Al vele jaren woon ik in het buitenland. En al die jaren krijg ik een Nederlandse krant thuis bezorgd. Heerlijk. Iedere dag ben ik bezig op het internet, iedere dag uren achter de computer maar ook ga ik mijn hele leven al iedere dag buitenshuis lunchen en dan wil ik een Nederlandse krant in de handen houden. Een krant die je overal kunt lezen. In de auto in de file, tijdens het eten, tijdens het werk, als je zit te wachten. Heerlijk. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat het er ooit uitgaat.
Dat kan door NewspaperDirect.

The most famous long distance skating race in the world is the Eleven Cities Race in Friesland, the Netherlands. De Elfstedentocht! It is a dangerous adventure and people are advised not to try and take part in this event over two hundred kilometers in the northern, still partly unexplored, part of the Netherlands.
Many people have lost their lives trying to finish that race.
Some died of exhaustion, some drowned when they didnt see a wak, some lost their way in the barren lands and where never seen again, some just lost the will to live after realising they were not gonna be there in time to get their Elfstedenkruisje.
This year the chance that it will be held looks pretty good. It’s freezing out there. Having skated just 80 kilometers long distance myself once, JdeW once more urges everyone to stay away as far as possible from Friesland and the Elfstedentocht.
How difficult is it? That depends a lot on the weather conditions. In 1909, the winner Minne Hoekstra took almost 14 hours to cover the distance, in 1997 Henk Angenent just took seven hours. Experts say 1963 was the most difficult race. It was minus 18 degrees Celsius. Only 69 skaters out of 10,000 made it to the finish: the worst ever result in the history of the race. Schrijver Arnon Grunberg was op bezoek bij de Nederlandse militairen in Afghanistan. Hij mocht zelfs meerijden op de Patria, een pantservoertuig met kanon en al.
Zonder duidelijke aanleiding lostte dat kanon plots een schot.
Grunberg dook weg, maar de majoor stelde hem gerust dat het slechts om een waarschuwingsschot ging. Afgevuurd omdat iemand wat te dichtbij kwam. De majoor vertelde dat in Afghanistan niemand zich drukmaakt om zo iets.

Nog maar 40 mijl te gaan, en dan kan ik na 2200 mijl (4074 km) het anker uit gooien in Sintmaarten. Ik denk dat ik vanavond met donker binnenloop. Vannacht had ik flink wat wind dus ben ik met gem. 8 kn lekker opgeschoten, en nu staat er ook nog wel een lekker windje. Het is zo een raar idee om zo snel al weer land te zien, maar nu ik er zo dichtbij ben kan ik echt niet meer wachten om Sint Maarten weer te zien. (more…)
Morgen weten we dus of Nederland het voetbaltuig uit de hele wereld op bezoek gaat krijgen. En ik doel hierbij niet op de Belgen met wie we proberen de Wereldkampioenschappen Voetbal 2018 binnen te halen.
Voor mensen die het zien zitten, wijs ik graag even op deze zeer geruststellende uitspraak van Ruud Lulgit, de man die het WK voor ons gaat binnenhalen en tevens vaste drasties medewerker.
Het kan dus. Geweldig om te weten dat al die heisa niet helemaal voor niets is geweest.
Ruud Gullit has urged England not to underestimate Holland’s joint World Cup bid with Belgium, as fears grew that the rank outsiders for 2018 may end up being more than just also-rans.
Former Chelsea manager Gullit said he believes the joint bid will surprise more than a few people when the hosts are announced tomorrow.

How far is nearby?
Nearby in interstellar space is in this case about twenty light-years away from earth, 100 million trillion miles. It would take the fastest spacecrafts from earth ever to have flown, Voyagers 1 and 2, hundreds of thousand of years to reach the planet, designated 581g. So, we won’t be visiting anytime soon.
The new planet, estimated by NASA researchers to be about three times as massive as the earth, orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581 every 36 days at a distance of about 13 million miles. The system is about 20 light-years away from earth.
And 581g is about 13 million miles away from its star, which puts it smack dab in the middle of Gliese’s Goldilock’s zone, not too hot, not too cold, just right for water to exist as a liquid. [read on](more…)
An asteroid discovered by Dutch astronomers in 1960 has been named after Netherlands football legend Johan Cruijff, that reports Voetbal International. The completely inconsequential piece of space rock was originally named ’14282′ but now, thanks to the relentless work of science journalist Carl Koppeschaar’s, the asteroid will forever be known as ‘Cruijff’. It has a diameter of about nine kilometres and it takes the asteroid five years, three months and 18 days to turn around the sun.
The former Ajax and Barcelona star joins an elite group of players to have celestial bodies named after them like Czech striker Josef Bican and Hungarian virtuoso Ferenc Puskas.
Apparently for this reality TV-show there’s not enough reality in day to day life in Iraq. Maybe life has become boring after the great times Iraqi’s had when president George W. Bush was liberating their country by dropping bombs on it until they were democratic.
Mission accomplished? As the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan enters its ninth year, most of the observers believe that corruption on all level of government — Afghanistan is currently ranked as the second-most corrupt government in the world by Transparency International, only Somalia is worse — may be the primary obstacle to forming a self-sustaining government and stable country. That led the NYTimes to ask this question last week: “What if government corruption is more dangerous than the Taliban?”

Het Yantai stadspark in Shandong in China gaat voorkomen dat bezoekers in parken te lang op een bank blijven zitten. De banken zijn voorzien van stalen pennen in de zitting die door een geldautomaat worden aangestuurd. Blijft volk te lang lanterfanten zonder de meter te voeren, dan schieten de stalen pennen omhoog. Onaangekondigd!
Het idee is niet onopgemerkt gebleven. De provincie Zuid-Holland zou studeren op plannen om het systeem aan te brengen op veel door Duitsers bezochte stranden. En volgens Ruud Lulgit zou de voetbalbond bekijken of het systeem als experiment in bepaalde ’saaie’ stadions kan worden aangebracht. Bij een doelpunt worden de pennen dan in beweging gezet.
Hoe populair is Laura Dekker? Wel, net is bekend gemaakt dat ze gisternacht is gearriveerd in Portimao in Portugal en nu ligt haar website er uit.

The current Russian heatwave is becoming one of the deadliest weather crises of our time. Is this a preview to the future of our planet? It’s likely the damage the heatwave will do to Russian agriculture will be in the tens of billions of dollars and the deathtoll of Russians will get to the tens of thousands.

Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of US forces in Iraq, said this weekend that Iraq’s army is ready to take over all operations in the country.
“We do believe they are ready to assume full operations in Iraq,” Odierno told ABC’s Christiane Amanpour Sunday.
“This is something we’ve been working for a very long time with the Iraqi security forces. For the last 20 months, we’ve been slowly and deliberately turning over more and more responsibility to them and they have stepped up. They continue to do broad scope operations across all of Iraq,” said the general.
Odierno said it wasn’t the security profile that gave him the most concern ahead of the August 31 deadline. “There will be people who attempt to take advantage of the opportunity of the attention being brought upon the August 31 date. And so there will be groups who try to take advantage of that and show weakness on the government of Iraq and create some sort of lack of confidence of the people in the process as we move forward,” he said.

Man Shobha Gurung, 45, and her 55-year-old husband Bardan, who were murdered last week, were killed for allegedly practicing witchcraft, according to police. Police discovered the reason after arresting three persons, including the faith healer, in connection with the murder case.
Toen ik jaren geleden in Polen kwam sprak ik de taal niet, kende ik kind noch kraai en voelde ik me vaak eenzaam. Tot er iemand mijn tuin in kwam en me een schaaltje fruit gaf. Hij glimlachte er verlegen bij en vertrok weer zonder een woord te zeggen. Dit was het begin van een lange hechte vriendschap. Hij liet me het bos zien, nam me mee naar de koek en zopie en later, toen ik zijn vertrouwen had gewonnen, leerde hij me het bos kennen zoals alleen lieve stropers dat kunnen.
Een jaar of twee geleden vertelde ik hem dat ik eraan zit te denken om weer eens verder op te trekken maar dat wist hij natuurlijk al. Ik zat de laatste tijd, in mezelf gekeerd, teveel voor me uit te staren maar toen ik hem eind vorig jaar vertelde dat ik weg zou gaan, brak hij en huilde als een klein kind. Ja, hij wist wel dat hij mee kon komen maar wie moet er dan ’s winters de dieren bijvoeren? Die anderen? Die hebben er toch helemaal geen verstand van. Ook dat ik mijn huis aan zou houden en vaak terug zou komen kon hem niet troosten.
Vorige week was ik even terug in Polen en ben weer met hem gaan lopen. Deze keer liep de dorpsfanfare voorop. Twee maten lopen, twee maten stilstaan en ik? Ik mocht als zijn zogenaamde beste vriend de dragers aanvoeren, brak en huilde als een kind.

The Ugandan parliament is considering legislation that could impose the death penalty for some homosexual acts, require people to report every gay individual and criminalize renting property to gay men and women.
This anti-gay push was inspired and promoted by the religious far right in the United States. Een Chinees meisje was eenzaam. Ze wilde graag een vriendje. Dus plakte de studente van de technische universiteit een briefje op de zogenaamde wensmuur van de University of Electronic Science and Technology in Chengdu, Sichuan province.
Ze schreef het volgende:
“Mijn naam is Zhang Mengqian. Ik ben een eerstejaars studente. Ik denk dat ik aantrekkelijk ben maar vreemd genoeg kan ik geen vriendje vinden. Maar ik geloof in het lot en dus weet ik dat er iemand voor me is. Als jij dat ook gelooft, kom dan de 24ste tussen half één en één uur naar studentenhuis nr. 12 op de campus. Roep buiten zacht mijn naam. Dan zal ik naar je kijken en als je mijn type bent, kom ik naar buiten.”
JdeW laat u al vast het meisje zien. Maar bedenk wel haar aanstaande vriendje had dus geen idee hoe ze uit zag! Nogmaals, dit is echt gebeurd!
De moeder van FARC-guerilla Tanja Nijmeijer verwacht niet dat ze haar dochter ooit nog levend terug zal zien. Hannie Nijmeijer denkt dat Tanja voorgoed bij de rebellen zal blijven. Terugkeren is onmogelijk. Dat vertelde ze gisteren aan het Colombiaanse tijdschrift Semana. De laatste keer dat Hannnie haar dochter zag was in 2005 in een FARC-kamp bij Meta. De ontmoeting was ‘intens en intiem’, aldus moeder Nijmeijer. Maar toen Tanja vroeg of ze betrokken was bij de FARC klapte ze dicht en werd ze ‘onbereikbaar’. Moeder Nijmeijer smeekt haar dochter om een teken van leven te geven zodat de familie weet dat ze niet dood is. “Het leger is ervan overtuigd dat Tanja nog leeft, maar ze kunnen het niet bewijzen. Al drie jaar heb ik niets gehoord van Tanja. Soms doet me dat het ergste vrezen. Het is een last zo te moeten leven.”
