Spring Wood: Dutch Designer Invents Flexible Wood
Big Think - The foremost quality that makes wood wood, both as a material and as a metaphor, is its inflexible rigidity. Dutch designer Carolien Laro, however, has challenged this age-old conception with Spring Wood – a series of furniture made of solid wood yet with flexible seating surfaces.
The flexibility is achieved by cutting meticulously engineered mesh-like slits into the solid wood tops. Each pliable wooden seat requires requires 480 CNC-milled cuts, manufactured by Dutch woodworking studio Ritmeester, and the original concept cost Laro 600 hours of prototyping. whole story

Ook drasties feliciteert bij dezen de heer Volkert Engelsman die niet alleen terecht maar zeker ook verdiend de onderscheiding heeft gekregen voor zijn tomeloze promotie van AGF wereldwijd.

Days after a number of dead birds appeared to fall from the sky in America a similar event has happened in Sweden. Tests are being carried out in a bid to find out what happened. Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, residents of Falkping, southeast of Skvde in southern Sweden, found 50 to 100 jackdaws lying in the street.

Voor een meisje - eet geitekaas, groente en rijst. Voor een jongetje - aardappels en bananen. Hier moet echt even kansberekening op los gelaten worden. Maar die verschillen lijken me wel significant. Verbazend.
Dus er zijn ook significante verschillen tussen landen waar veel en weinig groente wordt gegeten? Ik bedoel hoeveel groente eten de eskimo’s? Vergeleken met bijvoorbeeld de Italianen?

Green diets for daughters, bananas and potatoes for sons?
The Dutch study asked 32 women who already had boys to try a special “little girl diet” high in calcium and magnesium.
This meant eating foods like goat’s cheese salad, vegetable stew and rice pudding. Foods like potatoes and bananas, which have high levels of potassium, that is believed to lead to boys, were restricted.

Mario kreeg als eerste in Nederland de prijzen te zien van deze spectaculaire groene auto. Verderop de prijslijst. De goedkoopste Fisker Karma EcoStandard gaat 85.500,- kosten.
Het is een auto die de eerste 80 km geheel op electricteit kan rijden, waarvan een deel vanwege het zonnepaneel in het dak helemaal gratis.
Hoeveel meter zou dat zijn?
Voor de rest van het 480 km bereik wordt benzine omgezet in electricteit.

Oil is back above $90 a barrel. Copper and cotton have hit record highs. Wheat and corn prices are way up. Over all, world commodity prices have risen by a quarter in the past six months.
So what’s the meaning of this surge?
Is it speculation run amok? Is it the result of excessive money creation, a harbinger of runaway inflation just around the corner? No and no.
What the commodity markets are telling us is that we’re living in a finite world, in which the rapid growth of emerging economies is placing pressure on limited supplies of raw materials, pushing up their prices. And America is, for the most part, just a bystander in this story. (Paul Krugman, New York Times)

In the whole interview not one word about the pollution of the water and the coasts, the ecological devastation or even the eleven men who died during that “tremendous” occasion.
Uw groenteboer heeft 100 kilo komkommers die hij ’s ochtends buiten zet. De komkommers bestaan voor 99 procent uit water. Hij verkoopt er die dag niet een. Op het eind van de dag zijn de komkommers wat uitgedroogd. Ze bestaan dan nog maar voor 98 procent uit water. Hoeveel kilo komkommers heeft de groenteboer over?
Wat is hier gebeurd? Een raar verhaal. Volgens het IPPMedia in Tanzania is het Nederlandse bedrijf Bioshape Tanzania, dat biodiesel zou gaan produceren van jatropha in Tanzania, er mee opgehouden. Zonder duidelijke opgave van reden. Hetpersoneel zou al een jaar lang niet zijn uitbetaald en heeft daarom de tractoren in beslag genomen.
Was het de droogte?
Het bedrijf zou van Cor Vaes en Wil Hermans zijn. Hoewel het Nederlandse moederbedrijf in surseance van betaling is, zegt Vaes in een ander artikel dat het bedrijf in Tanzania op het punt staat verder te gaan.
Opvallend is dat ook vakgroep Energy Science van de Universiteit Utrecht er bij betrokken is. Twee studenten doen onderzoek naar het succes van de teelt van jatropha voor biodiesel in Tanzania - ’Socio economic impacts of Jatropha production in Tanzania’.
Master Thesis - Scenario analysis will be carried out in which the future impacts will be evaluated. Land ownership and land use is particularly relevant for the socio-economic performance of Jatropha production in the Tanzanian context, but also for the environmental performance (GHG balance and biodiversity impacts). Also the use of water, if applicable, should be investigated, as this is often a crucial limiting factor in Tanzania.

Hundred jobless as Dutch firm suspends jatropha production

Motorship - Damen Shipyards has announced that it has been tasked with developing a new environmentally friendly ferry design for the Dutch shipping company Rederij Doeksen, which operates passenger and car ferries between Harlingen and the Dutch Wadden islands.
Damen says that this will be the first time it has specifically designed a ferry aiming at a sustainable solution, and this is the first ferry of this type for Doeksen. The vessel will be powered by LNG, a hybrid system using wind/solar energy and other alternative solutions, although the use of an environmentally-friendly diesel system is not being ruled out if this looks a better option. Big Oil and Big Coal have poured vast amounts of money into American politics to ensure that they don’t have to pay for the pollution they’re responsible for. Fossil fuel-burning industries like Peabody and Koch Industries have funded a vast network of “libertarian” and “conservative” front groups to spread the lies that climate change isn’t real and that regulations on pollution destroy the economy. U weet het: vroeger was alles beter.
Zo was het per ordonnantie van 1738 in beide Oldambten in de provincie Groningen verboden om als er sneeuw lag op hazen te jagen. Nu is blijkbaar niet meer zo en Harry Perton van Gelkhinge vindt het getuigen van een ongelooflijke lafheid.

Nu de grote autofabrikanten zich echt met de productie van een electrische auto gaan bemoeien, gaat het vast snel. Deze nieuwe geheel electrische Nissan Leaf kost in Amerika door subsidie van de Obama-regering maar 20.000 dollar (15.000 euro). JdeW gaat hem proberen.
The fully electric, low priced Nissan Leaf went on sale yesterday. Olivier Chalouhi of Redwood City in Silicon Valley was the first buyer. The vehicle was priced at $33,500, but dropped to $20,000 after federal and state rebates. The Leaves, if you will, currently on sale now are made in Nissan’s factory in Oppama, Japan. Thanks to the Obama Administration and a $1.4 billion Energy Department loan, in 2012 the Leaf will be made at Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. 1300 jobs are expected.
