Behnam (July 15th, 2008): Ik miste ook o.a. Nederlandse regenbuitjes toen ik 2 jaar terug voor het eerst na 20 jaar terug ging [naar Iran]. Voorlopig blijf ik lekker op safe spelen en ga ik er niet [naar toe]. Onze baby kan niet tegen die zwarte lucht, ik ook niet meer! Hoog op het verlanglijstje uit het thuisland staat dan ook: noon sangak & noon barbari! Vorige week was het weer zo ver, bezoek uit Iran met een verse lading “steenbrood”! Vol geluk, met grote glimmende ogen, zit ze nu vroeger dan anders aan de ontbijttafel. Kleine dingen brengen groot geluk!
Flore (July 13th, 2008): Vanuit de stoet van “Going Dutch” had ik inmiddels vernomen dat zij ontzettend genoten hebben van Iran. Mijn “schoonzus” rijdt ook mee (in een stoere jeep, geen luxe in de verkeersjungle van met name Teheran) en is zeer positief. Uiteraard heb ik haar voorafgaand aan de reis “gewaarschuwd” voor de hartelijkheid en gastvrijheid van Iraniers, de adembenemende vergezichten en de eeuwenoude cultuur!

Things I learned today about democracy

Here’s what I learned today about democracy and ideology as a result of my debate with Ed Kilgore and having read the comments to the piece I wrote about targeting Blue Dogs:

• If you believe in the Fourth Amendment, an end to the Iraq War, the rule of law for government and corporate criminals, a ban on torture, Congressional approval before the President can attack Iran, and the preservation of habeas corpus rights, then you’re a fringe, dogmatic Far Leftist ideologue, the kind who ruined the Democratic Party in 1968 and wants to do so again.
• Even though the country is overwhelmingly against the Iraq War and intensely dislikes George Bush, it’s necessary for Congressional Democrats to support the Iraq War and accommodate George Bush’s demands so that they can remain popular and be re-elected.
• If you oppose politicians who support laws that you think are destructive and wrong, then you’re an intolerant purist who hates dissent and doesn’t believe in democracy.

Wallonie begint blijkbaar in te zien dat de geldstroom uit Vlaanderen binnenkort op gaat drogen. Vandaar dat de Walen steeds meer de blik richten op Parijs. In de laatste zes maanden is het percentage Walen dat zich wil aansluiten bij Frankrijk gestegen van 29 naar 49 procent. Beter bewijs dat zelfs de Walen inzien dat ze het zelf niet kunnen, is er niet. En in Frankrijk zijn ze welkom. Zestig procent van de Fransen is gaarne bereid ze op te nemen. De Vlamingen daarentegen blijven halsstarrig weigeren (tweederde) zich aan te sluiten bij Nederland. Tot Geert Wilders premier van Nederland is geworden uiteraard, want dan moeten ze wel.

WHILE WALLOONS KEEN TO JOIN FRANCE, FLEMISH WON’T JOIN NETHERLANDS.

Almost one out of two French-speaking Belgians would like to join France if their country splits up, a new survey says, amid a deepening political crisis in the host-state of the European Union’s top institutions.
Forty nine percent of people in the south-lying Belgian region of Wallonia said they would support “rattachment” - a re-joining - with France in the event of a break-up with the northern Dutch-speaking region of Flanders.
The figure shows a huge jump from 29 percent six months ago, even though just 23 percent of Walloons believe the country might actually fall apart, an Ifop poll for Belgian and French papers Le Soir and La Voix du Nord found.
On the French side, 60 percent of respondents would like to join-up with their Belgian neighbours, up from 54 percent in previous surveys. The majority in favour is even higher in bordering regions such as Pas-de-Calais.

WHERE WILL THE THAKSIN’S GO FROM HERE?

No street protests, just a couple of noisy supporters armed with roses and a quiet Thaksin family on the court benches.
Many in Thailand quietly cheer the conviction of Thaksin’s wife Potjaman to three years in jail for tax evasion. And now the appeals will start, with the Thaksin’s, most probably, somewhere far away. Because the case against Potjaman was just a testcase of what awaits former premier Thaksin. This sentence paves the way for similar rulings in at least three serious court cases against him.
So where will they go.
Britain is pretty safe for the owner of the footballclub Manchester City. He can fight extradition from there. But the most likely place where the Thaksin family is going to stay is Hong Kong. Thaksin recently bought a splendid home there and China has no extradition treaty with Thailand. And since his whole family is originally from China, it’s likely that is where they will go back to.

Poll: Americans would rather not live next to Limbaugh or O’Reilly.

A new poll put out by U.S. News and World Report asked respondents, “You just rented a vacation home on Martha’s Vineyard where the political and media elite go. Who is the last person you want as a summer neighbor?” A majority (53 percent) said right wing talker Rush Limbaugh. Fox News blowhard Bill O’Reilly came in second at 20 percent while MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann (14 percent) and Chris Matthews (13 percent) rounded out the bottom half.

En er is geen uitweg volgens Clingendael. De olieprijs blijft de komende tijd - ondanks wat verneukeratieve dipjes - gewoon stijgen. Mainstream Dutch analysts foresee severely oil supply constrained world in 2010.

An important Dutch energy institute, the Clingendael International Energy Program (CIEP), recently published a report that confirms most of the conclusions about the oil market reached over the years at the oildrum. That the floor price of oil is now 110 dollars per barrel, that supply will not rise beyond 100-105 million b/d in the coming decades, that there will be an oil supply constraint for most of the next decade, that there are insufficient quantities of alternative fuels available and that thus demand destruction is inevitable. CIEP is especially important because it is endorsed by amongst others BP, Shell Netherlands, Total E&P Netherlands, three Dutch Ministries, Wintershall, Vopak Oil Europe Middle East and several Dutch energy companies. “This outlook of new scarcity is now exacerbated by the fact that not only available supply will determine what amount of demand can be satisfied; it will also bring about a new allocation of the available oil due to a lack of adequate supply growth compared with demand. In practice this means that demand rationing will be required in the OECD countries and particularly in the US, in order to accommodate growth in the newly developing countries, notably China and India. Different fuel prices for end-consumers in the different countries will be the dominant factor behind this ‘oil redistribution’.”

Climate change is caused by global warming and is alarming many nations. Dire predictions by many experts say that sea levels will rise by as much as five feet or more by the end of the century. Extreme and unpredictable weather patterns and heavier rainfall are becoming evident. Unfortunately, many are not technically or financially capable of coping with the impending disaster - except the Dutch.
The Dutch, who have been the masters in taming the ocean, are now finding ways to climate-proof their country, The Netherlands.
Dealing with rising tides is nothing new to the Dutch as they have been doing it since the Roman times when they built their first drainage canals to turn swamp into agricultural land. By the 1400s the Dutch had harnessed water pumps into windmills, thus expanding larger tracts of land from the sea.

I am a Unitarian…
This is a difficult post for me to write.. I am ashamed to admit that my first, overwhelming emotion was intense anger - not so much at Jim Adkisson, the man who walked into a Unitarian church in Knoxville and opened fire on innocent people, killing two and injuring eight more. That … is not an uncommon event these days.
What is, however, was his target - Unitarians.
Members of a church renown for its pacifism, compassion and tolerance.
We welcome anyone - men and women of any colour and nationality, of any religious or ethnic background, or sexuality. We even welcome conservatives.
My anger instead is concentrated on those people who callously use such vulnerable people, stirring up their bigotry and discontent, egging them to acts of violence.
People like Michelle Malkin, Michael Savage, Bill O’Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh
who have made lucrative careers out of liberal-bashing. People who write things like “Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder”, “Let Freedom Ring,” and “The O’Reilly Factor,” - all literature found in Adkisson’s home after the shooting. People like Ann Coulter who advocated attacking liberals with baseball bats. The hate-filled spewage from the right-wing media mavens is and should be held accountable for inciting such acts of violence and murder..

ZES TON ZWARE TANK UITGERUST MET KINDERSTOELTJE (ZES POND).

Een Duitser heeft voor 30.000 euro een Britse Fox tank gekocht.
Het eerste wat de nieuwe eigenaar Joachim Schoeneich deed, was de zes ton zware tank uitrusten met een kinderstoeltje voor zijn tweejarige zoontje. De tank wordt namelijk voornamelijk gebruikt voor de boodschappen en dagtripjes met het gezin.
De tank is tevens uitgerust met een - niet meer werkend - 30 mm geschut en heeft een 7,5 cm dikke bepantsering. Je moet dus aardig je best doen om daar een deuk in te rijden. “We gebruiken de tank voor winkelen en kleine tochtjes”, lacht Joachim uit Neu Anspach. “Een parkeerplaatsje vinden is soms lastig, maar we krijgen wel bij iedere kruising voorrang.” Het enige nadeel is de brandstofconsumptie; het ding rijdt nog minder dan 2 kilometer op een liter benzine! Maar volgens Joachim wordt dit volledig gecompenseerd door de rijervaring.

Zijn mogelijke running mate Joe Lieberman, voorheen democraat maar nu een onafhankelijke neoconservatief, blijft de predikant echter volmondig steunen.
John Hagee is een erg gelovig man die in de 90-tiger jaren zei dat Hitler een jager was, gezonden door God om de Joden uit Europa te verdrijven op weg naar Palestina. Hitler als verlengstuk van God dus, Hitler als Engel zeg maar.

DUTCH BLAME U.S. FOR FAILURE IN WTO TRADE TALKS.

Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade Frank Heemskerk has said U.S. reluctance to make concessions was partly to blame for the collapse of the world trade Doha Round talks.
He said on Tuesday evening that it was difficult to pinpoint exactly why the talks broke down, but he felt that the United States became increasingly less willing to make further concessions in the last few days.
He said that Washington could have done more in the area of cotton production. The World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations broke down Tuesday after nine days of tough talks in Geneva. Grave differences remain between the United States and India on measures to protect farmers in poorer countries against increasing imports.

Tenn. church shooter angry at ‘liberals and gays’.

Knoxville police say that the man who shot two people to death inside a Tennessee Unitarian church yesterday “was frustrated at being unable to find a job and blamed liberals and gays” in an angry letter detailing his violent plans. Authorities said they believed the suspect chose a Unitarian church ‘because of some publicity in the recent past regarding its liberal stance on things‘.

Goodling Screened DOJ Career Candidates For Affiliations With ‘Abortion, Homosexuality, Iraq and WMD’

According today’s report by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), former Justice Department lawyer, Monica Goodling conducted detailed “Internet research on candidates for Department positions…designed to obtain their political and ideological affiliations.”
Apparently drawing on her experience conducting opposition research for the RNC, Goodling used a complex LexisNexis search string to screen candidates for affiliations or statements related to conservative flash points. The search string included such affiliations as homosexuality, abortion, and the 2000 Florida recount. This is the search that Goodling entered into the LexisNexis database to research job candidates:

DUTCH FOREIGN MINISTRY WARNS VISITORS TO KENYA.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry has revised its travel advice for visitors to Kenya. It says travellers should be alert for sexual aggression as well as other forms of violence.
The warning comes in the wake of the rape of five Dutch women, aged between 17 and 25, on a working holiday in Kenya last Thursday. They were repairing a school in the village of Kakamega in western Kenya when ten men armed with spears entered the school compound and forced everyone into a room, where they were robbed and bound. The five Dutch women were then taken to a separate room and raped.
The women worked for Livingston, an organisation based in the Dutch town of Amersfoort. A representative for the organisation said it was “extremely shocked” by what had happened and that the school project would be stopped immediately.

waar ook Paris Hilton zich al voor zijn voeten smeet. De multimiljonair keek naar verluidt niet op een eurocent en braste er doodleuk 12.500 euro op aan wijn, wodka en champagne.

Niki verliet het hotel om acht uur ’s ochtends en kreeg later wel nog een smsje van de voetballer. “Cristiano nodigde me opnieuw uit voor een avondje in de nachtclub, maar hij werd er opnieuw omsingeld door een horde vrouwen. Ik kon het niet opbrengen om opnieuw zijn aandacht te winnen.” Toch heeft Ghazian geen spijt van haar avontuur. “Ik wist waar ik aan begon en ik ben blij dat ik hem een leuke tijd in Los Angeles heb bezorgd.”

Laat ik nu altijd gedacht hebben dat Nederlanders in sporten als wielrennen en schaatsen vele jaren niets wonnen omdat ze niet of nauwelijks aan doping deden. En dan hebben we het vooral over de toppers. Het zal toch meer mensen opgevallen zijn dat met de komst, 10-tallen jaren geleden, van nieuwe dopingmiddelen het Nederlandse wielrennen en schaatsen - en dan vooral het vrouwenschaatsen dat meer baat heeft bij doping dan mannen - gedurende vele jaren volledig weg was. Denk aan vrouwen als Carla Zijlstra die hun hele jeugd top waren maar vervolgens door met doping opgefokte vrouwen uit Oost-Duitsland iedere wedstrijd compleet werden weggereden.
Ook dacht ik dat Nederland weer meetelt in die sporten omdat de controle nu zoveel beter is. Heb ik het mis? Volgens ex schaatser op een wielerforum wel. Ook Nederlandse schaatsers doen volgens hem aan doping. Zie ook enkele reacties.

EX SCHAATSER GAAT UIT DE SCHOOL KLAPPEN OVER DOPING IN SCHAAATSEN.

Nou even een toelichting dan maar. Ik heb een aantal jaren op heel erg hoog niveau geschaatst. Ik post dit nog anoniem, binnenkort zal ik mijzelf bekend maken en ook een boekje open doen over dopinggebruik in de schaatswereld. Want ja daar wordt ook gepakt en ja ook door “ons” nederlanders.
Ik ben zelf drie jaar lang medisch begeleid door Dr Nikkels. Overigens een heel goede arts, die erg eerlijk is en je in eerste instantie absoluut probeert te overtuigen om niet de sprong te wagen, als jullie begrijpen wat ik bedoel.
Ook ik ken de verhalen van Boogerd en Vroemen, sterker nog zij konden wel spul voor mij meenemen uit Oostenrijk als ik zelf weer eens op een trainingskamp was overzee. Ja en de ethiek we praten er niet over en vooral niet over elkaar heeft mij gestoord. Ik ben bezig e.e.a. op papier te zetten omdat ik zelf ook absoluut niet trots ben op wat ik heb gedaan in mijn schaatsende periode. En ja het heeft me geen windeieren gelegd…..dat stukje extra bestaat dus echt! Jammer dat Simon nu zo keihard onderuit gaat, hij heeft genoeg kennis en kunde in huis hoe om te gaan met bepaalde middelen, datzelfde geldt voor Boogerd.
Dus ja de verhalen Vroemen-Boogerd kloppen kan ik met zekerheid zeggen. En ja ik beloof u binnenkort uit het anonieme te treden en de verhalen die ik kwijt wil ook naar buiten te brengen via de daarvoor geschikte media.
Nu ga ik vanmiddag toch weer genieten van een spannende tour!

Het feit dat de poster anoniem is, maar wel claimt een insider te zijn en ‘binnenkort een boek uit zal brengen, waarin hij alles zal vertellen’, wekt bij mij op zijn minst de suggestie dat we hier - voor de zoveelste keer - te maken hebben met iemand die zijn eigen vermoedens en aannames op deze wijze meer gewicht hoopt te geven..

Barack Obama now leads John McCain among national registered voters by a 49% to 40% margin in Gallup Poll Daily tracking conducted July 24-26.
The margin… is the largest for Obama over McCain measured since Gallup began tracking the general election horserace in March.

BARACK OBAMA’S PRAYER REMOVED FROM THE WAILING WALL IN JERUSALEM.

“Lord,

Protect my family and me. Forgive my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will.”

Thus Barack Obama is reported to have prayed at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem this past week. With his hundreds of advisors, media, and handlers in tow Barack was taped by thousands of feet of video glancing up, then down, turning his back to the camera, fumbling around the area of the wall he was standing in front of and then sliding his very neatly penned prayer paper into a slit in the wall, touching and retouching it as if to say, “it’s right here.”
The rabbi who supervises Jerusalem’s Western Wall condemned the removal of a prayer note purportedly written by Sen. Barack Obama, saying the action was “sacrilegious.”
The U.S. presidential candidate visited the holy site early Thursday and placed a note in the cracks of the wall - a custom of visitors. It was subsequently removed from the wall, according to the Israeli newspaper, Ma’ariv, which printed what it said were the contents of the note.
Ma’ariv said a seminary student gave the note to the paper.
