In de nacht van zaterdag op zondag werd Ramirezi om een uur of drie wakker gemaakt door zijn vrouw. Ze fluisterde iets in het oor van de bioloog en fotograaf:

‘Ik hoor mannen praten beneden’, fluisterde ze angstig in mijn oor. Dat leek mij niet zo’n probleem, waarschijnlijk Ramizoon die nog even de net genoten avond stappen evalueerde met een vriend. Maar die mogelijkheid hielp mijn vrouw snel uit de wereld; Ramizoon was een uur eerder al thuis gekomen.

Nu kreeg ik het toch ook warm. Vorig jaar was er nog ingebroken bij de buren, zouden wij nu aan de beurt zijn? Ik haalde mijn inbreker-verwijder-apparaat onder het bed vandaan. Illegaal, langwerpig en zwaar.

ScienceDaily - Variations in atmosphere carbon dioxide around 40 million years ago were tightly coupled to changes in global temperature, according to new findings published in the journal Science. The study was led by scientists at Utrecht University, working with colleagues at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and the University of Southampton.
The researchers are Peter Bijl, Alexander Houben, Appy Sluijs, Henk Brinkhuis, Gert-Jan Reichart (Utrecht University), Jaap Sinninghe Damsté and Stefan Schouten (NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research) and Steven Bohaty (SOES). The research was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Utrecht University and Statoil, and used samples and data provided by the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP).

Science Daily: At the current pace of research and development, global oil will run out 90 years before replacement technologies are ready, says a new University of California, Davis, study based on stock market expectations. The forecast was published online on Nov. 8 in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. It is based on the theory that long-term investors are good predictors of whether and when new energy technologies will become commonplace.
“Our results suggest it will take a long time before renewable replacement fuels can be self-sustaining, at least from a market perspective,” said study author Debbie Niemeier, a UC Davis professor of civil and environmental engineering.

Eerlijk gezegd weet ik ondanks de weer haarscherpe foto’s nog niet wat die vogels precies aantrekt tot Ramirezi’s tuin: Appeltjes, rode bessen, zwarte bessen, kruisbessen, druifbessen, kersen, stoofpeertjes?

Ramirezi: Als je naar deze foto’s kijkt dan is al snel duidelijk wat mijn vogelmagneet is. Je zou er appelig van gaan kijken.
De vogelmagneet staat in de voortuin en de kamer van onze huisnatuurfotograaf Tom kijkt er vanaf de eerste verdieping precies op uit. Lekker makkelijk fotograferen, je hoeft er niet uren voor in de kou te gaan liggen.

Wist u dat er twaalf miljoen dollar op het hoofd van de Amerikaanse klimatoloog Michael Mann staat. Dat omdat hij de hockeystick-grafiek samenstelde waarin het temparatuurverloop van de laatste duizend jaar is gereconstrueerd. De grafiek geeft, op basis van door iedereen te controleren gegevens, weer dat de aarde opwarmt. Het bedrag is uitgeloofd voor degene die kan bewijzen dat Mann onderzoeksgeld op oneigenlijke wijze heeft gebruikt. Vindt u het raar dat Mann de verdenking uitspreekt dat Amerikanen op hoog niveau het debat over het klimaat manipuleren?
Eerder werden emails van hem gehacked. Het inbreken in computers en uitloven van geld geeft aan hoe rechts Amerika te werk gaat in het klimaatdebat: met geld en geweld. Klimatologen gaan zich nu organiseren tegen de (in)directe bedreigingen van door Big Oil en Big Coal gefinancierde bullies.

Nederlanders staan per werkdag gemiddeld veertien minuten in de file, dus zeven minuten heen en zeven minuten terug. En daar is niets aan te doen. De enige structurele oplossing van het fileprobleem is dat Nederlanders gewoon stoppen met werken.
De Nederlandse Randstad, Utrecht en Arnhem horen tot de meest verstopte gebieden van Europa. Alleen met Brussel is het nog erger gesteld.
Automobilisten staan in Nederland per jaar 65 uur in de file. Het slechtste tijdstip om de snelweg op te gaan is donderdagochtend tussen 8 en 9 uur. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Inrix, een bedrijf dat systemen voor verkeersinformatie levert.

Dutch city Utrecht wastes most time in traffic

Euronews - US traffic company INRIX found that in Europe Monday rush hour in Brussels is the worst place to be. But it said the Dutch city of Utrecht clocks in at 75 wasted traffic hours per year, followed closely by Manchester, then Paris and Dutch bottleneck Arnhem. Europe’s ‘capital’, Brussels, adds 65 hours’ per year of crawling time to the daily commute, versus London’s 54 or Berlin’s 35.

California voters “rejected a ballot initiative on Tuesday that would have legalized marijuana for recreational use.” The initiative, known as Proposition 19, got 45.3 percent of the vote with 57 percent of precincts reporting.

California’s Proposition 23, which was backed by a variety of energy interests and would’ve disabled the state’s landmark climate change law, was soundly defeated. Voters also passed Proposition 25, which would allow a legislative majority in the state capital to pass budgets with a majority vote.

Halliburton (the company once led by Dick Cheney) and BP knew that the Deepwater Horizon rig was facing serious structural problems before the April 20 blowout, according to the presidential commission investigating the accident. The commission staff determined that Halliburton conducted tests indicating that the cement at the rig was not up to industry standards, but did not take action.

Na een week op het eiland Penang te hebben doorgebracht ben ik in een dag van Penang naar Taiping gefietst, gedeeltelijk door mooie vegetatie en gedeeltelijk door eentonige palmolieplantages. Na de hitte van de dag en de saaie rechte wegen in de vlakte is binnenkomen in Taiping een complete verrassing. Groene heuvels en de koelte van een voorbije regenbui. Ik fietste langs een groot terras vol met drinkende mannen van Indiase afkomst en herkende ook de rugzaktoeristen, waarvan ik ’s-ochtend in het guesthouse afscheid had genomen.
Ik was natuurlijk met een natte vinger te lijmen.
Taiping is groot geworden door de aanwezigheid van tinmijnen en daaraan dankt de stad ook een prachtig stadspark met grote waterpartijen en een enorme zoo. Dat park is aangelegd op de plaats van de voormalige tinertsgroeve en het is ongelooflijk groen. Dat heeft weer te maken met het feit dat in Maleisie nergens meer regen valt dan in Taiping. Niet dat het hier de hele dag regent, de regen valt meestal in de namiddag en in de nacht en die extreme regenval is vermoedelijk te danken aan het feit, dat de stad aan de voet van een 1500 meter hoge berg ligt.

Remember the proposal of Republican Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal to deal with the BP oilspill? Building sand berms to stop the flow of oil from the leaking well?
Well, they did build them and lets have a look how it worked:

So far, the berms have captured only 1,000 barrels of oil, according to official estimates, compared with the nearly five million barrels believed to have spewed from the BP well over all. By contrast, more than 800,000 barrels of oil were captured by BP at the wellhead, and roughly 270,000 barrels of oil were burned off by Coast Guard vessels offshore. Skimming operations, meanwhile, recovered at least 34 million gallons of oil-water mixture.

The cost of Bobby’s dumb idea? $240 million so far with $120 million more to go. That is a cost of $360,000 per barrel of oil! Talk about government waste! I’ll guarantee you this: before this thing is done, we’re going to find out that Bobby’s idiotic idea actually ended up lining the pockets of one of his biggest political contributors.

This is the way democracy works nowadays in the United States of America. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is spending an unprecedented $75 million on advertisements to unseat progressives from Congress. All in defense of the agenda of Big Oil.
An investigation from ThinkProgress has learned the rightwing Chamber’s donors. They include multinational oil corporations, and even oil companies owned by the Kingdom of Bahrain. The oil-fueled Chamber has hammered candidates who voted to limit our dependence on oil, falsely claiming they supported a “job-killing energy tax” (like Rep. IndyPosted, Mumbai - An extremely rare albino seal has been admitted to the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre Lenie ‘t Hart (SRRC ) in Holland for treatment of a very serious lung infection. The SRRC is a Dutch veterinary hospital that treats and releases seals that have fallen ill rather than euthanizing them. The centre has reportedly only treated 6 such seals in the last 40 years. The last albino seal was treated at the centre 10 years ago.
The albino baby seal will be quarantined and treated at the Dutch facility over the next few months. After that time it will be released back into its natural habitat in the North Sea.
