1641: Massachusetts legalizes slavery.
1662: Hereditary slavery begins with a Virginia law that decrees children of black mothers and white fathers “shall be bond or free according to the condition of the mother.”
Enslaved Africans are codified as property when Virginia law allows owners to bequeath slaves. The law also allows owners to “kill and destroy” runaways. The enslaved are not recognized as people in the eyes of the law: They cannot legally marry, own property, vote, serve as witnesses or make contracts.

Peretz and the American political consensus on Gaza

Opinions about the Israeli-Palestinian dispute are so entrenched that any single outbreak of violence is automatically evaluated through a pre-existing lens, shaped by one’s typically immovable beliefs about which side bears most of the blame for the conflict generally or “who started it.” Still, any minimally decent human being — even those who view the world through the most blindingly pro-Israeli lens possible, the ones who justify anything and everything Israel does, and who discuss these events with a bottomless emphasis on the primitive (though dangerous) rockets lobbed by Hamas into Southern Israel but without even mentioning the ongoing four-decades brutal occupation or the recent, grotesquely inhumane blockade of Gaza — would find the slaughter of scores of innocent Palestinians to be a horrible and deeply lamentable event.
But not The New Republic’s Marty Peretz. Here is his uniquely despicable view of the events of the last couple of days:

Wedding: Roeland Roelofs and Dana Tidikis

HEESWIJK, Netherlands — Dana Tidikis of Utrecht, Netherlands, daughter of Frank and Judith Tidikis of Stuart, was married to Roeland Roelofs of Nistlerode, Netherlands, on Oct. 11 at Abbey van Berne in Heeswijk, with Abbot Cortviendt officiating.
Roelofs is the son of Frans and Iedje Roelofs of Nistlerode.
Isabelle de Champlain of Montreal was maid of honor.
Bas Roelofs of Johannesburg, South Africa, was best man, with Adam Tidikis and Gijs Ronnes as attendants.
The bride graduated from Countryside High School, Clearwater in 1993, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and from IESE University of Navarra in Barcelona, Spain. She is employed by Triodos Investment Management Co. in Zeis, Netherlands, as an investment officer.
The groom graduated from Gymnasium Benrod, Heeswijk in 1993 and from the University of Utrecht in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. He received his master’s degree in international business from IESE University of Navarra in 2005. He is a brand manager for Novartis Pharmaceutical Co. in Arnheim, Netherlands.

Amsterdam, 26 december - Op Tweede Kerstdag werd tijdens de avondvoorstelling van Margreet Dolman’s en Dominee Gremdaat’s Kerstshow de reportage van onze drastiesreporter, Apiedapie over het swaffelen genoemd. De site www.drasties.com werd aan het tot de nok gevulde theater voorgehouden als referentiekader en bron voor dit onthullend verhaal. De Kerstshow is een jaarlijks terugkerend fenomeen, en de serie voorstellingen was ook dit jaar snel geheel uitverkocht. Dominee Gremdaat presenteerde zijn opbeurende preek voor het Nieuwe Jaar. Margreet Dolman zong liedjes, danste dansjes, en sprak met het publiek en Nederland. Tot de meest opvallende belevenissen behoorde een echte dominee wiens email adres gehackt en misbruikt was, en een echte vrouw der vrouwen die vorige week in de sauna een blinde man was tegengekomen. Margreet deelde desgevraagd mede niet wakker te liggen van het woord ’swaffelen’ dat volgens haar door middel van een internetsamenzwering was verkozen. Wij hopen nu dat de bezoekers van Margreet drasties correct zullen spellen en heten hen welkom.

Apiedapie

Er is een extra voorstelling ingelast van Margreet Dolman en Dominee Gremdaat, ’s middags 31 december in het betty asfalt complex. In het voorprogramma een optreden van Apiedapie die zal demonstreren hoe hij de Eiffeltoren uit het lood swaffelde. Drasties waarschuwt Dominee Gremdaad alvast dat de Amsterdamse politie extra mankracht heeft ingezet om de Westertoren tegen swaffelen te beschermen.

De leider in ballingschap van Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, heeft zaterdag opgeroepen tot een derde opstand (intifada) tegen Israël. In een gesprek met de Arabische nieuwszender al-Jazeera maande hij het Palestijnse volk tot een “militaire intifada tegen de zionistische vijand”. Het verzet gaat door met zelfmoordaanslagen, aldus Meshaal, die in de Syrische hoofdstad Damascus leeft.

Even kort samengevat. Deze blanke boer kocht land vijf jaar na de onafhankelijkheid van Zimbabwe. Dus terwijl Robert Mugabe president was. Dit jaar werd dat land ‘legaal’ van hem afgepakt en gegeven aan de bankier Elias Masakwa, een vriendje van Mugabe. Toen hij er nog boerde, graasden er 700 koeien, nu nog twee. En hun vee sterft.

HOW THE AWFUL COLONIALIST’S MADE ZIMBABWEANS GO HUNGRY

Three weeks ago, unable to prevent the animals from dying, Martha Theron grabbed her husband’s gun, ran into a field and began shooting their dying animals, before breaking down and weeping uncontrollably. Mrs Theron and her husband, Deon, are among the surviving handful of white farmers. Despite everything, Mr Theron still clings to some belief in a future as a farmer.
About 4,000 white farmers have been forced out of their homes since the onset of the land seizures in 2000. This year Theron was evicted “legally” after losing a case in the Harare Magistrates’ Court in March. He was accused of trespassing on land he had bought in 1984, four years after Zimbabwe’s independence.
He was allowed no witnesses in the two-month-long trial and was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended on the condition that he vacated Zanka farm located 58 miles south of Harare, within 30 days. Four days before the deadline, the Therons packed up the contents of their very ordinary home and herded their 700 cattle to a patch of his mother’s land about five miles way.
“I went to have a look at the farm two weeks ago for the first time since I left,” said Mr Theron, 54. “It was taken by Elias Musakwa from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. He told the court he needed it urgently as he was importing 250 cattle from South Africa. There are two beef cattle there, 20 sheep and 35 goats, and he doesn’t live there.”

In 1963 veroorzaakte de zogeheten Milgram-test voor veel opschudding. Psycholoog Stanley Milgram wilde weten of en wanneer mensen in opstand komen tegen autoriteiten als die hen vragen immorele dingen te doen.
Vrijwilligers werd gezegd dat de test ging over of mensen beter leren door pijn. De proefpersonen moesten een andere vrijwilliger - gespeeld door een acteur - stroomstoten geven als die een fout antwoord gaf. Het voltage werd verhoogd na elk fout antwoord.
Ook wanneer het ’slachtoffer’ - die uiteraard geen stroomstoten kreeg - begon te gillen van de pijn, bleef acht van de tien vrijwilligers het voltage verhogen.
Amerikaanse onderzoekers van de universiteit van Santa Clara voerden de test opnieuw uit. En opnieuw blijkt een ruime meerderheid van de proefpersonen bereid te martelen, als dat wordt opgedragen. Van de 41 vrijwilligers bleven 29 doorgaan met het toebrengen van stroomstoten - zelfs nadat een derde persoon de kamer binnenkwam, en de marteling aan de kaak begon te stellen. Hetgeen bewijst dat bijna iedereen onder druk in staat is tot ‘verontrustende dingen’.

Sectarian bloodshed has dropped sharply in Iraq from the high levels of 2006-07, but attacks against U.S. and government forces continue, claiming the lives of Iraqi civilians in step, a new study has found. Between at least 8,300 and 9,000 civilians were killed in Iraq in 2008, bringing the total of civilian deaths since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 to at least 98,400. Twenty-five civilians died a day in 2008, comparable to the violence during 2003-2004.

Geen beter zicht op de deerniswekkende staat van de inhoudsloze Amerikaanse journalistiek dan het lijstje van het toonaangevende rechtse internetkrant Politico met de belangrijkste primeurs van 2008. Daarop wereldschokkende zaken als Sarah Palin gaat winkelen, Barack Obama zegt ‘bitter’ en Hillary campaignmanager zegt ‘f*ck you’. Maar zoals Glenn Greenwald uitlegt, dat komt natuurlijk omdat Amerika het afgelopen jaar zo weinig echte problemen heeft gekend, het door de hele wereld op handen wordt gedragen en er sprake is van heldere politiek van competente mensen met als gevolg grote voorspoed.

b. Je valt en blijft dan precies in het midden van de aarde hangen.
c. Je veert op en neer tussen de ene kant en de andere kant van de aarde.
d. Geef uw eigen antwoord.

Frits Abrahams bestelde onlangs acht boeken bij Alibris, de grote onlineboekhandel in de VS. Hij had ze, zoals vereist, vóór verzending betaald, maar twee van de acht boeken kwamen niet aan. Kon Abrahams de boekhandel aansprakelijk stellen voor het niet ontvangen van deze boeken? Bewijs het maar eens; er kon toch ook een fout gemaakt zijn bij de postbestelling in Nederland?

“Ik had er weinig fiducie in toen ik via internet contact zocht met Alibris. Maar het reageerde al de volgende dag op mijn klacht. „I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t get your items”, schreef Saju Bhaskaran van de Alibris Client Services. „I know how frustrating that is! At this point, your items have probably been lost in the postal system, so I’ll refund you in full.”
Volledige vergoeding dus. Twee dagen later kreeg ik al de bevestiging van de bedragen die op mijn creditcard zouden worden teruggestort. Sorry voor het ongemak, en ze hoopten dat ik bereid was de boeken opnieuw te bestellen.

Wat me zo aangenaam trof, was het uitblijven van ook maar enig argwanend vertoon. Geen lastige vragen, geen waarschuwingen dat dit niet te vaak moest gebeuren. Ik kreeg mijn geld terug en daarmee was de kous af.
Blijkbaar denken ze bij Alibris, wij gaan van het goede in onze klanten uit – er zullen wel rotzakken bij zitten, maar laat dat er nou eens één op de honderd zijn, waar maken we ons dan druk om? Die rotzak is ons geen tijdrovende procedures waard, we vergoeden hem ‘de schade’ en we zijn verder van allerlei gezeur af.”

Een mooi verhaal over patriottisme, het onderwerp van eeuwige discussie in de Verenigde Staten. Wie houdt er meer van zijn land: de persoon die alles accepteert wat er in naam van zijn land gebeurt of diegene die ook met een afstandelijke en kritische blik kan kijken naar zijn geboorteplek, zoals een Nederlander dat bijvoorbeeld doet? Republikeinen verwijten de Democraten altijd dat ze niet zoveel van Amerika - ‘het grootste en beste land ooit op aarde’ - houden als zij. En daar hebben ze gelijk in, zegt LATimes columnist Joel Stein. Dat betekent dat iemand als Sean Hannity van FoxNews, inderdaad meer van Amerika houdt dan Barack Obama. Vandaar natuurlijk dat Hannity nu al de ‘conservatieve ondergrondse’ aan het opzetten is, die het verzet gaat organiseren tegen de totale destructie van Amerika die onder Obama gaat plaatsvinden.

REPUBLICANS ARE BLINDED BY LOVE

Lefties just don’t have the same feeling about America as the hard right does.
I don’t love America. That’s what conservatives are always telling liberals like me. Their love, they insist, is truer, deeper and more complete. Then liberals, like all people who are accused of not loving something, stammer, get defensive and try to have sex with America even though America will then accuse us of wanting it for its body and not its soul. When America gets like that, there’s no winning.
But I’ve come to believe conservatives are right. They do love America more. Sure, we liberals claim that our love is deeper because we seek to improve the United States by pointing out its flaws. But calling your wife fat isn’t love. True love is the blind belief that your child is the smartest, cutest, most charming person in the world, one you would gladly die for. I’m more in “like” with my country.
Fox News’ Sean Hannity loves this country so much, he did an entire episode of “Hannity’s America” titled “The Greatest Nation on Earth.” In that one hour he said, several times, “the U.S. is the greatest, best country God has ever given man on the face of the Earth.” One of the surest signs of love is it makes you talk stupid.

Uit de eerste resultaten van het grootste onderzoek naar gsm-straling ooit, blijkt dat mensen die frequent bellen met een gsm tot vijftig procent meer kans hebben op kanker. Het gaat om een onderzoek van Interphone waarbij wetenschappers gegevens van 6.400 tumoren van mensen uit dertien landen vergelijken.
Het gaat nog maar om de eerste conclusies van het onderzoek, die naar voor kwamen bij het Israëlische deel van de studie. Een analyse bij mensen die al meer dan tien jaar bellen met een gsm in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Denemarken, Noorwegen, Zweden en Finland toont een verhoogde kans op kanker van 40 procent. Er was nog geen duidelijk verhoogd risico waar te nemen bij mensen die nog geen tien jaar met een gsm bellen, meldt het Amerikaanse tijdschrift Popular Science.
Hoe de straling van mobiele telefoons kanker veroorzaakt, is wel nog niet duidelijk. De straling is namelijk te zwak om cellen direct te beschadigen, maar sommige wetenschappers geloven dat de straling wel een indirect effect heeft.

The enticement worked. The officer, who described the encounter, returned four days later to an enthusiastic reception. The grinning chief offered up a bonanza of information about Taliban movements and supply routes — followed by a request for more pills.

Speaking in Grant Park November 4th, Barack Obama summed up our situation in 2008 as “two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.”
We would add one more seismic event to that list—the skinny guy with the big ears who dazzled a nation and gave us hope. I’m speaking, of course, of Michael Phelps.
Oh, and then there was “That one.” The chosen one, the anti-Christ, the terrorist paller-arounder, the Muslim, the mega-celebrity, the too-black, not-black-enough, Madrasah-schooled foreign, exotic, elitist, occasional-cigarette-bumming, untested, un-American, half Kenyan, half British, half Kansan, three-pointer-dunking, crazy-preacher-huggin’ socialist Marxist commie hunk ‘o beefcake. He made some news, too.
And then there was Sarah. Sarah Sarah Sarah. When she made her entrance on the public stage, horny men across the country fantasized about making sweet love to that pistol packin’, moose-huntin’, ass-kickin’, Russia-watchin’, winkin’ atcha hockey mom who really doesn’t know very much about very much. By the time she made her exit, they were having nightmares about getting their wieners stuffed into a turkey-decapitating machine. I hope we haven’t seen the last of her.
Oh, and after Wall Street lost all your money, the government gave Wall Street a bunch more of your money. And not a single mob with torches and pitchforks appeared anywhere. Crazy.

BOSTON: Philips Electronics, the Dutch industrial giant, is convinced of two things: that the proportion of the elderly in the population is growing and it is getting greener.
Those two trends are guiding the company as it continues to transform itself, reorganizing its divisions and jettisoning product lines while picking up others.
Long known as a manufacturer of Magnavox televisions, Norelco shavers, and Philips incandescent light bulbs, Philips wants to get away from home electronics and sell hospital scanning and monitoring equipment and high-tech light bulbs made with light-emitting diodes.
“We were a technology-driven company,” said Gerard Kleisterlee, the chief executive of Philips. “But that is only one element. Now we are focusing on care cycles. ‘Health and well-being’ is a common theme that everyone works on.”
