Hier kunt u reageren op het ‘ikje’ dat vandaag is gepubliceerd op de Achterpagina van het NRC Handelsblad. Op de nrc-site kan niet meer worden gereageerd op het ikje, een stukje dat door nrc-lezers zelf is ingezonden.

Ikje niet geplaatst…
Is uw ikje niet geplaatst door het NRC Handelsblad, een maand nadat u hem hebt ingestuurd, maar bent u er toch trots op, dan kunt u het aan de vergetelheid ontrukken door het te publiceren op drasties in de categorie Trots Op Ikje. Op de Vrijplaats voor Verstoten , Verdwaalde en Verboden Ikjes gingen velen u voor. Opsturen gaat eenvoudig via ‘contact us’, zie links boven op drasties.

JdeW hoorde eens verstandige vrouwen de verschillen in gedrag tussen hun zonen en dochters bespreken. Een professor vertelde dat ze echt haar best had gedaan om stereotiepen te vermijden. Dus niet direct die pop naar de dochter en de auto naar de zoon. Het hielp niet. Haar kinderen vielen gewoon vanzelf in de gebruikelijke patronen. En ze verzuchtte: “Ik moest wel concluderen, het komt van binnenuit.”
In Zweden is er een kind - Pop (2) - waarvan niet bekend is gemaakt of het een jongen of een meisje is. Want, zo zeggen de ouders, sekse is niets meer dan een ‘maatschappelijk bedenksel’. De moeder: “Wij willen dat Pop niet meteen in voorgeschreven gedrag wordt gedrongen. Het is wreed om kinderen al vanaf hun geboorte een blauwe of roze stempel op het voorhoofd te drukken.”
Helemaal fout! Ten eerste is sexe geen maatschappelijk bedenksel. Er bestaan echt jongens en meisjes en het accepteren daarvan is belangrijk voor het ontwikkelen van een eigen identiteit. Het effect van negeren zou wel eens averechts kunnen werken in die zin dat de sexe van het kind juist wordt benadrukt in plaats van onbelangrijk gemaakt.
Hoewel het wellicht het tegendeel lijkt, is dit volgens JdeW een voorbeeld van ouderlijke arrogantie. Deze mensen denken blijkbaar dat alles wat ze doen voor hun kind van groot belang is. Nou, in werkelijkheid valt dat best mee. Het grootste deel van het gedrag van kinderen is erfelijk bepaald. En van de rest weet niemand precies hoe het werkt.
Dat er een steekje los is aan deze ouders blijkt ook uit de opmerking van de moeder dat het wreed is om een kind direct een stempel van vrouwelijk of mannelijk te geven. Wij zijn dus allemaal WREED!
Natuurlijk is JdeW niet voor de overdreven typering van kinderen. Daphne Deckers schrijft: “In heel wat Zuid- en Oost-Europese landen is het gebruikelijk om pasgeboren meisjes meteen van oorbelletjes te voorzien. En in Amerika krijgen babymeisjes niet zelden een knellende, roze ‘haarband’ om het hoofd, zodat het toch maar vooral duidelijk is dat het hier om meisjes gaat. Dit zijn nog relatief onschuldige uitvloeisels van de “blauwe of roze stempel”, maar er zijn wereldwijd genoeg culturen waar alleen een piemel tot gejuich in de verloskamer leidt. In landen als China kan het zelfs behoorlijk nadelig zijn om als meisje geboren te worden.” In China is het overigens weer de religie die een vervelende rol speelt. Bij Chinezen moet de begrafenis door de zoon worden geregeld.
Volgens JdeW blijkt uit dit hele verhaal overigens dat het een meisje is.
Wat denken jullie?
Een andere mogelijkheid is dat het kind tweeslachtig is. Dan heb ik niets gezegd.

Interviewer: Als u over religie schrijft, maakt u weinig onderscheid tussen de godsdiensten. De islam krijgt er even hard van langs als de joods-christelijke godsdienst.
Kousbroek: Dat is mogelijk. Toch ben ik ten aanzien van de islam nog tamelijk discreet, misschien wel uit angst voor mijn hachje. Een feit is dat ik niet gauw een manifest tegen de islam zou ondertekenen, terwijl ik onmiddellijk mijn naam zou zetten onder een manifest tegen het christendom. Dat heeft niets met respect te maken; met de achterlijkheid van religies is het zoals in Orwells Animal Farm: all religions are equal, but the islam is more equal. De greep die deze godsdienst op zijn gelovigen heeft is vele malen sterker dan we bij ons gewend zijn. Het fascineert me altijd weer om te zien wat er gebeurt als een dominee een ‘dialoog’ wil aangaan met de islam. De moslims die daar op ingaan doen dat omdat ze denken dat deze christenen begrepen hebben dat de islam superieur is aan hun religie. Dat levert een dialoog op zoals die waar de Engelsen zo dol op zijn, op het toneel, waar de een het heeft over paarden en de ander over vrouwen zonder dat ze dat van elkaar doorhebben.Interviewer: In uw brief aan de Arabist Jan Brugman (’Dialoog tussen twee ongelovigen’ in Einsteins Poppenhuis) schrijft u dat het u niet zozeer verbaast dat de islamitische cultuur zoveel fundamentalisme kent - bij ons was in de negentiende eeuw ook ‘de EO aan de macht’ - maar wel dat de islamitische wereld geen Multatuli’s kent en geen Godloochenaarsvereniging De Dageraad.
Kousbroek: Er bestaat in de islamitisch wereld inderdaad niet de geringste neiging tot revolte. Die was er bij de christenen al in een vroeg stadium. Het is ook alsof islamieten totaal niet geïntereseerd zijn in het begrip waarheid, of iets in wat wij daar onder verstaan. Trouwens in de Japanse cultuur bestaat die interesse ook niet. Men wil daar helemaal niet weten hoe het ‘echt’ is, die vraag begrijpen zij niet. Waar het bij hen om draait is consensus, de waarheid is waar iedereen zich bij neerlegt. Dat is een van de redenen waarom ik in gepaste bescheidenheid van mening ben dat de westerse cultuur superieur is aan alle andere.

The BNP aims to send nonwhite Britons “home.” At private BNP rallies, Griffin, convicted in 1998 of incitement to racial hatred, warns adherents that Muslim men are plotting to defile underage British girls, peppering his invective with concocted statistics such as this one: “The average racist murderer in this country is 40 times more likely to be a member of an ethnic minority than the other way round.”

Totally wicked:

Several financial giants that received federal bailout money in the last year paid out bonuses to employees in 2008 that greatly exceeded the amount of profit generated by the banks, according to a study on executive compensation released by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo Thursday.
Despite claims by bank executives that bonuses are tied to the company’s performance, the report states that “there is no clear rhyme or reason to how the banks compensate or reward their employees.”
Cuomo’s investigation “suggests a disconnect between compensation and bank performance that resulted in a ‘heads I win, tails you lose’ bonus system.”

We’re talking Goldman Sachs here, of course, which earned $2.3 billion, received $10 billion in TARP funds and doled out more than double its earnings — $4.8 billion, to be exact — in bonus booty. But they weren’t alone: Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Merrill Lynch … a veritable festival of handouts to the very people who steered the economic Titanic into the financial iceberg.
Please, tell us all again how much more efficient private industry is at sorting out the worthy in competitive markets ….

Republicans started the year with 41 senators. Eight of them — or 20 percent — are ditching (or have already ditched) their caucus: Kit Bond of Missouri, Sam Brownback of Kansas, Jim Bunning of Kentucky, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, Mel Martinez of Florida, George Voinovich of Ohio, and as of today, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas have announced their retirements. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched parties. What’s left is heavily concentrated in the South and Mormon Corridor:

After two consecutive electoral routs, the surviving Republicans generally represent the safest base turf. Republicans represent 17 of the 24 Southern seats, 10 of the 26 Western seats, 10 of the 26 Midwestern seats and just three of the 24 Northeastern seats. Republicans dominate just the South and the Mormon Corridor in the Rockies. The entire GOP Senate leadership hailed from those two regions until Sen. John Ensign (Nev.) resigned his leadership post because of scandal.

For a party that has become too South-heavy, potentially losing seats in Missouri, New Hampshire and Ohio (among other places) won’t help their ability to play better to a national mainstream audience. read on here>> (more…)

Een 26-jarige Fransman heeft zich in Australië als oliesjeik voorgedaan. Abdelkarim Serhani wist zich te omringen met mooie vrouwen, snelle auto’s en te slapen in luxueuze hotelkamers. Hij kreeg zelfs een contract bij een reality tv-show. Serhani (foto) logeerde 16 dagen in een exclusief resort op Hamilton Island, een bestemming voor rijken en beroemdheden. Rekening: 20 duizend euro. Daarnaast charterde hij een luxe jacht, huurde hij dure auto’s en dineerde hij met topmodellen uit Sydney. Australië was niet de enige plek waar de amateur-acteur (video) actief is geweest. Ook in België staat nog rekening van 30.000 euro open.

De Nederlandse pers besteedt nauwelijks nog aandacht aan klimaatsceptici. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoekje van Sargasso. Het blog bekeek hoeveel artikelen die het laatste halfjaar zijn gepubliceerd pro dan wel contra waren, en hoeveel pro/contra met nuances.
Sargasso: In de online discussies over klimaatsverandering geven de zogeheten klimaatsceptici (die niet overtuigd zijn van het effect van menselijk handelen op het klimaat) regelmatig aan dat hun tegengeluid onderdrukt wordt.
Nu was de situatie een jaar of vijf geleden (ruim voor het laatste echte IPCC rapport) nog zo dat de beide kanten van het verhaal evenveel aandacht kregen (in mijn beleving) terwijl de consensus al een ruime meerderheid van de wetenschappers had bereikt.
Maar door het eeuwige doorzeuren van de sceptici heb ik toch maar eens een steekproef gedaan naar de situatie nu. Hier het resultaat:

“Pro” in bovenstaande grafiek betekent het aanhangen van de theorie dat de aarde aan het opwarmen is als gevolg van menselijk handelen. “Contra” dus het tegenovergestelde.

Volgens de noteringen op goksyndicaat unibet.com gaat de strijd om de landstitel in de eredivisie komend seizoen tussen Ajax en PSV: notering 2,90 tegen 1. Dus voor 1 euro inzet, 2,90 euro opbrengst. Landskampioen AZ moet het doen met 4,25:1, Feyenoord staat op 12,00:1. Dames: meer betekent hier minder kans op de titel. Luis Suarez (Ajax) wordt getipt als topscorer van de eredivisie, gevolgd door AZ’er Mounir El Hamdaoui, de topscorer van vorig seizoen.

Volledige bescherming tegen malaria is mogelijk, aldus wetenschappers van het Universitair Medisch Centrum St Radboud (UMC) in Nijmegen. Vrijwilligers die werden besmet met malaria, terwijl zij het antimalariamiddel chloroquine kregen, bleken een goede afweer tegen malaria hebben opgebouwd. Enkele maanden later namen de wetenschappers nogmaals de proef op de som. De vrijwilligers werden opnieuw blootgesteld aan malariaparasieten. Ook nu werden zij niet ziek door de opgebouwde afweerreactie.

This is Fox News response to Glenn Beck’s latest racially charged attack, where he called the President of the United States a “racist” who has “a deep-seated hatred for white people”:

Asked to respond to Beck’s comments, Fox News SVP of Programming Bill Shine didn’t repudiate them. “Glenn Beck expressed a personal opinion which represented his own views, not those of the Fox News Channel. And as with all commentators in the cable news arena, he is given the freedom to express his opinions,” he said.

So there you have it. Glenn Beck, and presumably all Fox News commentators, are free to spew whatever race-baiting, fear-mongering hate they’d like. It’s just their opinion.

On Monday, Fox News Legal Analyst and former New Jersey state Judge Andrew Napolitano told to the conservative network’s audience that police broke the law when they arrested Professor Henry Louis Gates for disorderly conduct.
