Yesterday, ThinkProgress and other sites called attention to anti-health care protesters who recently hung up an effigy of Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) outside his district office in Salisbury, MD. The city was also the site of a recent symposium on the dangers of “government-run health care,” sponsored by a group called “Patients First,” a project of the lobbyist-funded Americans for Prosperity. Today, DCCC chairman and Maryland congressman Chris Van Hollen put out a statement condemning hanging effigies of federal lawmakers:

This shocking and despicable act of hate has no place in any debate and Republicans must condemn it.
While there should be a robust exchange of ideas about the best way to reform our broken health insurance system, violent expressions are beyond the boundaries of a respectful and civilized debate. With skyrocketing health care costs hurting more families each day, we cannot afford to have this serious debate sidetracked by outrageous displays like this.
The American people are counting on Republicans to join Democrats in a constructive way to help President Obama bring urgently-needed health insurance reform.

Madeline Neumann overleed op elfjarige leeftijd aan een onbehandelde vorm van suikerziekte. Moeder Leilani Neumann vertelde vandaag de jury in de rechtszaal dat zij en haar man ervan overtuigd waren dat God het gezin testte. Ze bracht haar dochter niet naar het hospitaal omdat dat “ongehoorzaam” zou zijn aan de heilige God. Vader Dale Neumann (47) wordt beschuldigd van dood door schuld van zijn elfjarige Madeline Neumann.
“Leilani Neumann explained that God doesn’t want people to harbor disobedience and unforgiveness inside themselves and that there is a spiritual root cause to sickness. She testified that a falling out with former friends and potential business partners, Randy and Althea Wormgoor, might have caused Kara to become ill.”
Al zou hij bestaan. Wie wil er nou in zo’n God geloven? Een God die een onschuldig kind laat lijden en sterven vanwege ruzie tussen de Neumann’s en de Wormgoor’s.

Char krijgt nieuwe show bij RTL-4: Na de ramp!
Char praat in haar nieuwe programma (Endemol) met nabestaanden van mensen die door rampen om het leven zijn gekomen. Het medium zal haar gaven inzetten om met de overleden dierbaren te communiceren. Elke week staat er een andere ramp centraal. Bijvoorbeeld de cafébrand in Volendam, of de vuurwerkramp in Enschede, de Bijlmerramp, de Herculesramp, de aanslag tijdens Koninginnedag, de vliegtuigcrash van afgelopen februari bij Schiphol, maar ook de Tsunami en de vliegramp in Faro.
“In het programma blikken we samen met de nabestaanden, slachtoffers en betrokkenen terug op de ramp. Zij vertellen over hoe hun overleden dierbare in het leven stond, en hoe de ramp hun leven beïnvloed heeft. Hoe hebben zij het plotselinge verlies verwerkt en hoe kregen zij het afschuwelijke nieuws te horen”, aldus RTL.
Pas in 2010 op televisie. Presentatie nog niet bekend.

En een andere vrouw: “Ja, maar laat wel wat ruimte voor de mannen. Die zitten graag wijdbeens.”

De nieuwste campagne van Toerisme Amsterdam waarmee wordt “ingespeeld op het liberale en open karakter van Amsterdam waarbij het niet uitmaakt of je homo of hetero bent” haalt de New York Times. Reden voor het initiatief is dat homoseksuelen ondanks de economische crisis gewoon op vakantie gaan. Zij hebben namelijk relatief veel te besteden, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze geen kinderen hebben. Erg hè, dat juist nu Gay Pride organisator Hugo Braakhuis op het Rembrandtplein in elkaar is geslagen door Marokkaans uitziende mannen plus één blonde Nederlander. Sssst!

To gay in Amsterdam?

In den USA haben schon Dutzende Sexskandale den politischen Alltag erschüttert. In den meisten Fällen stolperten die Amtsträger über ihre eigene Dummheit. Bei einem Sexskandal spielt die Parteizugehörigkeit der involvierten Personen keine Rolle. Die Öffentlichkeit lechzt geradezu nach jedem noch so kleinen Detail. Jüngstes Beispiel: Der Gouverneur von South Carolina und Hoffnungsträger der Republikaner war plötzlich spurlos verschwunden. Das Geheimnis seiner Abwesenheit lüftete sich bald: Mark Sanford gestand Ende Juni bei einer emotionsgeladenen Pressekonferenz eine monatelange aussereheliche Affäre mit einer Argentinierin, die er jeweils in Buenos Aires besuchte.

Discussing the upcoming meeting at the White House between President Obama, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Officer Jim Crowley, Glenn Beck declared that it was “unbelievable” that the three would meet for a “teachable moment” about a sensitive issue in American life. “Who needs to learn what here?” asked Beck, adding, “this president has exposed himself, I think, as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people, or white culture.” Challenged by Brian Kilmeade, Beck then claimed that he wasn’t saying Obama “doesn’t like white people”:

KILMEADE: But listen, you can’t say he doesn’t like white people. David Axelrod’s white, Rahm Emanuel’s his chief of staff, this, I think 70 percent of the people we see everyday are white. Robert Gibbs is white.
BECK: I’m not saying that he doesn’t like white people. I’m saying he has a problem. He has a, this guy is, I believe, a racist. Look the way, look at the things he has been surrounded by.

Jon Stewart is the most trusted newscaster in the U.S. of A., says a time.com click poll of about 9,400 site users taken this week after the death of Walter Cronkite, the longtime CBS news anchor known as “the most trusted man in America.”
Stewart, the anchor, of sorts, of Comedy Central’s satirical and hard-hitting “The Daily Show,” took 44 percent of the vote. Next came actual news anchors Brian Williams (NBC, with 29 percent), Charlie Gibson (ABC, 19) and Katie Couric (CBS, 7).

Jon Stewart gets Kristol to concede government can provide ‘first-class health care’.
Last night on The Daily Show, host Jon Stewart peppered right-wing pundit Bill Kristol with questions about why he is opposed to health care reform that includes a public health insurance option. Why is government-run health care “good enough for the military,” but “not good enough for the people of America?” Stewart asked.
Kristol — who has urged conservative activists and Republicans to “resist the temptation” to work with Democrats in crafting health reform and instead “go for the kill” — responded that the military “deserves it,” but the American people do not:

This evening, the House passed a resolution sponsored by Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) that commemorates Hawaii’s 50th anniversary as a U.S. state by a vote of 378-0. The resolution also contains this provision: “Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii,” a measure that some GOP members may have had trouble supporting. read on here>> (more…)

A group called “Patients First,” a project of the lobbyist-funded Americans for Prosperity, has been going around the country and hosting tea parties in opposition to “government-run health care.” Last week, they held a symposium in Salisbury, MD, and warned about the dangers of “socialized” medicine. Yesterday, they decided to protest outside Democratic Rep. Frank Kratovil’s office, even though he hasn’t yet come out in favor of a public option. Protesters even hung up Kratovil in effigy.

[..]That’s what matters: what neoconservatives believe. And what they believe is the virtue of political lies when spouted by certain people (themselves) in service of certain goals (their own), and relatedly, the complete absence of any limits on what they can do in pursuit of those “noble” goals.[..]

Bill Kristol condemns lying for political ends: Seriously

On Fox News yesterday, NPR’s Juan Williams — who, just by the way, dutifully spouts GOP talking points more reliably than any Fox commentator other than Karl Rove — condemned President Obama for telling ”lies” about the Gates controversy. That prompted this observation from Bill Kristol, in which he head-pattingly quoted Williams:

Amid all the blather about “teachable moments,” I don’t recall anyone else making this simple but profound observation: “You can’t have a teachable moment if it’s based on a lie.” Another way of putting it might be to say that it’s not a “moment” that’s teachable, it’s the truth that’s teachable.
So a moment in which everyone colludes to obscure the truth (which seems characteristic of most “teachable moments” in contemporary America) is not a moment of teaching; it’s a moment of deception, of misdirection, of obfuscation. Call it an obfuscatable moment.

It’s hard to remember a statement in American politics as deceitful and obfuscating as this one from Bill Kristol, pretending to condemn politically-motivated lies.

Amsterdam - A Dutch software developer must pay a fine of 250,000 euros (355,674 dollars) for sending more than 21 million unsolicited, or spam, e-mails, the Dutch telecommunications regulator OPTA said in a statement on Monday.
Reinier Schenkhuizen, owner of Serinco Benelux located in Alphen aan de Rijn near The Hague, must also pay 5,000 euros for each day he continues to send unsolicited e-mails.
