Maarten Engwirda (D66) is een dapper man. Vijftien jaar was hij lid van de Europese Rekenkamer (27 leden) en nu hij een weekje weg is, heeft hij alle zaken eens op een rijtje gezet en komt hij met dit.

“Belangenbehartiging voor het eigen land door verschillende leden van de Rekenkamer. Hun redenering was: stel je voor dat de fout bestede bedragen bekend worden. Straks moet mijn land het nog terugbetalen ook.”

Dit gaat om miljoenen onterecht uitgekeerde subsidies op het gebied van zuivel en olijfolie aan landen als Frankrijk en Italië. En dit:

“Mijn toenmalige Italiaanse collega wilde de Rekenkamer het recht ontzeggen kritiek te uiten op het Italiaanse rechtssysteem dat de misstanden had moeten voorkomen. Terwijl dat systeem aan alle kanten faalde.”

Een onthutste minister Kees de Jager van Financien reageerde vandaag dat de situatie sindsdien wel sterk is verbeterd. Dat is knap aangezien Engwirda nog geen twee weken weg is bij de Rekenkamer.

Nederlanders zijn minder negatief over moslims dan Duitsers. Dat concludeert de Universiteit van Münster uit een peiling. In Duitsland zou ‘een rigide en intolerante houding tegenover andere geloven’ heersen, aldus de onderzoekers.
Van alle Duitsers vindt minder dan 5 procent dat de islam tolerant is. In Nederland, Denemarken en Frankrijk is dat volgens de onderzoekers circa 20 procent.
Ook over Joden zijn Duitsers duidelijk minder positief dan Nederland en andere Europese landen.
Positief over moslims: Nederland ( 62 pct), Frankrijk (56 pct), Denemarken (55 pct), Portugal (47 pct), West-Duitsland pct), Oost-Duitsland (26 pct).
Negatief over Joden: Nederland (10 pct), Denemarken (12 pct), Frankrijk (21 pct), Duitsland (28 pct).

Germans least tolerant of Islam and Jews, Dutch most

Deutsche Welle - A survey recently conducted by the University of Muenster has found that Germans are considerably more negative in their views about Muslims and Jews than their European neighbors.
Germans view Muslims and their religion, as well as Jews, more negatively than their European neighbors, according to sociologist Detlef Pollack, who led a study on religious tolerance by the University of Muenster in north-western Germany.

Recently I became aware of a proposal to the Council of Ministers of the European Union for the phased introduction of a Pan-European standard for a more user-friendly communication:
‘Having chosen English as the preferred language in the European Union, the European Parliament has commissioned a feasibility study into ways of improving efficiency in communications between Government Departments.
European officials have often pointed out that English spelling is unnecessarily difficult. For example: cough, plough, rough, through and thorough. What is clearly needed is a phased programme of changes to iron out these anomalies. The programme would, of course, be administered by a committee staffed at top level by all participating nations.

Waarom hebben de Duitsers het verdrag over de aansluiting van de Betuwelijn met Oberhausen gebroken? In 2010 zou dat al klaar zijn maar Duitsland is zelfs nu nog niet met de aanleg begonnen. Daarover gaat dit commentaar in de Berliner Umschau. Reken voorlopig maar niet op een aansluiting van de dure Betuwelijn met de rest van Europa. Er is geen geld omdat volgens Karl Weiss iedere euro gestoken wordt in een krankzinnig project van de christendemocraten: CDU-Wahnsinnsprojekt, Stuttgart21. Zo iets zou Nederland nooit doen. Toch?

Nederlanders staan per werkdag gemiddeld veertien minuten in de file, dus zeven minuten heen en zeven minuten terug. En daar is niets aan te doen. De enige structurele oplossing van het fileprobleem is dat Nederlanders gewoon stoppen met werken.
De Nederlandse Randstad, Utrecht en Arnhem horen tot de meest verstopte gebieden van Europa. Alleen met Brussel is het nog erger gesteld.
Automobilisten staan in Nederland per jaar 65 uur in de file. Het slechtste tijdstip om de snelweg op te gaan is donderdagochtend tussen 8 en 9 uur. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Inrix, een bedrijf dat systemen voor verkeersinformatie levert.

Dutch city Utrecht wastes most time in traffic

Euronews - US traffic company INRIX found that in Europe Monday rush hour in Brussels is the worst place to be. But it said the Dutch city of Utrecht clocks in at 75 wasted traffic hours per year, followed closely by Manchester, then Paris and Dutch bottleneck Arnhem. Europe’s ‘capital’, Brussels, adds 65 hours’ per year of crawling time to the daily commute, versus London’s 54 or Berlin’s 35.

Te weten drie Britten, een Fransman, een Duitser en een dronken Pool (mogelijk verdwaald). Verder bestond de demonstratie van het European Freedom Initiative (EFI) uit een tiental Nederlanders.
Er was meer pers en politie. Gezellig werd het pas toen een dertigtal Ajax-supporters langs kwam.

Ook de nieuwe Nederlandse regering is niet van plan Servië toe te laten tot de Europese Unie. Tenminste niet voordat de massamoordenaar Ratko Mladic voor het Internationale Strafhof in Den Haag is verschenen.
Gaat Servië nu wat meer doen om Mladic te pakken en uit te leveren? In Servië beseft iedereen dat het voor hun land een publicitaire ramp zou worden als Mladic wordt gepakt. En helemaal als hij zou gaan praten op het Joegoslavië-tribunaal in Den Haag.

Das ist nun zehn Jahre her, weshalb schafften es die klassischen Parteien in dieser Zeit nicht, auf diese Verunsicherung zu reagieren?
Parallel zur Globalisierung erleben wir in den Niederlanden den Zusammenbruch der klassischen Parteien. Sozialdemokraten, Liberale und Christdemokraten hatten einst über 80 Prozent der Sitze im Parlament, jetzt sind es noch knapp über die Hälfte. Wilders Erfolg zehn Jahre nach dem Tod von Fortyn zeigt, dass die traditionellen Parteien nicht mehr in der Lage sind, Antworten auf das Unbehagen in der Gesellschaft zu finden. Das Links-rechts-Schema funktioniert bei kaum einem Thema mehr. Denken wir an die Debatte über Europa, über Einwanderung oder über Klimapolitik. Auf der einen Seite gibt es deshalb einen riesigen Bedarf an Orientierung, auf der anderen Seite innerlich geschwächte traditionelle Parteien.

We geven het maar even door in het kader van World on the Dutch. Waar dit vandaan komt, weet ik niet maar Servië is blijkbaar hoopvol dat de nieuwe Nederlandse regering positiever zal staan tegenover de toetreding van Servië tot de EU. Ook al is oorlogsmisdadiger Mladic nog niet gevangen genomen. Dat blijkt uit de woorden van de Servische vice-premier Božidar Đelić.

Geert Wilders zei gisteren in een interview met een Australische televisiezender dat Islam niet vergeleken kan worden met het Christendom. Verder noemde de PVV-leider Islam een gewelddadige ideologie net als facisme en communisme. Hij riep ook op om alle immigratie van moslims naar Westerse landen te stoppen.
Wilders is nu op weg naar New York waar hij zal spreken op de 9/11 rally tegen de komst van een Islamitisch centrum op enkele honderdsen meters van Ground Zero.

Nu Europa één grote liefdevolle club van eensgezinde mensen is geworden, hoe moet het nu verder met schelden en belasteren? Dat vraagt de schrijver van dit artikel zich af.
Vroeger was het eenvoudig. De Britten vochten met de Nederlanders dus schreef een Brit vierhonderd jaar geleden: “Your tongue? ‘Twill teach you to kiss closer, not like a slobbering Dutchman!” Vele andere scheldwoorden (Dutch Courage) bestaan nog altijd zoals deze, mij onbekend: Dutch wife” (prostitute or sex doll).
Wist u trouwens dat voor de WW’s Duitsers bekend stonden als de hippies van hun tijd: flamboyante romantici?
Maar nogmaals, nu de Europeanen geen oorlogen meer voeren en grenzen zijn afgeschaft, hoe weten de inwoners nou wie ze moeten beledigen en hoe?

Europe is a godless, atheist, socialist society, with apparently no freedom of speech or individual liberties. That’s how Republican Representative John Fleming (R-LA) frames the coming midterm election:

We are either going to go down the socialist road and become like western Europe and create, I guess really a godless society, an atheist society. Or we’re going to continue down the other pathway where we believe in freedom of speech, individual liberties and that we remain a Christian nation. So we’re going to have to win that battle, we’re going to have to solve that argument before we can once again reach across and work together on things.

De taaloorlog heeft bij onze Belgische vrienden nu ook in het voetbal toegeslagen. Het is de jeugdtrainers van KFC Strombeek vanaf nu verboden hun instructies in het Frans te geven. Omwonenden klaagden over het feit dat de trainers veelvuldig het woord ‘ballon’ in plaats van ‘bal’ gebruikten terwijl de club op Vlaams grondgebied is gevestigd. De lokale bevolking diende een petitie in bij de burgemeester. Die het verzoek niet honoreerde maar wel inwilligde. C’est ca!

Strombeek: Club de foot francophone mise en demeure de s’entrainer en flamand

RTBF - Le climat reste parfois extrêmement tendu entre néerlandophones et francophones en périphérie bruxelloise. A Strombeek, une pétition signée par plus de mille personnes, exige qu’on ne parle plus français pendant les entraînements du club de foot local, alors que la majorité des jeunes joueurs est francophone.
La pétition émane d’un groupuscule local dont le président, Robert Timmermans, a reçu notre équipe dans sa coquette résidence. “Cette pétition“, précise-t-il, “vise à obliger la direction du KFC Strombeek à engager des entraîneurs néerlandophones.” L’entraineur, ainsi que 80 % des joueurs parlent le français; voilà qui dérange les membres du Werkgroep Vlaamse Actie Grimbergen.

The Christian Science Monitor - In Paris and London, opinion seems split between those who support and even admire New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s acceptance of the Islamic center and those who say the 16-story center is inappropriate or a provocation Americans shouldn’t accept. In France, stories on Mr. Bloomberg’s decision registered surprise that an America often seen here as narrow-minded and Arab-hating proved more open and tolerant in some ways than current French opinion.
“What we see [in New York] is a fair, balanced treatment of communities ….Let the Americans do it their way….most of their founders settled in the US in order to obtain absolute religious freedom, and this is what is being upheld by this [New York City] decision,” comments one François Bogard, in a Le Monde forum.
Yet striking among pundits, websites, and bloggers is an often articulate though sometimes churlish depiction of Islam as a single monolithic form of faith, inherently violent and extreme, and of Muslims as incapable of being moderate.

Wat vindt de redactie van het toonaangevende Arab News van het feit dat Geert Wilders waarschijnlijk betrokken wordt bij de nieuwe regering in Nederland?
Verontrustend en beangstigend! Overigens wordt in het stuk geen enkel dreigement geuit ten opzichte van het Westen in het algemeen en Nederland of Geert Wilders in het bijzonder. Dat vinden wij geweldig en dat mag ook wel eens gezegd worden. Toch?
Arab News vraagt zich af hoe lang het gaat duren voordat er anti-Islam wetten gaan verschijnen? Zoals een verbod van de burka. De hoofddoek? De Koran?
En dat is allemaal niet nodig, meent Arab News. Volgens de schrijver laat Europa zich opfokken door de complotten van een miniscuul aantal vervreemde jonge lokale moslims.
Verder speelt een algehele teleurstelling met het leven in Europa een rol. Teleurstelling die wordt afgereageerd op moslims. En waarom worden deze vragen NIET gesteld in Europa? Vraagt Arab News zich af. ‘These are questions not yet being asked in Europe’. Dus stelletje luiwammesen stel die vragen eens.
JdeW heeft de schrijver gevraagd of hij denkt dat de leegte en teleurstelling in het leven hier misschien komt doordat Europeanen niet langer leven volgens de regels van God? Zodat we weten wat ons te doen staat. Nog geen antwoord gekregen.

The Netherlands is in a similar situation. It is two months since the Dutch went to the polls. Immediately following the election, the leader of the party winning the largest number of seats, Mark Rutte of the Liberals, was confident that he would form a coalition by the beginning of July.
The beginning of July has come and gone. So has the beginning of August and still the Netherlands is without a new government — and it looks as if it is going to be at least the beginning of September before an announcement. To be fair to Rutte, the arithmetic simply is not there. [read on] (more…)
