uit en sterven af als ze maanden in de buurt van wifi-routers staan die signalen voor draadloos internet uitzenden. Nu besteedt in de Wall Street Journal er weer aandacht aan.
Wetenschappers van Wageningen Universiteit plaatsten essen in een ruimte met zes draadloze routers. Ze deden het al snel een stuk minder goed dan bomen in een ruimte zonder draadloos internet. Maar meer onderzoek is nodig, aldus wetenschapper Dr. Andre van Lammeren. In dit stuk komt ook Niek van ‘t Wout (verantwoordelijk voor de openbare ruimte in Alphen aan den Rijn) aan het woord die als eerste zieke bomen in Alphen aan den Rijn onderzocht en het onderzoek van de Universiteit Wageningen initieerde.
Voorlopige conclusie: er kunnen geen conclusies worden getrokken. Behalve wellicht dat er door de essen in de ruimte met wifi een stuk meer wordt gelachen!

Dutch reports on Wi-Fi and sick trees off the mark

Wall Street Journal - There were really two separate reports. One was conducted by the Dutch municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn, of some troubling abnormalities in the city’s trees. The other, funded by the town, was a laboratory experiment pitting some trees exposed to Wi-Fi signals to others that weren’t. This study found some damage to the Wi-Fi-exposed trees, though the nature of that damage was different than the damage seen in the city’s trees.
Niek van ‘t Wout, who heads Alphen aan den Rijn’s green space, is the driving force behind these studies. His town examined 600 trees and found 70% had abnormalities — which led to articles world-wide claiming that 70% of urban trees are sick. Another investigation of the city’s trees found a lower, though still alarming, figure of 39%. [read on] (more…)

Yesterday, friends and family of Elizabeth Edwards gathered in Raleigh, NC to bury Elizabeth Edwards, who died this week of cancer. Outside, five protesters from the extremist anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church picketed the event because they said Edwards “spent her life in defiance and disobedience to God.” The church regularly harasses the families of dead American soldiers at their funerals with signs like “pray for more dead soldiers,” and “your sons are in hell.”
But at Edwards’ funeral today, the tiny group of hate-mongers were confronted by more than 300 counterprotesters, who turned out to stand against hate, despite the rain:

Commercial enterprise Space Exploration Technologies has flawlessly put a rocket into orbit around the Earth with a full sized capsule capable of carrying six astronauts.
So SpaceX now has an operational system capable of putting payload like satellites and eventually people (in maybe two years) into space that costs much less than the shuttle or the big Russian boosters.
What kind of savings does that mean?
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk: “A seat on the Dragon Spacecraft launched by the Falcon 9 rocket would cost less than $20 million, and it is 100% manufactured and launched in the United States. This means over a 1000 new high quality jobs while saving taxpayers $2 billion a year.” Asked about more ambitious journeys, Musk added, “After we master delivering payload and passengers to the ISS, we certainly have other destinations in mind …”

Recovery begins with realism and there is nothing to be gained by kidding ourselves. On the topics that I know most about, the administration is beyond being a disappointment. It’s beyond inept, unprepared, weak, and ineffective. Four and again two years ago, the people demanded change. As a candidate, the President promised change. In foreign policy and the core economic policies, he delivered continuity instead. That was true on Afghanistan and it was and is true in economic policy, especially in respect to the banks. What we got was George W. Bush’s policies without Bush’s toughness, without his in-your-face refusal to compromise prematurely.
