Almost half a million square kilometers is set aside in Alaska as threatened bear habitat. That is more than ten times the total area of the Netherlands (41.526 square km’s). A step in the right direction:
The US government designated “critical habitat” for polar bears who live on Alaska’s disappearing sea ice, a move that could impact new oil and gas drilling projects in the Arctic.
The Fish and Wildlife Service set aside 187,000 square miles (484,000 square kilometers) off Alaska as the threatened bears’ habitat, which means any project that could impact the animals’ way of life must undergo careful review.
Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks Tom Strickland puts it in context:
“Nevertheless, the greatest threat to the polar bear is the melting of its sea ice habitat caused by human-induced climate change. We will continue to work toward comprehensive strategies for the long-term survival of this iconic species.”
Op zoek naar het monster van Ramirezi doorkruisten we het Natuur Historisch Museum van Rotterdam, dat zich bekend weet van het penisbotje van de walvis en van de Domino Mus, die onwetend van de ravage die hij/zij/het zou ontketenen werd doodgeschoten en in dat museum is opgezet. Door conservators, die hun werk serieus nemen.
Net voor ons betraden twee Rotterdamse vrouwen het museum. Breed geschouderd, ook breed in de heupen, zelfgehaakte witte truien, hard pratend met elkaar, zulke vrouwen zie je eigenlijk alleen in die stad.
Noodgedwongen namen we een andere route door het gebouw, kwamen de verzameling van de leraar biologie tegen, die vijftig jaar lang gefascineerd is gebleven door de walvis en daar zijn leerlingen van het Erasmiaans vermoedelijk in heeft meegesleept, interessante fossielen uit Winterswijk, dat ooit een kust aan de zee had, de Domino mus dus. Het winkelend publiek bevolkte vanmiddag de straten en de markt van Den Bosch en ik heb zelden beter geklede en welvarender mensen aangetroffen dan vandaag in deze mooie historische binnenstad. Van de recessie is in Den Bosch helemaal niets te merken. Ik liep daar niet om een nieuw kostuum te gaan kopen, maar om in de Sint Jan een concert bij te wonen van het Collegium Musicum Amsterdam, dat haar 75-jarig bestaan viert met een uitvoering van muziek uit de Renaissance en vooral omdat mijn koorvriendinnetje Lucia daar ook aan mee zou doen.
Enkele tientallen mensen waren neergestreken op de klapstoeltjes in het priesterkoor en waren ademloos getuige van dit prachtige concert.
Naast het koor stond de pontificale zetel van de bisschop van den Bosch, die niet aanwezig was en het vermoedelijk te druk had met het niet-beantwoorden van brieven van incest-slachtoffers. (more…)

De Leidse geleerde Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje schreef eind 19de eeuw het boek ‘Mekka‘ dat insloeg als een bom. In 2007, 120 jaar later, verscheen een Nederlandse vertaling. De faam van Snouck Hurgronje (geleerde, ontdekkingsreiziger, schrijver, spion) is grotendeels gebaseerd op zijn beschrijving van het alledaagse leven in de heilige stad van Islam, Mekka. Om tot Mekka toegelaten te worden werd hij moslim. Hij trouwde een Ethiopische prinses. Frankrijk beschuldigde hem van spionnage.

As he couldn’t enter the jurisdictions of Makkah, Hurgronje first landed in the port city of Jeddah and immediately began to socialize within the city’s elite circles. In order to gain access into the Holy City, as well as the trust of citizens and government officials, he publicly converted to Islam and became known as Abd Al-Ghaffar. In Jan. 21 1885, he finally set forth on his much-anticipated journey.

Most Americans don’t mind full body scans and being patted down because they don’t like to be killed by terrorists.
According to Gallup poll relatively few frequent U.S. air travelers are upset about the new procedures or inclined to cut back on flying as a result. A large majority (71%) of travelers say any potential loss of personal privacy from full-body scans and pat-downs is worth it as a means of preventing acts of terrorism.

This is what Democratic senator Chuck Schumer of New York said yesterday in a New York Times article today on the possibility that newly elected Tea Party politicians want to cut military spending and foreign aid — including aid to Israel. Great to see that, with the Great Recession still going strong, at least some of America’s representatives in Congress have their priorities straight:
“One of the first things Congressman Cantor can do is to make sure that his colleagues vote for aid to Israel,” said Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, who also met with Mr. Netanyahu.
The FBI had been tracking Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a Somali-born U.S. citizen, since a year. That started when Mohamed contacted a suspected terrorist in Pakistan by e-mail in August 2009.
The FBI helped Mohumed plan his ‘attack’, though they encouraged him to consider whether he really wanted to be responsible for the murder of innocents and gave him several opportunities to back down. He didn’t. Muhamed was arrested 18 minutes before the annual lighting of the Christmas tree in Portland.
The Oregonian:- The FBI thwarted an attempted terrorist bombing in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square before the city’s annual tree-lighting Friday night, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oregon.

Zowel koningin Beatrix als Apiedapie wezen onlangs op de gevaren van internet. Koningin Beatrix deed het tijdens een toespraak waarin ze zei dat de virtuele wereld mensen van elkaar verwijdert. Apiedapie zei het treffend op drasties: Elkaar ongestraft, ongecorrigeerd en onzichtbaar afmaken.
Wijnand Boon wil laten zien dat ze beide geen gelijk hebben. Dat sociale media als internet, twitter en facebook mensen niets afneemt maar ze juist dichter bij elkaar brengt. Om dat te bewijzen loopt hij van Leiden naar Compostela, naar Rome, naar Jeruzalem. Voor hulp als voedsel, slaapplaats, zakgeld etc. is hij geheel afhankelijk van de nieuwe media.
Voorlopige conclusie: hij leeft nog!
Dutch Queen Beatrix claimed that virtual encounters distanced people from one another. Wijnand Boon wants to prove her wrong. While he agrees that some social values have eroded, he was bothered by Beatrix’ notion that Internet-based relationships contributed to a decreasing sense of community and responsibility in society.
So he began a journey from his hometown of Leiden - walking 9,700 km to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Rome and, ultimately, Jerusalem. Armed with only his iPhone and a guitar, the 33-year-old Dutchman “tweets” his way along, giving updates about his journey via Twitter, Facebook and his blog and depending on the altruism of others to provide him with lodging, food, donations, and moral support.

Colombia Reports - Marloes Nijmeijer, sister of Dutch FARC guerrilla Tanja Nijmeijer, has arrived in Colombia to look for her relative in the jungle, reports W Radio.
Marloes Nijmeijer said she wants to find her sister, who has been a FARC guerrilla for several years. She reportedly said that she is not proud of Tanja’s actions because the FARC is “an illegal group which kills innocent people and doesn’t want peace.”

China is the surprise worldleader in clean energy efforts. China is already the world’s largest manufacturer of wind turbines and solar panels. And right now China is preparing to roll out electric cars, lithium ion batteries and cellulosic ethanol. This is where the future of energy is. The world has a finite resource in oil, just like we had a finite resource in whale oil. In the past we have made the transition. China understands that and China’s investment in clean energy is about double that of the United States.
“The Chinese leadership have made a strategic decision that they missed out on the last two industrial revolutions and they don’t want to miss out on the third one,” said Erwin Jackson, director of the Climate Institute, of China’s “surprising” dominance.
“They are now commanding the largest market share of clean energy investment at a global level as a result,” Jackson told AFP.
China’s investment in clean energy topped 35 billion US dollars in 2009 compared with 11 billion in Britain and 18 billion in the United States, and Jackson said it was set to increase tenfold over the next decade.
“The race toward a clean-energy future is underway, and those nations that lead will reap enormous economic benefits,” CAP’s Kate Gordon noted in a report on clean energy this year, adding that “[b]y 2020, clean energy will be one of the world’s biggest industries, totaling as much as $2.3 trillion” and that China “has made a serious commitment to building that revolution with low-carbon, low-waste technologies and infrastructure.”
