Meer dan achthonderd Chinese kippen zijn gestorven door een luidruchtig feest nabij. De kippen bleken niet bestand tegen de decibels afkomstig van een drietal lokale Chinese zangers. De zanggroep zou slechts een nummer hebben gezongen maar dat bleek al voldoende om achthonderd onschuldige kippen de dood in te jagen.
De eigenaar van een motorwinkel vierde de goede resultaten van de winkel, aldus de website dahe.com. “Hij had nooit gedacht dat de muziek zo luid stond dat de kippen eraan zouden bezwijken,” zo staat te lezen op de site. Het geschil moest worden beslecht door de rechtbank die de motorwinkel veroordeelde tot een schadevergoeding van 1.800 euro. De zanggroep bleek onvindbaar.
Op zoek naar een gepaste aanpak van Noord-Korea wordt getracht de bedoelingen van dit land te begrijpen. Zo wordt gesuggereerd dat het meest recente nucleaire wapengekletter vooral voor binnenlandse consumptie zou zijn; om de opvolging van Kim Jong il veilig te stellen. Dan moet je namelijk - volgens deze redenatie - de militairen te vriend houden. Daadwerkelijk een conflict starten, waar Noord-Korea nu mee dreigt, zou volgens analisten onwaarschijnlijk zijn, omdat dan, na heel veel (nucleair) wapengekletter, Noord-Korea zeker het onderspit zal delven.
Zelfmoord dus. Wie doet dat nu?

Höhere Deiche sollen die Niederlande gegen einen steigenden Meeresspiegel wappnen. Doch dem Küstenschutz wird regelrecht der Boden entzogen. Der Nordosten der Niederlande an der Grenze zu Niedersachsen sinkt dramatisch ab und damit sinken auch die Deiche. Schuld ist die Gasförderung, sie höhlt den Boden förmlich aus.
Eine neue Studie sagt nun voraus, dass die Region um Groningen bis Mitte des Jahrhunderts um einen Meter tiefer liegen wird als 1970, berichten Geoforscher um Karin Thienen-Visser vom Geologischen Dienst TNO in einem Gutachten für die niederländische Regierung. Die Folgen für Küstenorte und Wattenmeer seien “besorgniserregend”, warnen die TNO-Forscher. Auch anderswo kämpfen Großstädte gegen die teils dramatische Absenkung des Bodens. Americans’ first reactions Obama’s nomination of judge Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court are decidedly more positive than negative. Gallup also conducted polls after George W. Bush’s nominations of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court in 2005.
Beck: So let me start with that question: Are we still a capitalist country.
Sowell: Oh, heavens, partially. We’re not a socialist country, because the socialists believe in government ownership of the means of production. But the fascists believe that the government should have private ownership, and the politicians should tell the people how to run their businesses. So that’s the route we seem to be going.

De Republikeinen lijken een grof schandaal boven water te halen. President Obama zou systematisch bezig zijn Chrysler-dealers de nek om te draaien die Republikeinen hebben gesteund in de verkiezingscampagne. Feit is dat veel meer Republikeinse dealers het loodje leggen dan Democratische. Het altijd op corruptie alerte Fox News stelde daarover zelfs al vragen in het Witte Huis.
En oh ja, nog een feitje. Van de bijdragen van autodealers aan verkiezingscampagnes ging 88 procent naar Republikeinen en 12 procent naar Democraten.

Citing a handful of right-wing bloggers yesterday afternoon, the Washington Examiner reported ominously, “Evidence appears to be mounting that the Obama administration has systematically targeted Chrysler dealers who contributed to Republicans” for closure. Not to be outdone, Fox and Friends hosted conservative blogger Michelle Malkin this morning to play up the conspiracy theory. “Believe me Steve, over the last several years, we’ve all documented the Obama-Chicago-gangland tactics that certainly make this a possibility,” Malkin said.

Pianospelen is mijn passie. Alleen jammer dat ik niet over echt talent beschik. Met veel pijn en inspanning heb ik me de Mondschein sonate van Beethoven eigengemaakt. Zeg maar veroverd, maar wel in de eenvoudige zetting. Voor het slapen gaan speel ik ‘m dan, voor mezelf.
Zo gisteravond weer.
Mijn vrouw komt vandaag pas laat thuis. Er staat een man voor ons vensterraam aan de straatkant, met z’n oor tegen het raam gedrukt. Een wolk van alcohol omgeeft z’n gebogen gestalte.

Een echtpaar in Saoedi-Arabië kon het maar niet eens worden over de naam voor hun eerste zoon. Na twee dagen ruziën had de moeder er genoeg van en vertrok met de baby naar haar ouders. The dispute got so bad the mother went back to her family with the child while the father sent a divorce letter to the father-in-law.

Two more New Yorkers have died with confirmed cases of swine flu. The city’s health commissioner said on Tuesday, bringing the city’s total number of deaths related to the virus to four. Emergency room visits and hospitalizations also continued to rise.
The commissioner, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, said the two latest casualties, a 41-year-old woman in Queens and a 34-year-old man in Brooklyn, were linked to the H1N1 virus by lab tests completed on Monday and Tuesday. Both patients had underlying health conditions that put them more at risk, he said. He added that he could not say officially whether the flu had caused their deaths until autopsies were finished. Both died on Friday.
Officials have cited underlying conditions as a factor in all four deaths in the city, but they have not revealed those conditions, citing medical confidentiality.

Health officials have said that there is some evidence that people born before 1957 may have been exposed to a similar virus and may have some immunity to the novel strain of flu that is circulating.

Er werd op de deur geklopt. Apie hees zich overeind. Daar kwamen de sigaretten. Met een chagrijnige grom deed hij zijn kamerjas aan. Hij keek door het kijkgaatje en deed de deur open.
Daar stond Bolly! Teder kuste ze Apie op de lippen en duwde hem op het bed. Liefde, lieve mensen, overwint alles. Zolang mensen elkaar nog kunnen beminnen zoals Bolly en Apie die nacht, zolang is er nog hoop. En leven.

There stood Bolly! Tenderly she kissed Apie’s lips and she pushed him backwards on the bed. It is love, my dear readers, which conquers all. As long as a man and a woman can love each other like Bolly and Apie did that night, so long there is hope. And life.
