The Netherlands is a relatively small country, but with a glorious past as one of the great colonial powers. It has ruled territories in the Americas, Africa and Asia and this has influenced the mindset of its people. There are many typically Dutch characteristics that distinguish them from us more than they bring us closer.
The entire Dutch history is marked by their struggle against the sea, and the conquest of land. This makes the Dutch appreciative of their land, and particularly seriously concerned about environmental protection and about the lack of pollution of nature and cities. Dutch people are very well organized in everything they undertake. They are characterized by accuracy and compliance with the rules and laws.
Dutch sagacity is also a well known personal trait; it stems from their acumen for commerce - for centuries they dominated European trade and the imports from other continents. Very distinct is the Dutch cuisine, which lacks considerably in variation, taste and creativity as compared with the French and Italian. Very different, of course, is the Dutch landscape - from the name of the country, the Netherlands shows that it is a low land, as flat as a platter.
The history of our peoples is very different to be able to easily find similarities.
As to Belgium, then there the proximity is more tangible. This can be explained by our similar historical destiny. Despite their common spoken language, and the fact that through most of history they have been one country, the Dutch and the Belgians today have a very different mentality.

Sky News - He’s bigger than Coldplay and Britney Spears, and now finally Dutch violin star Andre Rieu has waltzed his way to success on these shores.
The 60-year-old is a massive star elsewhere in the world, selling out stadiums to become the sixth highest grossing live act of 2009 - beating Britney, Chris Martin and co, Elton John and Tina Turner - but in the UK he’s a virtual unknown.
Now, though, Rieu is sitting in the top 10 of the UK album chart with Forever Vienna, an impressive feat for a recording of traditional waltzes. “There’s a big audience out there who loves our music,” Rieu told Sky News as he toasted his new success.

In Amerika is een rechtzaak bezig of homo’s en lesbienne’s uitgesloten mogen worden van het huwelijk. Twee weken lang vinden er hoorzittingen plaats in de Supreme Court van Californië waar besloten wordt of twee homosexuele paren mogen trouwen. Een recht dat door middel van Proposition 8 in Californië is afgenomen.
Aan het woord is hier de Chinese Amerikaan Dr. William Tam die fel tegen het same-sex huwelijk is. Hij wordt ondervraagd door David Boies. En zoals zo vaak komt ook deze Amerikaanse ‘bigot’ met het verdorven Nederland op de proppen om zijn zaak te bewijzen. Volgens Tam is in Nederland na het accepteren van same-sex huwelijken, vervolgens ook incest en polygamie toegestaan.

Tam: Same sex marriage may not have led to legalization of incest and polygamy, but it happened.

T: I found it on the Internet. I did not write this that polygamy was legalized in 2005.
B: You put it out there to convince people to vote for Prop. 8. Did you ever look up the law?
T: Yes, there was different documents that shows that’s true.
B: So after Netherlands legalized same sex marriage, legalized polygamy and incest.
T: I’m not sure about incest. That may have been legal before same sex marriage passed.
B: If that’s the case, then it has nothing to do with same sex marriage.
T: Yes, but it shows that if countries are loose with sex it leads to this…

Das Besondere an dem Elfstedentocht sind jedoch nicht nur die Grachten, das Eis, die zauberhaften Städte, sondern der Sieger wird als Nationalheld der Niederlande gefeiert und der Stein der Sieger wird dann auch seinen Namen für alle Ewigkeit tragen. Seit 1909 wurde das offizielle Elfstedentocht nur 15 Mal ausgetragen. Nach Angaben der entsprechenden Webseite beträgt die durchschnittliche Dicke des Eises nur 6 cm, gefordert werden 15 cm. Nur so kann die Sicherheit dieses spektakulären Rennens in Friesland ein erfolgreiches Event der Niederlande werden.[..]

Die Auflagen für das Durchführen der Elfstedentocht sind gnadenlos und hart. Aber sie dienen der Sicherheit und noch erreichen nicht alle Kanäle und Grachten die geforderte Eisdicke. President Obama today spent 90 minutes taking questions from the House GOP Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. And Obama not only took their tough questions, but answered them brilliantly. He was tough, forcing the GOP to confront the facts instead of their make-believe Fox News reality. In fact, to get a sense of just how effective President Obama was, Fox “News” cut off the Q&A session before it ended (CNN and MSNBC both carried the full event live).

U.S. gross domestic product grew 5.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to an estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The figure surpassed the 4.8 percent rise that economists were expecting. It’s the the best performance since the third quarter of 2003.

In het bejaardenhuis waar ik werk zei Jannie, een vrouw van in de tachtig die nog helemaal bij is, dat ik er moe uitzag. “Dat kan kloppen”, zei ik, “fulltime werken, thuis de huishouding en twee kinderen opvoeden… het valt niet altijd mee.”
“Ik begrijp wat je bedoeld”, zei ze. “Toen ik twee kinderen had, dacht ik ook dat ik het zwaar had. Ik moest ons water bij de pomp halen, waste met de hand, hakte zelf hout voor de kachel, bakte ons eigen brood, verzorgde de groentetuin en…”
Jannie stopte en keek me aan. “Pas toen ik mijn achtste kind kreeg, begreep ik dat twee best meeviel.”

Nu, anderhalf jaar later, kan Ruud Gullit eindelijk praten over de verschrikkelijke dingen die hem bij Los Angeles Galaxy zijn overkomen. De belangrijkste reden waarom hij het in Amerika maar zeven maanden uithield als toptrainer (ook bij Newcastle, Chelsea en Feyenoord verdween hij voortijdig) blijkt te zijn dat Amerikanen het spelletje niet snappen. Drasties heeft het nog even bij Ruud zelf gecheckt. Dus kunnen we het hier keihard opschrijven: Ruud Gullit snapt het spelletje wel!
Niet alleen snappen Amerikanen het niet, ze hebben zelfs helemaal geen belangstelling voor voetbal en nog erger… voetbaltrainers. Gullit, die het wk gaat doen voor de zender ESPN, kan er ook nu nog slechts met moeite over praten: “Niemand praat over voetbal, geen tv, je ziet het nergens.” Hij heeft er nog altijd nachtmerries van. “Als niemand over je praat, is het net alsof je niet bestaat.”
Er is een andere zaak die Gullit nog altijd erg hoog zit: de regels. Van de Amerikaanse voetbalcompetitie MLS dus. Een leek zou zeggen, je gaat ergens werken, je bekijkt een keer wat er wel en niet kan (salarycap, beperkte transfers) en dat is dat. Maar zo zit de toptrainer Gullit niet in elkaar. “Mijn manier van werken, botste met de MLS-regels.” En niet één keer, nee, vele maken want om onverklaarbare redenen veranderden de regels niet. Gullit’s manier van werken, het is in diverse landen bekend, is om iedere speler te kopen die een keer een goede dag heeft. Dat mag in de MLS niet.
Dat die regel voordelen heeft, valt overigens te zien bij Feyenoord waar ze nog altijd bezig zijn door Gullit aangeschafte mislukte spelers te slijten.
Ook veel moeite had Gullit met … geld. Bij Galaxy verdiende hij $2 miljoen per jaar, veel meer dan anderen in de competitie en dat gaf scheve ogen. “Maar je denkt toch niet dat ik voor normale bedragen helemaal naar Los Angeles ga trekken.”
Drasties vroeg Gullit waarom niet eigenlijk? Wel, de familie Gullit was gevestigd in Hollywood, een plaats die bekend staat om een totaal gebrek aan Westerse voorzieningen, een allerbelabberdst klimaat en een algeheel gebrek aan amusement. Oftewel, ze moesten kolen stoken, hadden het altijd koud en verveelden zich kapot. De familie Gullit was dan ook maar wat blij dat ze weer hun appartement in de Bijlmer konden betrekken.
