Responding to the claim by Pope Benedict XVI that the bones of St Paul have been found in Rome, a Dutch expert, Rengert Elburg, said Monday this can never be proven.
Elburg, an expert on archaeological study of old bones and organic remains for the government of the German state of Saxony, told the German Press Agency dpa in an interview, ‘It’s impossible to establish that it’s him.’

The Netherlands ranks among the top six of the world’s most-open economies, according to a study released Tuesday by the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics. The study analyzed the importance of international trade in the Dutch economy over the last three decades. In 2008, international trade contributed 77 per cent to the Dutch gross domestic product (GDP), the study said, up from 43 per cent in 1969. read on here>> (more…)

Recent confessions of affairs by elected officials fly in face of Americans’ normative standards.

Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina and Sen. John Ensign of Nevada — the latest elected officials to admit publicly to having extramarital affairs — are flying in the face of public opinion if they expect to find Americans condoning their dalliances. Gallup’s latest Values and Beliefs update, conducted last month, shows that 92% of Americans say married men and women having an affair is morally wrong, garnering more opprobrium than any other moral issue tested in the poll.

Iraqi forces assume formal control of Baghdad and other cities on Tuesday after American troops hand over security in urban areas in a defining step toward ending the U.S. combat role in the country.
Fireworks, not bombings, colored the Baghdad skyline late Monday, and thousands attended a party in a park where singers performed patriotic songs. Loudspeakers at police stations and military checkpoints played recordings of similar tunes throughout the day, as Iraqi military vehicles decorated with flowers and national flags patrolled the capital.
“All of us are happy — Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds on this day,” Waleed al-Bahadili said as he celebrated at the park. “The Americans harmed and insulted us too much.”

Tijdens een fietstocht door Vlaanderen zetten we ons in Tongeren op een klein terras in de zon. Er tegenover is de begijnhofkerk waar, onder een kruisbeeld aan de buitenmuur, een bord hangt: “Aenschouw o sondaer die ghij sijt, wat Christus voor uw boosheit lijdt.”
Terwijl onze koffie en appelgebak worden gebracht, arriveert een klasje van anderhalf dozijn 8 à 9 jarigen – schuchtere knapen en prille maagdelijnen – gedirigeerd door een wat pinnige lerares.
“Gaat hier eens zitten.” beveelt ze. Het grut gaat om haar heen op het straatje zitten. Ze priemt haar vinger naar het beeld van de gemartelde heiland: “En schrijft op wat daar staat.” Braaf buigen ze zich over hun schrijfblokjes. Op het terras prikken wij in ons appelgebak en volgen belangstellend het gebeuren.
De lerares gaat onderwijl verder: “Voor wie is die tekst geschreven?”
“God?” aarzelt er eentje.
“Nee” snerpt ze “Nee, voor ons. Da’s voor ons!”

The number of elderly people with an alcohol problem in the Netherlands is rising, according to a report released on Monday. The report was prepared by the Dutch Stichting Informatie Verslavingszorg - a national addiction foundation - and the Trimbos Netherlands Institute for Mental Health and Addiction.

LONDON - The makeshift sidewalk memorial, the kind that has become a familiar feature of celebrity death, was right there on Shaftesbury Ave. Sunday, in front of the Lyric Theatre. The Lyric is where they have been staging a Michael Jackson tribute show here called “Thriller Live,” featuring music of his that goes all the way back to when he was the magical, gifted kid out in front of the Jackson 5.
Only now “Thriller Live” is the only Michael Jackson show in London, where Jackson was supposed to begin his comeback tour next month. Everywhere else the real show is watching the bloodsuckers from Jackson’s life looking for ways to keep scoring off him in death the way they did in life. read on here>> (more…)

Last night, I noted the sudden and obviously hypocritical concern about detainee abuse emerging from The Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb now that the transfer of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit by the Palestinians to Egypt appears imminent and it’s time to exploit his detention. In service of that same mission, Goldfarb also tries to attribute this deal for Shalit’s release to the heroism of Benjamin Netanyahu, excitedly claiming that, if it happens, it will cause the Israeli Prime Minister’s “approval numbers [to] skyrocket, further undermining Obama’s leverage over him” (i.e., Israel will be able to continue to expand settlements on land that isn’t theirs).
