Er is warempel één Amerikaanse die geïnteresseerd is in Suriname. Haar naam is Janina Rubinowitz en ze is minstens zestig maal op bezoek geweest in ons voormalig wingewest. Janina heeft een collectie Maroon Art uit Suriname die in diverse museums in de VS te zien is geweest.

This exhibition examines the slave trade and seeks to increase understanding of this maritime epic and its legacies in the modern world including the cultural contributions of Africans that are an integral part of America today. Art objects from the Museum for African Art are also shown as part of the exhibition, as well as art from Maroon villages in Suriname from the Janina Rubinowitz Collection of Maroon Arts.

Many people died between 1986 and the time when the civil war was over. I would be deeply interested in hearing what the rationale that stopped the overthrow of the military government at that time. Thank you so much.

Waarom hebben de Duitsers het verdrag over de aansluiting van de Betuwelijn met Oberhausen gebroken? In 2010 zou dat al klaar zijn maar Duitsland is zelfs nu nog niet met de aanleg begonnen. Daarover gaat dit commentaar in de Berliner Umschau. Reken voorlopig maar niet op een aansluiting van de dure Betuwelijn met de rest van Europa. Er is geen geld omdat volgens Karl Weiss iedere euro gestoken wordt in een krankzinnig project van de christendemocraten: CDU-Wahnsinnsprojekt, Stuttgart21. Zo iets zou Nederland nooit doen. Toch?

Kommentare, Berliner Umschau - Um die Finanzierung für das CDU-Wahnsinnsprojekt ‚Stuttgart21‘ aufbringen zu können, haben die Bahn und der Bund bewusst einen internationalen Vertrag mit den Niederlanden gebrochen, den sogenannten Betuwe-Vertrag, der einen Ausbau der Bahnstrecke vom Hafen Rotterdam nach Oberhausen bis 2010 vorsah, was den Anschluss des Rotterdamer Hafens an die Rheintalstrecke bedeutet hätte.

Maleisië is een heerlijk land, bijna altijd mooi weer, prachtige natuur, democratische bestuursvorm, geen schrijnende armoede, weinig criminaliteit, maar het is overduidelijk wel een moslimland. Nu heb je daar als toerist niet al te veel last van, de meisjes met hun tuttige hoofddoekjes lonken en flirten net zo fanatiek als hun leeftijdgenoten in niet-moslimlanden, een paar keer per dag klinkt vanuit de minaretten wat gejammer, maar dat duurt meestal maar een paar minuten en als de imam toevallig een mooie stem heeft, sta ik zelfs met plezier te luisteren. Echter, als je tegen het eind van de middag of ’s-avonds aan tafel zin krijgt in een koud biertje dan kom je vaak van een koude kermis thuis.

Het is alleen verkrijgbaar in de grotere hotels en daar kom ik niet en verder in Chinese restaurants of winkels en daar kom ik dus regelmatig. Ik ben zeker geen alcoholist, maar ik zal bij een bordje nasi niet snel een glaasje jus bestellen. De Chinezen kunnen weliswaar ook rijst bakken, maar ik wil ook wel eens echt Maleisisch of Indiaas eten en dan ben je veroordeeld tot vruchtensap of water. (more…)

Science Daily: At the current pace of research and development, global oil will run out 90 years before replacement technologies are ready, says a new University of California, Davis, study based on stock market expectations. The forecast was published online on Nov. 8 in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. It is based on the theory that long-term investors are good predictors of whether and when new energy technologies will become commonplace.
“Our results suggest it will take a long time before renewable replacement fuels can be self-sustaining, at least from a market perspective,” said study author Debbie Niemeier, a UC Davis professor of civil and environmental engineering.

The Hindu - The Dutch East India Company started the city of Cape Town. In 1652 they sent Jan Van Riebeeck to solve the problem of scurvy suffered by ship crew. He was to set up a station - Fort de Goode Hoop - to provide fresh vegetables to be loaded on to ships before they set off to the Dutch East Indies. Chennai, The Times of India - It was the Dutch that were indirectly responsible for the birth of Chennai some 370 years ago. At the time, they had built a fortified settlement in Pulicat while the British, seeking to establish a hold on the east coast, had none. It was then the British decided that they too should have a fortified settlement of their own, and a village called Madraspatnam was chosen to build a fort, which grew into present-day Chennai. A man wrote a letter to a small hotel: “I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Can I keep him in my room with me at night?”
An immediate reply came from the hotel owner:
“I’ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here, too.”

Al als kind had Marcel Wanders de wens om het servies van de KLM te mogen ontwerpen. Die wens is nu eindelijk in vervulling gegaan. Het nieuwe bestek bestaat uit porselein, glaswerk, bestek, linnen en het plateau. Het komt pas per 27 maart 2011 in gebruik.

“Met de introductie van het nieuwe servies, gaat een lang gekoesterde wens in vervulling. Als frequent flyer van KLM, heb ik mij zeer goed kunnen verplaatsen in de opdracht en heb ik een metamorfose van het bestaande servies kunnen realiseren. Het nieuwe ontwerp is dankzij alle ergonomische, technische, economische en logistieke eisen uitgegroeid tot een servies op het niveau van een toprestaurant”, aldus Marcel Wanders.
