Een historisch boek te schrijven zonder fouten is bijna onmogelijk. Dat blijkt uit dit boek ‘A Rainbow in the Night’ van Dominique Lapierre over de Zuid-Afrikaanse geschiedenis. Zie hieronder hoe deze criticus zijn recensie besluit. “To his credit, Lapierre has dug wide and deep to come up with some unusual and interesting oddities. Among these, in an appendix, are extracts from a totally factual pamphlet published in London in 1959 called “This Is Apartheid.” But even here Lapierre’s inaccuracy creeps in. He writes that Leslie Rubin “wrote this pamphlet as she represented the Africans of the Cape Province..” What he says is correct except for the pronoun: Sen. Leslie Rubin was not a woman. I should know: He was my father.”

Pastoor Rick Warren deed de inzegening van het presidentschap van Barack Obama. Dezelfde Warren heeft sterke banden met religieuze leiders in Uganda. Dezelfde leiders die proberen in dat Afrikaanse semi-dictatuurtje een wet aan te nemen die bepaald gedrag van homosexuelen zal bestraffen met de dood. Na weken te hebben gezwegen, komt de Amerikaanse religieuze leider eindelijk met een verklaring die de voorgestelde wetgeving afwijst. Both UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have called the legislation unacceptable, and now Sweden is adding its voice:
According to comments attributed to Gunilla Carlsson, Sweden’s development assistance minister, the Swedish government says it would cut aid to Uganda over an anti-gay law they find “appalling”.
“My number two at the ministry, who has direct contact with the Ugandan government, has brought it up,” Ms Carlsson recently told Swedish Radio News. “We’ve talked about it in Uganda, and I’ve also tried to speak to the kind of organisations in Uganda that are the target of the legislation.” Uganda receives about $50 million in development aid from Sweden annually.
Reuters reports that the legislation will “likely” pass the Ugandan parliament. Last night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow highlighted three “anti-gay American activists” who inspired the bill, and tonight, she’ll profile Americans who have the power to stop the “Kill the Gays” bill.

Disco zaterdagavond. Een prachtige donkere vrouw met kroeshaar, volle borsten en Tina-Turner-benen valt op me zoals ik nog nooit heb meegemaakt. Later samen in de auto wijs ik het verlangde lekkers aan.
„Mmmmm”, brengt ze uit met ogen vol verlangen. Ze leunt achterover.
Net als ik het deeg heb doorkneed en de olie verhit, wordt het portier van de auto opengegooid. Haar verloofde!
“Toch maar liever een negerzoen”, glimlacht ze als ze aan zijn hand uit het zicht verdwijnt.
Nu we het toch over Ghana hebben. De directeur van het Vervoersbedrijf van Ghana (MMT, Metro Mass Transit) is de Nederlander Henk Visschers. Tenminste nog wel. Er wordt namelijk flink aan zijn stoelpoten gezaagd. Het blijkt dat de 400 bussen die ruim twee jaar geleden door China zijn afgeleverd aan Ghana aan de kant staan. Het probleem bij de bussen - waarvan niemand lijkt te weten of ze zijn gekocht of geschonken - lijkt te zijn dat er gedurende die twee jaar nauwelijks onderhoud aan is gepleegd. Waarom? Wel, de gebruiksaanwijzing is in het Chinees.
Tja… het houdt een keer op na jaren geen olieverversen. Overigens gaat het volgens Visschers slechts om 344 van de 400 bussen, 56 rijden nog.
De Ghanese topjournalist Odjidja stelt Visschers in de onderstaande column de volgende vragen:
Zijn deze bussen typerend voor de kwaliteit van Chinese producten?
Of doen de bussen het niet omdat ze twee jaar niet zijn onderhouden?
Zijn ze niet onderhouden omdat ze een gift zijn?
Hoe veilig zijn de 56 bussen die nog wel rijden?
Doen deze bussen het alleen in China?
A Daily Graphic feature of September 2, 2009 claimed that 400 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses “were down and out.” The Managing Director of the (MMT), Mr. Henk Visschers, instead of hiding his face somewhere, claimed same day that not all the “400 MMT buses, delivered from China to the Ministry of Roads and Transport in 2006, have been grounded.”
Mr Visschers, as if doing the country a favor, corrected the number of the broken down buses given by the Daily Graphic to 344. The overall impression given for the breakdown was that it was the fault of the Chinese for not supplying maintenance manual in English. read on here>> (more…)

In Ghana zijn de voorbereidingen voor de feestelijke intocht van het 19-de eeuwse staatshoofd in volle gang. Diverse nog levende staatshoofden hebben al toegezegd bij de historische gebeurtenis aanwezig te zullen zijn. Naast een aantal Arabische leiders - ‘veel ervaring met afgehakte hoofden’ - geven ook premier Balkenende - ‘even de koppen bij elkaar steken’ - en president Bush - ‘gelukkig staatshoofd af’ - acte de presence. President Barack Obama heeft afgezegd, vanwege ‘teveel aan zijn kop’. Frankrijk wordt vertegenwoordigd door Maximilien Robespierre, dat wil zeggen zijn hoofd.
Ghana eiste al in oktober het geroofde hoofd van de tribale leider terug maar eerst weigerde de universiteit toe te geven dat het zich in het museum bevond. Tot vorig jaar het verlossende woord kwam. We hebben hem!
Nederland kwam in het bezit van het hoofd als gevolg van de handel in slaven, goud en kralen die in de 19de eeuw bestond tussen Nederland en Ghana, het toenmalige Goudkust. De slaven gingen naar Suriname, de kraaltjes naar Ghanese leiders als koning Badu Bonsu en het goud naar Nederland. Toen over die verdeling onenigheid ontstond, verloor de Ghanese koning zijn hoofd.

On his radio show today, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh quoted at length from a new article in the American Thinker entitled, “Obama, the African Colonial” by L.E. Ikenga who identifies herself as a “first generation born West African-American woman.” In the article Ikenga argues that Obama is best understood through his “identification with his father” and his adoption of a “political mindset rooted in post colonial Africa”:
Like many educated intellectuals in post colonial Africa, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was enraged at the transformation of his native land by its colonial conqueror. But instead of embracing the traditional values of his own tribal cultural past, he embraced an imported Western ideology, Marxism. I call such frustrated and angry modern Africans who embrace various foreign “isms”, instead of looking homeward for repair of societies that are broken, African Colonials. They are Africans who serve foreign ideas.

Gewoon wat ontwikkelingshulp vanuit Nederland voor Gambia zoals beschreven in de lokale krant van The Gambia, de Daily Observer: 12 balen rijst, 4 vaten olie, 3 zakken uien, 4 kilo knoflook, 4 pakken jumbo (?), een doos tomatenpuree en drie dozen kippen (?).
A Dutch philanthropist foundation, Zeeland Foundation Support and Built-Up Gambia, based in Holland, recently donated foodstuffs and learning materials to the St Johns School for the Deaf at a ceremony held at the school ground in Kanifing. Een achttienjarige blanke boerenzoon, een kind van het Zuid-Afrika na de apartheid, loopt op een ochtend een krottenwijk binnen en opent zonder een woord te zeggen het vuur op de zwarte bewoners. Er vallen vier doden, onder wie een moeder en een kind.
Op zoek naar het waarom van de moord probeert Bram Vermeulen grotere vragen te beantwoorden over de plaats van de blanken in het zuiden van Afrika in de eerste tien jaar van de nieuwe eeuw. Tegen de achtergrond van het felle integratiedebat in Nederland kijkt hij naar een kant van de wereld waar de blanken in de minderheid zijn.
Wat voedt hun angst en hun onzekerheid? Welke onuitroeibare misverstanden maken hun integratie in dit continent ruim vier eeuwen na aankomst zo moeilijk?

Dutchman Bram Vermeulen was a correspondent in South Africa. His book of that name has been published on the eve of the election of Jacob Zuma as the country’s fourth black president.
Vermeulen, who was named journalist of the year in 2008, says he spent seven years trying in vain - as a white man - to integrate into South Africa’s black community. In his book, he concludes that he has become what he once despised: a real white man. “Before I left for South Africa, I was never aware of what it meant. When you live among a majority of whites, you’re basically colourless. A Bulawayo-bound train from Victoria Falls killed three elephants.
Grateful passengers hailed the train driver as a hero after he calmly steered the locomotive, averting disaster. Witnesses, narrating the dramatic sequence of events, said a herd elephants was crossing the railway line when the train struck three of the jumbos.
“There were nine elephants and the train struck two adult elephants and a calf,” said a passenger. The train did not derail but the locomotive was damaged and another had to be sent from Dete to continue with the journey.
“I would like to commend the train driver for remaining calm and managing to steady the train before it struck the animals as that avoided a catastrophic incident that would have claimed human lives,” National Railways of Zimbabwe public relations manager Masikati said.
Premier Morgan Tsvangirai van Zimbabwe was vorige maand mogelijk toch het doelwit van een aanslag. Dat meldt de BBC op basis van de eerste onderzoeksresultaten van het ongeval waarbij Tsvangirai’s vrouw overleed. De politicus zelf raakte gewond toen zijn auto ten zuiden van Harare door een vrachtwagen werd geramd. In eerste instantie werd gemeld dat er sprake was van een ongeval.
Functionarissen van de partij van Tsvangirai (MDC) betwijfelen dat nu. Tsvangirai en zijn vrouw hadden moeten worden beschermd door een auto met beveiligers van de geheime dienst. Die reden echter weg, vlak voor het ongeval plaatsvond. En de vrachtwagen werd bestuurd door een ex-soldaat, veelal zijn dat supporters van Mugabe. Verder is het verdacht dat de beveiligers direct na het ongeval bij de auto verschenen, overigens zonder hulp te verlenen.
