Met alle gekanker op de Verenigde Staten van Amerika moet ook gezegd worden dat dit land als eerste en enige land in de geschiedenis van de wereld vocht om slavernij af te schaffen. Slavernij die bestond vrijwel sinds het begin van de mensheid. En dat dit land als eerste overwegend blank land in de geschiedenis van de wereld grote kans maakt om een (half)zwarte man tot president te kiezen.
Amerika: een wonderbaarlijk, fascinerend, vaak ergerlijk en vaker inspirerend land.

Obama becomes first African-American nominee for President.

The AP reports that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has officially become the presidential nominee of the Democratic party. “I have been asked to inform you that Senator Obama accepts the nomination and will deliver his acceptance speech tomorrow night at the fourth night of the convention to be held at Invesco field,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced today. Obama is the first African-American nominee of a major political party and will accept the nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech.

Zoals dat gaat in Amerika sleepte Monsanto de boeren voor de rechter om hun te verbieden hun melk te labelen wat die is: Posilacvrij. Verbieden! Een storm van protest stak op, de consumenten pikten het simpelweg niet. Monsanto ziet dat nu in en geeft het op.

This is such an exceptional tale that it has to be told over and over again. Maarten was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2001. During the worst times doctors saw him having only weeks, maybe just days, left to live. Yet he overcame this horrible disease and, after two years completely away from the sport, he began training again. In Beijing he took home the gold medal in the 10k open water event.

protesters gathering at government house as darkness falls

Most Thais hoped that the political conflict would cool down after Thaksin fled
to Britain this month to escape corruption cases. But anti-Thaksin street-protesters, the People’s Alliance for Democracy, insisted that they will not give up until the resignation of the pro-Thaksin government, led by Samak Sundaravej. Yesterday tens of thousands of protestors stormed government buildings and a state tv-station in Bangkok, in what the group’s leader, Sondhi Limthongkul, billed as “judgment day”.
And today protesters are still surrounding Government House despite Samak’s warning that his patience is exhausted. The police seeks a court order today to remove the protesters. Sondhi, with his usual bravado, said they would have to kill him first.
What happens next is hard to predict. But a dead Sondhi is not to be expected.

WONDER BAMIE UIT NOORD KOREA GAAT EEN EINDE MAKEN AAN DE HONGER.

De oplossing van het voedselprobleem is nabij. En het komt uit Noord Korea waar ze enige ervaring met honger hebben. Na langdurig onderzoek van tientallen wetenschappers is in Pyongyang een nieuw soort mie ontwikkeld. De mie onderdrukt gevoelens van honger. Honger Bamie dus! De mie is gemaakt van graan en sojabonen en door het eten er van voelen mensen zich langer ‘gevuld’. Quod erat demonstrandum: minder honger! In Noord Korea sterven jaarlijks mensen van de honger, vooral kleine kinderen. Vorige maand nog waarschuwde de VN dat Noord Korea grote voedseltekorten te wachten staan. Vandaar dan ook dat de wetenschappers zich met dit dringende probleem hebben bezig gehouden. Nu dat is opgelost, kan de aandacht weer worden gericht op de verbetering van het kernarsenaal en de lange afstandsraketten.
Maar, naar verluidt zijn ook enkele wetenschappers na hun succes met Honger-Bamie door Kim Yong-Il op een nieuw voedselproject gezet, de ontwikkeling van: Eutha-Nassi.

Dat vragen steeds meer mensen in Europa en elders in de wereld zich af. What the F*ck is er mis met een land waarin de Republikein John MacCain in de peilingen gelijk opgaat met de Democraat Barack Obama. Een Republikein die iedereen kent als oorlogszuchtig, die er geen problemen mee heeft atoombommen tegen Iran te gebruiken, geen benul heeft van economie en op 71-jarige leeftijd is vergeten hoeveel huizen hij heeft.
Een vreemd, vreemd land dat Amerika. Na een oorlog gebaseerd op leugens, die Amerika zwakker en Amerika’s vijanden (Iran, Al Qaeda) sterker heeft gemaakt en midden in een gevaarlijke economische crisis zou je verwachten dat een Republikein die de huidige regering in vrijwel alles heeft gesteund, geen schijn van kans zou maken.
Maar nee hoor, de helft van de kiezers denkt dat ‘meer van hetzelfde’ McCain het antwoord is op de snel aftakelende status en macht van Amerika. En dat is beangstigend. Want iedereen kent McCain en iedereen zou kunnen weten dat hij nooit de capaciteiten heeft getoond om president te worden. Hij is niet buitengewoon intelligent (hij kwam onderaan in zijn klas op de militaire academie), hij is onbesuisd (hij crashte met drie vliegtuigen) en is een lichtgeraakt, opgewonden standje. Kortom: volgens Iain McWhirter wordt president McCain een vlammenwerper in een munitiefabriek. Zeker als hij aan de hand blijft lopen van protofascistische neoconservatieven als (’scary, batshit insane’) Robert Kagan.

The Glasgow Herald’s veteran political correspondent Iain McWhirter wonders wtf is wrong with America, that John McCain is actually level with Obama in the polls. A lot of Europeans are wondering the same thing.

It seems incredible, but as the Democrats gather in Denver to anoint Barack Obama, America could be on course to re-elect a Republican as their President. Not just any Republican either, but a belligerent 71-year-old who can’t remember how many houses he owns, would happily nuke Iran and whose answer to global warming is to drill for oil in environmentally sensitive areas off the coast of America which don’t even have much oil. But according to the polls, John McCain is drawing level with Barack Obama, and even pulling ahead.

Really, America is a strange, strange country. After a disastrous and illegal war, in which 4000 American soldiers have died, in the middle of an economic crisis largely caused by the investment houses that finance the Republican party, you would have thought it almost inconceivable that the Republicans could be re-elected. Could any political brand be more toxic? Has any party in history deserved to be thrown out at an election more than the Republicans in 2008?

Yet enough American voters believe that John McCain might have the answers for him to become a serious contender. Which is scary. McCain is not an unknown quantity - he is a highly excitable politician with a notoriously short temper, who would bring his impetuous and confrontational style into American foreign policy. With the world entering a global economic slump, and old enmities raging in Europe, John McCain as President would be like a flamethrower in a fireworks factory.

It is scary - and Obama has to take a fair chunk of the blame. He’s seemed flat since the exhausting primary race and although his campaign actually has a decent set of detailed policies, he’s been awful at articulating them. Good on the inspirational rhetoric, crap on getting down in the weeds and it’s left him looking like, as the right likes to put it, an “empty suit”.

AT&T thanks the Blue Dog Democrats with a lavish party

Last night in Denver, at the Mile High Station — next to Invesco Stadium, where Barack Obama will address a crowd of 30,000 people on Thursday night — AT&T threw a lavish, private party for Blue Dog House Democrats, virtually all of whom led the way in immunizing AT&T and other telecoms from the consequences for their illegal participation in the Bush administration’s spying program. Matt Stoller has the listings for the party here.
Armed with press credentials issued by the DNC, I went — along with others — in order to cover the event, interview the attendees, and videotape the festivities. There was a wall of private security, and after asking where the press entrance was, we were told that the press was barred from the event.

BELGIAN MORROCCAN TERRORISM SUSPECT’S THIRTY YEARS OLD MURKY TRAIL.

Abdelkader Belliraj, held in Morocco, is said to personify the confluence of terrorism and crime — spurred by both ideology and money. But he was also a paid informant for Belgium.
The Moroccan-born Belgian has quite a resume: accused terrorist kingpin, assassin, gangster, double agent — and hotelier. He visited from Belgium now and then to oversee the hotel, a three-star joint with a sidewalk cafe where men sip tea and watch a parade of whining scooters, dusty taxis, sunburned tourists and veiled Berber women.
Moroccan police allege that the salmon-colored Hotel Fashion, on a downtown corner near a Haagen-Dazs shop and the train station, was a den of outlaws. In February, they arrested the burly, moon-faced Belliraj and three dozen suspected members of a network he is accused of arming for a terrorist campaign.
The 50-year-old’s intrigues over the last quarter of a century chart a singular history of Muslim radicalism, from a meeting with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1981 to a meal with Osama bin Laden just 10 days before the Sept. 11 attacks.

BRITS GEZIN SCHREEUWT DAGELIJKS 34 MINUTEN OM LIEFDE.

Een op de vijf Britten houdt net zoveel van hun huisdier als van hun kinderen.

Wie de Britten kent weet dat het klassensysteem daar nog in volle glorie regeert. Er zijn beleefde Britten, hoffelijke zelfs, zoals je ze in Nederland zelden tegenkomt, en er zijn de zuiperds en schreeuwerds. Helaas zijn de laatsten in de meerderheid. Uit een enquete onder duizend volwassenenen en 500 jongeren, blijkt dat het gemiddelde Britse gezin elke dag 34 minuten bezig is met naar elkaar schreeuwen. Bij meer dan de helft van de ondervraagde gezinnen houdt het gekrijs zelfs een uur aan. Al dat geruzie komt overigens niet per se voort uit haat en nijd. Van de ondervraagde jongeren zei 69% namelijk het gezin als het belangrijkste in hun leven te zien. En maar liefst 98% gaf toe dat ze van ouders houden. Bijna de helft van de jongens verklaarde bovendien later een vrouw te willen trouwen die op hun moeder lijkt. Ook bij de ouders waren er opvallende antwoorden. Zo gaf 13% toe dat ze een favoriet kind hebben. Opvallend was ook dat een op de vijf Britten zei ze net zo veel van hun huisdier te houden als van hun kinderen. De vraag wie er meer hield van hun huisdier dan hun kinderen werd wijselijk niet gesteld.

De keus van Barack Obama voor Joe Biden -34 jaar in de senaat - als zijn kandidaat voor het vice-presidentschap wordt verwelkomd door het politieke establishment in Washington. Ze kennen hem en de verwachting is dat het wel losloopt met al die aangekondigde veranderingen in de Verenigde Staten nu Obama een ervaren rot als Joe Biden aan zijn zijde heeft. Want verandering daar zit bijna niemand in Washington op te wachten.
Waarom de gevestigde media ook blij zijn met Biden is omdat deze 65-jarige senator ten koste van alles de ‘oude’ media probeert te beschermen. Hij wilde vijf jaar gevangenistraf voor mensen die muziek en films kopieren zonder er voor te betalen. Hij wil alleen sofware toestaan die is goedgekeurd door de overheid, en waarin diezelfde overheid via een achterdeurtje mee kan kijken. En oh ja, belasting op het internet, dat staat ook op zijn programma.

Joe Biden and the political establishment’s overriding goal

Writing in a New York Times blog yesterday, Clinton pollster Mark Penn hails the selection of Joe Biden as “a smart and successful choice” and says this:

From Al Gore on, the role of the vice president seems to have fundamentally changed. It used to be where the winner parked the loser or some other figure that he wanted to neutralize. Now, with the centralization of government power in the White House, the vice president has become essentially a Cabinet head. Indeed, the last two vice presidents have had real portfolios and responsibilities, second only to the president.

That we live in a country characterized by “the centralization of government power in the White House” — exactly what the Constitution was designed to prevent — is now so self-evident that it’s not even debated or contested any longer. A virtually omnipotent President is just an assumed fact of American political life, and the reason that there is such a fixation on the personality and “character” traits of the presidential candidates is because Our President is now, in essence, our Emperor, empowered unilaterally to do everything from attacking other countries to acting outside of and above the law. As Penn’s analysis illustrates, our political establishment isn’t bothered by that at all, but instead, just tacitly accepts it as the natural and desired state of things.

Today’s result, from Aug. 20-22 interviewing, represents the last Gallup Poll Daily
tracking update on the presidential race based on interviewing conducted entirely before Obama’s selection of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate was announced early this morning.
The full impact of that decision on voters will not be reflected in Gallup’s continuous three-day rolling average until Tuesday, however it will start to enter the data in Sunday’s report.
