The real problem with extremism as an attention-grabber isn’t that we don’t know what to do about it. The real problem is that it works. By knocking down the Twin Towers and announcing a constant stream of threats, the Islamic radicals got and continue to get publicity out of proportion to their numbers — just as the Tea Partiers have been dominating the national airwaves even though their ranks, according to survey data, constitute no more than 13 percent of the American public. Similarly, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are very well remunerated for their high-decibel hate. In other words, we may say we hate fanaticism, but we pay attention to it and may even reward it.

Waarom heb je het in bad koud als je schouders boven het water uitsteken, terwijl het okee is als je knieen er boven uit steken?

b. Je schouders hebben meer vet dan je knieen.
c. Je schouders zitten dichter bij je hoofd, dus je denkt eerder dat je het koud hebt.

Een geweldig stuk van Adam Karlin over vrijheid in Nederland en de Verenigde Staten.
Is vrijheid het bezitten van een pistool om iemand mee dood te schieten? Of is vrijheid een wereld waarin een poging wordt gedaan iedereen de kans te geven zijn potentieel te benutten. Famke legt het allemaal uit aan Adam.
Karlin zegt in dit artikel dat de ‘frontier sense of individuality that is at the core of the American identity was never really the Dutch thing’. Dat is natuurlijk niet juist. Ten eerste is er geen grens die niet door Nederlanders is (en nog wordt) overschreden. En niet alleen in geografische zin. Verder zijn Nederlanders zeer individueel. Individualiteit, onafhankelijk van groepsdenken je eigen mening vormen, is de basis van de Nederlandse democratie en eigenlijk iedere echte democratie. Zonder dat kan democratie niet bestaan. Vandaar dat in, noem maar wat, Afrika democratie zo slecht werkt. Daar stemt men niet voor van eigen zelfontwikkelde ideeën‎ maar voor zijn eigen stam.

It is tempting, as a Coastie Liberal, to point at the European system and say “See? Life is better there. They’ve got legal pot, prostitutes, gays can marry, no one pops off all crazy with guns, free school, free healthcare, etc, etc.” It’s the sort of argument that enrages my Libertarian friends, who are just about ready to cave in my skull with copies of ‘Atlas Shrugged’ whenever I allude to the above.
And rightfully so. The Euro vs America debate is often ridiculously over-simplified, although this excellent NY Times article is anecdotal and informative, a rare combination. I will simply say this: during my time in the Netherlands, I was struck, repeatedly, by how two societies that claim to love freedom and liberty can have such different ways of ordering the world.
