Sarah Palin wants Americans to speak openly about what happened in Tucson, Arizona: the shooting of Democrat Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was pictured on the targetlist on Sarah Palins website. She said so today in a ‘heartfelt’ video where she calls for the open discussion of ideas no matter how objectionable they might be..
But look at this screenshot of het video!!!

Note that Palin released her ‘heartfelt’ video at exactly 4:00AM Alaska time…just the right moment to take the news cycle by storm, and make today be about her.
But at the same time she didn’t have the courage to take questions from even her biggest promotor Fox News about her message. Instead, she hid behind a TelePrompter, secure in the knowledge that she would not have to respond to a single question about her speech. Now that’s political courage, eh?

Maarten Engwirda (D66) is een dapper man. Vijftien jaar was hij lid van de Europese Rekenkamer (27 leden) en nu hij een weekje weg is, heeft hij alle zaken eens op een rijtje gezet en komt hij met dit.

“Belangenbehartiging voor het eigen land door verschillende leden van de Rekenkamer. Hun redenering was: stel je voor dat de fout bestede bedragen bekend worden. Straks moet mijn land het nog terugbetalen ook.”

Dit gaat om miljoenen onterecht uitgekeerde subsidies op het gebied van zuivel en olijfolie aan landen als Frankrijk en Italië. En dit:

“Mijn toenmalige Italiaanse collega wilde de Rekenkamer het recht ontzeggen kritiek te uiten op het Italiaanse rechtssysteem dat de misstanden had moeten voorkomen. Terwijl dat systeem aan alle kanten faalde.”

Een onthutste minister Kees de Jager van Financien reageerde vandaag dat de situatie sindsdien wel sterk is verbeterd. Dat is knap aangezien Engwirda nog geen twee weken weg is bij de Rekenkamer.

EU financial watchdog ’systemically sabotaged fraud investigations’

In a reacting to assassination attempt of Democrat representative Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona, Republican Peter King wants to introduce better gun control measures:

Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman’s intentions.

So, as everybody can see, the measure proposed by Republican representative Peter King is aimed at protecting Republican representative Peter King.
The rest of America is on their own.

Nederlanders staan wereldwijd bekend om twee zaken: water en geld. Voor JdeW klopt dat ook, met slechts een kleine variatie: geld als water.
Van water hebben Nederlanders inderdaad veel verstand. Waar ook ter wereld een probleem is met water, zie je een Nederlandse bedrijf dat het moet oplossen. Following the tragic shooting of several people, including Democratic Representative Giffords many Americans ask how someone who displayed so many obvious characteristics of mental instability was able to buy so easily a semi-automatic firearm. It is illegal to sell firearms to the mentally ill. Even in Arizona. But conservatives like David Frum dismiss renewed calls for gun control.
Frum writes that the incident should “remind us why we regulate marijuana.”
Assasin Loughner (22) is suspected of being a marijuana user. Frum writes that there may be “renewed pressure to control the weapons that committed the crime,” but instead chooses to place blame on the “trend these days toward a more casual attitude and easier access to…drugs”: [read on] (more…)

Gisteren werd de Democratische vertegenwoordiger van het Amerikaanse Congress, Gabrielle Giffords, neergeschoten door een 22-jarige man die ook op twintig andere mensen schoot waarbij hij zes doodde. De verdachte is Jared Lee Loughner - in de VS lezen ze wel de rechten voor maar gebruiken ze geen initialen. Op het internet hield hij scheldpartijen tegen de Amerikaanse overheid.
De Politieke Actie Commissie (PAC) van Sarah Palin had tot gisteren een kaart op haar website staan waarin het vizier van een geweer stond gericht op het district van de Congresswoman. Dat omdat ze voor betaalbare gezondheidszorg heeft gestemd voor iedereen. Palin noemde dat een stem voor ‘deathpanels’. Eerder werd het hoofdkwartier van Giffords gevandaliseerd en stafleden van haar aangevallen. Giffords zelf waarschuwde vorig jaar dat het richten van een vizier conseqeunties zou kunnen hebben.
Nu vecht ze voor haar leven na een schot door het hoofd.
Hoe reageert de Republikein Lamar Alexander op een vraag van CNN-reporter Candy Crowley over Palin’s afbeelding op haar website?

CROWLEY: Was it over the line, sort of specifically, since it’s now being talked about everywhere, with Sarah Palin’s web ads about people that she would like to see targeted for political defeat.
ALEXANDER: Well, Candy, I think you’re responsible, by bringing this up, of doing the very thing you’re trying to condemn. You’re making and implying a direct connection between Sarah Palin and what happened. You’re picking out a particular incident. Green diets for daughters, bananas and potatoes for sons?

The Dutch study asked 32 women who already had boys to try a special “little girl diet” high in calcium and magnesium.
This meant eating foods like goat’s cheese salad, vegetable stew and rice pudding. Foods like potatoes and bananas, which have high levels of potassium, that is believed to lead to boys, were restricted.

When would Barack Obama be considered a good leader by the Tea Party? According to teabagger Allen West not by making secret, surprise visits to Afghanistan. Apparently the U.S. president either needs to fly into a battlefield in Afghanistan during broad daylight or maybe even pick up a rifle and join the fight, to be a real leader.
See this interview in the New York Times of Rep. Allen West (R-FL) where he was asked if he considers President Obama to be “a good leader.”
“Not really,” replied the Florida congressman.

NYT: Do you think those in the military respect him?
WEST: I don’t know, you gotta ask guys in the military, but I will tell you this: I think that going in in the middle of the night doesn’t show leadership.
NYT: Are you referring to that recent three-hour trip to a base in Afghanistan? He needs to consider his own safety, doesn’t he?
WEST: Leaders lead by example, and if I’m asking my young men and women to go out there and put their lives on the line, I should be willing and able to do the exact same thing. As I told my soldiers when I was commander in Iraqin 2003, the most expendable person in our battalion was me.

Handbikester Monique van der Vorst werd afgelopen winter tijdens een trainingskamp aangereden en kon toen ineens weer lopen. Vorig jaar werd ze nog gekozen tot de Gehandicapte Sporter van het jaar en kreeg ze een Jaap Eden-beeldje.
Van der Vorst (26) moet wennen aan haar nieuwe leven. Ze heeft gehuild van geluk en opwinding. Aan de andere kant is ze nu ineens geen topsporter meer, want ze valt niet meer onder de gehandicapten. Ze was de beste handbikester van de wereld en had dat in 2012 met goud op de Paralympics willen bekrachtigen. ,,Ik ben mijn doel, mijn passie kwijt. Ik was gewend strak te leven, altijd de grenzen op te zoeken en mezelf te verbeteren. Trainingskampen, wedstrijden, contact met andere sporters, ondanks dat ik in een rolstoel zat, had ik een superleven. Ik kon alles doen. Natuurlijk heb ik er iets mooiers voor teruggekregen,” stelt ze. “Ik kan opstaan, lopen, mensen weer recht in de ogen kijken. Dat is nog elke dag een onbeschrijflijk gevoel.”

Tea Party politician Andy Harris was elected by enraged American voters to the House in november to continue his fight against the socialist Obama administration. And of course key in his fight was repealing the Health Care Bill Obama managed to get through Congress.
After being elected the teabagger expected to become the leader of the committee which has jurisdiction over public health issues. But he didn’t become president of the Energy and Commerce Committee. In fact, he’s won’t even get to be a member of that committee.
Why? Could it be because of this?

WASHINGTON — Rep.-elect Andy Harris, who campaigned on an anti-Obamacare platform, made news last month when he asked during a freshman orientation class why it would take so long for his government health insurance to kick in. The question, first reported by Politico, has become a running joke here, with David Waldman of the liberal Congress Matters website keeping a daily countdown of how many days Harris must wait “for his sweet, sweet government health care.”
Reigrut said he doubts the negative publicity affected Harris’ chances of getting on the Energy and Commerce Committee, citing the high number of incoming Republican freshmen as a more likely reason.

America is in a constant fight against all evil. Not only elsewhere in the world but also at home, for example in Easton, Pennsylvania. There two girls, Brianna Hawk, 13, and Kayla Martinez, 12, wore bracelets to school on October 28, with the text: I love boobies.
Mind you, with the support of their parents. Maybe because it was Breastcancer Awareness Day in their school.
And then… all hell broke loose.
The bracelets were banned and the girls were suspended a day-and-a-half from school for “defiance/disruption/disrespect” and they were forbidden from attending the big middle school dance.

I love Boobies - The Keep A Breast Foundation’s mission is to help eradicate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support.

And, being America, of course they all ended up in court. There the brave school district lawyer John E. Freund III had the task of interrogating the two dirty girls.

“That phrase, ‘I Love Boobies,’ do you see any other meaning to that? Say especially from boys’ perspective?” Freund asked 13-year-old Brianna Hawk.
“No.” Hawk said.
“Do you thinks boys would have a natural attraction to girls breasts?” Freund asked.
“Yes,” Hawk said.
“So couldn’t it possibly mean something else?”
“No,” insisted Hawk, because in the context of the bracelet that simply was not possible, she said.
Kayla Martinez, 12, conceded some boys could behave in a less than mature fashion. “But they”, she said dismissively, “are boys who act like they are two.”

Easton (PA) Doesn’t ♥ Boobies or Free Speech

At Easton Area Middle School, they choose to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month as well as a special awareness day on October 28, at which point all hell broke loose. See, teachers had seen See, teachers had seen “I ♥ Boobies!” bracelets floating around, and “though the bracelets had yet to cause a disruption, schooldirector DiVietro said, teachers warned that they might in the future.”

Not very long from now there will be two armies in the United States. One army for straights and one army for gays. These armies will have segregated sleeping facitities. And there will be different bathroom facilities and all those kind of things. That is the opinion of Republican military expert representative Mike Conaway.
Well I’d say America is lucky if they can keep it down to two armies.
Because of course men and women soldiers can’t bunk together, and gays and straight soldiers can’t. Let’s see, let’s make a list of future armies in the U.S. One army for straight men, one for straight women, one for gay men and one for lesbian women.
So obviously it’s not gonna be easy to move around on an American army base in the future. That’s why the military has started to prepare special tourguides to explain exactly who is allowed to go where to sleep, pee and shit.

Very soon there will be segregation of gay and straight troops in the U.S.

Toeristen trekken weer massaal naar de Egyptische badplaats Sharm-el-Sheikh. En dat is allemaal te danken aan een dronken Servier. Dat meldt het Macedonisch nieuwsagentschap MINA. Het bericht is overgenomen door kranten wereldwijd.
Dragan Stevic had hem na een nacht doordrinken aardig hangen. Hij besloot met vrienden af te zakken naar het strand om af te koelen. Daar stond een hoge springplank die eerder op de dag door duikers was gebruikt.
“Dragan gaf me zijn biertje en liep naar de plank. Het ging zo snel dat we hem niet konden tegenhouden”, vertelde een vriend. Hij sprong maar er kwam geen plons. Door stom toeval kwam hij vol op een haai terecht. ’s Ochtends vond de Egyptische politie een dode haai op het strand.
Stevic was zich na zijn heldendaad van geen kwaad bewust. Hij slaagde erin om tot aan de kust te zwemmen waar hij zich beklaagde over een pijnlijke enkel.

Nog geen twee van de tien Amerikanen (zestien procent) gelooft dat de mens zich heeft ontwikkeld zonder enige hulp van God. Vier van de tien Amerikanen gelooft dat God zo’n tienduizend jaar geleden de mens heeft geschapen als het misbaksel dat het nu nog altijd is. En zo’n 38 procent gelooft in een compromis: een beetje God, een beetje evolutie. Dat blijkt uit een peiling die Gallup Poll in december hield onder Amerikanen.

Four in ten Americans, slightly fewer now than in years past, believe God created humans in their present form about 10,000 years ago. A little less (38 percent) believe God guided a process by which humans developed over millions of years from less advanced life forms, while 16%, up slightly from years past, believe humans developed over millions of years, without God’s involvement. Penelope Cruz, the actress famous for her sensuous roles and intriguing relationships with Hollywood co-stars, is pregnant. Nothing wrong with that. What is wrong, according to rightwing Americans and Fox News, is that she decided to give birth in the United States.
That prompted Fox News Latino (in a story removed from the site later) to claim that she was “having an anchor baby.” Turns out that Fox News even writes its Latino site from the perspective of a white Tea Party activist. But it’s not just that the term is offensive. In Penelope’s case, it’s absolutely wrong.
True she’s a little like brownish… but she’s not Latino, she’s Spanish.

What is an ‘anchor baby’?
The term originates in the notion that undocumented immigrants seek specifically to have children born in the United States. The logic goes that those children will automatically be citizens because of the birthright citizenship clause in the 14th amendment. [read on] (more…)

UPDATE, december 16th, 2010 at 4:54 pm - Het blog Drasties lag er vandaag een uur uit in Azië. Elders mogelijk ook, dat weet ik (JdeW) niet. Wat er precies is gebeurd, weet ik ook niet maar ik neem aan dat het te maken had met de publicatie op drasties van een geheime WikiLeaks ‘cable’ in het artikel:

WikiLeaks lekt harde waarheid over Nederland - we zijn geweldig.

Daarin stond de mening van de scheidende Amerikaanse ambassadeur Clifford Sobel over Nederland. Niets dan goeds over ons land overigens, dus daar kan het niet aan gelegen hebben.
Uiteindelijk is deze ’secret cable’ en een deel van het artikel toch maar verwijderd van drasties. De hele ‘cable’ is nog altijd te lezen op de site van de Britse krant The Guardian waar ik hem vandaan had.
Ik kan me niet anders voorstellen dan dat er actie is ondernomen tegen drasties vanwege deze publicatie. Kwam het uit de U.S.A? Was het de CIA?, de FBI?, de DHS?, Bromsnor?
Al met al ben ik er een beetje trots en een beetje bezorgd.
Bezorgd omdat ik drasties toch wel graag in de lucht wil houden. Trots op het feit dat drasties zoveel echte Amerikaanse patriotten in beweging heeft gebracht.

Voor de beste carchases moet je naar Amerika, dat weet iedereen. Een geweldige achtervolging vindt tegenwoordig plaats in Fort Worth. Daar worden stadsbussen dagelijks op de hielen gezeten door een truckje.
De bussen zijn atheistisch, het truckje is van God.
Op de bussen staat: ‘Millions of people are - Good without God’.
Op het truckje: ‘I still love you - God’.
Het is de climax in de keiharde ‘War on Christmas’ die in Amerika wordt uitgevochten. De oorlog die er feitelijk omgaat of ‘Gelukkig Kerstfeest’ wordt vervangen door ‘Prettige Feestdagen’ of niet.
Eerlijk gezegd valt me de reactie van de gelovigen wat tegen. Wil je de atheisten echt een klap toebrengen dan moet je ze harder aanpakken.
Je huurt een bus, je zegent de bus, je zet er een groot verlicht kruis op, liefst met Jezus er nog aan. En met deze bus volg je de stadsbus en je biedt aan iedere busreiziger in Fort Worth gratis en voor niks te vervoeren. Moet je zien hoeveel mensen er dan in God geloven.

NYTimes - A public bus rolls by with an atheist message on its side: “Millions of people are good without God.” Seconds later, a van follows bearing a riposte: “I still love you. — God,” with another line that says, “2.1 billion Christians are good with God.”
A clash of beliefs has rattled this city ever since atheists bought ad space on four city buses to reach out to nonbelievers who might feel isolated during the Christmas season … Some ministers organized a boycott of the buses, with limited success. Other clergy members are pressing the Fort Worth Transportation Authority to ban all religious advertising on public buses. And a group of local businessmen paid for the van with the Christian message to follow the atheist-messaged buses around town.

Until Fort Worth, the biggest Christmas conflict was in the New York area, where a billboard war erupted after American Atheists paid more than $20,000 for a sign that showed a picture of a Nativity scene and the message: “You know it’s a myth. This Season, Celebrate Reason!” The Catholic League then erected one on the other side of the Lincoln Tunnel that retorts: “You Know It’s Real. This Season, Celebrate Jesus.”

In this battle for the hearts and minds of commuters, the atheists seem to have been overly belligerent, although it is understandable that they get a little testy this time of year. [read on] (more…)
