Here are some facts about the reality of the Afghan war. When will President Obama accept that it’s not winnable. That is, not winnable by military force. Like most of the wars the United States of America has fought in Asia.
Afghanistan is America’s longest war. And it’ doesn’t seem that the U.S. is ready to see it for what it is, considering this kind of statements:
President Obama said Thursday that “we are on track to achieve our goals” in the Afghan war and to “start reducing our forces next July.”
That doesn’t seem correct when we look at the bleak conclusion of the National Intelligence Estimates, last year. That kind of optimism is in reality just undermining the administration’s credibility. Have a look at what the New York Times had to say in november last year:

The United States is trying to suppress publication of any information coming out of the Wikileaks publications. A totally useless effort of course. The American internet company Amazone announced it was cutting WikiLeaks off yesterday only 24 hours after being contacted by the staff of Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security. Also in other parts of the world, like China and across the Arab Middle East, places where authoritarian governments tightly control the media, virtually all mention of the documents was suppressed.
The Internet, of course, is rendering decrepit would-be petty tyrants like Lieberman impotent and obsolete: WikiLeaks moved its website to a Swedish server and was accessible again within hours.
If anyone is aware of some sort of campaign to boycott Amazon’s web services over its capitulation to Joe Lieberman — and there should be one — please alert Glenn Greenwald to it. He wants to promore boycotting Amazone for being so servile to the American government.

Curious it is that Republicans, hardliners, and neoconservatives anxious to proclaim “American exceptionalism” - which, stripped down, means that America can and should do anything it wants around the world because it’s the greatest - are now trumpeting the fact that, according to Wikileaks at least, various leaders of the Arab Gulf kleptocracies are calling for the United States to attack Iran.
You’d think that the U.S could safely ignore, and privately laugh at, the policy recommendations made by kings, royal sheiks and emirs of the gulf states. The leaders of these nations—and most of them, such as Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE, really don’t deserve to be called “nations” - are anyway for the most part puppets of the United States. Three of them (Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain) are essentially US-occupied territories, hosting American ground troops, naval forces and an air force base; and the fourth, the UAE, is not really populated by its own citizens but by imported South Asians, Iranians and others, and made up of a series of family-ruled sheikhdoms run by utterly corrupt and degenerate, inbred gangsters. Ik raakte vanochtend in een wegrestaurantje aan de praat met een moslimman van 46. Hij keek me aan en zei dat ik een probleem had. Ik vond het knap dat hij dat kon zien, want ik wist nog van niets.
Ik vroeg hem wat over zichzelf te vertellen en hij zei dat hij vrachtwagenchauffeur was, maar al twee maanden werkeloos, omdat het contract van zijn baas afgelopen was. Hij kreeg geen uitkering en ging af en toe wat geld van de bank halen om daar met zijn gezin van te leven. Die hopeloze toestand spookte de hele dag door zijn hoofd en hij kon aan niets anders meer denken.
Ik kreeg de indruk dat zijn probleem iets groter was dan het mijne, wat dat ook zijn moge. Ik vroeg hem of hij wel eens alcohol had gedronken en hij zei dat hij nog nooit een druppel alcohol had aangeraakt, hoewel hij vroeger op een ambassade had gewerkt waar drank te krijgen was. Hij had geen idee hoe het smaakte. Ik had geen reden om aan zijn verhaal te twijfelen en verbaasde me over zoveel gehoorzaamheid en volgzaamheid. (more…)
Maleisië is een heerlijk land, bijna altijd mooi weer, prachtige natuur, democratische bestuursvorm, geen schrijnende armoede, weinig criminaliteit, maar het is overduidelijk wel een moslimland. Nu heb je daar als toerist niet al te veel last van, de meisjes met hun tuttige hoofddoekjes lonken en flirten net zo fanatiek als hun leeftijdgenoten in niet-moslimlanden, een paar keer per dag klinkt vanuit de minaretten wat gejammer, maar dat duurt meestal maar een paar minuten en als de imam toevallig een mooie stem heeft, sta ik zelfs met plezier te luisteren. Echter, als je tegen het eind van de middag of ’s-avonds aan tafel zin krijgt in een koud biertje dan kom je vaak van een koude kermis thuis.
Het is alleen verkrijgbaar in de grotere hotels en daar kom ik niet en verder in Chinese restaurants of winkels en daar kom ik dus regelmatig. Ik ben zeker geen alcoholist, maar ik zal bij een bordje nasi niet snel een glaasje jus bestellen. De Chinezen kunnen weliswaar ook rijst bakken, maar ik wil ook wel eens echt Maleisisch of Indiaas eten en dan ben je veroordeeld tot vruchtensap of water. (more…)

Lang geleden was JdeW voor het eerst in Vietnam om er wat stukjes over te schrijven. De persdienst in Hanoi had mij daarbij een gids toegewezen die iedere stap op de voet volgde. Uiteraard opdat ik geen, in de ogen van de Vietnamese autoriteiten, stoute dingen zou doen. Het toeval wil dat deze begeleider een heel erg mooie, jonge vrouw was. De oudere gidsen kenden eigenlijk alleen maar Russisch, vandaar. U begrijpt… het kon JdeW niet stout genoeg zijn.
Haar standaard reactie op vrijwel al mijn voorstellen was: ‘oh what a pity’.
“Oh wat a pity, daar kunt u vandaag niet heen.”
“Oh what a pity, de minister is niet beschikbaar.”
“Oh what a pity, daar mag u niet aankomen.”
Ik zie haar nog voor me, ze reikte net tot mijn schouder. Tanh was haar naam. Ze was altijd uitgedost in een spijkerbroek en een Amerikaanse baseballpet. De centrale bank: spijkerbroek; mausoleum van Ho Chi Minh: baseballpet.
Op een avond vroeg ik wat haar naam betekende.
Tanh: “Die naam heeft mijn vader mij gegeven toen ik nog in mijn moeders buik zat. Het was op het einde van de oorlog en hij was dokter aan het front. Tanh betekent ‘Overwinning’. Oh what a pity… mijn vader heeft nooit Tanh mogen zien.”
Vroeger waren er geen fastfood restaurants inAzië enook geen dikke mensen. Sinds een jaar of vijftien rukken de McDonald’s en KFC’s onstuitbaar op. In een stad als Bangkok kom je ze nu op bijna iedere straathoek tegen. En hun slachtoffers… veel te dikke Thais. Gaat Vietnam ook die kant op?

De Indiase politie heeft een Pakistaanse spion gearresteerd. Op het lijf van de spion waren met rode inkt een Pakistaans adres en een telnummer geschreven.
Tijdens de ondervraging gaf de spion alles toe met een aanhoudend roekoeroekoe. Het betreft namelijk een duif. Volgens de Indiase politie geen gewone duif maar een postduif. Het dier werd gevangen in de betwistte provincie Punjab. India neemt het zekere voor het onzekere en laat de duif bewaken. Ondanks protesten van Amnesty International mag de vogel geen bezoek ontvangen. Advocaat Bram Moskowicz heeft al laten weten het te druk te hebben met Eva Jinek.

Pakistan Daily - Indian police are holding a pigeon under armed guard after it was caught on an alleged spying mission for arch rivals Pakistan. The white bird was found in India’s Punjab state, which borders Pakistan, and taken to a police station. JdeW heeft palmen, bananenbomen, diverse hem onbekende (vrucht)bomen, veel gras met bloemetjes, een klein vijvertje met visjes en donderkopjes die als kikker het liefst in JdeW zijn gympies kruipen. Verder veel vogels waaronder ringmusjes die zo brutaal zijn geworden dat als we de ramen open doen, ze niet om ons huis heen vliegen maar er door heen.

JdeW’s kinderen gaan naar een internationale school. Dus ik ken ze een beetje, die kinderen uit Azië. De uitkomst van onderstaand onderzoek - Koreaanse kinderen niet gelukkig - verbaast me dan ook niets. Ik zie dagelijks de strakke koppies van de speelkameraadjes van mijn kinderen. Wat die allemaal niet van school en ouders moeten doen. Vanaf hun zesde krijgen kinderen hier al minstens een uur huiswerk per dag mee van school. Minstens! Schoorvoetend doen wij daarin mee. Aangezien veel kinderen ook nog eens ruim een uur naar school moeten reizen, zijn ze gedurende de week dus vrijwel alleen met school bezig. En in het weekeinde krijgen Koreaanse, Japanse en Chinese kinderen stuk voor stuk bijles in hun eigen taal, sommige ook nog eens bijscholing in een zwak vak en verder allemaal piano-, dans-, zang- en/of acteerlessen. Ik doe dat allemaal niet of nauwelijks.
Op onze internationale school kun je korting krijgen als je academisch uitblinkt. Wij hebben die korting niet. Mijn kinderen kennen het systeem van Mendelejeff nog niet uit hun hoofd. Ook konden ze op hun zesde geen pianosonate van Mozart ten gehore brengen. Toch hebben ze korting gekregen. En wel omdat ze uitzonderlijk vrolijk zijn en sociaal uitblinken.
Zo werd deze week het geld van de juf van Bo gestolen. Mijn oudste dochter organiseerde direct een inzameling bij haar klasgenootjes. De opbrengst hield niet over. Mogelijk omdat er zoveel Chinezen in haar klas zitten. En de juf van de jongste zei toen ze ziek was. “I miss her. Bibi makes me laugh every day. She is so stinking funny!”
Dat telt ook, meent JdeW.

Don’t clog up our feng shui, property giant says.
One of Hong Kong’s biggest property companies has given a Dutch consulate’s exhibition of clogs the boot - because it says the wooden footwear is bad for feng or fung shui….
The Cheung Kong Center said the wooden shoes show would cause bad luck, because the Cantonese word for shoes — hai — sounds similar to a sigh of exasperation, the English-language paper said.
“Cheung Kong Center rejected the exhibition because of the Chinese meaning of wooden shoes. I don’t understand. It is difficult to explain as I don’t know how to say shoes in Chinese,” an unnamed member of the consulate told the South China Morning Post.
The exhibition, part of an effort to promote Dutch culture, which will raise money for Chinese children, is now being held at another tower in Hong Kong, the paper said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The husband and son of murdered Kelantan woman A. Fairos Ahmad Sulaiman are believed to be living in a small town called Benthuizen in Holland.
Information received by lawyers for Fairos’ family revealed that her Dutch husband Lambertus Den Dulk also known as Mohd Lufti Abdullah and their 3-year-old son, Johan Sebastian, have been living in the town since they returned from Thailand.
Lawyer Noraishah Shamsuddin said the father and son were spotted in the town of 3,000 people.
