De speciale verkiezingsstrategie van de Zanu-PF-partij van president Robert Mugabe is handen gevallen van de onafhankelijke website www.sokwanele.com. De verkiezingscampagne, die in april van dit jaar werd opgesteld, bestaat er uit supporters van Mugabe wapens te geven en die te gebruiken tegen leden van de oppositie. Dat schrijft de Zuidafrikaanse krant Beeld, ‘Jou wereld, Jou koerant’. Ook zouden parlementsleden van de oppositie moeten worden vermoord en alle bijeenkomsten van Tsvangirai partij moeten worden verstoord. Dat is gelukt.

Gaat dat tegenwoordig zo in Thailand?
Om een rechter om te kopen, laat je gewoon op goed geluk een zak met geld (40.000 euro) achter in de buurt van de rechtszaal. Advocaten van de afgezette premier Thaksin deden dat eerder deze maand in een poging de rechters gunstig te stemmen die het vonnis moesten vellen in de zaak over een (corrupte) landaankoop van Thaksin’s vrouw. Gezien de actie kunnen de haakjes om het woord corrupte dus wel weg.
Opmerkelijk was de directe reactie van mijn Thaise schoonmaakster: “Why didn’t they just take it?”
Daar is over nagedacht en de reden moet zijn dat het te riskant was. Geld in een papieren zak achtergelaten in de ‘compound’ van het Hooggerechtshof? Koortsachtig moet er zijn nagedacht. Van wie is het afkomstig en voor wie is het bestemd? Is het voor de Thaksin zaak of is het voor de zaak daarvoor dan wel die daarna? Kortom, er waren te veel vragen en daarom werd de vondst van het geld gemeld.
Het verweer van de drie advocaten bestond er overigens uit dat een broodzak vol brood per ongeluk was verwisseld met een broodzak vol geld. Ze zijn opgesloten.

THAILAND JAILES LAWYERS OF THAKSIN IN ‘MISTAKEN SNACKBOX CASE’.

Thailand’s Supreme Court jailed three lawyers of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Wednesday after an apparent attempt to bribe court officials with $60,000 (30,400 pounds) hidden in a paper grocery bag.
Pichit Chuenban and two associates representing Thaksin and his wife in a pending land-deal case were responsible for the 2 million baht left in the bag at the Supreme Court compound earlier this month, the court ruled.
The bag was found on the day that Thaksin, ousted in a coup in 2006, and his wife were due to appear on charges of violating graft laws that prevent serving politicians and their spouses from striking deals with state agencies.

Bush’s approval hits new low: 23 percent.

Only 23 percent of Americans said they approve of President Bush’s job performance in a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg survey, which is a new low for him in that poll. Seventy-three percent of respondents said they disapproved of the job Bush is doing.

McClellan: Cheney’s memoir could be called, ‘I Upped Halliburton’s Income - So Up Yours’.

In a speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco last night, former White House press secretary Scott McClellan offered cutting criticism of Vice President Dick Cheney, saying he “had a terribly negative influence over this president.” At one point, McClellan suggested “some ideas for book titles Cheney might consider“:

McClellan who is clear that he has no great admiration for Cheney, joked to the audience that his national book tour has given him some ideas for book titles Cheney might consider: “The Lies I Told,” or “I Upped Halliburton’s Income - So Up Yours.”

McClellan also offered potential book title ideas for Karl Rove and Scooter Libby: “The Lies I Told to Whom and Why” and “Well, Pardon Me,” respectively.

Het gaat de goede kant op in Belgie. Nu mogen alleen nog mensen die echt Nederlands spreken in Vilvoorde een huis kopen. En nog strengere maatregelen zijn in voorbereiding. Straks zullen Vilvoorders die het Nederlands niet machtig zijn, worden geweigerd in bus of trein. En ook aparte toiletten, vergeef me, aparte wc’s - komt uit het Engels maar dat mag dan weer wel he - voor Frans en Nederlands sprekenden zijn in aankomst. Verder zijn echte Vilvoorders hard aan het oefenen op de uitspraak van het woord ‘Scheveningen’. Een in Nederland in WW II beproefd middel om buitenlandse infiltranten op te sporen.
Het voorbeeld van Vilvoorde verspreid zich overigens als een olievlek. Het geldt nu ook in Zaventem en Londerzeel, allemaal gemeenten rond Westerbork Brussel. En in Geraardsbergen worden taalvoorwaarden gekoppeld aan het verkrijgen van een leefloon (nl: bijstand).
In Nederland wordt de ontwikkeling in Belgie op de voet gevolgd.
Zo is er een voorstel in voorbereiding om alleen nog mensen toestemming te geven een huis te kopen in de Amsterdamse Slotervaart die het Marokkaans machtig zijn. Een verdere voorwaarde is, zo stelt de plaatselijke imam voor, dat de toekomstige huiseigenaar gedurende tenminste twintig seconden het woord ‘hoer’ op een geluidsniveau van tenminste 20 decibel ten gehore kan brengen.

‘APARTHEID’ ENTERS BELGIAN POLITICS: ONLY DUTCH SPEAKING BELGIANS ARE ALLOWED TO BUY A HOUSE IN VILVORDE IN FLANDERS.

The Belgian town of Vilvorde has taken the kingdom’s linguistic row to new extremes by insisting that only Dutch speakers be allowed to buy homes it has up for sale. Buyers have to prove they can speak Dutch, and not just show their “willingness” to learn the regional language, as is the case elsewhere in Flanders when renting publicly owned homes.
For an application to be taken into account, a prospective home owner would have to provide a copy of a school certificate showing that they had studied Dutch, or passed a language test.
The French-speaking Socialist party disagreed.

OUD EN AMERIKAAN: JOHN MCCAIN.

De Koude Oorlog eindigde negentien jaar geleden met de val van het IJzeren Gordijn in Berlijn. Maar zoals je wel vaker ziet bij Oude mensen en Amerikanen zonder enig historisch besef: voor Republikeins presidentskandidaat John McCain staat het Gordijn nog recht overeind. McCain is dan ook beide: Oud en Amerikaan.

McCain adviser re-writes history of McCain’s ‘impossible’ and ‘dumb’ plan to kick Russia out of the G8.

In October 2007, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) wrote about the G8 in Foreign Affairs, saying “it should include Brazil and India but exclude Russia.” Now, an anonymous “McCain adviser” tells Reuters that McCain’s October 2007 comment “doesn’t reflect where he is right now” and is just “a holdover from an earlier period.” But that “earlier period” apparently includes March 2008, since McCain made the same argument then in a major speech on foreign policy:

We should start by ensuring that the G-8, the group of eight highly industrialized states, becomes again a club of leading market democracies: it should include Brazil and India but exclude Russia.

After McCain argued for kicking Russia out of the G8 in March, foreign policy experts panned the idea, with one “senior U.S. official” calling it “impossible” and “just a dumb thing.”

Mensen stop met de vernieuwing van die badkamer, laat het plafond maar naar beneden donderen en zet de verf in de schuur. Vanaf volgend jaar kan heel Nederland voor niets, njetsk, neinta en narva worden verbouwd. Als er straks net zoveel Roemenen en Bulgaren naar Nederland optrekken als Polen - en Roemenie en Bulgarije zijn nog een stuk armer dan Polen dus waarom zouden ze niet - heeft Nederland de beschikking over 250.000 nieuwe Oost-Europeanen die het allemaal graag voor een broodje kroket willen doen.

DUTCH PARLIAMENT OPPOSE MORE WORKERS FROM NEW EUROPE.

A majority in the Dutch parliament is opposed to opening the country’s borders to workers from Romania and Bulgaria despite a serious labour shortage. Minister Piet-Hein Donner wants to admit Romanians and Bulgarians from 1 January 2009. Parliament, however, believe the current problems with Polish workers should be solved first.
The opposition conservative VVD says estimates of the number of Poles who would come to work in the Netherlands were way off the mark. Instead of the expected 15,000 as many as 120,000 Polish workers migrated to the Netherlands, leading to serious problems.
The VVD now says it ought to be at least another 3 years before Romanians and Bulgarians (the newest EU-members) are allowed to work in the country.

OLANDIAMO? DUTCH PAINTINGS IN OLD MEDICI PALACE IN FLORENCE.

Two top museums in Florence are exhibiting paintings and drawings from Dutch medieval artists. Rafael and Hans Memling; Jan van Eyck and Botticelli; Rogier van der Weyden and Ghirlandaio. A grand mix of paintings from Italian and Dutch top artists from the 14th and 15th centuries. They decorate the walls of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, and their colours leap out at you from the canvas. Also can be seen Lucas van Leiden, Anthonie van Dyck, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens and many others.
The exhibition proves that Italian masters copied images and themes from Dutch and Flemish paintings. The compositions, colours and symbols used by northern painters are also used by the Italians. Including the occasional Dutch stepped-gable. There are also exhibitions of modern art from the Netherlands, including photography, dance, theatre and music: Festival Olandiamo?
The old Medici palace is one of the largest and most renowned museums in the Italian town.

DUTCH PREPARE FOR MAYA APOCALYPSE WITH BOATS AND BUNKERS.

Thousands of Dutch are buying boats and rations and building bunkers to await an apocalypse predicted by the Maya of South America thousands of years ago. That will happen exactly December 21 in 2012, according to the calendar of the Maya people, marking the end of a 5,000-year era.
Belying their country’s rational and laid back image, thousands of Dutch people are convinced the date coincides with a world catastrophe. Petra Faile and her husband have bought a life raft and other survival equipment in preparation for Armageddon. “In another four years it will all be over,” she said. “You know maybe it’s really not that bad that the Netherlands will be destroyed. I don’t like it here any more.”
Mrs Faile said she was concerned that immigration was pushing the Netherlands, a low lying country protected by dikes and sea walls, beneath the waves.

Het blog Hoeiboei moest zich op het politiebureau verantwoorden over publicaties over vervelende Marokkanen. Ook schreeuwlelijk GeenStijl is op het bureau geweest om zich over 15 onbeschofte reacties van lezers in 2006 te verantwoorden. Volgens GeenStijl zijn er de afgelopen jaren op hun blog zo’n elf miljoen reacties geplaatst. Vijftien helemaal fout dus. Het wachten is op de sommatie van het AD, de Telegraaf en het NOS Journaal.
Maar hoe welkom zijn Nederlanders eigenlijk op het politiebureau.
Hier het verslag van filmproducer Wentholt die het geluk had in Amsterdam onze Marokkaanse medemens te mogen ontmoeten terwijl hij filmde voor een groot Amerikaans tv-station. Hij ging later zelf naar het bureau in Slotervaart om aangifte te doen van bedreiging, een bijna dagelijks fenomeen in bepaalde delen van Amsterdam. Voor alle duidelijkheid: niet de aangifte is een dagelijks fenomeen, Amsterdammers hebben geleerd dat die vrijwel zinloos is, maar de bedreiging.

Ik las de ‘ontbieding aan het bureau‘ die jij een paar dagen geleden ontving. Niet zolang geleden maakte ik iets mee bij een Amsterdams politiebureau dat een paar kilometer verderop ligt: het bureau August Allebeplein.Op 26 Maart, in de middag filmde ik voor een groot Amerikaans televisiestation op het August Allebeplein. Ik was bij de opnamen betrokken als lokale producer. Zodra de camera stond opgesteld werden we door rondhangende Marokkaanse jeugd op de meest afschuwelijke wijze uitgescholden en bedreigd. Bedreigingen zoals roepen dat je kop er af zal worden geslagen. Beledigingen als kanker journalist, hoer, je moeder dit en je zuster dat. We kwamen op dit pleintje terecht nadat we een interview met Marcouch hadden opgenomen. Ik vroeg zijn assistente (ja, met hoofddoekje) waar wij het best wat opnamen konden maken van het stadsdeel Slotervaart waarvan Marcouch de voorzitter is. Zij adviseerde dit pleintje.
We vertrokken van het plein want we voelden ons danig bedreigd.
We reden om de winkels van het pleintje heen en daar zag de Amerikaanse producer de moskee naast het politiebureau August Allebeplein. Hij suggereerde hier een paar opnamen te maken. Terwijl we de camera opstelden zagen we een grote groep typisch islamitische mannen, op hun grijze jassen stond ’straatcoach’. Zodra deze mannen ons zagen vertrokken ze allemaal naar binnen, het politiebureau in. We begonnen wat shots te maken.
Een geheel in trainingspak geklede Marokkaanse jongeman sprak me aan.
Op dreigende toon uitte hij alsmaar dreigender taal. Een kameraad arriveerde en die schreeuwde niets dan de meest ellendige beledigingen. Het spijt me dat ik het hier nog eens moet noemen: Je moeder is een kut, je zuster is een kut, kanker, en nog veel meer van dit soort uitingen. Hij schreeuwde zo hard als een mens maar schreeuwen kan en sprong daarbij op en neer, daarbij zijn eigen kruis vasthoudend en dit met een handgebaar als het ware in onze richting werpend. Kennelijk met de bedoeling zijn woorden kracht bij te zetten. De sfeer was zeer dreigend, ik meende dat er ieder moment klappen konden vallen. Omdat ik me verantwoordelijk voel voor de veiligheid van de medewerkers besloot ik dat we moesten gaan.

In alle peilingen ligt de Democratische presidentskandidaat Barack Obama nu flink voor op de Republikeinse presidentskandidaat John McCain. En de trend lijkt zich door te zetten. Maar de, door Big Oil en Big Business betaalde, smeercampagne van protofascistisch rechts is nog niet echt op gang gekomen, dus er kan nog veel veranderen tot november.

After looking at the map above, is it ANY wonder why the GOP is so worried about Barr’s Libertarian candidacy? It isn’t likely Barr is seriously hurting McCain, but rather that McCain is so vulnerable that a few votes here-n-there might eventually be enough to be the end of the GOP’s November hopes.

The AP has found out that during former House speaker Dennis Hastert’s last 11 months in office, he “managed to visit seven nations and run up a tab of just over $20,000 in taxpayer-funded overseas trips.” Hastert - who held no leadership position in Congress during this time - traveled to the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, China, Japan, and Colombia. In contrast, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) took taxpayer funded trips to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan; he “received $1,195 in per diem, but spent $827.16 and returned the rest to the U.S. treasury.”

Volgens de campagneleider van Republikeins presidentskandidaat John McCain zou een flinke terroristische aanslag in Amerika een groot voordeel zijn voor de campagne van John McCain. Die uitspraak laat zien dat campagneleider Charlie Black alles ziet in het licht van winst of verlies in de presidentiele campagne, zelfs de levens van zijn landgenoten. Volgens terrorisme expert Dick Clarke zegt Black daarmee tegen Osama Bin Laden en zijn volgelingen: “Ja, je kunt onze verkiezingen manipuleren. Kom en doe dat.”

Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) distanced himself from chief strategist Charlie Black’s comments that a terrorist attack would be a “big advantage” to the McCain campaign. “If he said that, and I do not know the context, I strenuously disagree,” McCain told reporters.
Later in the day on MSNBC, former counterterrorism adviser Richard Clarke told Keith Olbermann that if McCain was serious in his outrage, he should fire Black immediately. He also criticized Black for basically encouraging terrorists such as Osama bin Laden to manipulate American politics:

CLARKE: Well, Charlie Black knows a lot about politics but he doesn’t know much about terrorism. If he did, he would know that Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and all the al Qaeda leadership, watch U.S. politics very closely. We’ve even had cases where in interviews, bin Laden quoted opinion polls from European public opinion polls.
So, yes, they understand that they can manipulate politics as they tried to in the Spanish election with the attacks there. And to say, “Yes, you can manipulate our politics, come and do it,” is an invitation that the McCain campaign shouldn’t be anywhere near.

Unfortunately, conservatives are often putting out such invitations. Last week, former U.N. ambassador John Bolton said that if Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is elected president, the United States would “simply have more embassy bombings, more bombings of our warships like the Cole, more World Trade Center attacks.” Rep. Consumer confidence falls to 16-year low.

U.S. consumer confidence this month “to its lowest in 16 years as high inflation continued to sap confidence and pushed expectations for the future to a record low.” The index measured consumers’ moods at 50.4 in June, lower than Wall Street economists’ expectations and less than half of what it was last July. Amerika heeft lang eigenlijk geen echte oppositiepartij gehad, is de stelling van Glenn Greenwald. En ook nu ziet hij, en met hem veel progressieve en liberale Amerikanen, de Democratische Partij als veels te toegevend en te weinig principieel in de strijd tegen de Republikeinse Partij en haar desastreuze politiek.

Honderden ridders zijn op weg naar het kasteel van Filain in Frankrijk
waar ze te paard en in vol harnas de lans gaan kruisen met hun al even edele tegenstanders. De ridders zonder vrees of blaam worden vergezeld van tientallen herauten en schildknapen. Ze komen uit de hele wereld, alleen niet uit Azie. Daar bleken de lokale paarden en masse te bezwijken onder het gewicht van ridder, harnas en wapentuig.
Ons aller ’schilt ende betrouwen’ is kroonprins Willem Alexander, onze “Helt sonder vreesen die zijn edel bloet zal waeghen” op de slagvelden van Frankrijk. Alex bedenk hierbij: de laatste koning die stierf door een lans was koning Henry de II van Frankrijk in 1559.
Dus het wordt wel weer eens tijd.

KNIGHTS RIDING TO THE BATTLE AT THE CASTLE OF FILAIN IN FRANCE.

Fred Piraux has been grooming his horse Thorgal three hours a day, polishing replica 15th-century armor and taking lessons in medieval dancing.
Next month, the 38-year-old Belgian police instructor will level his lance at a fearsome opponent, Frenchman Tino Lombardi, in a bid for the top spot with the International Jousting League.

WSJ’s Max Colchester reports on how jousting, the blood sport of the Middle Ages, is staging a comeback. He speaks with jouster Fred Piraux, who is preparing for an upcoming tournament.

“It’s not about the prize you win. It’s about hearing your rivals’ wives weep,” says Mr. Piraux. A squire helps the chevalier squeeze into a metal breastplate. Mr. Piraux hoists himself onto his chocolate-brown steed and gallops through the fields on the outskirts of this industrial Belgian town.
The advent of firearms ended the medieval sport of jousting in the 17th century. But the Internet has resurrected it and, today, mounted men in full armor charge at each other for glory and global rank.
About 1,000 people world-wide take part in this sport, estimates the International Jousting Association, though only 200 have the equipment and expertise to joust competitively. The International Jousting League, a separate organization, has 47 jousters from San Diego to Paris who compete at castles and fields around the whole world.

TSVANGIRAI MAG HAPJE MEE-ETEN OP DE NEDERLANDSE AMBASSADE.

Nog even en na Jordanie (want ze weten daar van tempo maken) gaat ook Zimbabwe, het door Robert Mugabe hoogst persoonlijk verwoeste stukje Afrika, onze producten boycotten. Dat gaat een klap geven want ze hebben daar wat te besteden in Zimbabwe. Miljoenen om niet te zeggen miljarden. Zimbabwanen kunnen hun geluk niet op want ook gisteren steeg de koers van de Zimbabwaanse dollar weer fors. En wel van 7,5 miljard dollar naar 12 miljard dollar voor een (1) Amerikaanse dollar.
Bij zoveel voorspoed kan het niet anders, zo heeft Mugabe zelf vastgesteld, dat de koloniale mogendheden de schuld zijn van de lege winkels. In de supermarkt is maismeel niet meer te krijgen en het nationale voedsel is nu ook van de zwarte markt verdwenen. De honger is zo groot geworden dat oppositieleider Morgan Tsvangirai zich genoodzaakt voelde de Nederlandse ambassade in Harare in te vluchten. Volgens BuZa-minister Maxime Verhagen is Tsvangirai: “Van harte welkom en mag hij overal aanzitten en alles opeten.”
Dat tot woede van Mugabe die de oppositieleider juist een laatste maal had willen aanbieden.

As Americans suffer at the pump, energy industry basks in luxury.

Soaring oil and gas prices may be a fiscal drag for much of the nation, but in Houston, they are feeling an economic surge. “Few places have flourished like Houston, home to hundreds of oil exploration, engineering and oil service firms, including such giants as Baker Hughes and Halliburton.” The Chicago Tribune reports:
“Here in Houston, Maserati sales are up 86 percent so far this year, according to the TexAuto Facts Report.
Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent are expanding their luxury stores at the Galleria shopping mall. New construction permits in the city have jumped by almost 30 percent. The region added more than 100,000 jobs last year. And the mayor just proposed a dream budget for next year featuring more cops and lower property taxes.”
“We know that everybody is talking about a recession in the U.S., but we’re not experiencing that here,” said Tracye McDaniel, executive vice president of the Greater Houston Partnership, a business development group. “We exist in this bubble, if you will.”
