Ik heb een lekke band met mijn fiets maar ik moet naar het ziekenhuis in de stad want mijn moeder ligt op sterven, kan ik een pomp en een pleistertje van u lenen?

Aangekomen in Mae Sai, de noordelijkste plaats van Thailand aan de grens met Birma, heb ik mijn intrek genomen in The Nordern Guesthouse. Ik was de enige gast en kreeg de volle en warme aandacht van de eigenaar. Ik kan dit gasthuis zeer aanbevelen. Het is niet erg luxueus, het wekt eerder de indruk op een late namiddag met wat sloophout in elkaar te zijn getimmerd, maar het is heerlijk gelegen in het groen aan de grensrivier. Mijn kamer is simpel maar voldoet aan alle eisen van deze reiziger, te weten een schoon bed en een badkamertje. Geen mug kan er binnendringen in dit boudoir, maar wat geluidsisolatie betreft, voldoet het naar mijn inschatting niet geheel aan de eisen van de meest minimale bouwverordening. Ik kon de eigenaar in het kamertje naast mij horen woelen, maar dat was ook het enige nachtelijk geluid. Zoals bijna elke ochtend werd ik weer voor dag en dauw gewekt door een stelletje hanen.
In Thailand vertelden ze mij het navolgende sprookje:

Er was eens een tijd, dat er nog helemaal geen hanen waren in Siam en de mensen elke dag konden uitslapen. Zij hoefden nog niet zoals tegenwoordig vroeg op om rillend van de ochtendkou hun schamele straatwinkeltjes op te bouwen in afwachting van de eerste toeristen, maar konden rustig blijven liggen totdat de zon alles een beetje had opgewarmd. Op zekere dag verscheen er een groot schip voor de kust met vreemd riekende mensen en de kapitein heette Columbus. Hij werd natuurlijk uitgenodigd aan het hof van de koning en als relatiegeschenk gaf hij de koning twee grote vogels en een mandje grote eieren.

Surprise

Wij zijn deze week in Singapore op bezoek.
We verwachtten niet dat er hier aan Sinterklaas gedaan zou worden, en waren dus blij verrast ‘s ochtends iets in onze schoenen aan te treffen. Weliswaar geen chocoladeletter, maar een leuk pakje thee.
Jammer genoeg was het niet te zuipen.

President Obama made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan yesterday as he sought to smooth over a troubled relationship with President Hamid Karzai. By 2014, when the U.S hopes to end their visit to Afghanistan, the war will have dragged on for thirteen years. Sadly bad weather forced the cancellation of a planned meeting between President Obama and Hamid Karzai.

The White House said rough weather forced the president to abruptly drop plans to meet Karzai in Kabul. Wind, dust and cloud cover made it unsafe for the president to fly from the huge military complex to the presidential palace.
The White House then said they would speak by secure videoconference - but later that, too, was dropped. Instead, the two leaders were expected to speak by phone.

The priorities of the Republican Party are made clear from the beginning they take over the House of Representatives. Billions of taxpayers money went to big oil companies thanks to tax breaks given by the Bush/Cheney adminitration. Billions that could have been spent to free the American society from their dangerous addiction to fossil fuels.
Now one of the first things the Republicans will do in the House is disbanding the chamber’s Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, calling it a waste of money. Yippie, Big Oil is back in control of the U.S. House.

US President Barack Obama’s Republican foes in the House of Representatives said Wednesday they were disbanding the chamber’s committee on battling global warming, calling it a waste of money.
Democrats immediately assailed what they branded the “very disappointing” decision to dismantle the Select Committee on Global Warming, which did not have the power to approve legislation.
“We have pledged to save taxpayers’ money by reducing waste and duplication in Congress,” said a spokesman for Republican House speaker-designate John Boehner, Michael Steel.

Een vriend van JdeW was geoloog aan de Universiteit Groningen, een veilige baan. Een stuk veiliger dan de baan die hij daarvoor had. Daarin moest hij voor een groot bedrijf beslissen waar wel of niet naar olie geboord kon worden.
Nadat het een keer fout ging, kreeg hij de standaard waarschuwing: ‘Bij de volgende droge put vlieg je er uit’. Vanaf dat moment was zijn standaard antwoord als, na uitvoerig geologisch onderzoek, de knoop moest worden doorgehakt:
“Boren?”
“Niet boren!”
Hij heeft het nog twee jaar volgehouden.

Royal Dutch Shell: the well is dry, no further comments

Bloomberg - Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Europe’s biggest oil company, drilled a dry well at the Dalsnuten prospect in the Norwegian Sea, delivering a further blow to its Gro discovery. Shell drilled a wildcat well at Dalsnuten, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the Gro gas discovery, with the objective of finding gas in the Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said in an e-mailed statement today. The agency reported in August that an appraisal well drilled at Gro indicated the find could be at the lower end of the 10 billion to 100 billion cubic meters of gas estimates.
Shell spokesman David Williams confirmed that the well was dry and declined to comment further.

Some conservatives thinks that the patting down of travellers in American airports has nothing to do with Islamic extremism but everything with homosexual extremism promoting the gay agenda. Did you know the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is ’secretly getting pleasure from your submission’.

A widely distributed e-mail written by Loudoun County Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio about TSA, claims the pat downs are part of a “Homosexual Agenda.” And he criticizes TSA’s non-discrimination hiring policy.
“It’s the federal employee’s version of the Gay Bill of Special Rights…
That means the next TSA official that gives you an ‘enhanced pat down’ could be a practicing homosexual secretly getting pleasure from your submission,” Delgaudio wrote.
…Part of his official role on the Board of Supervisors includes representing the county in the Dulles Area Transportation Association.

De Leidse geleerde Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje schreef eind 19de eeuw het boek ‘Mekka‘ dat insloeg als een bom. In 2007, 120 jaar later, verscheen een Nederlandse vertaling. De faam van Snouck Hurgronje (geleerde, ontdekkingsreiziger, schrijver, spion) is grotendeels gebaseerd op zijn beschrijving van het alledaagse leven in de heilige stad van Islam, Mekka. Om tot Mekka toegelaten te worden werd hij moslim. Hij trouwde een Ethiopische prinses. Frankrijk beschuldigde hem van spionnage.

Most Americans don’t mind full body scans and being patted down because they don’t like to be killed by terrorists.

According to Gallup poll relatively few frequent U.S. air travelers are upset about the new procedures or inclined to cut back on flying as a result. A large majority (71%) of travelers say any potential loss of personal privacy from full-body scans and pat-downs is worth it as a means of preventing acts of terrorism.

Zowel koningin Beatrix als Apiedapie wezen onlangs op de gevaren van internet. Koningin Beatrix deed het tijdens een toespraak waarin ze zei dat de virtuele wereld mensen van elkaar verwijdert. Apiedapie zei het treffend op drasties: Elkaar ongestraft, ongecorrigeerd en onzichtbaar afmaken.
Wijnand Boon wil laten zien dat ze beide geen gelijk hebben. Dat sociale media als internet, twitter en facebook mensen niets afneemt maar ze juist dichter bij elkaar brengt. Om dat te bewijzen loopt hij van Leiden naar Compostela, naar Rome, naar Jeruzalem. Voor hulp als voedsel, slaapplaats, zakgeld etc. is hij geheel afhankelijk van de nieuwe media.
Voorlopige conclusie: hij leeft nog!

Dutch pilgrim sets out to prove social media unites

Dutch Queen Beatrix claimed that virtual encounters distanced people from one another. Wijnand Boon wants to prove her wrong. While he agrees that some social values have eroded, he was bothered by Beatrix’ notion that Internet-based relationships contributed to a decreasing sense of community and responsibility in society.
So he began a journey from his hometown of Leiden - walking 9,700 km to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Rome and, ultimately, Jerusalem. Armed with only his iPhone and a guitar, the 33-year-old Dutchman “tweets” his way along, giving updates about his journey via Twitter, Facebook and his blog and depending on the altruism of others to provide him with lodging, food, donations, and moral support.
