Niet dat de bondskanselierin Merkel voor sancties is. Wel merkt ze op dat het jammer is dat de PVV betrokken is bij de Nederlandse regering.
In het jaar 2000 voerde de EU sancties in tegen Oostenrijk toen de partij van de rechts-radicale Jörg Haider deel uitmaakte van de Oostenrijkse regering. Die sancties waren on-Europees, meent Angela Merkel.

Berlin - Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel hat Bedauern über das Zustandekommen des niederländischen Kabinetts unter Einbeziehung von Geert Wilders und seiner rechten PVV bekundet.
Auf die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Berlin und Den Haag soll sich dies allerdings nicht auswirken.
Merkel erinnerte an die EU-Sanktionen gegen Österreich, als die FPÖ (Freiheitliche Partei Österreich) unter Jörg Haider 2000 Teil der Koalition wurde. “Wie man damals mit Österreich umgegangen ist, war nicht im Sinne der europäischen Idee,” so die Bundeskanzlerin.
Die SPD hat Merkel indes dazu aufgerufen sich von Bewegungen am rechten politischen Rand in anderen europäischen Ländern Abstand zu nehmen.

Dit gaat over de vraag of India één van de smerigste landen ter wereld is. Van alle (tientallen) landen waar JdeW is geweest is het antwoord volmondig: ja! India is een fascinerend land maar ook verreweg het smerigste. De armoede alleen kan niet alles verklaren want het is bijvoorbeeld veel viezer dan Thailand. Het moeten ook de huishoudelijke gewoontes van de Indiers zijn.
En eeuwenoude tradities!
Ik herinner dat ik in Varanasi op trappen aan de oever van de Ganghes over tientallen pakketjes kleren stapte. Het duurde even voor ik door had dat die pakketjes allemaal dode mensen waren. Wachtend op hun crematie op houtstapels aan de oever van de heilige rivier. Waar de familie was, werd mij nooit duidelijk. Direct na de crematie doken kinderen de as in op zoek naar gouden sieraden die aan een dode worden meegeven op weg naar het hiernamaals.
In de Ganges dreven verder half gecremeerde lijken op weg naar de zee. Dezelfde rivier waar dagelijks mensen zich in het heilige water onderdompelen om gezond te blijven.
Meer mensen denken er net zo over als de Nederlandse diplomaat Arnold Parzer (?) in 2006: “New Delhi is the most miserable place I have ever lived in.”

Indian Woman - Mumbai is one of the filthiest cities in the world. It is tough to walk without stepping on some shitty stuff or the other… Most Indians don’t understand what the fuss is all about. They are comfortable with all the filth around or have just become immune to the ugliness. We will stop being such a filthy nation the day we realize that filth is undesirable.

Crooks and Liars - As we were at his computer, finishing up the input of our transaction, I saw that Fox News was on his TV and I jokingly said, “Oh, you have Fox News on?” He said, “I didn’t put it on, but so what? What’s wrong with it?”
I said, “It’s a propaganda network.”
He asked, “People can tell what the truth is, so who cares even if there is only ten percent of the truth?”
I pointed out that for most people, it’s hard to know which ten percent is the truth. That was my first mistake. There were a few other customers behind me, but that didn’t faze the owner, as he then launched into a profanity-laced tirade against politicians and of course, the cancer of our society, the unions.

Republican Senator Jim DeMint made the extraordinary statement that every single piece of legislation in the Senate would be blocked by his office unless it had been preapproved by his own staffers. That means Tea Party favorite DeMint has essentially made a unilateral decision to end legislative activity in the Senate. Is that possible? Amazingly it is.

DeMint can get away with this stunt because the Senate’s rules are ripe for abuse. By exploiting the rules, DeMint can force up to 60 hours of uninterrupted debate before a final vote. Using this tactic, DeMint can require over two and a half years to deliberate just the 372 bills already passed by the House since August. There is simply not enough time to get more than a fraction of the Senate’s business done if a minority is determined to do everything they can to block progress. Regardless of national security interests, national emergencies, or really any matter confronted by Congress, DeMint wields ultimate power — while Cornyn and the GOP leadership is too afraid to stand up to him.

Delaware Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, Christine O’Donnell, said God wouldn’t release her from campaigning for Senate. The teabagster said that even as things looked the worst for her bid to win the Republican nomination God urged her to continue.
“God continued to strengthen and empower us,” O’Donnell said in an interview on the Christian Broadcasting Network. “Because you see that if it weren’t for faith, when all logic said it’s time to quit, we pursued, we marched on, because we knew God was not releasing us to quit.”

The Republican gubernatorial candidate for Maine, a favorite of tea partiers and a front-runner in the five-way race, regrets what he said Sunday, but has refused to offer a direct apology. To a small crowd in Brooksville, Paul LePage said:

“As your governor, you’re going to be seeing a lot of me on the front page, saying ‘Governor LePage tells Obama to go to hell’.”

Het lijkt er op dat de Obama-regering eindelijk actie gaat ondernemen tegen de mensen die gevangenen dood hebben gemarteld. Dat is goed want op dit moment bestaat elders in de wereld, vooral onder moslims, het rare idee dat de VS er andere rechtsregels op na houdt als het gaat om het beoordelen van de eigen burgers dan buitenlanders. For many people, one of the earliest and gravest disappointments in Barack Obama was his announcement that those who implemented a worldwide torture regime should not be punished in any way, because we must Look Forward, Not Backward. He even chose a General neck-deep in detainee abuse to lead his war in Afghanistan, and chose a Bush-era CIA official who endorsed many “enhanced interrogation techniques” as his top Terrorism adviser. Torture and other crimes was something to be forgiven and swept entirely under the rug. Obama now appears to view such matters differently… at least when the torturers are Iranian rather than American:

In South Africa, everything is political. Everything. Even if a play doesn’t deal with very obvious political or social issues, the spectres of apartheid, racism, HIV/Aids and poverty hover in the background. We can’t escape it. In Amsterdam, art can exist in a political vacuum. This idea was initially disappointing, but then became reassuring.

Colombiaanse autoriteiten hebben om de vingerafdrukken en foto’s van het gebit van Tanja Nijmeijer gevraagd. Om een dode vrouw in het basiskamp van de onlangs gedode leider van de FARC te identificeren. Tanja, alias ‘Eleen’, was de persoonlijke assistente van rebelcommandant Víctor Julio Suárez Rojas. alias ‘Mono JoJoy’. Hij en tientallen rebellen kwamen vorige week woensdag om bij een bombardement op hun kamp door het Colombiaanse leger.

Colombian helicopters retrieved eight male and three female bodies from the burned-out and heavily booby-trapped site, but Nijmeijer’s was reportedly not among them. “Many of the tunnels collapsed under the impact of the raid. Most of the bodies inside will never be recovered,” explains Liduine Zumpolle. “I don’t think we will hear from Tanja again. Except maybe when they find her body.”

Al Jazeera - A Dutch woman named the Netherlands’ “one and only jungle guerilla” is thought to have been killed in last Wednesday’s Colombian army raid on a Farc camp.
Thirty-two year old Tanja Nijmeijer, who is believed to have been working as a personal assistant to senior Farc commander Jorge Briceno, was the subject of a documentary and a book. CNN Politics - Fox News pushes “a point of view that I disagree with. It’s a point of view that I think is ultimately destructive for the long-term growth of a country that has a vibrant middle class and is competitive in the world,” Obama said.
“But as an economic enterprise, it’s been wildly successful. And I suspect that if you ask Mr. Murdoch what his number one concern is, it’s that Fox is very successful.”

Er is weer wat meer bekend over onze favoriete Republikeinse kandidaat voor de Amerikaanse senaat: Christine O’Donnel. U weet wel… de vrouw die de Tea Party vertegenwoordigt. Ze gelooft wel in heksen maar niet in evolutie.

Then there was her claim that she studied at the University of Oxford (and not the one in Mississippi), when it was actually a class offered through the Phoenix Institute, which had “merely rented space at Oxford.”

Het is moeilijk te geloven dat de Verenigde Staten van Amerika bij de tussentijdse verkiezingen in november de macht in de gekozen volksvertegenwoordiging terug zal geven aan de Republikeinen. Toch is dat heel goed mogelijk, als je de peilingen moet geloven. En dan ook nog aan een Grand Old Party (GOP) in een van haar meest primitieve vormen.
Republikeinen zijn behoorlijk opgefokt door de continue stroom van leugens van extreem rechts en gaan dus massaal stemmen. Een aanzienlijk percentage van hen dankzij Fox News et al zelfs tegen hun eigen belangen in. De aanhoudend slechte economie, die na vele jaren van desastreus Republikeins beleid aan de wortels is aangetast, helpt uiteraard niet mee.
En veel progressieven gaan niet stemen. Ze zijn kwaad op Barack Obama omdat hij zijn aandacht vooral heeft gericht op een paar gematigde Republikeinen, in plaats van te vechten voor de idealen van de mensen die op hem hebben gestemd.
En nu is de Obama-regering dus kwaad op de Democratische basis. Obama’s boodschap aan de progressieve kiezers lijkt te zijn: ‘Don’t be stupid, quit your bitching and vote for me.” In november zullen we zien of die oproep Democratische kiezers naar de stembus zal trekken. Glenn Greenwald ziet meer rare boodschappen van Obama.

David Dayen - I’ve never seen a politician run an election with the message “Don’t be stupid, quit your bitching and vote for me.” This goes orders of magnitude beyond “Here are the stakes, my opponent would vote against everything you care about.” That at least has a certain time-tested quality. That would make the election a choice and not a referendum. But “vote for me, you simpletons”? There’s a reason that strategy has never been employed: because it’s so insane to think that open berating would inspire a voter to action.

How the White House is enthusing it’s base

President Obama gave an interview to Rolling Stone and actually said this:

The idea that we’ve got a lack of enthusiasm in the Democratic base, that people are sitting on their hands complaining, is just irresponsible… If we want the kind of country that respects civil rights and civil liberties, we’d better fight in this election.

Wie heeft beweerd dat Zwitsers nooit lachen? Zie hier minister van Financiën Hans-Rudolf Merz die in het parlement een door een ambtenaar geschreven antwoord op Kamervragen voorleest. De ambtenaar (’Ik heb mijn best gedaan om een serieus antwoord voor te bereiden’) heeft ontslag genomen.
