Johan Ferrier, first president of independent Suriname, dies at age 99.
World Breaking News. The Associated Press - Johan Ferrier, the first president of post-independence Suriname, has died at his home in the Netherlands. He was 99.
Ferrier’s daughter, Joan Ferrier, told the Wereldomroep that her father died in his sleep and was found dead monday. Ferrier was a teacher who in 1946 helped set up the National Party of Suriname, while the sparsely populated country on South America’s northeastern shoulder was still a Dutch colony. He was governor from 1968 until Suriname gained independence in 1975, when he became the country’s first president.
