Bij onze plaatselijke slagerij is het nog steeds gebruikelijk dat kinderen een worstje krijgen na het afrekenen. Zo ook onze 4-jarige Bas.
Omdat manieren bij ons hoog aangeschreven staan, stel ik hem, na ontvangst van het worstje, de vraag: “wat zeg je dan tegen die mevrouw?” Een antwoord blijft uit en ik herhaal mijn vraag.
Als dan nog steeds een “dank u wel” uitblijft, kijk ik Bas aan en zeg; “Bas, ik hoor niks…”
Waarop Bas mij volledig de mond snoert door te antwoorden: “Nee mama, maar ik zei ook niks!”

Hebt u ook een betekenisloze naam? U dacht van niet zeker. Nou sukkel, u hebt het mis. Alle namen van Christelijke, Joodse, Boedhistische, Taoistische enz. oorsprong alsmede alle niet religieuze westerse namen zijn volgens Marokko betekenisloos. Vandaar dat Marokko het geven van christelijke namen als Johan, Maria en Jozef al lang geleden verboden heeft voor haar Marokkaanse onderdanen die toevallig in Nederland zijn geboren. Uiteraard zijn joodse namen als David, Levi, Jozef helemaal taboe. Maar nu mogen Marokkanen in Nederland hun kinderen ook geen Berberse namen meer geven. Daartoe stuurt Marokko deze week een nieuwe lijst met verboden namen naar alle ambassades en consulaten.
Fijn toch, dat Rabat zo duidelijk het beste voor heeft met haar onderdanen. ”Wij verbieden Berbernamen omdat zij in tegenspraak zijn met de identiteit en omdat ze de deur openen voor verspreiding van betekenisloze namen,’ zegt Idris Bajdi van het Marokkaanse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken tegen dagblad Trouw. Het overgrote deel van de Marokkaanse Nederlanders is van oorsprong Berber. Het besluit van Rabat is voor de Berbers een nieuwe klap in het gezicht. Het land wil volgens critici al langer af van de Berbertaal en de cultuur die daar bij hoort, aldus Trouw.
Wist u overigens dat op Nederlandse gemeentehuizen lijsten liggen met door Marokko lijst van verplichtte voornamen.

De Indiase straatkinderen die spelen in de film Slumdog Millionaires, favoriet voor diverse Oscars, zijn nog steeds slumdogs. Ze leven nog altijd in een krottenwijk in Mumbai en één van de topacteurs slaapt tegenwoordig onder niet meer dan een plastic zeil omdat zijn ouderlijk krot is verwoest. Dat blijkt uit een artikel in de Hindustan Times. De film, ook wel poverty porn genoemt, maakt kans op vele Oscars.

Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, two of the child actors in “Slumdog Millionaire,” are still living in the slums of Mumbai, despite the film’s $14 million budget and worldwide success. Ali earned 500 British pounds ($710) for one year’s work and Ismail earned 1700 pounds ($2414), “less than many Indian domestic servants“:

Both children were found places in a local school and receive £20 a month for books and food. However, they continue to live in grinding poverty and their families say they have received no details of the trust funds set up in their names. Their parents said that they had hoped the film would be their ticket out of the slums, and that its success had made them realise how little their children had been paid.

Ismail is in fact “worse off” now, as his “family’s illegal hut was demolished by the local authorities and he now sleeps under a sheet of plastic tarpaulin.” Ali lives nearby — in a “hut.” A Fox Searchlight spokesperson said he is “proud” of their treatment and boasted, “For 30 days work, the children were paid three times the average local annual adult salary.”

Aside from the intrinsic dangers and injustices of arguing for immunity for high-level government officials who commit felonies, it’s the total selectivity of the rationale underlying that case which makes it so corrupt. Defenders of Bush officials sing in unison: We shouldn’t get caught up in the past. We shouldn’t be driven by vengeance and retribution. We shouldn’t punish people whose motives in committing crimes weren’t really that bad.
There are countries in the world which actually embrace those premises for all of their citizens, and whose justice system consequently reflects a lenient approach to crime and punishment. The United States is not one of those countries. In fact, for ordinary citizens the exact opposite is true:

Fascinating book, really thorough. (There are things in here I didn’t even know, and I’m more informed about Reagan than the average bear.) The Reagan myth is so large, so unquestioned that he even gets credit for the things he didn’t do: Star Wars! Stopped the Cold War! Made the economy hum like a top! (If you have a Reagan-loving in-law, this is the book you want to read before your next family get-together.)

Hoewel we op zondag al telefonisch op de hoogte waren gebracht dat er in ons kantoor was ingebroken, waren we toch niet voorbereid op de puinhoop die we op maandagmorgen aantroffen.
De ‘veiligheidsdeuren’ die na de vorige inbraak waren geinstalleerd, waren bijna uit hun voegen geramd, stukken muur weggebikt, papieren lagen overal verspreid, het kleingeld uit de kas was door ’t hele kantoor geflikkerd en alle laden lagen omgekeerd op de vloer. Ook de politie had haar sporen achtergelaten; alles zat vol met zwart poeder en de vloer stond vol met smerige voetstappen. Gelukkig waren alle telefoonlijnen uit de muur gerukt, dus terwijl die gerepareerd werden, konden we in alle rust opruimen en schoonmaken. Bij ons valt weinig te halen; de antieke computers worden tot in den treure ge-upgrade, ons kasje bevat slechts kleingeld en de chequebooks waren niet interessant genoeg voor onze dieven. Op andere verdiepingen waren laptops gejat en kopieer- en faxmachines kapot geslagen. Wij mochten ons dus gelukkig prijzen dat onze lieve machientjes het geweld hadden overleefd.
De inbrekers hadden een druk weekend gehad; wij hoorden later dat zij via ons dak ook in het gebouw naast ons een bezoekje hadden afgelegd en na gedane arbeid dure frisdrankjes bij de 2 kiosken in onze buurt hadden ‘gehaald’.
Terwijl wij druk in de weer waren met onze puinruimactiviteiten, kwam onze concierge zeer ontzet aanlopen. Op zijn dringend verzoek liepen we met hem mee naar beneden en ook wij konden onze ogen niet geloven; in zijn hokje, als toppunt van brutaliteit, symbolisch schijt aan ons allen hebbend, ondanks keurige toiletten op vier verdiepingen, hadden de inbrekers hun visitekaartje gedeponeerd: een grote, gore, kunstig gewrochte DROL!

Het leek een droom. Daar zat ik dan, in het voetbalstadion. Het verbaasde me wel dat de plaats naast mij vrij was. Ik keek mijn buurman aan. ”Snapt u dat iemand een kaartje heeft voor de wk-finale en niet komt opdagen?”, vroeg ik hem.
“Nou”, antwoordde hij, “eigenlijk is die plaats ook voor mij. Mijn vrouw zou meekomen, maar ze is helaas overleden. Dit is de eerste finale die we niet samen zien in 20 jaar.”
Met een rood hoofd zei ik: “Sorry, dat wist ik niet. Maar kon u dan niemand anders vinden om mee te nemen, een vriend of een kennis ofzo?”
De man schudde het hoofd. “Nee, iedereen is naar de begrafenis.”

Tijdens zijn laatste bezoek aan Nederland kocht hij er één en niet zo maar een paard. Een Fries paard, groot en zwart, en kampioen in zijn klasse. But when Keith Johnson went earlier this month, he bought something besides flower bulbs, silver skates, tiny windmills or wooden shoes.
Keith bought a horse.
Not just any horse, mind you. Only a few days after the deal was done, his new Friesian stallion, Rinsefarmaren-state, was named the World Grand Champion in his class, the 3-year-old driving stallions. After the sale, but before the show, Keith called his wife, Suzi, back in Shelbyville.

Sarah Palin (R) has created her own political action committee, SarahPAC, to help raise funds for other Republicans. “She has gotten so many requests,” an official with SarahPAC said. “She looks forward to helping other candidates.” Though Palin may be looking to solidify her status with the GOP, some Republicans, such as former McCain adviser John Weaver, might not be excited about SarahPac. Weaver told the Washington Post that Palin is one of “the most controversial voices on the extreme right.”

The bank used TARP funds to purchase a new corporate jet for executives.
The decision came 24 hours after the banking giant, which was rescued by a $45 billion taxpayer lifeline, defended buying the state-of-the-art Dassault Falcon 7X — one of nine to be flying in U.S. skies — as a smart business deal.
The jet, the epitome of corporate prestige and privilege, can carry 12 passengers in elegant comfort.
ABC News has learned that on Monday officials of the Obama administration called Citigroup about the company’s new $50 million corporate jet and told execs to “fix it.”

O’Reilly: Karzai’s Concern For Civilian Causalities Is ‘Insulting’

Last night on the O’Reilly Factor, host Bill O’Reilly blasted Afghan President Hamid Karzai for appealing to U.S. forces to do more to limit civilian casualties in Afghanistan. O’Reilly chastised Karzai, calling his appeal “insulting” and suggesting that Afghans are ungrateful for the support they receive from U.S. and NATO forces:

OREILLY: U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan are risking their lives to protect the Afghan people from the Taliban and al Qaeda. But President Karzai does not seem to get that. Once again, he has condemned American forces after a raid killed some civilians.

In that raid, a top Taliban commander and some of his cronies were also killed, but apparently, Karzai doesn’t understand that in war, collateral damage is constantly present. U.S. military is investigating the situation, but Check believes Karzai is making a political grandstand play, and it is insulting. Without us, his head is on a stick.

Veel Turkse en Marokkaanse Nederlanders zijn bang om naar een ’witte’ wijk, een buurt met vooral autochtone Nederlanders, te verhuizen, schrijft het AD. Ze vrezen daar eenzaam te zijn en door de buurtbewoners te worden weggekeken. Het verharde maatschappelijke klimaat voedt die angst. Dat blijkt uit het rapport ’Goede buren kun je niet kopen’, dat het Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau dinsdag publiceerde.

But when complaints in the heart of Enlightenment Europe lead prosecutors to put Wilders on trial, facing a jail term of two years for expressing his opinions, then the tyranny of thought police has truly taken hold in the West.
The Dutch MP with the flamboyant hair style has opinions that are surely offensive, perhaps hurtful and even hateful. You may say Wilders is wrong. Indeed, feel free to do so. But to prosecute a man for his offensive views is, on so many levels, even more wrong. Let me count the ways.

En volgende week kunnen de temperaturen nog verder omlaag gaan, aldus weerexperts.

Mijn moeder moest op haar oude dag nog aan het internet geloven. Voor haar vijfenzestigste verjaardag werd een computer in huis geïnstalleerd. Met zachte dwang dreven de kleinkinderen haar naar het beeldscherm.
“Oma als je iets wilt weten, kun je het googlelen”, liet Elly zien. “Zo kun je alles te weten komen, kijk.” Oma keek, maar met grote scepsis.
“Jan”, zei ze, “is dat zo?”
“Ja mam, dat is zo.”
“Nou”, zei ze na enig nadenken, “dan zou ik graag willen googlullen of tante Nel d’r man nog steeds bij die meid in huis zit.”
