Gisteren werd de Democratische vertegenwoordiger van het Amerikaanse Congress, Gabrielle Giffords, neergeschoten door een 22-jarige man die ook op twintig andere mensen schoot waarbij hij zes doodde. De verdachte is Jared Lee Loughner - in de VS lezen ze wel de rechten voor maar gebruiken ze geen initialen. Op het internet hield hij scheldpartijen tegen de Amerikaanse overheid.
De Politieke Actie Commissie (PAC) van Sarah Palin had tot gisteren een kaart op haar website staan waarin het vizier van een geweer stond gericht op het district van de Congresswoman. Dat omdat ze voor betaalbare gezondheidszorg heeft gestemd voor iedereen. Palin noemde dat een stem voor ‘deathpanels’. Eerder werd het hoofdkwartier van Giffords gevandaliseerd en stafleden van haar aangevallen. Giffords zelf waarschuwde vorig jaar dat het richten van een vizier conseqeunties zou kunnen hebben.
Nu vecht ze voor haar leven na een schot door het hoofd.
Hoe reageert de Republikein Lamar Alexander op een vraag van CNN-reporter Candy Crowley over Palin’s afbeelding op haar website?
CROWLEY: Was it over the line, sort of specifically, since it’s now being talked about everywhere, with Sarah Palin’s web ads about people that she would like to see targeted for political defeat. ALEXANDER: Well, Candy, I think you’re responsible, by bringing this up, of doing the very thing you’re trying to condemn. You’re making and implying a direct connection between Sarah Palin and what happened. You’re picking out a particular incident. UPDATE, december 16th, 2010 at 4:54 pm - Het blog Drasties lag er vandaag een uur uit in Azië. Elders mogelijk ook, dat weet ik (JdeW) niet. Wat er precies is gebeurd, weet ik ook niet maar ik neem aan dat het te maken had met de publicatie op drasties van een geheime WikiLeaks ‘cable’ in het artikel:
Daarin stond de mening van de scheidende Amerikaanse ambassadeur Clifford Sobel over Nederland. Niets dan goeds over ons land overigens, dus daar kan het niet aan gelegen hebben.
Uiteindelijk is deze ’secret cable’ en een deel van het artikel toch maar verwijderd van drasties. De hele ‘cable’ is nog altijd te lezen op de site van de Britse krant The Guardian waar ik hem vandaan had.
Ik kan me niet anders voorstellen dan dat er actie is ondernomen tegen drasties vanwege deze publicatie. Kwam het uit de U.S.A? Was het de CIA?, de FBI?, de DHS?, Bromsnor?
Al met al ben ik er een beetje trots en een beetje bezorgd.
Bezorgd omdat ik drasties toch wel graag in de lucht wil houden. Trots op het feit dat drasties zoveel echte Amerikaanse patriotten in beweging heeft gebracht.
UPDATE, december 16th, 2010 at 4:54 pm, JdeW- Today this blog drasties couldn’t be seen for an hour. Most likely because I published earlier today a ’secret diplomatic cable’ which came from the site of the British newspaper TheGuardian. In this diplomatic cable departing U.S ambassador Clifford Sobel offered his very positive thoughts on the Netherlands. I’m pretty sure that action was taken against drasties because of the publication of this cable.
Who it was and where it came from? I have no idea.
In the end I’m a little bit proud and a little bit concerned.
Proud because I got a visit from a lot of great American patriots.
Concerned because I would like to keep drasties up and running.
Earlier, JdeW - The Guardian published a secret US embassy cable about the Netherlands. In this cable departing US ambassador Clifford Sobel offers his thoughts on how the US could develop even stronger relations with the Dutch. He describes the Netherlands as a “vital transatlanticanchor.” ’They are our best partner in developing pilot projects in the counterterrorism area, and are world leaders in development, free trade, international law and human rights.’
Sobel also suggests that the U.S. and others push the Dutch into taking a leading role in balancing the traditional Spanish dominance on Latin American, to counter Venezuelan “meddling” in the Caribbean.
Phil Donahue is een zeer gerenommeerde Amerikaanse journalist die werkte voor het tv-netwerk MSNBC. Hij werd in 2002 volstrekt onverwacht ontslagen.
Waarom?
Hij sprak zich uit tijdens de opmaak van de Irak-oorlog - u weet het nog wel: de leugens, de verdraaiingen - tegen een invasie van Irak. Een van de weinige topjournalisten in de Verenigde Staten die de lef had er tegen te zijn en het ook nog in het openbaar te zeggen.
Hij heeft het over de media in Amerika, waar vrijwel ieder nieuwsorgaan nu onderdeel is van een multinationale onderneming die in de eerste plaats geld wil verdienen.

You generally don’t find too many conversations like this one on cable news since I’m sure their bosses wouldn’t want to shine a light too brightly on the need to bust these companies up. Every once in a while one slips through like this one though.

Glenn Greenwald is consumed by the widespread lie in the American media that WikiLeaks ‘indiscriminate’ dumped secret cables of the American government on the internet. This lie proves powerfully how mindlessly subservient the American establishment media has become. They are willing to repeat completely false claims as long as it pleases the right people — the same people to whom they claim they are ‘adversarial watchdogs’.
How reporting on WikiLeaks can and should be done shows this editorial from The Guardian yesterday, in which the British newspaper not only defends WikiLeaks, but also justifies the ‘denial of service’ attacks from anonymous individuals. One of them is the yesterday arrested sixteen year old boy boy from the Netherlands who hacked various companies (MasterCard, Amazon, Paypal, etc.) who are serving in the Government’s war on WikiLeaks.
The Guardian - These companies all considered that their association with WikiLeaks damaged their brand image, a reflection prompted in some cases by a helpful call from the US state department. In essence they are trying to have it both ways: pretending in their marketing that they are free spirits and enablers of the cyber world, but only living up to that image as long as they don’t upset anyone really important…
The hacktivists of Anonymous may be accused of many things – such as immaturity or being run by a herd instinct. But theirs is the cyber equivalent of non-violent action or civil disobedience. It disrupts rather than damages.

Is liberal lefty Glenn Greenwald finally showing his true colors?
“At 11:30 am this morning, I’ll be on Al Jazeera debating WikiLeaks.”
There’s a big misunderstanding about WikiLeaks. Some people seem to think that Julian Assange - yesterday arrested and denied bail in England - and his cabal dumped 250.000 unedited documents on the internet.
That is not true.
WikiLeaks has posted on its website only 960 of the 251,297 diplomatic cables it has obtained. Almost every one of these cables was first published by one of its newspaper partners which are disclosing them, like The Guardian (Britain), the NYT (U.S.), El Pais (Spain), Le Monde (France), Der Spiegel (Germany), etc.
Does he have a partner in the Netherlands?
The cables are edited to protect innocent people and otherwise minimize harm.
Some American politicians seem to want to prosecute everyone publishing the cables, including all journalists, newspapers, blogs etc..
In The New Republic today, Todd Gitlin writes an entire anti-WikiLeaks column that is based on an absolute factual falsehood. Anyone listening to most media accounts would believe that WikiLeaks has indiscriminately published all 250,000 of the diplomatic cables it possesses, and Gitlin — in the course of denouncing Julian Assange — bolsters this falsehood: “Wikileaks’s huge data dump, including the names of agents and recent diplomatic cables, is indiscriminate” and Assange is “fighting for a world of total transparency.”
The reality is the exact opposite — literally — of what Gitlin told TNR readers.

WikiLeaks is nog nooit van iets beschuldigd.
WikiLeaks-oprichter Julian Assange wel, van verkrachting en sexuele intimidatie in Zweden. Pas na de publicatie van de geheime documenten op zijn site WikiLeaks overigens.
Volgens Glenn Greenwald zal het heel moeilijk zijn om Julian Assange voor WikiLeaks te veroordelen. Misschien daarom dat hij zich vrijwillig gaat melden bij de politie in Groot-Brittannië om vragen te beantwoorden over de beschuldigingen van verkrachting. Assange zou zich ophouden in het Venrenigd Koninkrijk. Het eerste internationale opsporingsbevel van Interpol bevatte volgens de Britse politie te weinig informatie om in actie te komen tegen Assange. Vandaar dat Stockholm met een nieuw bevel kwam. Verder is vandaag bekend geworden dat de Zwitserse bankrekening van Assange is geblokkeerd.

WikiLeaks has never been charged with a crime, let alone indicted for one or convicted of one. A consensus of legal experts agree that prosecuting the organization or Julian Assange for any of its leaks would be difficult in the extreme. WikiLeaks gaat voortdurend offline vanwege de aanhoudende druk van Amerikaanse autoriteiten en door hackers die de servers waarop WikiLeaks wordt gestald belagen. Op dit moment zou WikiLeaks hier te zien zijn.

De Nederlandse journalist Henk van Ess, voorzitter van de VVOJ (Vereniging van Onderzoeksjournalisten), heeft een search-engine gemaakt om in de WikiLeaks-documenten te kunnen zoeken.
We hopen maar voor Van Ess dat Rechts Amerika er niet in zal slagen om WikiLeaks tot terroristische organisatie te verklaren. Want dan komt ook hij op de ‘most wanted list’ van Interpol te staan. Voorlopig zou ik reizen naar Amerika maar even uitstellen als ik Van Ess was, of een van zijn medebestuursleden.

Computerworld - A Dutch journalist on Thursday announced the launch of a new search engine that indexes the content of all U.S. State Department cables published so far by WikiLeaks.

Inderdaad, ik ken iemand met Alzheimer. Mijn vader heeft het al een aantal jaren. Eerlijk gezegd is het de ziekte die ik het meest vrees zelf ooit te krijgen. Ik vind humor een middel om de ellende te relativeren en de angst te reduceren.
Als anderen daaraan aanstoot nemen, dan spijt mij dat.
Glenn Beck heeft een show op Fox News die dagelijks pure haat de ether in stuurt. Zo groot is zijn invloed dat een aantal recente moorden in de VS geinspireerd lijkt door deze gevaarlijke dwaas. Maar nu is Beck wellicht te ver gegaan. Hij heeft de Joodse gemeenschap tegen zich in het harnas gejaagd door filantroop George Soros aan te vallen.
Waarom?
Niet omdat Soros een kapitalist is maar omdat hij een progressieve kapitalist is. Iemand die door hard, intelligent werken miljardair is geworden maar toch best bereid is wat belasting te betalen. Iemand die begrijpt dat als het de hele gemeenschap beter gaat, uiteindelijk iedereen profiteert. Kortom: iemand die gehaat wordt door domme egoisten als Glenn Beck.
George Soros heeft WW II overleeft in Hongarije omdat zijn vader hem als kind onderbracht bij een katholieke familie. Zijn stiefvader was betrokken bij de confiscatie van Joodse tegoeden en George ging op zijn tochten met hem mee. Volgens Beck heeft Soros dus joden aangegeven bij de Nazi’s. Of nee, Glenn weet het altijd nog treffender te zeggen: George Soros heeft joden de dood ingestuurd.
Later in zijn programma refereerde Beck aan een uitspraak van de Maleisische ex-premier Mahathir die Soros een ‘gewetenloze profiteur’ noemde. Nu is Mahathir een anti-semiet van het zuiverste water die onder meer de val van de Aziatische valuta in de vorige eeuw aan een Joods complot toeschreef. Toen JdeW eens een artikel wijdde aan die kant van Mahathir werd onmiddelijk de hoofdredacteur van zijn krant op het matje geroepen bij de Maleisische ambassadeur in Nederland. Sindsdien heb ik in dat land nooit meer een functionaris te spreken gekregen. Niet dat ze iets te zeggen hebben overigens.
Glenn Beck vond een quote van die Mahathir dus relevant. Ook haalde Beck iemand in Thailand aan die Soros een ‘economische oorlogsmisdadiger’ noemde die ’sucks the blood from the people’.
Ziet u het? Zo werkt de manipulator Glenn Beck.
Toen: een kind dat ’Joden naar concentratiekampen stuurde’. Nu ‘oorlogsmisdadger’ en ‘bloedzuiger’. JdeW heeft vanaf het begin maar een ding van deze man gevonden en dat wordt alleen maar erger. Glenn Beck is puur slecht.
Yesterday MSNBC declared that it has suspended progressive host Keith Olbermann indefnitely without pay because he violated NBC’s ethics rules by donating to Democratic candidates for Congress. That’s remarkable since conservative host Joe Scarborough has donated to Republicans but has never been disciplined. Moreover, Gawker showed that MSNBC has been exempt from the formal NBC ethics rules for years. It is still a mystery why MSNBC selectively applied NBC’s ethics rules to Olbermann. De Amerikaanse president Barack Obama heeft gebeld met premier Mark Rutte. Premier Rutte nam de felicitaties in ontvangst voor zijn aantreden als premier van Nederland. De premier condoleerde de president met zijn grote verlies. Daarop verklaarde de president veel waarde te hechten aan de hulp van de premier.
Te weten drie Britten, een Fransman, een Duitser en een dronken Pool (mogelijkverdwaald). Verder bestond de demonstratie van het European Freedom Initiative (EFI) uiteen tiental Nederlanders.
Er was meer pers en politie. Gezellig werd het pas toen een dertigtal Ajax-supporters langs kwam.

New Hampshire Union Leader - “This newspaper has never published wedding or engagement announcements from homosexual couples. It would be hypocritical of us to do so, given our belief that marriage is and needs to remain a social and civil structure between men and women and our opposition to the recent state law legalizing gay marriage.”
ThisJustIn - Greg Gould and Aurelio Tine say they just wanted to share their wedding plans. So they went one of the largest papers in New Hampshire, where gay marriage is legal and generally accepted, to work up a wedding announcement. De opmerking van Bill O’Reilly - Muslims killed us on 9/11 - blijft tot slachtoffers leiden. Nu is journalist Juan Williams, die bij Fox News de zogenaamd liberale stem vertegenwoordigd, ontslagen door de nationale radio NPR News omdat hij in de tv-show van Bill O’Reilly zei dat als hij nerveus wordt als hij “mensen in het vliegtuig ziet stappen in moslim kleren, die zich allereerst als moslim identificeren.”
Glenn Greenwald gaat er vandaag verder op door.
I’m always amazed when I receive e-mails from people telling me that I fail to understand how Islam is a uniquely violent, supremely expansionist culture that is intrinsically menacing. The United States is a country with a massive military and nuclear stockpile, that invaded and has occupied two Muslim countries for almost a full decade, that regularly bombs and drones several others, that currently is threatening to attack one of the largest Muslim countries in the world, that imposed a sanctions regime that killed hundreds of thousands of Muslim children, that slaughters innocent people on a virtually daily basis, that has interfered in and controlled countries around the world since at least the middle of the last century, that has spent decades arming and protecting every Israeli war with its Muslim neighbors and enabling a four-decade-long brutal occupation, and that erected a worldwide regime of torture, abduction and lawless detention, much of which still endures. Those are just facts.
I’m still not quite over the most disgusting part of the Juan Williams spectacle yesterday: watching the very same people (on the Right and in the media) who remained silent about or vocally cheered on the viewpoint-based firings of Octavia Nasr, Helen Thomas, Rick Sanchez, Eason Jordan, Peter Arnett, Phil Donahue, Ashleigh Banfield, Bill Maher, Ward Churchill, Chas Freeman, Van Jones and so many others, spend all day yesterday wrapping themselves in the flag of “free expression!!!” and screeching about the perils and evils of firing journalists for expressing certain viewpoints. Even for someone who expects huge doses of principle-free hypocrisy — as I do — that behavior is really something to behold. And anyone doubting that there is a double standard when it comes to anti-Muslim speech should just compare the wailing backlash from most quarters over Williams’ firing to the muted acquiescence or widespread approval of those other firings.

Weet u het nog Julian Assange. de oprichter van Wikileaks, zette in juli van dit jaar meer dan 90.000 geheime documenten van het Amerikaanse leger online. De stukken gaan over de Amerikaanse inzet in Afghanistan tussen 2004 en 2009 en zouden volgens klokkenluider Assange veel tot nog toe niet-gemelde incidenten bevatten. De Amerikaanse regering reageerde door te zeggen dat hij het bloed aan zijn handen zou hebben van jonge soldaten of Afghaanse families, anderen nomden hem een moordenaar van Amerikaanse soldaten enAfghanen en in Zweden werd een onderzoek naar een mogelijke verkrachting door Assange heropend.
Wat was er nu allemaal van waar, vraagt Glenn Greenwald zich af.
Let’s repeat that. Despite Gates’ ongoing assertion that “the initial assessment in no way discounts the risk to national security” and that “there is still concern Afghans named in the published documents could be retaliated against by the Taliban,” even the DoD and NATO admit that the WikiLeaks release “did not disclose any sensitive intelligence sources or methods” and that “there has not been a single case of Afghans needing protection or to be moved because of the leak.” Nonetheless, the accusation that WikiLeaks and Assange have “blood on their hands” was — as intended — trumpeted around the world for weeks without much question or challenge.
This is how the U.S. government and American media jointly disseminate propaganda: in the immediate wake of some newsworthy War on Terror event, U.S. Government officials (usually anonymous) make wild and reckless — though unverifiable — claims. The U.S. media mindlessly trumpets them around the world without question or challenge. Those claims become consecrated as widely accepted fact. And then weeks, months or years later, those claims get quietly exposed as being utter falsehoods, by which point it does not matter, because the goal is already well-achieved: the falsehoods are ingrained as accepted truth. Heel graag steken wij de gek aan met gelovigen waar dan ook ter wereld. Of het nu christenen, moslims, boedhisten, paranormaal begaafden, neocons of wat dan ook zijn.
JdeW heeft daarbij ook geen enkel probleem met stereotypering - ik denk hierbij ook even aan vogelmans ‘geile moslima’ hikje - als het:
1. geestig is,
2. duidelijk is dat het om een overdrijving gaat,
3. en niet iedereen het al heeft gedaan.
Nu hier het werkelijke verhaal over het ongeluk met de Airbus 340-600 (niet de 380-800, dus niet ’s werelds grootste vliegtuig). Zie het stuk op drasties hierboven. Het ongeluk vond plaats in 2007 en het Airbus-rapport is van eind 2008.

A brand new Airbus A340-600 aircraft was badly damaged when it ran through a blast barrier at the Airbus Saint-Martin facility at Toulouse, France. There were no fatalities, but five people were injured. The accident happened late on the afternoon of November 15, 2007.
The aircraft, which was painted in Etihad Airways livery, was undergoing pre-delivery tests on the ground at the Airbus facility at the time of the accident.
