Als we na de vakantie huiswaarts rijden, valt tegen de avond de eerste bui sinds weken. Op de autobaan verdicht het verkeer zich. De automobiliste voor ons doet haar mistlamp aan waardoor onze voorruit een hinderlijk mozaïek van rode regendruppels wordt. In mijzelf mopperend haal ik haar in.
Geconcentreerd op het verkeer en de spiegels tast ik op het dashboard naar het knopje van ons mistlicht om haar te seinen. Klik-klik. Klik. In de spiegel zie ik weinig respons. “Wat doe je toch?” vraagt mijn vriendin. Ik leg uit.
“Tja, alleen heb je nu drie keer de achterruitverwarming aangezet.”

Weeromstuit

De politie heeft veganist Peter Janssen opnieuw opgepakt voor verhoor. Nu vanwege de mysterieuze verdwijning van een varken. Peter Janssen - van beroep actievoerder ten behoeve van dieren - ontkent ten stelligste iets te maken te hebben met de verdwijning van het geslachtte varken van het zeventiende eeuwse schilderij van de Nederlander Egbert van der Poel. De politie is niet overtuigd.
De affaire kwam aan het licht toen directeur Zwart van het Calvin College het schilderij deze zomer naar kunsthersteller Barry Bauman in Chicago stuurde voor een schoonmaakbeurt. Bauman merkte dat een ladder op de linkerkant van het schilderij meerdere keren was overgeschilderd en dat de verf schilferde. Hij volgde het spoor en ontdekte een overgeschilderd geslacht varken.

Restorer finds hidden pig in 1600’s Dutch artist painting

A restorer has found a hidden image of a butchered pig in a 17th century Dutch painting owned by a Michigan college. Barn Interior, one of 16 paintings given to Calvin College two years ago, shows a woman and two children inside a barn. Now that the last of the great Kennedy’s is dead it’s time to embrace the real royalty in the United States. Jenna Bush is hired as a new NBC ”reporter” on The Today Show — at a time when every media outlet is firing and laying off real reporters. She’s hired because… because… she has ‘White House experience’. Don’t stop there NBC - the toilet cleaner has White House experience too.

Graag zou ik in staat zijn te verklaren hoe het kan dat je iemand als een vriendin ervaart die je nooit hebt gezien, nooit hebt gesproken en nooit hebt gehoord. Ik kan het niet. Toch is het zo. En JdeW is niet de enige die dat zo voelde bij Ruth die dit jaar - haar laatste jaar - vrijwel dagelijks aanwezig was op drasties. Er zijn meer mensen die geroerd en geraakt werden door Ruth in haar reacties en door de stukjes die ze schreef.
Misschien komt het doordat je alleen de geschreven taal hebt. Je kunt de rest van iemand invullen zoals je zelf wilt. Zoals we op drasties weten, kan dat tot mooie dingen leiden maar ook tot kwaadaardigheid. In de virtuele wereld zie je namelijk niet dat iets pijn doet. Om die reden vroeg ik haar - in onze persoonlijke email-uitwisseling - of ik iets mocht uitleggen over haar situatie. Ze was ernstig ziek. Dat wilde Ruth niet. Ze had geen problemen met de kritiek die er kwam op haar stukjes. Ze was dat stadium voorbij. Ze wilde het zelfs niet toen ze me mailde dat ze naar ‘de hospice ging voor het laatste stukkie’.
Ze ging en daarna werd het stil. Tot haar dochter ons dinsdag liet weten dat Ruth was overleden. Wat ze hier geschreven heeft, blijft bestaan. Zichtbaar voor iedereen.
Als aandenken aan die eerlijke, dappere vriend van ons in de virtuele wereld die drasties heet, hier enkele stukjes van Ruth.

Ik “leef” en lees nog steeds van tijd tot tijd met jullie mee, maar het gaat wel moeizaam. Hoop stiekem nog op een klein wondertje. Houd me “doodstil” (bizar woord in dit verband..) en hoop dat ze me vergeten. Net als vroeger, toen ik als klein kind niet naar bed wilde en hoopte dat m’n ouders me zouden vergeten.

U wist het misschien niet maar Nederland heeft bos. En dat bos staat volgens de wereldpers in de fik. Nee echt! De eerste helicopter met een emmer water is al gesignaleerd. Niet minder dan 320 bejaarden moesten worden geevacueerd. Niet moeilijk hoor. De brandweer heeft gewoon een nummer van Vader Abraham opgezet en daar gingen ze.

The Hague - About 320 people, many of them pensioners or guests at a luxury hotel were evacuated after a forest fire in Schoorl in northwestern Netherlands. Local official: ”Up till now, 320 people have been evacuated as a preventive measure given the large amount of smoke. They included about 50 residents of an old people’s home and guests from a luxury hotel. Several firefighters were at the scene, supported by a military helicopter equipped to carry water.

After Fox News star Glenn Beck accused President Obama of being a “racist” with a “deep-seated hatred for white people,” a drive by Color Of Change has convinced 46 companies to cancel their advertisements on his show. In response, Beck and FoxNews have launched increasingly vicious attacks on White House official Van Jones, who co-founded Color Of Change in 2005 following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

In a comically-entertaining segment with a psychiatrist yesterday, Beck complained about the things that “blogs and everything else” have been calling him. “I’m a freak show… hysterical… a shameless opportunist… I’m full of crap… spineless, coward, I love that… and I’m just a fear-mongering whatever,” Beck said.

To deal with the constant influx of criticisms, the psychiatrist’s advice for Beck was to take the perspective of “dealing with people who are addicted to drugs.” Beck agreed, arguing that “alcoholics and drug-addicts” will “save this country.”

MOYERS: I’d think it would be a tragedy beyond description for this young, bright, exciting President to be drawn into an endless war in the same way that the last young, bright, exciting President was drawn into – intervened in Vietnam. I was there when Kennedy chose to send advisers to Vietnam – and was there when LBJ escalated – they both acted from noble intentions – actually they did – they wanted to stop Communism in Asia and spread democracy – but the advisers soon became bombers and the bombers became grounds troops and pretty soon, it became a regional crusade – and 12 years later, billions of dollars, and millions of lives later, including 60,000 American troops – we lost – because the U.S. is not good at that sort of thing.
