Republican’s Bizarro World: ‘Every Tax Cut In History Created More Revenue’
In the budget released today, the Obama administration announced that it would end the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans, as well as shut off loopholes that effectively eviscerate corporate tax revenues, all in an effort to fuel a robust domestic agenda and start lowering the deficit.
Predictably, the right wing is up in arms over the small tax increase for the richest businesses and families. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) complained to a friendly crowd at CNBC this morning that Obama’s tax increases would harm the economy, and insisted the best way to raise revenue is to cut taxes:
HUTCHISON: I think we get revenue the way we’ve done it in the past that has been so successful in the past and that is tax cuts…Every major tax cut we’ve had in history has created more revenue.

Mijn man en ik brachten onze zesjarige dochter naar het ziekenhuis. Ze had koorts en bleef maar overgeven. De dokter die haar onderzocht, vroeg: “waar heb je het meeste last van?”

Hij stuurde haar ook verschillende sms’jes, maar de vrouw antwoordde niet. “Het is grotendeels mijn fout dat we ruzie hebben, ik wil gewoon een kans om het uit te leggen,” aldus een ongelukkige Chen.
Lord Ahmed, de man die dreigde 10.000 moslims de straat op te sturen als Geert Wilders Engeland zou binnenkomen, is veroordeeld tot drie maanden gevangenisstraf wegens roekeloos rijgedrag. Hij reed eind vorig jaar op een auto die (na een eerder ongeluk) stilstond op de snelweg waardoor de chauffeur stierf. Belangrijkste reden voor de veroordeling was dat bewezen is dat Lord Ahmed zat te sms-en met een bevriende journalist vlak voordat zijn Jaguar op de stilstaande Audi van de 28-jarige Martyn Gombar knalde.

Birds have empty nest issues too.
And with the climate changing, some nests in the Netherlands are becoming more likely to stay empty, researchers say.
Back in the 1950s, little birds called Great Tits (Parus major, koolmees) at four Dutch study sites were more likely than not to start a second family during the breeding season as soon as the first chicks left the nest, says Arild Husby of the University of Edinburgh. Some 72 percent of the Dutch accept the evolution theory.
Just 19 percent reject it and 9 percent have no views. The theory is most broadly accepted among Green (GroenLinks) at 91 percent, and conservative (VVD) voters at 83 percent. Among the voters for CDA, the biggest government party, the figure is 57 percent and among ChristenUnie supporters, 25 percent. Of the total sample, 31 percent believe a God exists who exercises influence on what happens on Earth. Compare this to the US. A new Gallup Poll shows that only 39% of Americans say they “believe in the theory of evolution,” while a quarter say they do not believe in the theory, and another 36% don’t have an opinion either way. These attitudes are strongly related to education and, to an even greater degree, religiosity.
Only about half of the Americans do know what Darwin’s theory is anywhay.
Still is seems to be getting better.
A CBS-poll in 2004 showed that Americans do not believe that humans evolved, and the vast majority says that even if they evolved, God guided the process. Just 13 percent say that God was not involved. But most would not substitute the teaching of creationism for the teaching of evolution in public schools.
Now that Bush has officially joined the lecture circuit, it seems he’s seeking to make good on his hope to earn “ridiculous” money. The Dallas Morning News reports that he’s charging $150,000 per speech and demanding a private jet to take him to the speech venue:
President George W. Bush may have left office with a historically bad 22% approval rating, but he’s still eager to impart his wisdom — for $150,000 a speech.
The former president will charge that hefty fee per pep talk — plus first-class or private jet transport for four — when he hits the lecture circuit next month with stopovers in Canada, the U.S. and other spots around the globe, sources told The News.
He does give the locals a discount, charging Dallas gigs a scant $100,000.
Bobby Jindal is de gedoodverfde presidentskandidaat van de Republikeinen over vier jaar. Dus mocht de gouverneur van Louisiana in een landelijke tv-toespraak reageren op president Obana’s inspirerende speech gisteren tot het Congress. Jindall, die overheidssteun voor werklozen in zijn staat afwees om te laten zien hoe conservatief hij wel niet is, wordt volop gesteund door niemand minder dan Rush Limbaugh. Helaas, zelfs op Fox News vonden ze zijn speech maar ‘amateurish’ en ‘childish’.

Fox Verdict On Jindal’s Speech: Childish, Amateurish, Not Exactly Terrific
Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R) response to President Obama’s speech tonight received a universal thumbs down from the Fox News panelists, who are traditionally conservatives’ most gentle critics:
BRIT HUME: “The speech read a lot better than it sounded. This was not Bobby Jindal’s greatest oratorical moment.” NINA EASTON: “The delivery was not exactly terrific.” CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: “Jindal didn’t have a chance. He follows Obama, who in making speeches, is in a league of his own. He’s in a Reagan-esque league. … [Jindal] tried the best he could.” JUAN WILLIAMS: “It came off as amateurish, and even the tempo in which he spoke was sing-songy. He was telling stories that seemed very simplistic and almost childish.”

The response across the political spectrum to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R-LA) speech last night has been overwhelmingly negative. Even the most enthusiastic conservative talkers had harsh words for Jindal’s speech, calling it “cheesy,” “insane,” and “not his greatest oratorical moment.”
But Jindal still maintains one key supporter — Rush Limbaugh. On his radio show this afternoon, Limbaugh leaped to Jindal’s defense. “I love Bobby Jindal, and that did not change after last night,” he said.

In an interview with the website Real Clear Politics, Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) was asked about the “view that perhaps Republicans are rooting for President Obama to fail.” This question was a clear reference to Rush Limbaugh, who infamously said, “I hope Obama fails.” Sanford responded in unequivocal terms:
SANFORD: I don’t want him to fail. Anybody who wants him to fail is an idiot, because it means we’re all in trouble.
In the past, Limbaugh has attacked other Republicans who have expressed hope for President Obama to succeed, declaring that they are “drinking the Kool-Aid… they’re afraid of being called racists.”
Jon Stewart goes to town on all the Republican Governors
who are huffing and puffing about the stimulus bill and how much they hate it, yet have no problem taking the money being offered.
Stewart: But of course the Republican Governors have their integrity!Jindal: I think we just have a fundamental disagreement here. I don’t think the best way to do that is for the government to tax and borrow more money.
Stewart: Yea. That’s Bobby Jindal. Louisiana Governor,rising star in the Republican Party, and a leading anti-stimulus voice. His state has been offered $3.8 billion in federal aid. But Jindal has said, “No.” He’s only agreed to take… a little over 3.7 billion.

It’s true that there’s something simultaneously ironic, perverse and just about the aid package: Israel uses American weapons, massive amounts of American money and America’s diplomatic cover to devastate Gazan society, and then the U.S. bears the cost of repairing the damage wreaked by Israel and re-building Gaza. Nonetheless, that seems to be the least we can do (as J Street said in praising Obama’s aid package, “it is only a first step”)…

Babette uit Amsterdam is op bezoek in de States en komt daar een man op straat tegen met een microfoon. En als een echte Hollandse meid zegt ze gewoon waar het op staat. Bovendien wordt het toch nooit in Nederland uitgezonden, denkt ze hardop. Maar wel in de Jay Leno Show. So what. Babette is gewoon leuk!
De interviewer is Steve, the Judgmental Bastard. Hij bekijkt mensen en meent dan precies te weten hoe ze in elkaar zitten. Eerst gespot op GeenStijl. Update:Babette is overigens artiest, ze kan echt zingen, zie deze youtube video. Een beetje reclame zal ze toch prima vinden, neem ik aan.
Apie en zijn vertelgrage taxichauffeur reden Marine Drive op. De boulevard die in de vorm van een halve maan Mumbai van de zee scheidt. Ach, dacht Apie, hoeveel mooie momenten heb ik hier al niet meegemaakt? Een paar blokken verderop wist hij het huisje van Mahatma Gandhi, nu een ingetogen museum met zwartwit foto’s en spreuken. „The world has enough for our needs but not enough for our greed.“ Nog altijd actueel helaas. De prachtige koepel bovenop het InterContinental gleed voorbij. Apie dacht aan dure whisky. Dan de zinderende live-muziektent „Not Just Jazz by the Bay“. Apie dacht aan goedkoop bier. Maar dit alles deed toch vooral warme gevoelens van geweldloosheid, schoonheid en tederheid in zijn drukke koppie indalen.
Nieuwsgierig keek Apie naar de passanten. Stond het leed hen nog op het gezicht geschreven? Zouden ze schrikken als hij ineens „BOEM!“ zou roepen? „Smakeloos, sir!“ draaide de chauffeur zich ineens om. Nee he! Apie had weer eens hardop gedacht. Hij rekende af en stond binnen een halve minuut buiten. Een tikkie zwetend van de schaamte. Want Apie had het helemaal niet zo erg bedoeld. Dat had de chauffeur kunnen weten als hij Apie wat langer had gekend. Maar ze zouden elkaar nooit meer zien. Toevallig stond Apie precies voor het Hilton hotel,
een van de plaatsen waar de terroristen hadden toegeslagen. Zijn nekkie knakte bijna van het omhoogkijken. Er was helemaal niks te zien. Geen geblakerde muren, geen gesprongen ramen, geen uit het lood hangende deuren. Het leven ging hier gewoon door. Er was niets bijzonders te zien. Wat een teleurstelling moest dit zijn voor ramptoeristen, dacht Apie met een frons.
Te voet kwam hij sneller vooruit en al gauw liep hij het centrum in. Toeterende auto’s, krakende handkarren, smerige moordende bussen. Hij raakte zoals altijd verrukt van de betoverende mengeling van wolkenkrabbers, spiegelpaleizen, en victoriaanse villa’s, met net om de hoek geurende specerijenstraatjes waar de safraan goed en goedkoop is, en waar de omaatjes met waardigheid op straat zitten. Apie liep verder en zag ineens in de pui van een café … kogelgaten! Echte. Met een politieman ervoor. Nu ging het dus toch beginnen …

When passing the monumental dome on the InterContinental hotel, Apie thought of expensive whisky. Then there was the live music club „Not Just Jazz by the Bay”. Apie thought of cheap beer. He was just a few blocks away from the little house of the late Mahatma Gandhi, now a modest museum with black and white pictures and framed sayings. „The world has enough for our needs but not enough for our greed”. Unfortunately true as never before. All of this made warm feelings of non-violence, beauty and tenderness fill his busy little head.

Om de werkzaamheden aan het fietspad niet te hinderen, staan er hekken. Een man, type wit t-shirt, spijkerbroek en zonnebril, wringt zich er op zijn scooter toch doorheen. Een van de werklui roept: “Hé, Holleeder! O nee, je broer!”

1. Drasties wordt gesponsord door moveon.org?
Nietes! MoveOn is een organisatie (3,2 miljoen leden) die werd opgezet vanwege grote frustatie over de Republikeinse impeachment procedure van Bill Clinton alsof Washington niets beters te doen had.
2. Is er geen ruimte voor andere opinies op drasties?
Welles! Mits met enige intelligentie gebracht. Zie hoe vaak hier de opinies van O’Reilly, Beck en Hannity naar voren zijn gebracht. En als allerpamstliefste op dit stuk wil reageren, wordt dat zonder mankeren geplaatst op het DrastiesForum.
3. Glenn Beck is een libertarian.
Nietes! Al draagt een aap een gouden ring, het is en blijft een lelijk ding. Bij Beck betekent libertarian niets anders dan dat hij de vrijheid wil hebben zijn achterlijke nonsens de ether in te slingeren. Een vrijheid die hij de familie van 9/11 slachtoffers wilde ontnemen, want die moesten hun ‘koppen dicht’ houden met hun geklaag over president Bush. Een vrijheid die hij ook Al Gore het liefste zou willen ontnemen. Volgens Beck gebruikt Al Gore in zijn Global Warming-campagne dezelfde tactiek als Hitler in zijn campagne tegen de Joden. Hij vergeleek verder de Obama-politiek al met het Nazisme en het Stalinisme.
Beck is voor de doodstraf. Hij is voor de oorlog tegen alle drugs. Hij is voor alle VS-oorlogen, ook al vormden die landen (Vietnam, Irak) geen enkele bedreiging voor de VS. Hij zou graag Michael Moore vermoorden. Hij toonde een advertentie op zijn blog waarin werd gesuggereerd illegale immigraten te gebruiken als brandstof. Hij noemde mensen die zelf willen beslissen over de beeindiging van hun eigen leven, misdadigers.
3. Democraten zijn geweldig; Republikeinen staan voor alles wat slecht is in de wereld?
Nietes! Dat hangt er van af wat ze zeggen en vooral wat ze doen. Overigens fijn dat er iemand is, die blij is met de staat waarin Amerika verkeert na twaalf (Reagan, H.W. Bush) plus acht (G.W. Bush) jaar Republikeinse presidenten. Vergelijk zonodig de cijfers van W. met de acht jaar tussendoor van Clinton. Vergeet ook niet de Republikeinse meerderheid in het Congress van twaalf jaar (met pas de laatste twee jaar een kleine Democratische meerderheid).
4. CNN is altijd goed.
Nietes! Staat nergens op drasties. Zou ook raar zijn, aangezien Glenn Beck net van CNN is overgestapt op Fox News.
5. FoxNews is slecht.
Nietes. Drasties en Fox News hebben zelfs veel gemeen. Zo doet Fox News net als drasties iedere dag veel aan het weer. Opvallend is daarbij wel hoe vaak het bij Fox News regent in Venezuela, Mexico, Frankrijk en Nederland.
6. Niemand buiten de VS kan het iets schelen dat Wilders de Senaat bezoekt.
Nietes! Het kan Nederlanders iets schelen.
Kortom, we besluiten met deze opmerking van Jon Stewart over Glenn Beck:
“Finally, someone who says what people who aren’t thinking are thinking.”

Ja, het bier dat sinds 1615 in Groenlo wordt gebrouwen . Grolsch, met dat leuke dopje. Grolsch heeft een reclamespot gemaakt waarbij het lied van Bob Dylan: “I want you’ is gebruikt. Ook toestemming om voor het eerst muziek van Dylan te gebruiken, kregen deze maand: the Co-operative, Cadillac, Victoria’s Secret, and Pepsi.
A month ago, Bob Dylan made news by allowing one of hissongs to be used
in a commercial for one of the few times in his career; he gave permission to The Co-operative to use his 1963 classic “Blowin’ in the Wind.” That apparently opened the floodgates, as weeks later Dylan’s “Forever Young” appeared in a Pepsi commercial during the Super Bowl and today we learned that Dylan has given permission for another of his songs to be used in advertising for the 3rd time already this year. “I Want You,” from 1966’s Blonde on Blonde, appears in an ad for the Dutch beer company Grolsch.
In the YouTube video of the commercial (via The Daily Swarm), a man rides the train rails with two Grolsch beers while Dylan blows a harmonica solo. Finally, the man gives one of the beers to an older man and takes off with his daughter while Dylan sings the chorus, “I want you. I want you so bad.”
Bob Dylan can now add Grolsch to his list of approved-advertisers, which includes Cadillac, Victoria’s Secret, and Pepsi.
The unfortunate truth Americans can’t deal with is that the U.S. has the highest level of illegal drug use in the world despite tough anti-drug laws. That shows a 2008 survey by The World Health Organization (WHO).
