In Saoedi-Arabie - het vergelijkbare centrum van de Islam - is de Bijbel verboden. Vrouwen ook min of meer. Je mag de minderwaardige schepsels niet zien of horen. Het land staat voor onderdrukking. Onderdrukking van de eigen bevolking door een Middeleeuws koningshuis, onderdrukking van andere geloven, van andersdenkenden, van sexualiteit en vooral van de vrouw. Een onderdrukking die elders is geculmineerd in het bij jonge meisjes zonder verdoving afsnijden van de geslachtsdelen. En dan zijn sommigen nog verbaasd dat moslims zo vaak boos zijn? Hoe boos, liet deze vrouwin Hofuf Mubarraz merken toenze dwars tegen de normen en waarden van het koninkrijk inging. Ze wandelde met een jongeman in een park toen ze werd aangehouden door een religieuze politieman. De jongeman viel flauw maar zij sloeg de agent het ziekenhuis in.
Saudi woman beats up Hai’a staffer By Abdul Hadi Al-Sama’il
Saudi Gazette, Al Ahsa – Al-Mubarraz police are investigating a complaint that a Saudi woman in her twenties allegedly punched and beat up a staffer of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (the Hai’a).

Iceland - More than a year and a half after Iceland’s major banks failed, all but sinking the country’s economy, police have begun rounding up a number of top bankers while other former executives and owners face a two-billion-dollar lawsuit.
Since Iceland’s three largest banks — Kaupthing, Landsbanki and Glitnir — collapsed in late 2008, their former executives and owners have largely been living untroubled lives abroad. A man dies and goes to hell. There he finds that there is a different hell for each country.
He goes to the German hell and asks, ‘What do they do here?’ He is told: ‘First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the German devil comes in and whips you for the rest of the day.’
The man does not like the sound of that at all, so he moves on..
He checks out the American hell, as well as the Russian hell and many more.

Today, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israeli security officials are “divided” over whether they need permission from the U.S. should Israel decide to attack Iran over its nuclear program. The Israelis fear that if new sanctions on Iran fail, “the Israeli and American positions on Iran could rapidly diverge — and Israel, if it chooses to attack Iran, would have no choice but to do so on its own.”
While top U.S. officials have been reluctant to focus on a military strike against Iran, let alone endorse an Israeli one, Fox News war hawk John Bolton said last night on the network’s business channel that the U.S should actually “be helping Israel if they’re making a decision that they might use military force against Iran.” However, on the O’Reilly Factor, another reliable Fox News armchair warrior Charles Krauthammer actually acknowledged that attacking Iran could prove pointless: read on>> (more…)

I dug deep inside my Yahoo settings, and I shuddered. Incoming messages had been forwarding to an unfamiliar e-mail address, one presumably typed in by intruders who had gained access to my account.
I’d been hacked.
That phrase has been popping up a lot lately on Web chats and at dinner parties in China, where scores of foreign reporters have discovered intrusions into their e-mail accounts. Er blijkt al weer een Nederlandse film te zijn die moslims wereldwijd woedend maakt. Film 786 heeft geleid tot emails die oproepen alles van Nederland te boycotten. Waar de film over gaatweet de Nigeriaanse Kadira Ahmed, Managing Editor of Dele Olojede newspaper Next, niet, zo schrijft ze in onderstaand commentaar op de Nigeriaanse site 234next. Ze weet zelfs niet of de film werkelijk bestaat maar zeker is dat veel moslims er goed boos over zijn.

A series of emails have been sent out calling for a total boycott of all things Dutch. The emails appear to have originated from some Muslims who are outraged by the Film 786, allegedly made by a Dutch filmmaker. The movie is supposedly very insulting to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).
I have not seen the movie, although it is not for lack of trying. I have trawled the Internet in search of this movie and although I have stumbled across various sites and chat rooms in which its merits and demerits are discussed, the movie itself and even confirmation that it exists have so far eluded me.
Nonetheless, some Muslims seem to believe in its existence and are sufficiently incensed to have called for the boycott. The idea is to cause maximum economic damage to the Dutch economy. Americans must look forward, Indonesians backward?
President Obama gave an interview earlier this week to an Indonesian television station in lieu of the scheduled trip to that country which was canceled due to the health care vote. In 2008, Indonesia empowered a national commission to investigate human rights abuses committed by its own government under the U.S.-backed Suharto regime “in an attempt to finally bring the perpetrators to justice,” and Obama was asked in this interview: ”Is your administration satisfied with the resolution of the past human rights abuses in Indonesia?”
Obama replied: “We have to acknowledge that those past human rights abuses existed. We can’t go forward without looking backwards…”
When asked last year about whether the United States should use similar tribunals to investigate its own human rights abuses, as well his view of other countries’ efforts (such as Spain) to investigate those abuses. Obama said: “I’m a strong believer that it’s important to look forward and not backwards, and to remind ourselves that we do have very real security threats out there…” read on>>

Danielle: “Kerels vinden het aanvankelijk geweldig. Ze vinden het wel lekker om het te doen op een bankje in een park, in het bos, op het strand of in een auto. Maar na een tijdje raken ze het beu, zeker wanneer het regent. En dus dumpen ze me.”
Jammer is wel dat er natuurlijk gelijk weer een psychologe opstaat die er een stokje voor gaat steken. Catherine Townsend: ”Ik zou haar aanraden het eerst proberen te doen in half afgesloten ruimtes, om dan naar een echte binnenruimte over te gaan. En dat hoeft echt niet allemaal op dezelfde dag. Nederland is een land gebaseerd op tolerantie, dat een wereldmacht werd dankzij de avontuurlijke geest en de constante drang naar vernieuwing. Dat schrijft de Koreaan Hoh Kui-seek vandaag in de JoongAng Daily. Korea kwam voor het eerst in contact met de Nederlanders toen Jan Weltevree en Hendrick Hamel met hun VOC-schepen in de zeventiende eeuw strandden op de Koreaanse kust. Een goede eerste indruk dus. De Koreaanse koning, Hyojong van Joseon, wilde de vreemdelingen niet laten gaan en pas na dertien jaar lukte het Hendrik Hamel en zeven anderen te ontsnappen naar Japan in een klein bootje. Hamel beschreef zijn ontsnapping in eendagboek. Gezegd moet worden dat Hamel heeftgenoten van zijn verblijf aldaar:
“Aen lant was alles in roer, ten leeck geen man die geen een of twee houwers op sij hadde; wij sagen malcanderen met bedroefden ogen aen; denckende dat onse cost nu al gecoockt was.”
En dat blijkt wederzijds te zijn geweest:
“Zij hadden blauwe ogen, grote neuzen en geel haar en ze knippen het haar kort. Sommigen scheren hun bakkebaarden en houden hun snorren. Amsterdam was also home to one of the world’s first stock exchanges.
The economic history of the Netherlands could be summed up as “a small country that achieved great success.” The country of 1.5 million became a great power thanks to adventurous spirits who took to the sea and the constant pursuit of innovation. The vessels they built could load more cargo, and the joint stock company system helped diversify business risks. De vulkaan Eyjafjallajokull in het gebied van de gelijknamige gletsjer, 120 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Reykjavik, werd dit weekeinde actief. Lava begon te stromen uit een scheur in de vulkaan en er ontstond een enorme rookontwikkeling. Het gevaar bestaat dat nu ook de veel grotere vulkaan Katla gaat uitbarsten. In de laatste duizend jaar volgde Katla telkens de vulkaan Eyjafjallajokull. Dat kan grote lokale en globale gevolgen hebben, aldus IJslandse vulkanologen. Een uitbarsting van de Laki vulkaan in 1783 wordt verantwoordelijk gehouden voor mislukte oogsten en hongersnood in grote delen van de wereld waaronder in Egypte en Frankrijk en daarmee voor de Franse Revolutie. De geruchten gaan dat Wouter Bos al op weg is naar IJsland om de schade van een eventuele vulkaanuitbarsting te claimen.
Iceland is preparing for an even more powerful and potentially destructive volcano after a small eruption at the weekend shot red-hot molten lava high into the sky.
The original fear was that the volcano had erupted directly underneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, which could have caused glacial melt, flooding and mudslides. Instead, the volcano blew inbetween Eyjafjallajokull and the larger Myrdalsjoekull glacier. However, the danger is that the small volcano is just the beginning and that it will trigger the far more powerful volcano of Katla, which nestles beneath Myrdalsjoekull. read on>> (more…)
(AP), 3 hours ago, Nairobi, Kenya - Somali pirates searching for a high-seas victim Wednesday made a fast approach in two small skiffs toward the Dutch warship HNLMS Tromp. A spokesman for the force, Cmdr. John Harbour, explained that, after a counseling session with qualified psychologists, the Dutch personnel fired several warning shots at the skiffs. Eventually the Dutch warship tracked down the skiffs and a third suspected mothership, finding ammunition and rocket-propelled grenades onboard.
