Voor de drankorgels onder u. Topdarter Raymond van Barneveld heeft iets bijzonders gedaan. Hij heeft achtereenvolgens negen pijltjes in zijn favoriete gaatje gegooid. Op het wereldkampioenschap darts van de profbond PDC gooide hij een ‘negendarter’, de snelst mogelijke manier om een ‘leg’ uit te gooien. Bonus: 20.000 euro.
Kijk en luister hier. Die stem: one hundred and eighty.

Hieronder staat een discussie tussen de Nederlandse klimaatonderzoeker Bart Verheggen en de global warming skeptic Thomas Fuller. Verheggen blijkt een aardige man die met werkelijk iedereen de discussie aangaat. Het begint met de opmerking van Fuller dat skeptici aan tafel willen zitten met wetenschappers. Er moet naar ze geluisterd worden. Ze willen serieus genomen worden. Respect man, respect!
Daarop is maar één reactie mogelijk en die geeft Verheggen dan ook. Het is heel eenvoudig voor meneer Fuller et al om aan tafel te zitten met wetenschappers.
Verzamel gegevens die uw stellingen moeten bewijzen op controleerbare wijze (gewoon tellen werkt vaak goed), publiceer die gegevens op controleerbare wijze (JdeW suggereert een grafiekje of tabelletje) in een begrijpelijke taal (zou engels wat zijn?) en u hebt een plaats aan de tafel. Wel eigen servet meenemen svp.
Het is een misverstand om te denken dat kritische onderzoekers niet welkom zijn in de wetenschap. Het tegendeel is waar. De hele wetenschap is gebaseerd op mensen die anders denken dan hun voorgangers. Die worden wel bestreden, maar als ze gelijk hebben, dan krijgen ze dat uiteindelijk ook. Oftewel Fuller stop met lullen en ga wat doen.
Hieronder eerst ‘de lezing’ van Bart Verheggen op zijn blog over de discussie en daaronder wat er zich echt heeft afgespeeld, volgens Thomas Fuller. De echte werkelijke waarheid dus.

Thomas Fuller’s advice for “warmists”

Tom Fuller had a post on how science minded folk (“warmists” he calls them) should talk with “sceptics”. Well meant, but coming from the perspective of the “skeptics” having a lot of useful things to say about the science, which is only rarely the case if you ask me. Below are his main points with my replies:
Thomas Fuller: Without ‘reaching across the aisle’ you will not have adequate support to implement your policy preferences.
Bart Verheggen: Coming from a scientist point of view, my prime concern is to advance the public understanding of the issues, and to fight efforts at increasing misunderstanding. From a policy advocacy position, you’re surely right. Though it’s an illusion that you could possibly get 100% of people to agree with your position. Some people are just dug in too deep.
Fuller: What most skeptics want more than anything else is a seat at the table–to be listened to and taken seriously.
Verheggen: Play by the scientific rules, and you have a seat. Publish, come to meetings, use real arguments.

Nu de Republikeinen niet meer aan de macht zijn in de Verenigde Staten valt de ene na de andere fraudeur door de mand. Na Bernie Madoff is nu de beurt aan Allen Stanford. Ook al een Ponzi-fraude (piramidespel) waarbij de fraudeur niets anders doet dan steeds nieuwe beleggers te lokken met hoge uitkeringen van eerder ingelegd geld. Min tien procent voor zichzelf natuurlijk.
Hun handelwijze werd mogelijk gemaakt door machtige Republikeinen als Pete Sessions. Dat hoeft niemand te verbazen. Zoveel verschil is er niet tussen de een en de ander. Ze blinken beide uit in machtig rijk worden door andere (minder bedeelde) mensen een rad voor de ogen te draaien.

Just hours after federal agents charged banker Allen Stanford with fleecing investors of $7 billion, the disgraced financier received a message from one of Congress’ most powerful members, Pete Sessions.
“I love you and believe in you,” said the e-mail sent on Feb. 17. “If you want my ear/voice — e-mail,” it said, signed “Pete.”
The message from the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee represents one of the many ties between members of Congress and the indicted banker that have caught the attention of federal agents.

According to the Miami Herald’s report, Stanford used his ties to Congress to establish himself as a respectable businessman and also to avoid the unwanted gaze of federal regulators.

These departures flew a collective 69,415,786,000 miles. That means there has been one terrorist incident per 11,569,297,667 mles flown. This distance is equivalent to 1,459,664 trips around the diameter of the Earth, 24,218 round trips to the Moon, or two round trips to Neptune…
There were a total of 674 passengers, not counting crew or the terrorists themselves, on the flights on which these incidents occurred. By contrast, there have been 7,015,630,000 passenger enplanements over the past decade. Therefore, the odds of being on given departure which is the subject of a terrorist incident have been 1 in 10,408,947 over the past decade. By contrast, the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are about 1 in 500,000.

Mijn vriend is bij een sneeuwballengevecht vorige week lelijk gevallen. Hersenschudding, constateerde de dokter die verder zei dat hij thuis moest blijven en absoluut niets mocht doen. “Nee, ook niet sneeuw ruimen… nee, ook niet de hond uitlaten.”
Ik lag de volgende ochtend nog in bed toen ik hoorde dat de achterdeur werd geopend. De hond werd uitgelaten en niet alleen de hond want even later hoorde ik dat de sneeuw van het pad werd geschoven.
‘Die eigenwijze lul’, dacht ik en rende, slechts gekleed in een T-shirt, naar beneden en opende de deur. “Herman, je komt nu binnen”, riep ik.
Hermans buurman, zo bleek later, keek me verbaasd aan. Toen lachtte hij.
“Ik ben dan wel Herman niet maar ik kom graag binnen.”

Jezebel, Mediaite: Dutch hero Jasper Schuringa getting paid to talk

Mlive.com - Two popular blogs claim to have evidence that Jasper Schuringa, the Netherlands man widely credited with thwarting a would-be terrorist aboard Northwest Flight 253, has been paid by national news outlets for his story.
Mediaite, which blogs about, well, the media, says CNN paid Schuringa for the blurry cell-phone image of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab being arrested aboard the inbound flight to Detroit. And Jezebel, which caters to women, has dug up how much he made on both a CNN interview and another deal with The New York Post.

Mediaite, Dec. 26: Here’s what it sounds like happened: CNN tells Mediaite they paid a “licensing fee” for the exclusive cell phone image, which they have been using throughout the day. TVNewser reports, “Insiders tell us other networks are vying to buy the image for upwards of $10,000.” CNN clarifies the network did not pay for the actual interview during CNN Newsroom. However, there’s a reason Schuringa has not appeared any further on CNN or any other network – we hear he has asked for additional payment for any future interviews.

Piggybacking off the Mediaite post, Jezebel obtained e-mails about some of Schuringa’s transactions, and broke down how much he allegedly made from the deals:

Rep. Peter Hoekstra stelt president Obama verantwoordelijk voor de mislukte terreuraanslag door een Nigeriaan in een vliegtuig dat van Nigeria via het Nederlandse Schiphol op weg was naar de VS. Blijkbaar behoort het volgens de Republikeinen tegenwoordig tot de taken van de Amerikaanse president hoogst persoonlijk de vliegtuigpassagiers te fouilleren.
Nou zo kan JdeW het ook. Peter Hoekstra - alias Pete Hoekstra - is mede verantwoordelijk voor de mislukte aanslag want hij is een geboren Nederlander en dat land maakte de aanslag mogelijk. In een eerste reactie wijst Hoekstra de aantijgingen van JdeW geheel van de hand.
Hoekstra: Natuurlijk ben ik niet verantwoordelijk voor de aanslag. Ik ben als Nederlander slechts mede verantwoordelijk voor het verijdelen er van.

Sarah Palin must be running out of excuses for her gaffes. As ThinkProgress noted earlier this week, the former governor was forced to address her “death panel” lie in the wake of PolitiFact’s designation of her claim as “Lie of the Year.” In an attempt to spin the lie, Palin is now calling the “death panel” claim a “metaphor“:

Though Nancy Pelosi and friends have tried to call “death panels” the “lie of the year,” this type of rationing – what the CBO calls “reduc[ed] access to care” and “diminish[ed] quality of care” – is precisely what I meant when I used that metaphor.

Dit is hem dus. De man van wie iedereen wil weten wie het is. Jasper Schuringa, een filmmaker uit Amsterdam. Dus, mag ik het zo zeggen: één van ons. Dat gevoel van trots, hebben jullie dat nou ook? Wel, jullie zijn niet de enige. Geert Wilders vraagt zich verontwaardigd af hoe het kan dat de man nog geen lintje heeft?

jasper schuringa - nog maar even niet ontvrienden

De 32-jarige Nederlander Jasper Schuringa heeft de Nigeriaanse terrorist Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab (23) overmeesterd in het vliegtuig van Amsterdam naar Detroit en heeft zo een terreuraanslag voorkomen.
Schuringa zei dat hij geen moment twijfelde dat het om een aanslag ging toen hij aan de andere kant van de cabine een explosie hoorde. “Iemand begon te schreeuwen: vuur, vuur!” Hij dook over passagiers bovenop de terrorist en wist hem te overmeesteren, vertelt hij aan de Amerikaanse nieuwszender CNN.
Die bleek zijn broek open te hebben en een brandend voorwerp tussen zijn benen te houden. “Ik pakte dat ding van hem af, probeerde het vuur met mijn handen te doven en gooide het weg.” Schuringa trok de Nigeriaan van zijn plek af en sleurde hem mee naar de voorkant van het vliegtuig. De Nigeriaan leek als verdoofd. “Hij staarde in het niets.”
Schuringa liet weten dat hij vervolgens de man van zijn kleren heeft ontdaan om er zeker van te zijn dat hij niet nog meer explosieven bij zich droeg. Een cabinemedewerker hielp hem de Nigeriaan handboeien om te doen. Andere passagiers zouden vervolgens hebben geapplaudisseerd toen hij terugliep naar zijn eigen stoel. “Mijn handen zijn behoorlijk verbrand, maar verder gaat het goed met me.” Na de landing werd hij als een held behandeld, vertelt Lydia Faber, compagnon bij het mediabedrijf van de Amsterdammer aan de Telegraaf.

I just saw CNN’s interview with Jasper Schuringa, who’s the hero of Northwest Flight 235. Jasper Schuringa said that when he saw the fire coming from alleged terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, he just “leaped over some seats” and went to put out the flame.
