In het Fortress hotel in Sri Lanka moet ruim 10.000 euro voor dit dessert betaald worden. Het cassata-ijsje ‘Fort Paal Vissersgenoegen’ is ontworpen om gasten in de kustplaats Galle een unieke ervaring te geven. Het is omwikkeld met bladgoud. Het wordt geserveerd met Ierse room, mango, granaatappelmoes en champagnesabayon. Het is versierd met een aquamarijnsteen van 80 karaat en een chocolade-visser die aan een paal hangt.
Galle is verder bekend om zijn Nederlandse fort, vuurtoren en Nederlands Hervormde kerk (1642). In 1602 ankerden de eerste Nederlandse schepen voor de kust van Ceylon.

De eeuwenoude ‘Hollandsche Vereeniging’ werd in 1907 opgevolgd door ‘The Dutch Burgher Union of Ceylon’. Het aantal burghers in Sri Lanka bedraagt nu rond de 40.000 met namen als Andriesz, Anthonisz, Bartholomeusz, Beekmun, Beven, Claasz, de Hoedt, de Kretser, Engelbrecht, Foenander, Frugtniet, Loos, Lourensz, Martinus, Neydorff, Scharenguivel, Van Arkadie, Van Cuylenburg, Van Dersil, Van Hoff, Van Rooyen, Van der Gucht, Willenberg.

Under the command of Admiral Joris Van Spilbergen, on the 31 May 1602, the first Dutch ships that visited Ceylon anchored off the port of Batticaloa.

After their conquest, the Dutch also attempted to found some colonies of Dutch citizens dubbed “Burgher”. This was attempted particularly first under Maetsuyker (governor from 1646 to 1650), but at the end of his government and later under Van Goens (governor from 1662-1663 and 1665-1675), there were only 68 married free-Burghers on the island. Such policy was clearly a failure as only a few Dutch families settled on the island. In the first 30 years of Dutch rule in Ceylon, the Burgher community never exceeded 500 in number and it was mainly composed by sailors, clerks, tavern-keepers and discharged soldiers.

Colombo has neighbourhoods as Wolvendaal, there is a Dutch canal between Colombo and Negombo, and an island near Jaffna is called Delft. Patatoe is aartappel (aardappel), stoepie is a garden near the streat (see stoep), zolderuwe is attic (zolder), boontjie are beans ((princesse) boon). The other way around is also true: the Dutch slang for to eat: kanen could come from the Sinhalese khanneva (to eat) and Salie from “Jan Salie” could be a reference to the Sinhalese word for money sali.
