De waarheid over de oorlog in Afghanistan staat nu op WikiLeaks. Niet dat er iets staat dat niet te verwachten was. Zo is oorlog, iedere oorlog. Het gaat allemaal over de jaren Bush. Over de Nederlandse inzet in Afghanistan is er gelukkig niets schokkends boven water gekomen. Glenn Greenwald geeft zijn mening.

The WikiLeaks Afghanistan leak

The most consequential news item of the week will obviously be — or at least should be — the massive new leak by WikiLeaks of 90,000 pages of classified material chronicling the truth about the war in Afghanistan from 2004 through 2009. Those documents provide what The New York Times calls ”an unvarnished, ground-level picture of the war in Afghanistan that is in many respects more grim than the official portrayal.” The Guardian describes the documents as “a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, Taliban attacks have soared and Nato commanders fear neighbouring Pakistan and Iran are fueling the insurgency.”

Een groot deel van de media in de Verenigde Staten wordt gecontroleerd door grote bedrijven. Dat is te merken in de berichtgeving. Glenn Greenwald schrijft er veel over. Maandag schreef hij ironisch dat persbureau AP zich zou moeten verontschuldigen bij China omdat het persbureau het woord marteling had gebruikt voor de behandeling door China van de Amerikaans Chinese geoloog Xue Feng. Feng is in China veroordeeld vanwege het doorgeven van staatsgeheimen.
Volgens Greenwald is wat China heeft gedaan (sigarettepeuken uitdrukken op armen) geen martelen volgens de definitie van Bush/Cheney. Blijkbaar was AP het daar achteraf mee eens want tot Greenwalds verbazing schrapte AP daarop het woord ‘torture’ uit het artikel.

(1) On Monday, I noted that this Associated Press article twice used the word “torture” to describe what the Chinese Government did to Xue Feng, an American geologist now convicted of obtaining China’s “state secrets.” AP used the word “torture” despite the fact that (a) the treatment to which the Chinese subjected him (a few cigarette burns on his arms) clearly does not meet the Bush/Cheney/John-Yoo definition of “torture,” and (b) the Chinese Government vehemently denies that its treatment of prisoners rises to the level of “torture.” I very satirically demanded that AP apologize to China and cease using the word “torture” to describe what it did in light of the prevailing American media standard as articulated by the NYT’s Bill Keller, The Washington Post, and NPR: namely, that the word “torture” must not be used by Good Journalists (at least when it comes to the U.S. Government) if the abuse falls short of the Government’s official definition and/or if the Government denies that what it does is “torture.” That, explained our leading media mavens, would be “taking sides,” and only Bad Journalists do that.

Imagine my amazement when, several hours after I wrote that, I discovered that AP had — with no explanation or even indication — completely deleted the word “torture” from its article. [read on] (more…)

Heb je al een overwegend waardeloze pers in de Verenigde Staten en dan mogen ze ook nog hun werk niet doen. Amerikaanse media worden geweerd van met olie vervuilde stranden in de Golfkust.
Uiterst eigenaardig in alle opzichten. Denkt BP zo te voorkomen dat bekend wordt dat de kust in de Golf van Mexico door olie wordt vervuild? Is dat goed PR-beleid? Hoe kunnen openbare stranden in de VS door de lokale politie tot verboden gebied worden verklaard voor de pers?
Gelukkig is Glenn Greenwald er ook nog.

The BP/Government police state

Last week, I interviewed Mother Jones‘ Mac McClelland, who has been covering the BP oil spill in the Gulf since the first day it happened. She detailed how local police and federal officials work with BP to harass, impede, interrogate and even detain journalists who are covering the impact of the spill and the clean-up efforts. She documented one incident which was particularly chilling of an activist who — after being told by a local police officer to stop filming a BP facility because “BP didn’t want him filming” — was then pulled over after he left by that officer so he could be interrogated by a BP security official. McClelland also described how BP has virtually bought entire Police Departments which now do its bidding: ”One parish has 57 extra shifts per week that they are devoting entirely to, basically, BP security detail, and BP is paying the sheriff’s office.”

Lang geleden was JdeW voor het eerst in Vietnam om er wat stukjes over te schrijven. De persdienst in Hanoi had mij daarbij een gids toegewezen die iedere stap op de voet volgde. Uiteraard opdat ik geen, in de ogen van de Vietnamese autoriteiten, stoute dingen zou doen. Het toeval wil dat deze begeleider een heel erg mooie, jonge vrouw was. De oudere gidsen kenden eigenlijk alleen maar Russisch, vandaar. U begrijpt… het kon JdeW niet stout genoeg zijn.
Haar standaard reactie op vrijwel al mijn voorstellen was: ‘oh what a pity’.
“Oh wat a pity, daar kunt u vandaag niet heen.”
“Oh what a pity, de minister is niet beschikbaar.”
“Oh what a pity, daar mag u niet aankomen.”
Ik zie haar nog voor me, ze reikte net tot mijn schouder. Tanh was haar naam. Ze was altijd uitgedost in een spijkerbroek en een Amerikaanse baseballpet. De centrale bank: spijkerbroek; mausoleum van Ho Chi Minh: baseballpet.
Op een avond vroeg ik wat haar naam betekende.
Tanh: “Die naam heeft mijn vader mij gegeven toen ik nog in mijn moeders buik zat. Het was op het einde van de oorlog en hij was dokter aan het front. Tanh betekent ‘Overwinning’. Oh what a pity… mijn vader heeft nooit Tanh mogen zien.”

Kind of hard to argue that we aren’t a full-blown corporatocracy, when BP-that’s British Petroleum-is leading the United States Coast Guard on this-and this is okay with a branch of our armed forces. This is yet another in a long series of stunningly arrogant moves by BP:

When CBS tried to film a beach with heavy oil on the shore in South Pass, Louisiana, a boat of BP contractors, and two Coast Guard officers, told them to turn around, or be arrested.
“This is BP’s rules, it’s not ours,” someone aboard the boat said. Coast Guard officials told CBS that they’re looking into it.
As the Coast Guard is a branch of the Armed Forces, it brings into question how closely the government and BP are working together to keep details of the disaster in the dark.

De ‘Everybody Draw Muhammad Day’ is zoals de Washington Post schrijft niets anders dan ’shockeren om het shockeren’ en dus ‘fout, kinderachtig en onnodig provocerend’. Bovendien zijn er veel belangrijker zaken om je druk over te maken zoals de opwarming van de aarde.

Albuquerque Express - A Dutch boy, who survived the crash of an Afriqiyah Airways flight 771 last Wednesday, has left Libya, causing a row.
After the nine year old boy, Ruben, left Tripoli on Sunday, complaints were laid by the media company owned by Seif al-Islam, the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, complained that doctors who had been treating Ruben had attacked one of its photographers.
The photographer had wanted to photograph Ruben as he was leaving the hospital but was unable to after allegedly being jostled by his doctors. His media employer said the photographer had sustained serious injuries, including a broken wrist and a dislocated shoulder. At the same time Western photographers were permitted to take photographs of the boy.
Ruben was filmed, photographed and interviewed while a patient in the El Khadra hospital, much to the annoyance of Dutch citizens.

Zie dit verhaal dat juist op GeenStijl is verschenen. Geweldig dat de drasties redactie het vanaf nu een stuk gemakkelijker krijgt. We hoeven zelf namelijk helemaal niets meer te schrijven.

Het hele vonnis staat hierrr: Een, Twee, Drie, Vier, Vijf, Zes. Kortom: Het hele bericht overnemen MAG. Lang leve de persexceptie. Lang leve GeenStijl. Lang leve alle bloggers van Nederland. For weeks, friends and colleagues complained I had not answered their e-mail messages. I swore I had not received them. My e-mail program began crashing almost daily. But only when all my contacts disappeared for the second time did suspicion push me to act.
I dug deep inside my Yahoo settings, and I shuddered. Incoming messages had been forwarding to an unfamiliar e-mail address, one presumably typed in by intruders who had gained access to my account.
I’d been hacked.
That phrase has been popping up a lot lately on Web chats and at dinner parties in China, where scores of foreign reporters have discovered intrusions into their e-mail accounts. But unlike malware that trawls for bank account passwords or phishing gambits that peddle lonely and sexually adventurous Russian women, these cyberattacks appear inspired by good old-fashioned espionage.

Glenn Greenwald laat weer eens zien dat een aanzienlijk deel van de (vooral Republikeinse) volksvertegenwoordigers in de Verenigde Staten, twee handen op een buik met het bedrijfsleven zijn. Amerika gaat steeds meer van kapitalisme naar corporatisme. Dat is vooral bekend van Argentinië onder Peron, Portugal onder Salazar en Italië onder Mussolini. Het is een systeem waarbij de staat samenspant met het bedrijfsleven om (ten koste van de burger) een corrupte elite aan de macht te houden. Het is het schaamteloze systeem dat Rijk Amerika de laatste acht jaar in staat stelde rijker te worden, terwijl 16 procent van hun Amerikaanse mede-burgers zonder werk zit. Greenwald: “At this point, it’s more accurate to view the U.S. Government and these huge industry interests as one gigantic, amalgamated, inseparable entity — with a public division and a private one.”

De imam Sheik Fawaz Jneid heeft het Algemeen Dagblad in emails opgeroepen de tekening van de Zweedse cartoonist Lars Vilks te verwijderen van hun site. De cartoon werd gepubliceerd bij een artikel over radicale moslims die er van worden verdacht Vilks te willen vermoorden. Ondanks de relevantie is de cartoon gisteren door het AD verwijderd.
De imam vindt de tekening beledigend en het optreden van het AD schandelijk. Met name omdat als men zich wat beter had ‘ingelezen in het leven van de profeet’ Mohammed, ‘men niets anders had aangetroffen dan goed gedrag, vredelievendheid en geduld’. Wat JdeW wel mist is een mening van de imam (’draag een hoofddoek anders wordt je verkracht’) over de aanleiding van de publicatie - radicale moslims die een tekenaar willen vermoorden om een tekening. Ik kan er geen woord over vinden op zijn site, alyaqeem.com. Wel kan ik me dit nog herinneren uit een preek van imam Fawaz:
“O God, bezorg Van Gogh een ziekte die door alle bewoners van de aarde niet kan worden genezen. O God, verblind het zicht van Ayaan Hirsi Ali zoals u haar hart hebt verblind, O God verblind haar zicht, O God, bezorg haar hersenen een kanker. O God, bezorg haar een tongkanker.”
Imam Fawaz, u mag dat vinden en u mag dat zeggen in Nederland en JdeW mag deze cartoon publiceren.
En nu ik u toch heb, ben ik echt te laat voor de Nationale Koran Competitie?

Schandelijk optreden van AD

Het is weer zover. Uit naam van de journalistiek wordt er weer de spot gedreven met de Profeet Mohammed (vrede zij met hem).
In de digitale versie van het Algemeen Dagblad van 16 maart 2010 wordt er bericht dat twee personen in staat van beschuldiging worden gesteld in verband met een vermeende samenzwering een moord te plegen op een Zweedse cartoonist. Hierbij vond men het nodig de gewraakte cartoon af te beelden. Waarom?

Wat er gebeurd is met de site PleaseRobMe is niet helemaal duidelijk. Gestolen, gehacked, schroefje los, zeker is dat de site sinds gisteren uit de lucht is. Is dat een record, qua sluitingstijd dan?
Daarmee lijkt een snel einde gekomen aan weer zo’n technisch hoogstandje om het leven gemakkelijker te maken. Van inbrekers dan. Die hoefden dankzij de site PleaseRobMe niet meer te speuren naar huizen waarvan de bewoners niet thuis zijn. PleaseRobMe verzamelde informatie van de moderne mens die meent het middelpunt van de wereld te zijn. En dus mededelingen doet als ‘ik zit nu een broodje kaas te eten in Scheltema’. FourSquare en Twitter zijn evenwel niet alleen interessant voor de incrowd. Dieven liggen voortdurend op de loer, aldus de drie Nederlandse makers van de site, die zelf overigens ook op Twitter zitten. Ach, het was even leuk.

Social network for robbers shut down.
The Dutch website PleaseRobMe, seeking to inform people of the dangers of sharing information in forums such as Twitter and Foursquare, was shut down on Thursday. On Friday is was still down. When visiting the site the ony thing you find is an Internal Server Error message.
The apparent shutdown followed PleaseRobMe’s Twitter account being suspended earlier in the day for “suspicious activity.” PleaseRobMe apparently used tools to send automated tweets advising other Twitter users of how their information could be exploited, PC Magazine reported. read on>> (more…)

An international press freedom watchdog said that 2009 saw a record number of journalists killed, including the single worst massacre in the Philippines, as well as an increase in journalists jailed, fueled by the crackdown in Iran.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said the massacre of 29 journalists and two media support workers in a politically motivated ambush in the southern Philippines on Nov. 23 claimed more lives than any single event since it started documenting attacks on the press 18 years ago.
In its annual report on freedom of the press released Tuesday, the committee also accused Iran of being one of the leading jailers of journalists last year, with more than 90 reporters arrested and at least 23 writers and editors still being held.
That’s second only to China, where 24 journalists are in jail today, it said, though that’s a decline from a high of 42 in 2004. whole story>>

Washington, 1 February, WashingtonTV - The website of the Dutch-based Persian language radio station, Radio Zamaneh, was hacked over the weekend by a group calling themselves the ‘Iranian Cyber Army’.
The website of the Dutch government-funded station, which reports on human rights in Iran, had this message during the weekend: “Iranian Cyber Army warns all treasonous mercenaries that it will not leave them at peace even in the bosom of their masters.” The incident comes weeks after the same group hacked the Chinese search engine, Baidu, and the popular blogging site, Twitter.
