Na een week op het eiland Penang te hebben doorgebracht ben ik in een dag van Penang naar Taiping gefietst, gedeeltelijk door mooie vegetatie en gedeeltelijk door eentonige palmolieplantages. Na de hitte van de dag en de saaie rechte wegen in de vlakte is binnenkomen in Taiping een complete verrassing. Groene heuvels en de koelte van een voorbije regenbui. Ik fietste langs een groot terras vol met drinkende mannen van Indiase afkomst en herkende ook de rugzaktoeristen, waarvan ik ’s-ochtend in het guesthouse afscheid had genomen.
Ik was natuurlijk met een natte vinger te lijmen.
Taiping is groot geworden door de aanwezigheid van tinmijnen en daaraan dankt de stad ook een prachtig stadspark met grote waterpartijen en een enorme zoo. Dat park is aangelegd op de plaats van de voormalige tinertsgroeve en het is ongelooflijk groen. Dat heeft weer te maken met het feit dat in Maleisie nergens meer regen valt dan in Taiping. Niet dat het hier de hele dag regent, de regen valt meestal in de namiddag en in de nacht en die extreme regenval is vermoedelijk te danken aan het feit, dat de stad aan de voet van een 1500 meter hoge berg ligt.

Wat een geestig stukje van deze Amerikaan Jeff Maurer over Nederlanders. De aanleiding is Amerikaans voetbal maar zoals zo vaak is sport slechts een metafoor voor het echte leven. Hij vertrouwt die Nederlanders, die alles weten van Amerika en de rest van de wereld, trouwens voor geen cent.

Me: Virginia. It’s on the East coast, kind of in the middle.
Stanley: Yes, I know, next to Maryland and West Virginia. I always thought it was funny that there was one state called Virginia and another called West Virginia.
Me: Yeah, well, the reason for that is…
Stanley: I know: West Virginia seceded from Virginia during the Civil War, back in the 19th century.

Holy hash pipes, Stanley! What percentage of Virginians do you think know that? Maybe half? I was about to roll out that story out as if it was some little-known historical fact, like that Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln and Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy. Gisteren hield het spamfilter van drasties de 99.999-ste spam tegen. Dus u zult begrijpen dat de drasties-redactie blij is met de actie van het Team High Tech Crime (THTC) van de Nationale Recherche. Zij legden de servers van het Bredolab-netwerk plat.
Bredolab is een berucht botnet dat sinds juli 2009 meer dan 143 servers gebruikte om wereldwijd minstens dertig miljoen pc’s te infecteren met 3,6 miljard besmette emails. Een Trojan Horse-virus werd geinstalleerd op computers waarna de criminelen persoonlijke gegevens zoals wachtwoorden konden stelen.
Het brein achter het Bredolab virus, een 27-jarige Armeniër, is gisteren gearresteerd op het vliegveld van de Armeense hoofdstad Jerevan. Toen het netwerk werd uitgeschakeld deed hij nog diverse pogingen om de controle over zijn botnet terug te krijgen. Dat mislukte en vervolgens deed hij een massale tegenaanval met 220 duizend besmette computers. Deze aanval werd beëindigd toen in Parijs drie servers, die de verdachte in de cyberwar had ingezet, werden afgesloten.
Geweldig dus. Echter, er is een klein probleempje. Feitelijk heeft de Nederlandse politie de computers van de criminelen teruggehackt. En hacken mag niet van de wet. Of wel?

PCWorld - Dutch police took unprecedented action in taking down a botnet on Monday: They uploaded their own program to infected computers around the world, a move that likely violated computer crime laws.
The program causes a computer’s Web browser to redirect to a special site set up by the Netherlands Police Agency, where users are informed their computer is infected with Bredolab, a password-stealing malicious software program.

Republican Senate candidate in Colorado Ken Buck said that he “disagree[d] strongly with the concept of separation of church and state,” and that “it was not written into the Constitution,” and then went on to rip President Obama for supposedly getting rid of the White House Christmas tree:

And, and I am worried about the fact that we seem to be walking away from culture. Independent groups have so far spent $257.7 million to influence political campaigns this year, “nearly quadrupling such interest groups’ total spending in the last midterm election.” Conservative groups are outspending progressive ones by 2 to 1. The “2010 spending spree is shattering records” largely because of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision last January.

Last night before a debate, supporters of Kentucky Republican Senate nominee Rand Paul tackled a MoveOn.Org member to the ground and “stomped on her head” within feet of the candidate. Democratic activist Lauren Valle suffered a concussion and spent the night in the hospital.

Niet alleen de Verenigde Staten van Amerika - met militairen bases in 129 landen - hebben grote financiële problemen. Ook de staten zelfs hebben toenemende schulden. Californië is vrijwel bankroet en Texas stevent af op een begrotingstekort van 25 miljard dollar, een kwart van de uitgaven. Desondanks blijft het devies voor de Republikeinen lagere belastingen voor rijken en bedrijven.
Maar er kan bezuinigd worden, bijvoorbeeld op (openbaar) onderwijs.

Uiteraard zijn er heel wat Amerikanen die beseffen in wat voor land ze leven: een land dat geen tunnel meer kan aanleggen. Zie het boek van Ariana Huffington: ‘Third World America’. Ze beschrijft wat het gevolg is van ‘kapitalisme zonder geweten’ van een generatie conservatieve politici. Ze hebben er een land van gemaakt met een verarmde, gedemoraliseerde middenklasse, een vervallen infrastructuur en een politiek systeem dat er schaamteloos op uit is rijken rijker te maken. Een land waar mensen sterven door het afschaffen van regels (mijnen, olie). Waar mensen sterven omdat ze de dokter niet kunnen betalen.
Kortom, aldus Bill O’Reilly, een veel beter land dan Nederland.
De Fox News presentator beschreef Holland als een land van ‘wonderfully naive ideas, full of undesirables, a cesspool, a disaster, completely run amuck’. En ook: “Amsterdam is a cesspool of corruption, crime. Everything is out of control. It’s anarchy.”
En valt het u ook op dat zelfs in onderstaand artikel over lengte en gezondheid, een Amerikaan er nog een oorlog bij weet te halen?

Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg yesterday called for an inquiry into the trove of leaked U.S. military files from the Iraq war that document prisoner abuses by Iraqi forces, insurgent and sectarian violence and civilians shot at checkpoints by U.S. troops. Clegg said that allegations of British misconduct “are extremely serious and need to be looked at.”

The US deficit shrank nine percent last fiscal year but still topped one trillion dollars, the government said Friday in a report seized on by Democrats’ rivals weeks ahead of mid-term elections. Revenue rose and spending fell.
For the 2010 fiscal year that ended on September 30, the government had a budget shortfall of 1.294 trillion dollars, down 122 billion dollars from the previous year’s record-setting high.

What is the most important thing the leader of the Republicans in the U.S. Senate wants to achieve in the coming years. Remember the U.S. is involved in two wars and the Great Recession is still going strong.
Fax this over to the White House just in case they are gearing up for some more of them ‘good faith bipartisan negotiations’ and ‘mutually beneficial compromise’.
