Nu, anderhalf jaar later, kan Ruud Gullit eindelijk praten over de verschrikkelijke dingen die hem bij Los Angeles Galaxy zijn overkomen. De belangrijkste reden waarom hij het in Amerika maar zeven maanden uithield als toptrainer (ook bij Newcastle, Chelsea en Feyenoord verdween hij voortijdig) blijkt te zijn dat Amerikanen het spelletje niet snappen. Drasties heeft het nog even bij Ruud zelf gecheckt. Dus kunnen we het hier keihard opschrijven: Ruud Gullit snapt het spelletje wel!
Niet alleen snappen Amerikanen het niet, ze hebben zelfs helemaal geen belangstelling voor voetbal en nog erger… voetbaltrainers. Gullit, die het wk gaat doen voor de zender ESPN, kan er ook nu nog slechts met moeite over praten: “Niemand praat over voetbal, geen tv, je ziet het nergens.” Hij heeft er nog altijd nachtmerries van. “Als niemand over je praat, is het net alsof je niet bestaat.”
Er is een andere zaak die Gullit nog altijd erg hoog zit: de regels. Van de Amerikaanse voetbalcompetitie MLS dus. Een leek zou zeggen, je gaat ergens werken, je bekijkt een keer wat er wel en niet kan (salarycap, beperkte transfers) en dat is dat. Maar zo zit de toptrainer Gullit niet in elkaar. “Mijn manier van werken, botste met de MLS-regels.” En niet één keer, nee, vele maken want om onverklaarbare redenen veranderden de regels niet. Gullit’s manier van werken, het is in diverse landen bekend, is om iedere speler te kopen die een keer een goede dag heeft. Dat mag in de MLS niet.
Dat die regel voordelen heeft, valt overigens te zien bij Feyenoord waar ze nog altijd bezig zijn door Gullit aangeschafte mislukte spelers te slijten.
Ook veel moeite had Gullit met … geld. Bij Galaxy verdiende hij $2 miljoen per jaar, veel meer dan anderen in de competitie en dat gaf scheve ogen. “Maar je denkt toch niet dat ik voor normale bedragen helemaal naar Los Angeles ga trekken.”
Drasties vroeg Gullit waarom niet eigenlijk? Wel, de familie Gullit was gevestigd in Hollywood, een plaats die bekend staat om een totaal gebrek aan Westerse voorzieningen, een allerbelabberdst klimaat en een algeheel gebrek aan amusement. Oftewel, ze moesten kolen stoken, hadden het altijd koud en verveelden zich kapot. De familie Gullit was dan ook maar wat blij dat ze weer hun appartement in de Bijlmer konden betrekken.

Yes, everyone in the USA ruined Gullit’s chances to be successful as a coach because they didn’t pay enough attention to him, apparently.
“In LA, nobody is talking about football. No television stations. You see it nowhere,” Gullit said in a recent Associated Press interview.” read on>> “It’s difficult to swallow because you need that adrenaline to pump yourself up. If nobody talks about it, it’s almost like an enigma.” Ah, yes, American soccer is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, shrouded in mystery.
Actually, it’s much simpler than that - Gullit wasn’t a good coach because he didn’t want to spend enough time understanding the system of Major League Soccer and how to deal with the salary cap and other issues. He also couldn’t motivate the players he had to play well enough to win more games. Incidently, that was also his problem when his coaching tenure ended at Chelsea and at Newcastle, only there he didn’t bother to blame the country’s entire attitude towards the sport for his dismissal.

“For the amount of money that they normally pay, I don’t go from Europe all the way to live here. So therefore they need to find sponsors. But who knows Ruud Gullit in America? Who would pay that amount of money? And the moment that you find out nobody wants to pay that, that’s where all the trouble starts,” he said.
