Wat is hier gebeurd? Een raar verhaal. Volgens het IPPMedia in Tanzania is het Nederlandse bedrijf Bioshape Tanzania, dat biodiesel zou gaan produceren van jatropha in Tanzania, er mee opgehouden. Zonder duidelijke opgave van reden. Het personeel zou al een jaar lang niet zijn uitbetaald en heeft daarom de tractoren in beslag genomen.
Was het de droogte?
Het bedrijf zou van Cor Vaes en Wil Hermans zijn. Hoewel het Nederlandse moederbedrijf in surseance van betaling is, zegt Vaes in een ander artikel dat het bedrijf in Tanzania op het punt staat verder te gaan.
Opvallend is dat ook vakgroep Energy Science van de Universiteit Utrecht er bij betrokken is. Twee studenten doen onderzoek naar het succes van de teelt van jatropha voor biodiesel in Tanzania - ’Socio economic impacts of Jatropha production in Tanzania’.

Master Thesis - Scenario analysis will be carried out in which the future impacts will be evaluated. Land ownership and land use is particularly relevant for the socio-economic performance of Jatropha production in the Tanzanian context, but also for the environmental performance (GHG balance and biodiversity impacts). Also the use of water, if applicable, should be investigated, as this is often a crucial limiting factor in Tanzania.

Hundred jobless as Dutch firm suspends jatropha production

Some men who have water storage facilities have developed close relationship with women and young girls. Women have found themselves either knowingly or unknowingly falling in love with such men. These men take advantage of shortage of water in the village while they have plenty of it and lure women and young girls for sexual exploits. They walk into their homes during night asking for water before men raping them.

QUESTION: I understand that you are faced with prolonged drought and shortage of food, when did you start experiencing such problems?

ANSWER: The water woes in the ward started way back in 2004 after Hifadhi Ardhi Dodoma (HADO) project, which had the aim of re-greening the area by planting trees, protecting soil erosion, reserved forests and water catchments areas, and reducing the number of livestock closed its operations. When the project closed it business in 2004, many residents started felling down trees for charcoal and farming while others grazed their cattle in the reserved forests.

Er is geen Afrikaans land dat een bestuur heeft dat kwalitiatief ook maar in de buurt komt van Westerse landen. Afrika is er na het koloniale tijdperk alleen maar op achteruit gegaan. In bepaalde gevallen terug naar het stenen tijdperk.
Economisch waren Afrikanen zestig jaar geleden beter af dan de meeste Aziaten en veel Zuidamerikanen. Ook was ieder land in Afrika veiliger dan nu. En zelfs met de rechtspraak was het in de meeste landen beter gesteld.
Eigenlijk zijn het allemaal uitbuiters en machtswellustelingen die het daar sindsdien voor het zeggen hebben gehad. Nooit zal een Afrikaanse leider na een jaar of acht zeggen: het karwei zit er op. Jullie zijn arm gebleven en ik ben miljardair geworden, laat een ander het nu maar eens doen.
Dat ligt overigens niet in de eerste plaats aan de dictatortjes zelf. Het is de vraag of het in het Westen zonder ons goed gecontroleerde kiessysteem veel beter zou gaan. Nee, dat ligt opmerkelijk genoeg aan de Afrikanen zelf. Zij accepteren dit gedrag van hun leiders en kiezen telkens weer dit soort mensen.
Is het de achterlijkheid? Het tribalisme?
Zeker is dat er geen plaats is voor enig optimisme. Er valt namelijk helaas helemaal niets aan te doen. Want, ik zeg het nog maar eens eerlijk, democratie is erfelijk.

Drasties doet veel aan hoe landen omgaan met minderheden. De wijze waarop een staat omgaat met minderheden en zwakkeren (vrouwen, kinderen, dieren) vinden wij de belangrijkste maat voor de beschaving van een samenleving.
In Oeganda verscheen onlangs een krant met foto’s van de honderd belangrijkste homo’s van het land en de oproep om ze op te hangen. Eerder probeerden de leiders in dat Afrikaanse semi-dictatuurtje een wet in te voeren die homosexueel gedrag strafbaar zou maken, en wel met de dood.
Opvallend is dat de gewaardeerde Amerikaanse priester Rick Warren, die de inzegening van het presidentschap van Barack Obama deed, heel goede banden heeft met de religieuze leiders in Oeganda. Sterker nog, de voorgestelde wetgeving in Oeganda was geinspireerd door drie Amerikaanse evangelisten die in 2009 in Oeganda de blijde boodschap van Jezus Christus kwamen brengen: dood aan de homo’s. Niet lang na hun bezoek kwam de Oegandese minister van Justitie met het wetsvoorstel dat die boodschap van God moest legaliseren, de Anti-Homosexualiteit Wet. De wet heeft het vanwege internationale druk niet gehaald.
Maar als de haat eenmaal is aangewakkerd, is die moeilijk te stoppen, zie maar.

Ghana gaat niet dezelfde fouten maken als Nederland op economisch gebied, dat zei vice-president Mahana dit weekeinde.
Dat is een hele opluchting, vindt u ook niet?
Ten koste van alles zal Ghana voorkomen dat het in dezelfde deplorabele toestand geraakt als ooit Nederland. U hebt het wellicht verdrongen maar de Nederlandse economie was ooit volkomen stuk tijdens een periode die wordt gekenmerkt door de Hollandse Ziekte, de Dutch Disease. Dat waren bittere tijden van armoede, ja hongersnood zelfs. Ghana gaat het niet zo doen en dat is uiteraard geweldig nieuws voor de bevolking en de buitenlandse bedrijven die massaal in de economie hebben geinvesteerd.

My sister arrived in Ghana with all her monies. I mean, her various bank accounts were fully withdrawn-not a pesewa left in them. She sold her house, quit her job, and brought with her everything to Ghana. Folks, understand that my sister returned to Ghana not selfishly motivated, but to play her part accordingly.
Strangely enough, the people whom she came to aid saw her as an outsider rather than an insider. Right from the word go, bribery reared its ugly head. My sister couldn’t get anything done without bribing somebody. The sad thing is, when the people saw that she was new in town, they adjusted their prices. All of a sudden, everything was charged in dollars instead of cedis.

Hairdresser Goes Blind In Salon …After Combing Woman’s Hair

Peace FM Online - A middle aged woman came to a popular hairdressing salon located in Kumasi to fix a weave-on. Barely 20 minutes after an apprentice had started on the hair, an excruciating shout was heard from the young girl. She told her colleagues that a thick smoke had entered her eyes from the woman’s hair and that she could not see clearly.
Adjacent to the shop is a prayer camp so the pastor was implored to come over to pray for the girl. After several minutes of fervent prayers the sight was partially restored. Shockingly, the middle aged woman never ever uttered a word when the girl was going through her ordeal. Before anybody could say jack, she was nowhere to be found.

Conclusie: In Ghana maakt een of andere beginnende kapster een puinhoop van je haar en je moet maken dat je wegkomt of anders is de kans groot dat je vanwege hekserij op de brandstapel wordt gezet.

Wist u dat Mandela niet alleen perfect Afrikaans spreekt maar ook heel goed Nederlands? Dus niet alleen de Afrikaners steunen Nederland maar ook het merendeel van de zwarte Afrikanen. “It’s my language and culture”, aldus Clive Solomon. Merietjie Serfontein: “The whole country may not be rooting for Holland - maybe just 99%.”

De Zuidafrikaanse cartoonist Zapiro heeft het weer voor elkaar gekregen. Een cartoon over Mohammed (correcte spelling M-o-h-a-m-m-e-d, Arabisch prediker) in de Zuidafrikaanse krant Mail & Guardian over een schrijnend gebrek aan humor bij moslim theologen leidde tot een woedeuitbarsting bij de Council of Muslim Theologians (Jamiatul Ulama) in Kaapstad. Die stapte naar de rechter en eiste dat de verkoop van de krant zou worden gestopt en de cartoon alsnog zou worden verwijderd. Ze bereikten al snel hun doel want binnen een uur was in heel Zuid-Afrika geen Mail & Guardian meer te krijgen.
Eerder kwam een andere spotprent van Zapiro in de Sunday Times in het nieuws. Die ging over (de ooit van verkrachting beschuldigde) Jacob Zuma die in de Zapiro cartoon door zijn vriendjes werd aangemoedigd Vrouwe Justitia te onteren. Daarop stapten zijn ANC-vrienden naar de rechter.

Will the Prophet Mohammad cartoon in South Africa threaten the World Cup?

Mail & Guardian, Johannesburg, South Africa - It was a late night in court for the Mail & Guardian as the Council of Muslim Theologians on Thursday evening tried to stop the newspaper from publishing a Zapiro cartoon featuring the Prophet Muhammad.
An interdict was not granted, but on Friday morning M&G editor-in-chief Nic Dawes and other staff were fielding a flood of angry callers, and even death threats hit the newspaper’s office.

Wie gaat het extreem conservatieve deel van de Boere leiden, nu Eugene Terre’Blanche is vermoord? De Afrikaner Weerstands Beweging telde voor het eerst in jaren weer wat mee in Suid-Afrika. En nog altijd onder leiding van Terre’Blanche. Afrikaners maken zich steeds meer zorgen of hun land niet dezelfde kant op gaat als Zimbabwe. Terug naar de Middeleeuwen dus. Ze hebben schoon genoeg van de enorme misdaad, de groeiende corruptie en de positieve discriminatie die het voor blanken vrijwel onmogelijk maakt nog een baan als ambtenaar te krijgen.
De onvrede blijkt ook uit de populariteit van de Afrikaner zanger Bok van Blerk en zijn lied ‘De la Rey’ van de cd: ‘Jy praat nog steeds my taal’. Het is het lijflied van veel van de Boeren in Zuid-Afrika geworden. Het gaat over generaal Koos de la Rey - voorvaderen afkomstig uit Utrecht - die in 1899 de overweldigende overmacht van de Britten te weer stond.

Naar aanleiding van het verhaal van riversideblues trad, in het commentaar onder het ikje Verfrissend van zaterdag, publiceert drasties dit stukje van tien oktober 2008 nog eens. Riversideblues is ondanks alle waarschuwingen opgelicht in Ghana door criminelen die zich voordeden als een vrouw (’red me’) in nood.

Mannen zonder vrouw, vrouwen zonder geld
Je komt ze werkelijk overal tegen: mannen zonder vrouw. En wat je ook overal tegenkomt: vrouwen zonder geld. En dat komt mooi uit blijkt uit dit verhaal gebaseerd op de ervaring van de Belgische correspondent Rik Florin in Nigeria. Hij wordt uit zijn bed gebeld om een arme bedrogen Belg te helpen. Nee, erger nog, twee arme bedrogen Belgen. Een verhaal dat correspondenten in minder ontwikkelde delen van de wereld heel bekend zal voorkomen.

Arme landgenoten

Op een vroege ochtend wordt ik gebeld door een wanhopige landgenoot. Zijn vriendin zou deze morgen op vliegveld Zaventem aankomen. Hij had het geld voor de reis en allerlei onkosten al overgemaakt. Maar helaas, ze is volstrekt buiten haar schuld in de problemen gekomen. En of we onmiddelijk kunnen helpen.

Wanhopige man:
“Maar het gaat om een landgenoot.”
Uw correspondent:
“Hoe weet u dat het om een landgenoot gaat?”
Wanhopige man:
“Eu, dat zij heeft ze me zelf gezegd.”
Uw correspondent:
“Hoe ziet ze er uit?”
Wanhopige man:
“Eu, ik heb haar nog nooit gezien.”
Uw correspondent:
“Wat is er mis met haar?”
Wanhopige man:
“Ze is bestolen van al haar papieren en jullie moeten haar onmiddellijk helpen.”

De ontnuchtering volgt, wanneer al snel blijkt dat het verhaal weer eens niet klopt.
Het vervolg gaat dan vaak zo.
Wanhopige man:
“Jullie moeten mij onmiddellijk helpen om deze persoon op te sporen zodat ik mijn geld terug kan krijgen.”
Uw correspondent:
“U beseft dat er in Nigeria geen vaste adressen bestaan en geen bevolkingsregister is? En u wilt dat ik, Uw correspondent, deze fictieve persoon ga opsporen?”

Er zijn gevallen waarin die vraag met ‘ja’ wordt beantwoord.
Landgenoten? Correspondenten kunnen er niet genoeg van krijgen.

Ugandese vredesbemiddelaar krijgt Geuzenpenning
Nieuws.nl, (Novum) - De Ugandese vredesbemiddelaar Betty Bigombe krijgt zaterdag in Vlaardingen de Geuzenpenning uitgereikt. De onderscheiding wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan iemand die zich heeft ingezet voor democratie en tegen dictatuur, racisme en discriminatie. Bigombe wordt erkend als een van de belangrijkste onderhandelaars in het conflict tussen de Ugandese regering en de rebellenbeweging LRA.
De Geuzen waren de eerste verzetsstrijders in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Zij kwamen al direct na het begin van de oorlog in opstand tegen de Duitse bezetter. De meeste leden van het Geuzenverzet uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog kwamen uit Rotterdam, Schiedam, Maassluis en Vlaardingen.

Bracelets to ignite Dutch team spirit

The 100 000 beaded bracelets are part of a campaign originated by the Dutch social entrepreneur company The Rainbow Collection, and Africa!Ignite - a Durban-based company that supports crafters in rural areas in the province.
The Rainbow Collection Dieuwertjie Damen, who is in the country, said the orange bracelets had already been bought by 60 Dutch retail companies, and the aim was to “flood” the country with them before the World Cup.

Waarom doet drasties zo veel aan dit soort zaken?
Omdat de mate van beschaving van een land valt af te lezen aan de wijze waarop men omgaat met minderheden, met minder bedeelden en met de zwakkeren in de samenleving. Dat betreft dus kinderen, armen, gehandicapten, mensen met een afwijkende sexuele geaardheid, mensen met een afwijkend kleurtje en mensen met een afwijkende godsdienst. Tenslotte moeten in dit verband ook dieren worden genoemd, in het bijzonder blinde vinken.

The measure has been widely condemned around the world, from UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to federal lawmakers of both parties in the United States. The Obama administration has issued statements condemning the legislation and was working privately with Ugandan officials, but the President himself has not yet commented. In December, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton referenced the Ugandan legislation, saying, “We have to stand against any efforts to marginalize and criminalize and penalize members of the LGBT community worldwide.” She has also personally spoken to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni about the bill.

Nederlandse parlementariërs waren het afgelopen weekeinde op bezoek in Rwanda - bekend van de genocide in 1994 - en dat werd geen zondagsreisje. De Rwandese volksvertegenwoordigers spaarden de delegatie niet. Zo is het volgens Rwanda helemaal fout dat Nederland haar ontwikkelingshulp vooral besteedt aan hulporganisaties en niet gewoon gelijk in de staatskas van Rwanda stort. Hun argumenten: NGO’s zijn vaak corrupt!
Ook zijn ze boos dat Nederland de ontwikkelingshulp stopte vanwege de hulp van Rwanda aan Congolese rebellen. Respect willen ze. Of letterlijk: “Wij eisen een beetje respect.”

Afrika is het continent dat het langst door mensen is bewoond. Dus ze hebben heel wat meer tijd gehad dan de bewoners van Europa en Amerika om er wat moois van te maken. Maar ja, ze hebben zich laten ringeloren door achtereenvolgens de Arabieren, de Europeanen, en nu weer de Chinezen.
Ach, waren er maar meer Afrikanen als Nsehe uit Kenia die in de California Chronicle de waarheid als een (heilige) koe opschrijft namelijk dat de armoede in Afrika niet verklaard kan worden door het kolonialisme. Sommige van de rijkste landen ter wereld zijn voormalige kolonien: de VS, Australie, Nieuw Zeeland en Hong Kong. En sommige van de armste landen ter wereld zijn nooit een kolonie geweest: Ethiopie, Liberia, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan. Dat argument is slechts een dekmantel voor brute Afrikaanse dictators.
JdeW stelt daarom voor dat de wereld gewoon de waarheid onder ogen ziet: ze kunnen het niet. Dan is de oplossing simpel. Breidt het Foster Parents plan wat uit. Laat Westerse landen een land in Afrika adopteren. Goed bestuur, tripartite, veiligheid, zet de Mugabe’s aan het werk als voorman op een fabriek, onafhankelijke centrale bank, herstel verwoeste en verwaarloosde infrastructuur, trek industrie aan en verwerk lokale producten. Wel oppassen dat er niet weer oorlog komt om de mooiste plekjes. Moet je zien hoe snel het gaat.

California Chronicle - Recently, as part of an academic assignment at school, I was engaged in an intellectual debate with a few colleagues. We were seeking answers to the roots of Africa´s problems. It was an interesting discussion for me. Shockingly, the majority of my colleagues subscribed to the idea that the major cause of Africa´s social-political and economic problems was the legacy left behind by the colonial masters. As far as they were concerned, the colonialists ruined Africa for good. For the records, they had some strong arguments to support their claims. I do not intend to go into that.
Africa is known as the problem continent. And indeed, the problems are legion. Poverty, diseases, famine, poor leadership, religious conflicts, ethnic clashes and corruption are a few of them. With each passing day, the problems increase. For long, the economic and social underdevelopment of the African nation has been blamed on white colonialists who exploited the land and left Africa bare. Up till now, the blame game continues.

America is a ’shining city on a hill’ and a ‘beacon of hope to oppressed peoples everywhere’ (Reagan).
Apparently there are only three conditions. You have to be a rich, straight and white oppressed peoples. So no hope for you when you’re gay with a ‘hidden and dark agenda’.
Anyone surprised about this?

NewYorkTimes - Last March, three American evangelical Christians, whose teachings about “curing” homosexuals have been widely discredited in the United States, arrived here in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks.
The theme of the event, according to Stephen Langa, its Ugandan organizer, was “the gay agenda — that whole hidden and dark agenda” — and the threat homosexuals posed to Bible-based values and the traditional African family.
For three days, according to participants and audio recordings, thousands of Ugandans, including police officers, teachers and national politicians, listened raptly to the Americans, who were presented as experts on homosexuality. The visitors discussed how to make gay people straight, how gay men often sodomized teenage boys and how “the gay movement is an evil institution” whose goal is “to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity.”
Now the three Americans are finding themselves on the defensive, saying they had no intention of helping stoke the kind of anger that could lead to what came next: a bill to impose a death sentence for homosexual behavior. read on>> (more…)
