Nederlanders staan wereldwijd bekend om twee zaken: water en geld. Voor JdeW klopt dat ook, met slechts een kleine variatie: geld als water.
Van water hebben Nederlanders inderdaad veel verstand. Waar ook ter wereld een probleem is met water, zie je een Nederlandse bedrijf dat het moet oplossen. Het tweede - verstand van geld - blijkt echter gebaseerd op een misverstand, aldus een onderzoek van de ING-bank. Daar hebben Nederlanders weinig kaas van gegeten.
Er zit wat in. Vooral als we vaststellen wie dit onderzoek heeft gedaan.

Dorian de Wind heeft een Nederlandse vader en een Equadoriaanse moeder. Hij woonde tot zijn tiende in Equador, leerde Nederlands op de Antillen en vestigde zich uiteindelijk in de VS. Dorian de Wind - As the long freight train leaves the Nazi Westerbork transit camp and picks up speed across the flat Dutch countryside, Louis takes out the couple of sheets of paper he had stuffed in his pocket and begins to write his letter. He knows he has to hurry: It will not be very long before the train crosses the border into Germany.

Writing in Dutch, he starts:

Darling, I am on my way to an unknown destination. I sit here with 56 people in a freight car. I have to write on my knee while we are riding …

Louis finds it difficult to write, for it is very dark in the sealed freight wagon.

Still not knowing how close to the border the train is — his growing anxiety reflected in his worsening handwriting — Louis hastily ends the letter with words of hope that, “God willing,” he will see his loved ones again; with words of love, “a thousand kisses;” and with a request to his wife: “Omhels Loekie,” — Give Loekie, his little daughter, a hug.

De verkopen van Saab auto’s blijven stijgen. In het laatste kwartaal werd een derde (11.448 auto’s) verkocht van alle auto’s die Saab in het afgelopen jaar verkocht.

Saab is continuing its efforts to boost sales The number of Saab cars sold in the last three months of 2010 was more than double a year earlier, the carmaker’s Dutch owner Spyker has said.
A total of 11,448 Saab cars were sold worldwide between October and December, up 129% from the same period in 2009, and 31% higher than July-September.
For 2010 as a whole, 31,696 Saab cars were sold globally.

Het doodvonnis voor drugssmokkel van de Nederlands-Iraanse Zahra Bahrami is vandaag bevestigd door haar advocaat. Bahrami werd in 2009 opgepakt tijdens een demonstratie in Bagdad tijdens familiebezoek in Iran. Ze heeft enkele maanden in isolatie gezeten en zou zijn mishandeld. Hoewel ze een Nederlands paspoort heeft, kan de ambassade in Iran haar geen consulaire bijstand verlenen. Dat omdat Iran niet de Nederlandse nationaliteit van vertrokken onderdanen erkent.

The Dutch study asked 32 women who already had boys to try a special “little girl diet” high in calcium and magnesium.
This meant eating foods like goat’s cheese salad, vegetable stew and rice pudding. Foods like potatoes and bananas, which have high levels of potassium, that is believed to lead to boys, were restricted.

Lake County News - Surprisingly, carrots were not originally orange. Until the 17th century, carrots grown in Europe all had slender yellow or purple roots. The carrot’s orange color came about through the efforts of breeders in the Netherlands during the Dutch struggle for independence from Spain, when orange represented Dutch patriotism.
Today’s carrots may be found in a veritable rainbow of varying shades of red, yellow, purple, white, and, of course, the more common orange. A rare variety of pink-red carrot is grown in Northern India.

Nu besteedt ook het blog Huffington Post aandacht aan het stuk in de New York Times over het fenomeen dat zoveel mensen in Nederland, vooral vrouwen maar ook mannen, er de voorkeur aan geven om parttime te werken.

Nederlanders hebben uitgevonden, aldus de Huffington Post, dat parttime en flexibel werken de mensen productiever maakt. Kortom: het is ook goed voor de onderneming. En misschien is het ook een idee voor de Amerikaanse experts zich eens te verdiepen in het fenomeen dat tevreden mensen productiever zijn. En neem dan ook mee dat gezonde mensen productiever zijn. Want als er een opvallend aspect is aan het leven in Amerika, is het wel hoe krankzinnig hard de meeste mensen daar werken.

Piet Hein lichtte het desgevraagd voor de drasties bezoekers nog nader toe: “Noem me één land waar je de hele winter gratis en voor niets sneeuw thuisbezorgd krijgt en waar je in de zomer, let wel ook gratis, iedere dag een paar uur in de file mag staan.”

Cost of becoming Dutch going up

The cost of becoming Dutch is set to go up from €567 to €789 from January 1, the home affairs ministry said. The naturalisation of children aged under 18 will go up from €85 to €116 and the residency permit for asylum seekers will increase in price from €50 to €202. Home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner said in a memo to MPs it is reasonable to put up the cost of becoming Dutch because of the advantages it brings with it.

Nu New START is getekend is er een nieuw plafond voor het aantal strategische (intercontinentale) atoomwapens dat Rusland en Amerika mogen opstellen. Onder Bush senior was afgesproken dat ze er 6.000 mochten hebben, te verdelen over ten hoogste 1600 raketten of vliegtuigen.
In praktijk is dat nu overigens al minder dan de helft.
En nu hebben Obama en Medvedev dus beloofd slechts 1500 à 1675 atoomkoppen, te plaatsen op ongeveer 800 raketten en vliegtuigen.
Maar aan de tactische wapens die in Europa liggen wordt niets gedaan. Die naar schatting 180 atoombommen zijn uiteraard nergens voor nodig en kunnen weg. Dat vindt ook de Amerikaan Matt Eckel van Foreign Policy Watch.
Er is overigens wel enige beweging, zelfs bij de NATO. Als het de ontwapening helpt, aldus minister Verhagen, zou hun eenzijdige verwijdering niet langer onbespreekbaar zijn. De weg naar global zero is lang, maar ondanks Iran, Pakistan, Israël, en Noord-Korea: het ruikt in Europa een beetje naar lente.

Dutch Fund helps injured kittens

Geneseo, Illinois - Four kittens are on the mend thanks to medical care provided by the Dutch Memorial Fund.
Funds were used by the Henry County Humane Society’s Geneseo Chapter to pay for amputations for two cats and eye removals for two others. “The Dutch Fund made all the difference in the world for these kittens,” said humane society volunteer Cindy Avey.
A Dutch Memorial Fund was established in April after a cat, dubbed “Dutch,” was found tortured and nailed to a utility pole in rural Geneseo.

The most famous long distance skating race in the world is the Eleven Cities Race in Friesland, the Netherlands. De Elfstedentocht! It is a dangerous adventure and people are advised not to try and take part in this event over two hundred kilometers in the northern, still partly unexplored, part of the Netherlands.
Many people have lost their lives trying to finish that race.
Some died of exhaustion, some drowned when they didnt see a wak, some lost their way in the barren lands and where never seen again, some just lost the will to live after realising they were not gonna be there in time to get their Elfstedenkruisje.
This year the chance that it will be held looks pretty good. It’s freezing out there. Having skated just 80 kilometers long distance myself once, JdeW once more urges everyone to stay away as far as possible from Friesland and the Elfstedentocht.

How difficult is it?
That depends a lot on the weather conditions. In 1909, the winner Minne Hoekstra took almost 14 hours to cover the distance, in 1997 Henk Angenent just took seven hours. Experts say 1963 was the most difficult race. It was minus 18 degrees Celsius. Only 69 skaters out of 10,000 made it to the finish: the worst ever result in the history of the race. The title of a recent film on the Tour that year says it all, it is called ‘The hell of `63’

Wat is hier gebeurd? Een raar verhaal. Volgens het IPPMedia in Tanzania is het Nederlandse bedrijf Bioshape Tanzania, dat biodiesel zou gaan produceren van jatropha in Tanzania, er mee opgehouden. Zonder duidelijke opgave van reden. Het personeel zou al een jaar lang niet zijn uitbetaald en heeft daarom de tractoren in beslag genomen.
Was het de droogte?
Het bedrijf zou van Cor Vaes en Wil Hermans zijn. Hoewel het Nederlandse moederbedrijf in surseance van betaling is, zegt Vaes in een ander artikel dat het bedrijf in Tanzania op het punt staat verder te gaan.
Opvallend is dat ook vakgroep Energy Science van de Universiteit Utrecht er bij betrokken is. Twee studenten doen onderzoek naar het succes van de teelt van jatropha voor biodiesel in Tanzania - ’Socio economic impacts of Jatropha production in Tanzania’.

Master Thesis - Scenario analysis will be carried out in which the future impacts will be evaluated. Land ownership and land use is particularly relevant for the socio-economic performance of Jatropha production in the Tanzanian context, but also for the environmental performance (GHG balance and biodiversity impacts). Also the use of water, if applicable, should be investigated, as this is often a crucial limiting factor in Tanzania.

Bavaria mag de naam Bavaria houden. Jammer dat het bier niet te drinken is, want wat timmert die zaak geweldig aan de weg. Eerder werden ze bij het wereldkamioenschap voetbal in Zuid-Afrika al wereldkampioen sponsoring. En nu draaien ze de Bavarian Brauerbund weer een loer.

Warum die bayerischen Brauer überhaupt so stur sind, scheint rätselhaft. Schließlich verwenden die Niederländer die Bezeichnung für ihr Bier schon seit 1925.
Zudem ist die Liebe der Niederländer zum bayerischen Bier schon viel früher urkundlich erwähnt: Bereits 1897 wurde in Hamburg-Altona die „Bavaria Brauerei AG“ gegründet. Als ihr Urvater gilt der Niederländer Peter I. de Voss, der bereits 1647 in Altona Bier braute. Das letzte Werk der späteren Bavaria- St. Pauli-Brauerei wurde 2003 geschlossen. Hätten die Bayern doch einfach auf den freien Markt vertraut. Helmut Moller, Inhaber des Bier-Spezialitäten-Ladens in der Berliner Karl-Marx-Allee, der Hunderte Biere im Sortiment hat, sagte am Mittwoch als Reaktion: „Bavaria aus Holland? Kenn’ ich. Führ ich aber nicht. Aus Prinzip nicht. Das schmeckt viel zu wässrig.“

Er is geen Afrikaans land dat een bestuur heeft dat kwalitiatief ook maar in de buurt komt van Westerse landen. Afrika is er na het koloniale tijdperk alleen maar op achteruit gegaan. In bepaalde gevallen terug naar het stenen tijdperk.
Economisch waren Afrikanen zestig jaar geleden beter af dan de meeste Aziaten en veel Zuidamerikanen. Ook was ieder land in Afrika veiliger dan nu. En zelfs met de rechtspraak was het in de meeste landen beter gesteld.
Eigenlijk zijn het allemaal uitbuiters en machtswellustelingen die het daar sindsdien voor het zeggen hebben gehad. Nooit zal een Afrikaanse leider na een jaar of acht zeggen: het karwei zit er op. Jullie zijn arm gebleven en ik ben miljardair geworden, laat een ander het nu maar eens doen.
Dat ligt overigens niet in de eerste plaats aan de dictatortjes zelf. Het is de vraag of het in het Westen zonder ons goed gecontroleerde kiessysteem veel beter zou gaan. Nee, dat ligt opmerkelijk genoeg aan de Afrikanen zelf. Zij accepteren dit gedrag van hun leiders en kiezen telkens weer dit soort mensen.
Is het de achterlijkheid? Het tribalisme?
Zeker is dat er geen plaats is voor enig optimisme. Er valt namelijk helaas helemaal niets aan te doen. Want, ik zeg het nog maar eens eerlijk, democratie is erfelijk.

En weer wordt een talentvolle jeugdvoetballer uit Nederland weggelokt door het grote geld. De vijftienjarige Nathan Ake gaat van de jeugdopleiding van Feyenoord naar Chelsea. Het is zowiezo al moeilijk om een beetje goed voetbal in Nederland te houden maar zo wordt het natuurlijk volstrekt onmogelijk. Gelukkig is Leo Beenhakker directeur van Feyenoord. Laat het maar aan Leo over om dit schandaal onder de aandacht te brengen van de wereld.
Engelse clubs zijn de Grote Witte Haaien van het voetbal.

PREDATORS!: CHELSEA SLAMMED FOR SWOOP TO LURE FEYENOORD TEENAGER

Chelsea are at the centre of another international transfer storm after luring promising teenager Nathan Ake away from Feyenoord, leaving the furious Dutch club calling them “the great white sharks of football”.
Premier League champions Chelsea have agreed to sign the highly rated Ake, who will be 16 in February, before Feyenoord had a chance to offer him a professional contract.

Het woord ‘filibuster’ is afkomstig uit het Nederlands. Het is afgeleid van het woord vrijbuiter. In Amerika wordt het nu gebruikt voor het kidnappen van het parlementaire debat. In het Amerikaanse Huis is het afgeschaft maar in de Senaat bestaat het nog. Als de senatoren gaan filibusteren dan is er een meerderheid van 60 senators (van de 100) nodig om over een wetsvoorstel te gaan debatteren. Republikeinen gebruiken het veel om met een minderheid wetten tegen te houden. Zoals onlangs de DREAM-wet die illegale immigranten, die als kind met hun ouders naar de VS zijn gekomen, het recht wilde geven op scholing en dienen in het Amerikaanse leger.
Nu is er het plan om van de filibuster een echte filibuster te maken, dat wil zeggen dat de senatoren aanwezig moeten zijn en de hele nacht moeten debatteren over het wetsvoorstel.

This week the Washington Post - once a very good newspaper - announced a new blog written by conservative religious activist Jordan Sekulow.
Sekulow is a man who claims that the United States is not only a Christian nation but that “America has a special relationship with God.” Sekulow is a fierce proponent of the Oklahoma’s ban on sharia law. “The threat of Sharia law is real and the people of Oklahoma are ahead of the curve.”
But what some progressive Americans are most worried about is that he pals around with the likes of Dutchman Geert Wilders.

On September 11, 2010, Sekulow spoke at a Manhattan rally protesting the Park 51 Islamic Cultural Center (which, like event organizer Pamela Geller, he refers to as a “shrine to terror“) alongside far-right Dutch anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders.
In an article on conservatives’ embrace of Islamophobia, journalist Michelle Goldberg wrote, “A new type of religious bigotry has entered American politics, one more blatant than anything we’ve seen since the Twin Towers fell.” By giving Sekulow a platform, the Washington Post is legitimizing that bigotry.

UPDATE, december 16th, 2010 at 4:54 pm, JdeW - Today this blog drasties couldn’t be seen for an hour. Most likely because I published earlier today a ’secret diplomatic cable’ which came from the site of the British newspaper The Guardian. In this diplomatic cable departing U.S ambassador Clifford Sobel offered his very positive thoughts on the Netherlands.
I’m pretty sure that action was taken against drasties because of the publication of this cable.
Who it was and where it came from? I have no idea.
In the end I’m a little bit proud and a little bit concerned.
Proud because I got a visit from a lot of great American patriots.
Concerned because I would like to keep drasties up and running.

Earlier, JdeW - The Guardian published a secret US embassy cable about the Netherlands. In this cable departing US ambassador Clifford Sobel offers his thoughts on how the US could develop even stronger relations with the Dutch. He describes the Netherlands as a “vital transatlantic anchor.” ’They are our best partner in developing pilot projects in the counterterrorism area, and are world leaders in development, free trade, international law and human rights.’
Sobel also suggests that the U.S. and others push the Dutch into taking a leading role in balancing the traditional Spanish dominance on Latin American, to counter Venezuelan “meddling” in the Caribbean.
